Advanced Animal Care of Colorado & Dog Tales August 15, 2015 Daycare Dog of the Month Ares started joining us for daycare in the spring of this year. He's a feisty little guy who absolutely loves playing with the Jolly Balls in the daycare yard and thrives on getting attention from the attendants, even if he shows it with gentle growls. He recently moved to Florida with his parents and we will miss grumpy little face in daycare! Introducing Dog Tales Memberships We are proud to present our new Dog Tales daycare memberships! We have three packages to suit every dogs need! Check out our packages below. Memberships will begin in September. We will be updating our website next week with all the details so please stay tuned! https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1121986430271&format=html&printframe=true 1/5
Pooch Plunge! The years most fun even is coming up soon. The Pooch Plunge is a great time for dogs and humans alike. The City of Fort Collins dedicates the last open day of the city park pool to the pooches! Dogs love this event as the pool turns into a giant doggie swimming pool and all the pooches plunge from all sides, slides and swings, splashing all day long. This great even takes place on Labor Day and you can buy tickets here at Advanced Animal Care of Colorado. Advanced sales tickets are $5 and you can buy them at the door for $8. We look forward to seeing you there! Dog Tales Rescues We introduced Huxley a couple months ago, and then told his success story. We now have the sad news that he is once again looking for a home. His name has changed to Denali and he's currently undergoing some medical treatments, but he's the same loving, sweet guys he's been from the start. He needs space to run and play and most importantly, he needs a loving forever home to give this boy what he deserves. Shady is a sweet, loving cat also looking for a forever home. He was rescued by one of our regular clients who lodges his cat here with us from time to time. Shady was living in a place where his owner did not take care of him, leaving him to fend for himself outside for months at a time. He was finally brought to us for medical care and a safe haven until he finds his https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1121986430271&format=html&printframe=true 2/5
forever home. If you are interested in any of our rescues, please contact Erin in Dog Tales. Rescue Success Story! We are happy to share that Jax has found his forever home! He stayed with us for more than 4 months, in search of the perfect family and that family finally came to him. He's now living happily with his new dad in Boulder where he enjoys going hiking and swimming to his hearts content. We are so happy for Jax but will miss his smiling face in Dog Tales! Daycare with Lodging Rate Change Dog Tales is making some changes with our daycare lodging rates. We will no longer be offering free daycare with lodging unless your dog is a regular daycare client. If your pup joins us regularly, they will be able to enjoy free half days of daycare on us. They'll have the option to upgrade to a full day for only $5. If your dog does not join us regularly for daycare the rate will be $5 for a half day and $10 for a full day of daycare. Kennel Cough Information If you did not receive the kennel cough information email from a couple weeks ago, please read below for information regarding the recent kennel cough outbreak here and in the Fort Collins area. Infectious Tracheobronchitis can be caused be a variety of bacteria and viruses, and usually by a combination thereof. These may include: Bordetella bronchiseptica Parainfluenza virus Adenovirus type 2 Canine distemper virus Canine influenza virus Canine herpesvirus (very young puppies) Mycoplasma canis Canine reovirus There are vaccines for some of these causes, but some have no vaccine. It is also common that a vaccine does not 100% prevent infection but may lessen the degree of illness. At Advanced Animal Care, we were able to determine that our most recent outbreak was caused by Parainfluenza virus, with many patients having a secondary Mycoplasma infection. The cause was identified when multiple patients were positive for these agents using PCR (polymerase https://ui.constantcontact.com/visualeditor/visual_editor_preview.jsp?agent.uid=1121986430271&format=html&printframe=true 3/5
chain reaction) testing and culture of respiratory secretions. Parainfluenza is included in core vaccinations that include Distemper virus and Parvo virus (also called DA2PP, DAPP, or DAP). Since Dog Tales requires Distemper and Parvo vaccines for all lodging, daycare, and grooming patients, those patients would have also have be vaccinated for Parainfluenza. Even though dogs are vaccinated for Parainfluenza, young and old dogs may still be susceptible to infection, especially if it is a virulent strain. We have treated patients that do not attend Dog Tales for coughing, so infection is likely also being spread through dog parks and other pet facilities around town. Please note that Parainfluenza virus is different from the Influenza virus which can cause a more serious respiratory infection. There is no vaccine for Mycoplasma, and this is usually a normal bacteria of the respiratory tract that overgrows during times of illness. If you notice any coughing from your dog, please notify the veterinary staff at Advanced Animal Care or your regular veterinarian to help determine if your pet requires treatment (often an antibiotic and a cough suppressant). To prevent further spread, we ask that you do not bring your coughing dog to daycare. They may return when they are no longer coughing and finished with their treatments. If your dog is coughing and scheduled to lodge with us, please contact us to make special lodging arrangements. Feel free to contact Advanced Animal Care and Dog Tales if you have any questions on our current outbreak of Infectious Tracheobronchitis or the health of your pet.
