More than just a market MARKET NEWS FOR TUESDAY 7 TH FEBRUARY Manager s Mutterings A miserable wet Tuesday morning at Melton today, farmers were able to concentrate on their livestock, with 411 head of cattle of which all sold and 2,641 head of sheep entered. Prime cattle keenly fought over today with over 100 clean forward and 20 plus cows. Good show of butchers cattle today with Rob Davies of Gaddesby topping the market with a showy Limousin x heifer at 239p/kg (1,457.90) and bought by Deakin Butchers of Sutton in Ashfield, Mansfield. Many other prime heifers selling well and found homes to local butchers. Barren cows remain a good trade and are being sought after, the best of which today was for Ian Nourish of Illston on the Hill and his Limousin x cow at 181p/kg. Prices remaining very strong for all types of store cattle. The weaned calves had a healthy 171 head forward with many quality amongst them and topping at 970 for J Smith of Brinsley for a Limousin x heifer and 875 for Mark Green of Irnham, Limousin x steers. Next week we have a good entry booked in already with buyers in place. In the strong stores, J Plant of Packington took the honours with his Limousin x steers at 1,200 and R V Tomlinson of Stoke Golding 940 topping the heifers. Barrie Williamson reported good prices throughout the baby calves and the best over 300 per head. He also commented on 161 pigs forward with good pigs on offer, but buyers not as keen as pork demand has fallen since Christmas. Tom reports a firmer trade in the sheep shed for meat, with both hoggs and ewes selling to a marginally better trade. Some good sheep being marketed now with root hoggs coming onto the market. We have a strong, regular following of buyers so please let Tom know what you intend bringing so he can inform those buyers. The first few ewes and lambs were forward today with some full mouth Texels with smart twin lambs at foot reached 60 which indicates a fair bit of confidence in the coming season. It is with great sadness I have to inform you of the passing of Anthony Eggleston of Brentingby, a well respected farmer and a good person of Melton Mowbray where he has many friends. Our thoughts go to his family and friends at this sad time. The funeral will take place at Wyfordby Church on the 22nd February at 2.30pm Matt Claxton, who has been selling tools in the market for 26 years, has bravely decided to run the London Marathon this April in aid of CLIC Sargeant, who support children with cancer and their families. We wish Matt good luck in his endeavours and anyone who wishes to sponsor him can do so via https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/matt-claxton
