Rectification LIÈGE GAME IN RANST In the show report of the National Show in Ranst, Belgium, in our former issue, we published a photo with the capiton: Head study of a Bruges Game. An attentive reader, Steven Henot, being the owner of this cock, wrote to us: This is a Liège Game and not a bad one either! It was Winner of the Game Fowl Show in Keulen, October 2011, awarded 97 points; also Winner of the Club show of the Belgian Game Club, April 2012 + Beste Belgian Game all over. In Ranst, this cock was in the PR display of the Belgian Breeds, on request of the chairman of the Association for the Promotion of Belgian Poultry Breeds. Steven Henot continued: It is a pity you didn t publish a photo of the Best of the Belgian Breeds Large Fowl That was also a Liège Game cock, entered by Pierre Vranken. Photo: The proud Liège Game cock of Steven Henot, photographed by Steven. However, we tried to, but our photographer did not succeed in taking a presentable photo of this Game cock; see the poor result on the right. With the help of Steven Henot we now got a nice picture of the winning Liège Game cock in Ranst, see next page.

PEAHEN WITH WHITE CHICKS By: Jonathan Thompson (UK)
The peahen in the photograph on the former page has been used to hatch and rear White Indian Peafowl chicks for many years. She is a Spalding s Peafowl ; a selection of the cross (Pavo cristatus nigrepennis X Pavo muticus imperator) X (Pavo cristatus nigrepennis X Pavo muticus imperator), originally made by the Californian socialite, the late Mrs Keith Spalding. This peahen and some of the White peahens, proved very sensible in their characters and always make nests within the garden, never venturing out into the open countryside that surrounds the house and grounds. Another important factor in the rearing of the young peachicks at liberty is that these birds never attempted to take the youngsters to roost up into high trees; in doing so, many chicks die through never reaching the mother-bird to be brooded.

PIGEONS AND HEAT By Mick Bassett Pigeons can suffer from heat stress but generally cope better than chicken (Pigeons metabolism is not so primitive). One point I have only experienced myself once, is giving pigeons bath water direct from the Tap (or Well!) on really hot days; something I have always done without thinking for years, with no problem. I had one bird (only one) suffer from under cooling; she obviously spent too long in the cold water, initially with a high body temperature (it was an English Show Tippler, they love sunbathing and bathing!) I dried her off with a towel and used a hair dryer on lukewarm and she was fine. I did keep here in for a day, as with Human drowning victims that are resuscitated in time, there can be complications (mainly breathing/heart stress).
It is very important to provide some shade for the pigeons, in flights/aviary, either natural (Nonpoisonous trees/plants) or a shade roof on the flight. Important also is good through air circulation in the Loft (absolutely essential for pigeons.) Most Pigeons will really enjoy being hosed down with a fine spray from the Garden hose. Obviously not in the loft, which needs always to be kept as dry as possible; a damp loft is an absolute Taboo with Pigeons (and Poultry). If space is limited or your pigeons must share a space (letting out in Rotation) then it is easy with heavy wire mesh (no frame needed) to make a Bathing Veranda attached to a loft window, this window can be permanently open if the mesh is small enough to keep out vermin or small predators; set just below the window ledge there is no risk that water can be splashed into the loft. An all wire 3x3x3 (1² meter ) is large enough to hold a large Bath Pan. Obviously longer is better as it gives the birds a sunbathing and drying off area. Pigeons will bath in ALL weathers; if no water is available mine have had a Snow bath! I have never seen a domestic Pigeon dust bath like poultry.
Advertisement On 1 and 2 September, the Belgium Waterfowl Association will for a third time organise the WATERFOWL SALE & SWAP MEETING Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2, 2012 from 10:00 to 18:00 This event will take place in Belgium, just across the border from Maastricht(NL) in the OC Ontmoetingscentrum Smeermaas Maaseikersteenweg 55 in Smeermaas ( Lanaken) Belgium Entry fee: 2,50 children up to 12 years, free. LARGER, MORE BEAUTIFUL AND INDOORS The SALE&SWAP meeting is no longer dependent on the weather because for the first time the event will take place indoors. During these 2 days a lot of beautiful and special varieties are offered. Wild ducks, geese and swans but also mutations and domesticated varieties will be present. Many waterfowl will also be for sale as individual birds. This is a good opportunity for breeders who do not need a pair but are looking for a female or a male only. http://www.watervogelbond.be/nl/watervogeldagenbeurs2012
