Making Chocolate A Chocolate Beginning Did you know that chocolate comes from trees? Cacao trees grow deep in the jungles of South America. Pods filled with cocoa beans grow on the tree. People pick these beans to make chocolate. The beans cannot be used until they sit and harden. This takes about a week. Then, the beans are taken to chocolate factories. From Beans to Chocolate When the cocoa beans get to the factory, they are stored. Then, they are roasted at a very hot temperature. Next, a big machine takes the shell off the bean. It leaves the nib behind. The nibs are ground up into a liquid chocolate. To make the chocolate that we buy in the store, other things are added.
