July 2018 Page 2 MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES- June 7th, 2018 Meeting called to order Secretaries Report: Membership present approved the May meeting minutes as published in the club s newsletter. May board meeting minutes were read. Mail was read. Treasurers Report: Marie gave the financial report for May. President s Report: Wayne thanked all the club members that took time out on Memorial Day to walk in the Neenah-Menasha Memorial Day Parade. Wayne also reminded members that coming up next week on June 12 there will be voting here at the club so no one can use the front half of the building from Monday morning when they are setting up the voting booths until Wednesday. The back half of our building is okay to hold classes etc. Parades: Penney Garbe said we have the Flag Day Parade coming up this weekend Saturday June 9 th in Appleton. Wonderful news, the weather is predicted to be cooler than what we usually see this time of year. To walk in the parade with your dog you must be an approved member, because of our insurance, but you may walk yourself and help for example with our club s banner or you could walk with an invisible dog and this is always a crowd pleaser. It is important, when walking our dogs that they stay leashed. Also plan ahead on how you will be getting from the end of the parade, back to where you parked your vehicle at the beginning of the parade. Don t forget water for you and your dog and also poop bags for clean-up. And we can t forget that this is a fun way to earn three voluntary hours. The parade will be televised and then broadcast on WFRV channel 5 at 10:35 pm Saturday night. Membership: Prospective new members introduced themselves and they were welcomed by the membership present. Thank you Gayle Kukulka. 50/50 Raffle: Gayle Kukulka said she would be around shortly selling tickets for our club s 50/50 raffle that we hold every month at our meeting. The drawing will be shortly after the meeting is over. Canine CPR & First Aid Class: Len said that he is planning on having the next class on Monday July 2 from 6 to 10 pm. Some of our members have been asking for an evening class during the week and now is your chance!! You will learn how to keep your dog alive until you can get them to a vet. Cost for members is $35 and non-members is $45 so get signed up now. K-9 Kloset: Kayla Baudhuin was just a styling with some of the items that are available in the K-9 Kloset. Take the time and come to a meeting and see what all items are available to members now. Well worth the visit. Old Business: The club received a quote from Valley Sealcoat, Inc for fixing different areas in our parking lot. After a short discussion a motion was made to have the parking lot fixed. Motion: Go with Valley Sealcoat, Inc and have them fix different areas of our parking lot for $2310. Approved. Library: Ruth Holman said that in our library we have some duplicates for books and we are giving them away for free. She will set them out on the table where you first walk in and you are welcome to take one or more. New Business: It was brought up from the floor that we have a tree in the yard that should be cut down as soon as possible. The response was that it will be looked into. 60 th Anniversary Party: Megan Krema said that our 60 th party will be coming up on August 5 here at the club from noon until 4 PM. We will be celebrating paying off our mortgage along with our 60 th Anniversary as a club!!! This is for humans only, please leave your 4 footed friends at home. We will be having hamburgers, brats, hot dogs, salads and desserts. A sign-up sheet will be available online soon or contact Megan. Updates will be on our website Committee on committees: Copies of the prospective committee chairs were set out on the member s chairs before the meeting to give members a chance to look them over before the meeting. Motion made and approved to accept the committee chairs as presented.

July 2018 Page 5 New Meet the Trainer Series: Let s learn more about our Winnegamie trainers! We will be introducing our trainers in a new Meet the Trainer Series in the next few newsletters. Training is fun and rewarding, as well as a great way to bond with your dog. We are in need of training volunteers to assist with our classes (especially Puppy and Beginner). If you would like to learn more about helping with one of our classes, please contact Deb Zierler at 920-766- 1768, email: harvestimekennel@gmail.com Meet the Trainer- Jennifer Picard I have been helping with or teaching Puppy Obedience for 4 years. Ed and I joined the club before our puppy came home to us because we knew we wanted to take classes and get back into the dog world. At our first meeting, I was asked if I wanted to help with puppy class to get a feel for what it would be like when I started classes, I said sure, and have been volunteering ever since. I transitioned from helper to trainer by answering common questions and taking the lead on a topic or two each session, until I learned to teach them all. The time I spent as a helper was as useful in preparing me to be a trainer as my past experience with dogs. Like a lot of people in the club I grew up around dogs and dog sports. I call myself a second generation trainer because my mother, Kay Picard, was very involved in the sport of obedience with the family Sheltie and I went along to many trials as a kid. Eventually, my mother learned to be a trainer under local behaviorist June Ashford then at Golrusk, and I worked as kennel help through high school. Sometime during that work we met our first Greyhound and began fostering. My family has fostered over 150 greyhounds in about 20 years and had a few as our own. I went away to college and out on my own but remained involved with the foster work, helping teach basic obedience to get the dogs ready for new homes. I love Greyhounds but when the time was right to get a dog we knew they wouldn t fit our lifestyle and so Ed and I picked Smooth Collies. We have two Smooth girls- Ripley and Kenna. Ripley likes taking classes more than competing, and Kenna is just getting started in Rally, so we are always enrolled in something. I think taking classes makes me a better trainer, I don t lose sight of what it is like to be a student, and I am always learning too. I read and watch programs about dogs and training to keep myself current. I love teaching puppy classes because so many handlers are first time dog owners. Hopefully, I help them start becoming responsible dog owners with well-mannered dogs. I find it really rewarding to see my teams go on to higher classes, pass the CGC, or start competing in a dog sport.
