(1986) Attendance at daily practice training in histopathology laboratory at the Veterinary Pathology Institute, University of Bologna, to learning criteria for histopathological evaluation of tissue lesions from several mammalian and fish diseases. (1983-1990) CURRENT RESEARCH Study of agents causing infectious diseases of fresh water and marine fish. Study of immune system of fish, evaluation of the immunological parameters to control the efficiency of the immune response, after vaccination, immunostimulation, stress response. Research on causative agents of fish diseases and pathogenesis. Biomolecular research on fish immune system and applied research on vaccine development MAIN RESEARCH ACTIVITY AND SCIENTIFIC COMPETENCE Experience mainly in the study of pathogenesis of infective diseases that interest domestic animals. For more than fifteen years, the research has been focalised on aquaculture of fish for Italy and U.E. This activity has interested 2 main sectors: 1. the study of agents causing infective diseases of fresh water and salt water fish, the study of the pathogenesis of these diseases includes the valuation of the factor of risk for the food security connected to the presence of pathologies in fish; 2. the study to improve the knowledge of immune system of fish, the evaluation of the immunological parameters to control the efficiency of the immunological state of the fish and use the parameters for the valuation of the welfare of the reared fish. Researches have been developed related to the following arguments. Research on causative agent of fish disease and pathogenic study: a. immunohistochemical study of Infectious haematopoietic necrosis virus (IHN) in rainbow trout; 3

b. immunohistochemical study of Streptococcosis caused by Lactococcus garviae in rainbow trout; c. pathologies affecting intensively reared sea bass, and sea bream with particular interest to pasteurellosis caused by Photobacterium damsela sub. piscicida, vibriosis cause by Vibrio spp., nodavirosis caused by Viral Encephalopatic Necrosis virus(ven-ver) affecting sea bass; characterisation of lesions determined by "Winter Syndrome" in reared gilthead sea bream; d. histological and ultrastructural evaluations on the phenomenon of opercular anomalies in gilthed sea bream; e. employment of histology and immunocytochemistry for physio-pathological evaluation of larvae of marine finfish species to establish a criteria for an histological grading. Biomolecular research on immune fish system of fish and applied research on vaccine development: a. application of immunological techniques for the evaluation of non-specific immunity in rainbow trout and sea bass (phagocytosis and respiratory burst) to be applied as criteria to evaluate the fish welfare; b. optimisation of in vitro culture of sea bass leukocytes, stimulation with mitogens and evaluation of cellular proliferation; c. evaluation of immunosuppressive induced status caused by uncorrected rearing techniques and caused by transmissible pathogens; d. development of vaccine and vaccine application trial on photobacteriosis in sea bream and sea bass and streptococcosis in rainbow trout. e. evaluation and application of immunostimolant substances to be used to improve the resistance of fish to stress induced to diseases and rearing and transporting conditions; RELEVANT RESEARCH FUNDING 2010/2012 Scientific co-ordination of the project "Innovative methods of vaccination of post-larval sea bass against Photobacterium damsela piscicida and Vibrio anguillarum: monitoring the immune response after vaccination." two years duration.
