AKC Information Available online for Exhibitors: All exhibitors are encouraged to review: https://www.akc.org/sports/coursing/fast-cat/regulations/ AKC Regulations for Lure Coursing Tests and Trials / Regulations for Coursing Ability Tests (CAT)(Chapter XV) / Regulations For FAST CAT (Chapter XVI) published January 2017 AKC July 2018 major update titled 10 Regulations Approved for fast cat & New Best Practices Guide. AKC May 2018 update, subject: Distance Requirements for CAT and FAST CAT AKC May 2018 update, subject: FAST CAT Top 20 Fastest By Breed Modified to Average of Three Runs AKC April 2018 update, subject: Use of Head Halter Collars Permissible What is a Fast CAT? FAST CAT is a 100-yard dash Coursing Ability Test where a dog s time is converted to miles per hour. What must my dog do to pass a Fast CAT? Fast CAT, unlike the CAT, is not a pass/fail, but a timed 100 yard dash after a lure past a start line and over a finish line. The time is converted to MPH and then multiplied by a potential handicap based on the dog s height to award points. Can my dog earn an AKC title for Fast CAT? Titles are accumulated by accumulating points. A handicap system is applied to a dog s MPH to determine the number of points earned. The handicap is based on the height of the dog at its withers: o 18 or greater = handicap is 1.0 o 12 up to less than 18 = handicap is 1.5 o Below 12 = handicap is 2.0 Points = MPH multiplied by the dog s handicap. A dog s 100 yard dash time must be converted into MPH using the formula below, rounded to the nearest hundredth of a mile: 204.545 Dog s Time = MPH Example: The dog s time is 8.14 seconds. 204.54 / 8.14 = 25.13 MPH The following titles will be awarded: DCAT=500 points, FCAT=1,000 points, and FCAT followed by a number (e.g. FCAT2) for every additional 1,000 points. These suffix titles will appear on a dog s pedigree, with a higher level title superseding a lower level title. Safety: Lure coursing events are fun for dog and owner alike, but as a prey-driven activity which demands athletic exertion, there is always a concern for the safety of the dog. All decisions made concerning the running of a FAST CAT event should be based on what is safe for the dogs, participants, and spectators in accordance with AKC rules in effect on the date of the event. Collars/Muzzles: Dogs may run without a collar or wear any type of collar except choker collars, electronic training collars or head collar. Collars should be snug. Hanging tags pose a safety concern and it is suggested that tags be secured to the collar with tape. Dogs may run muzzled if desired. Clips or rubber bands may be used to keep long hair from falling across the dog s field of vision. A New Participant Orientation (Owner/Handler Meeting) will be held BEFORE dogs begin running; includes: Inspection: Each entry will be inspected for lameness, fitness to compete, and bitches in season. Roll Call Paddock Master: A critical member of the FAST CAT Committee is the Paddock Master. The Paddock Master shall ensure that as a FAST CAT entrant is being run, the next entrant is present at the FAST CAT entry area, but not so close as to potentially distract the running dog either visually or by excessive barking/howling. Start Line: The dog s front feet in the release area may be no further back than a line 10 feet behind the first timing poles or the first stopwatch operator s location (the start line ). Dogs may start with their front feet on this line or closer to the start line at the handler s discretion. Finish Line: The stop distance (the run out ) should be 30 to 50 yards. This allows for the lure to be taken at consistent speed until the dog has passed the end timing poles (which is important for accuracy), then given enough distance for the lure operator to gradually slow the lure without the dog risking hitting the barrier at the end of the track. Catcher: A suitable catcher for each entrant must be in place in the finish area prior to the FAST CAT entrant being released at the start of its test.
Additional pointers for Owners/Handlers Fitness is fundamental. Dogs can become very stimulated by the sight of a moving lure and an unfit dog may push itself too hard for its overall conditioning level. Bring your dog trim, well-hydrated, with nails of acceptable length to the FAST CAT starting line. Owners of dogs which can have difficulty in extremely hot or cold conditions should use good judgment and not endanger their dogs by running in conditions for which it is not well suited according to its age, coat type, or breed type. Make sure you walk your dog prior to its run to ensure muscles are warmed up ; also make sure to walk your dog after its run to cool down. Understand the rules. If you are unclear on any point, ask during the handler s meeting at the start of the event. Be prompt to the line. If exhibitors at a 60-dog event each take an extra minute to get to the line, the event runs an hour longer. Make sure that your dog has relieved itself prior to running. Volunteer to help. As FAST CAT, unlike CAT, requires both a releaser and a catcher, if you are by yourself offer to help others with this in exchange for help with running your dog. It s a great way to make a new friend! HAVE FUN! EXHIBITOR INFORMATION Make all checks and money orders payable to: Hampton Roads Obedience Training Club, Inc. (HROTC). Extreme weather conditions, such as, but not limited to snow storms, hurricanes, lightning, extreme heat, heavy rains, or other circumstances including, but not limited to, the condition of the facilities or grounds and/or the ingress and egress from the grounds, must be considered for the health and safety of the dogs, exhibitors and spectators. The well-being of dogs, exhibitors and spectators is of paramount importance and, in the event it is necessary to cancel or stop the show before completion, no refund of entry fee will be made. Exhibitors should follow their veterinarians recommendation to assure their dogs are free of internal and external parasites, any communicable diseases, and have appropriate vaccinations.
