GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA RUBY ANNIVERSARY CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW CRITIQUE JUDGE JIM RICHARDSON It was indeed flattering to be invited to judge at the Clubʼs 40 th Anniversary Show. Many Congratulations must go to the Shows organisers whose attention to detail is second to none compared to similar Clubs worldwide. In comparison to 2005 when I judged the Show I found that the overall quality had marginally improved and there were many, many bitches with whom I would have been pleased to take home. In comparison to the UK I found that most exhibits were in good, well muscled condition and this on a whole resulted in positive animated movement. Sincere thanks to the Club for their kind hospitality throughout my stay and for Heather and Brian Scholz for their kindness. Special mention must go to Peter Andrews whom I found to be a great character. It is sad that there are few characters left in the dog game today. The Club are very fortunate in having him to assist them. Thanks also to Ffiona the Photographer for allowing me to have some of the excellent photographs of the principal winners. Lastly special thanks to Karenne for her organisation and for putting up with me. Top marks for whoever is responsible for the Show Catalogue. In all my travels have never seen one so good. I thoroughly enjoyed my days judging and was pleased to learn that many of my winners were closely related. It was good to have Mervyn Phillpott present at the Show as an onlooker. DOGS Minor Puppy 1. Handleyʼs & Cookeʼs Goldew Southern Son. An absolute picture giving total balance. Workmanlike head with intelligent expression. Correct body proportions. Reachy neck sloping into good shoulders and upper arm. Good bone and feet. Wide thighs with good bend of stifle. Excelled on the move with superb forward reach. A star in the making. 2. Mitchellʼs Kiriel Il Divo. Longer cast than 1. Good length of leg. Super neck and shoulders. Pleasing head with good proportions. Kind dark eye. Well developed hindquarters. Moved soundly in both directions. 3. Breenʼs Goldmartini Refusal May Offend (ai). Short in couplings. Clean outline with profuse coat. Good length of leg. Pleasing head with kind expression. Would like more reach of neck. Good bone and feet. Positive movement with good drive from strong hocks. Completing a trio of quality youngsters. Puppy 1. Clarkʼs Naragold Paradiso. WOW is the word to describe this one. Outstanding youngster who is just my cup of tea. Won this class with loads to spare. Presents a totally balanced outline and has good length of leg. Attractive masculine head which has so much work in it. Superb angles at both ends. Deep in brisket. Strong pasterns. Level topline. Covered the ground with ease and style. Very hard to fault in any way. Would love to own him. 2. Josephʼs Baradav Neon Light. Spoilt with the lack of second thigh and bend of stifle. Beautiful head with such soft expression. Good forehand construction. Tight fitting elbows on good forelegs. Moved OK considering the lack of development in hindquarters. 3. Williams Chaleur Espirit De Corps Critique removed at request of owner. Junior 1. Fuller & Martinʼs Goldmartini Say It Like It Is. He is all dog with deep mature body. Good length of leg. Handsome head properties with good chiselling. Dark, kind eye. Strong, level topline. Well developed hindquarters. Strong pasterns and hocks. Effortless free flowing movement..

2. Danielʼs Fernfall Finders Keepers. Would like more length to the leg. Not hiding anything today as he was very short of coat. Clean outline with no exaggerations. Nicely proportioned head with kind expression. Short in couplings. Correct earset. Well off for bone. Strong hocks which he used to advantage to motor round the ring. 3. Thomsonʼs Chaleur Double or Nothing. This one needs more time to drop into himself. Pleasing head with intelligent expression. Good length of leg with short couplings. Would prefer more layback of shoulder and upper arm. Handler tends to overstretch him on occasions. Strong pasterns. Positive, true movement in both directions. Intermediate 1. Danielʼs Ch Fernfall Dare To Dream. One of great presence and attitude. Loved his size and balance. No exaggerations in any form. Beautiful head with soft expression. Dark, well shaped kind eye. Well laid back shoulders with good upper arm. Mature, well ribbed body. Deep in brisket, good straight front with tight fitting elbows. Strong hocks which he used to advantage on the move. Excellent forward reach. Tail carried slightly high whilst moving. 2. Fallʼs Ch Fernfall Let Me Entertain You. Another worthy title holder who has great depth of quality. Slightly less mature than 1. Attractive head with so much work in it. Super balanced outline. Excellent forehand construction. Good width of thigh and bend of stifle. Excelled on the moved with balanced strides. Well presented and handled. 3. Murphyʼs Baradav Murphyʼs Law. Super overall quality which is spoilt for me by his lack of length of leg. Very hard to fault otherwise. Excellent forehand with well developed hindquarters to match. Gorgeous head with intelligent expression. What about those laughing eyes?? Good spring of rib on firm mature body. Covered the ground with ease. State Bred Dog 1. Josephʼs Aust. Grand Ch Baradav Flying Solo. Very much lacking in coat which gives the immature appearance for this 5 year old. Pleasing head with good proportions. Typical expression but would prefer a darker eye. Good forehand. Would prefer more bend of stifle. Moved well on balanced, free strides. 2. Reimannʼs Ch Bournbeau Tartan Bruce CCD. A bit too heavy in head for me. Short coupled with strong topline. Good bone and feet. Tight fitting elbows. Moved well using his strong hocks Australian Bred 1. Thomsonʼs Chaleur Craftsman (ai). One who has great presence and attitude for the show ring with the necessary qualities to match. He could go all day and his movement was a pleasure to witness. Attractive masculine head with intelligent, typical expression. Excellent lay back of shoulder and length of upper arm. Table-top topline. Good straight front with tight fitting elbows. Strong bone, pasterns and hocks. In tip-top condition. His coat was gleaming with health and vitality. Well presented. Res CC. 2. Handley & Petterwoodʼs Ch Larbellah Team Leader. Quality all through. Well put together with no exaggerations. Possesses great balance. Good workmanlike head with intelligent expression. Good reach of neck flowing into the withers. Excellent forehand construction. Well developed hindquarters. Level tail carriage. Moved out with great purpose and style. Excellent breed type. 3. Fallʼs Ch. Fernfall Daydreambeliever. Not as mature as the first two. Loved his head which was well chiselled. Soft, kind expression. Superb forehand construction. Strong topline whilst standing

but lost it slightly on the move. Strong pasterns and hocks. Moved with drive and enthusiasm. Nice type. Open 1. Listʼs Ch Haydengold Power of One. A dog who is in his prime and oozes quality. Was presented in such hard condition which is a credit to his owner. Possesses most of the essentials although his head is not the type which I look for but is still typical of the breed. Has great ring presence and attitude although he canʼt be easy to handle as he is so full of himself. Well angled at both ends which gives him total balance and has the length of leg to complete the picture. No exaggerations in any form. Well ribbed body. In full, gleaming coat. Moved with strong drive from the rear and excellent forward reach. He is so light on his feet they barely touch the ground. Very stylish. My CC winner. 2. Danielʼs Ch Arangolds Watching On High (Imp NZ). Good balance and length of leg. Beautiful head with so much work in it. Kind, typical expression from the darkest of eyes. Would prefer slightly longer neck. Good lay back of shoulder and straight front. Deep brisket and strong over the loin. Moved well on balances strides. Excellent breed type. 3. McGraths Ch Alnclair Gillys Hero. Lovely type who fills the eye. Longer cast and slightly shorter in the leg than the first two. Gorgeous head with soft expression. Kind eye. Excellent pigmentation. Good forehand with hindquarters to match. Moved with style. Veteran 1. McGraths Alnclair Rickys Revenge. 11 year old who is wearing well and showing little sign of aging. Very much my kind of head. Such a soft expression. Well made throughout. Great attitude with super so willing to please temperament. Holds himself well on the move. BITCHES Baby Puppy 1. Goldshyne Kennels Kaparla Gosh Im Posh. Very easy to get carried away by describing this Wonderful, Breathtaking, Excellent, Superb 5 month old whom I would love to own. She is the most exciting Baby Puppy I have ever judged in any Country over 21 years. I could rave about her all day. Summing up she is quality, sweet, feminine, elegant, stylish and sound. Straight out of the top drawer. 2. Woodʼs Aurumgold Dixie Chick. Just turned 4 months and very much a baby puppy. Sweet head and expression. Good layback of shoulder. Wide thighs with good bend of stifle. Good bone and feet. Excelled on the move which was effortless and stylish. 3. Woodʼs Aurumgold Duchess Kate. Litter sister to second. Similar remarks apply but just preferred the topline of 2. Minor Puppy 1. Staffordʼs Goldew Mamma Mia. Won on her balanced clean outline. Another one full of quality and promise. Very elegant with her reachy neck and well developed hindquarters. Beautiful, feminine head. Very steady and settled on the move for one so young. 2. Breenʼs Goldmartini Y Coz I Can (ai) Very sweet. Mature and short in couplings. Good length of leg. Excellent forehand. Good width of thigh but would prefer to see more bend of stifle which may come with maturity. Good bone and feet. Strong pasterns. Covered the ground with ease.

Puppy 1. Griersonʼs Naragold Georgie Girl. Litter brother to my Junior Dog winner. Different in type but possesses many of the same qualities. Gorgeous mid gold coat. Super clean elegant outline. Well put together. Beautiful feminine head with typical expression. Kind, dark eye Good bone and feet. Her movement was a joy to behold with such balanced free strides. Seems to be a clever breeder. 2. Mitchellʼs Beaucroft Faith In You And Me (ai) Mature with good outline although on occasions falls away on topline when standing. Gorgeous, feminine head. She excels on the move which is effortless and holds herself well. Good angles at both ends which presents a very balanced outline. 3. Thomsonʼs Chaleur Enchanted. Very elegant outline. Sweet feminine head. Well angled at both ends. Covered the ground with ease and style. Junior 1. McGraths Alnclair Poppy In The Field. Handler could do more with this one but just saw enough of her qualities to justify her placing. The most beautiful of heads, very much my cup of tea. Kind, dark eye. Elegant balanced outline. Good bone and feet. Moved out well with good forward reach. 2. Listʼs Haydengold Fall from Grace (ai) Mature, clean balanced outline. Pleasing head with good dark points. Reachy neck flowing into good shoulder placement. Strong, level topline. Good straight front with tight fitting elbows. Her movement could not be bettered. Very stylish. Just preferred head of 1. 3. Fallʼs Fernfall Give Me Goosebumps. One who was hiding nothing today as she was very much lacking in coat. Nice quality bitch who possesses many of the essentials. Sweet, feminine head. Would prefer more length to the upper arm. Nice flow into the withers. Good width of thigh. Covered the ground with ease when she settled. Intermediate - My class of the day. 1. Handleyʼs Giltedge Sister Act. This was the one for me. Quality from nose to tail without any suggestion of exaggerations. Good height to length proportions which gives her total balance. So much work in this beautiful head with the correct chiselling. Soft, kind expression coming from those dark well shaped eyes. Well angled firm body properties. Put down to perfection. Her effortless movement was an absolute dream. CC and BIS. 2. Keltonʼs Majikʼs Truly Julie (Imp Finland). Another 2 year old whom is teeming with quality and possesses most of the essentials. My head of the day which is so feminine and attractive. Those eyes just melt me. Superb forehand. Hindquarters a bit over-angulated. In excellent, hard condition. Strong over the loin. Top marks for presentation. Very stylish on the move which was positive and true. Pleased to award her RCC 3. Goldshyne Kennels Parkridge Legal Prospect Lovely type who is so elegant and feminine. Another beautiful head with so much work in it. Reachy neck flowing into the withers. Strong topline. A bit short of furnishings. Good width of thigh and bend of stifle. Positive, stylish movement in both directions supplied by strong hocks and well angulated forehand. A trio of wonderful, quality bitches. State Bred. 1. Wallisʼs Boolaroo Herbal Esscence. Well angulated at both ends but would like to see more length to the leg. Pleasing head with intelligent expression. Prefer more reach to the neck. Firm, well muscled body. Moved soundly and with purpose.

2. Josephʼs Ch Baradav Like Your Style (ai) Nicely made bitch who was lacking in coat. Good forehand construction with nice flow into the withers. Pleasing head with good shaped eye giving typical expression. Covered the ground with ease. 3. Thomsonʼs Chaleur Absolutely Fabulous. A little unsure of herself. Good typical head. Short in couplings. Positive movement. Australian Bred 1. Thomsonʼs Chaleur Catwalk (ai) Eye catching bitch who has a lot to offer. Gorgeous Head with good chiselling. Kind expressive eyes. Clean elegant outline with no exaggerations. Good reach of neck flowing into the withers. Good layback but would like to see more upper arm. Well developed hindquarters. Not in the best of coats. Moved with drive and enthusiasm. 2. Blissʼs Ch Oceanviews Southern Belle. Good shape and balance. Feminine head with typical expression. Well laid shoulders with good length of upper arm. Deep in brisket. Strong over the loin. Level topline. In nice condition. Sound in both directions. Carried her tail a bit high. 3. McGraths Ch Alnclair Aiming High. Mature deep body. Attractive head with attentive, kind expression. A little throaty. Good straight front with tight fitting elbows. Moved well on balanced free strides. Lovely type. Open 1. Thomsonʼs Ch. Dewmist Silvering (imp Swd). Great outline with super firm body. Good height to length proportions. Well proportioned head. Would prefer darker eye. Super angles at both ends. Strong level topline. Nice type of bitch whose coat was on the blow. Presents a very balanced picture. Loved her head which was so typical. Intelligent expression. Good body properties. Strong over the loin. Excelled on the move. Good breed type. Veteran. Although only 3 present, this class caused me the most difficulty as ages ranged from 7 to 11. 1. McGraths Ch. Alnclair Ann Anticipation. I gave this one first in the Open class when I judged at this Show in 2005. Still moving really well at 11 years. She has the head and expression which I admire. In good coat and condition. A lovely type of bitch. Kind, happy temperament. 2. Handley & Petterwoodʼs Ch. Giltedge Angel Dust. Super balanced outline. Looks and moves much younger than her 7 years. Pleasing head. Well made throughout. Not in the best of coats. Good overall breed type. 3. Fosterʼs Ambervalley Bonnie Banks. Loved her head and kind expression. Good clean outline.
