Tuesdays, May 10, 17, 24, 2016 - Dog Obedience Training Classes May 10th, 2016, Hamilton County Faigrounds first year members & dogs in Dog Obedience ONLY 4-H members, your spring/ summer dog training schedule will begin on Tuesday, May 10 th, (for first year members and 1 st year dogs in Dog Obedience project area) and run every Tuesday until the 4-H Dog Obedience Show on Tuesday, July 19th at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. 1st year members and members with new dogs are to be present with their dogs at 7:00 p.m. May 17h will be for all participants and their dogs 1st year members and members with new dogs are to be present with their dogs at 6:30 p.m. Showmanship training begins at 7:30 p.m. Advance training at 8:00 p.m. for 4-H ers and dogs previously involved in the Obedience Training. Parents are encouraged to attend these workshops. 4-H ers YOU MUST bring the following items and forms (if you haven t already turned them into Virgene or Donna) before you can participate... (Dogs will not be allowed to be unloaded at training session, if these forms are not presented prior to attending your 1 st training session. DUE JUNE 1st 2016 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference: Dive to New Depths, June 28 30 DUE MAY 15th Materials have been updated on the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference website and registration is live. The state 4 H council is excited for the plans they have in store for this year s event. The right hand part of the web page has a box titled Registration. There, you ll find a link to register for conference that will take you directly to the process by registration services. In addition to the link to register, you ll also find hard copies of the registration materials. The registration program will not require delegates to pay when they register. FOOD & NUTRITION CHALLENGE CLASS Challenge Class: Challenge Class is based on all participants using the same recipe and trying to achieve a perfect standard product. This year s recipes challenges the use of the cookie method. Also see General rules and Regulations 1-15. 1. Any 4-H Member is eligible to enter. Member does not have to be enrolled in the 4-H Food and Nutrition project. 2. Member may enter one entry. 3. Entry should be made to the Hamilton County Extension Office by June 27. 4. Food entry should be placed on a firm disposable plate and sealed inside a plastic bag. Entry tag with member s name should be attached. Your best 5 rolls. 5. Bring exhibit to Hamilton County Fair on 4-H exhibit Judging Day for designated club time on Monday, July 18. 6. Only use the following recipe to present your best 5 rolls. Use only listed ingredients. Do not substitute or change amounts. 7. No written recipe or write up is required for this class. 8. Entry is judged on standard product qualities. There is no conference judging of this class. Recipe for 2016 4-H Youth Challenge Class Butterhorn Rolls Source: 1st United Church of Christ Cookbook 1994; Page 37 1 pkg. yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons) ½ cup sugar ¼ cup warm water (115 F) 3 eggs 2 Tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup whole milk, scalded (180 F) 1 ½ cups graham flour ½ cup Crisco shortening 3 to 3 ½ cups white flour Dissolve yeast in warm water and 2 Tablespoons sugar. Scald milk; add shortening, sugar, eggs and salt. Add 1 ½ cups graham flour and stir. Add yeast mixture. Add rest of flour until dough loses its sheen. Let rise until double. Punch down. Divide dough in thirds. Roll each third into a 10 circle on lightly floured board. Cut each into 12 pie shaped pieces. Roll from wide edge to point to make crescent. Place on greased baking pan in curved crescent shape. Rolls may be lightly brushed with melted butter to remove visible flour. Cover with light towel. Adult Food and Nutrition Challenge Recipe 2016 1. Any Adult volunteer, relative, or former 4-H er may enter. 2. One entry per person. 3. Entry may be submitted on judging day July 18 and need not be preregistered. 4. Bring entry to Hamilton County Fair between 8 am and 3 pm July 18 to 4-H exhibit building. 5. Food entry should be placed on a firm disposable plate and sealed inside a plastic bag. Entry tag with name should be attached. 6. Only use the following recipe to present your best 5 rolls. Use only listed ingredients. Do not substitute or change amounts. 7. No written recipe or write up is required for this class. 8. Entry is judged on standard product qualities. There is no conference judging of this class. 2016 - Graham Clover Rolls Source: http://americanheritagecooking.com/2014/02/graham-clover-rolls-one-year-anniversary/ 2 cup hot whole milk 1 teaspoon sugar 2 tablespoons molasses 1 cup whole-wheat flour 1 packet dried active yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons) About 5 cups graham flour (Bob Red Mills) Add molasses & salt to the hot milk & let it cool until it is lukewarm. (110 F) While milk mixture is cooling, add ¼ cup of warm water (110 F) to the yeast & stir to mix. Then added 1 teaspoon of sugar. Add the yeast to the milk mixture & stir to mix. Add all the whole wheat flour & three cups of graham flour. Knead by Kitchen Aide-Using a bread hook attachment on your mixer or a wooden spoon, mix & continue adding graham flour until you have a stiff dough. Set on speed 2, & let it work until the dough climbed up the hook & cleaned the sides of the bowl, about two minutes. Knead on speed 2 for an additional two minutes. Or knead By Hand-Press the dough away with the palms of your hand. Stretch the dough from the edge, folding back edge over to the center. Press the dough away with the palms of your hands, exerting sufficient force to cause the part folded over to adhere to the mass under it, & repeat folding. Turn dough one-quarter around & repeat kneading. Continue turning, folding & kneading until dough is smooth & elastic & will not stick to an unfloored board. Grease large bowl with vegetable oil. Place dough in bowl & turn the dough to cover all sides with oil. Cover with warm, damp towel & place in a warm place (80-85 F) for an hour, or until the dough is triple its size. Grease 32 muffin tins. Punch down dough and allow to rise a second time till double around 1 hour) Shape clover rolls by pinching off pieces of dough that are roughly 1 size. Shaped them, & pressed three into each greased muffin tin. Repeat this step until all the dough is gone. Lightly brush rolls with melted butter. Cover pans with a saran wrap and a damp cloth Photo Challenge Our theme will be SHADOWS Participants may enter up to 3 photos. Two MUST be taken in Hamilton County, Iowa one may be taken outside of Hamilton County. The place where the photo was taken must be documented on the back of the photo. The photos may be used by the County Conservation; those will become the property of the County Conservation if they so request them. There will be four divisions. Junior, Intermediate, Senior and an Adult class The photo entries are to be 5 X 7 s, and mounted (either surface or window mounts). They will be entered on July 18th during the normal 4-H exhibit judging and will not be conference judged. The judging for this Challenge Class will be done during the county fair by a team of judges.

Sunday, May 1st 1:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. The Hamilton County Sheep & MEAT Goat Weigh-In will be held on Sunday, May 1st, 1:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. We are asking that when you enter the fairgrounds drive straight ahead to the road on the west side of the Show Arena and STOP and COME INTO the Show Arena. We will need both the exhibitor and one of their parents to come in and fill out the need ed forms. When you unload your lambs please sort and pen lambs per exhibitor PRIOR to going to the scale and if going to State Fair have these lambs sorted and marked prior to going to the scale. After your animals have been weighed and tagged, you will bring the weigh-in tickets back to the Fair office to be recorded on your ID forms and pay your tag fee's ($1.50 per tag/animal) and State Fair ID fee's ($6 per animal, if participating). All 2016I Iowa State Fair market sheep exhibitors will be charged a fee of $6.00 for each head they nominate for State Fair (maximum number 12 /head). All breeding ewes HAVE to have a 4-H tag and be eye scanned if going to State Fair. If you plan to have your animal shown as a breeding sheep you will need to bring the following information with you also (Breed, Tattoo, Sire Name or registration number for each animal nominated as a breeding animal). State Fair exhibitors also need to have someone (either themselves, a parent, or another adult) who is able to hold your state fair lambs while the eye scans are taken. Each family has to take care of this procedure to prevent the spread of Lamb Fungus. AK SAR Ben charge is $5.00/head to nominate animals. Important Rule Reminders for 2016! ALL meat goats for State Fair eligibility need retinal images (both market and breeding) Meat Goat does can now be shown in the market class along with wethers; however, a doe can only show market or breeding, not both Sheep & Meat Goat Weigh In Market Meat Goats (both market wethers and market does) need a 4-H tag and images Breeding Meat Goat Does need either a 4-H tag OR official tattoo; AND Birth Date in 4hOnline Official Tattoo: Left Ear = Individual animal identifier; Right Ear = Herd Prefix Sheep: ALL sheep (market, breeding (both commercial and purebred) need a tag AND retinal images collected for State Fair eligibility LIVESTOCK IDENTIFICATION All animals to be shown at a 4-H show must be registered in 4honline before May 15 th. Be sure to read your identification instructions thoroughly and fill it all out COMPLETELY. The forms are located on your 4honline account. If you do not get this process done prior to May 15th, YOU will not be able to SHOW your animals at the Hamilton County Fair or IA State Fair. (The system crashed on May 15 th DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE 15 th TO GET THIS DONE DO IT TODAY!!!! ABSOLUTE DEADLINE for entering your animals is May 15. Hamilton County Fair Entries DUE June 27th 4-H Hamilton County Fair Entry Forms and Participation forms are to be filled out, and taken to Hamilton County Extension Office along with your check made out to the Hamilton County Fair for Livestock entry fees. This is one of the premier events in the country, the Iowa State Fair livestock shows are a chance to showcase our 4-H accomplishments.
