Welcome to our 16th Annual Sale! What a strange year! Both KCC & DRI were in record-setting droughts and made it into D-5 early in the summer. Crops were terrible. A lot of our customers found themselves in the same boat (to use a poor euphemism!). Then in August, some rains started coming. While the grass looks good now, DRI still has dry ponds and winter is coming fast. On the other hand, parts of the state grew incredible crops and will have record setting years. Then trade issues made all the markets a roller coaster ride. We titled this year s ads and sale CERTAINTY. How do you plan and predict when you don t know what Mother Nature and the markets are going to throw your way? A solid, functional, and well thought out breeding program is FOUNDATIONAL. As your seedstock provider, you can be assured your bulls & heifers are coming from programs with a long history of making sure functionality is there first. Calve every year, breed back on range without extra feed, roam up and down and thrive in the rocky Flint Hills and feet and legs that hold up. We call that Baking the Cake. Then and only then do we start to look at the frosting. Let those calves go on and hang the kind of carcasses that earn you premiums on the grid. The net effect? When times get tough and markets get uncertain, you ll still have cows that get it done without extras resources and a lot of fuss. All the latest & greatest numbers count for (less than) nothing if your cows aren t bringing in a calf. Every. Single. Year. We, unlike most seedstock producers, have both commercial herds and a feedyard (KCC), so we use our own genetics and make sure the breeding choices we make work in the real world. Our goal is to optimize production, not maximize it. The biggest difference between those two terms is cost of production and longevity of the cowherd. We don t strive for the highest EPDs; we strive to have a BALANCE of all traits and cows that require no pampering. We may end up with some top-tier EPDs, but that is an end result of a PROGRAM; not a goal in and of itself. Optimum, not maximum, so you can have greater CERTAINTY. We are thrilled that the majority of our customers are repeat customers, and some of you have been with us since our private treaty days. We are humbled by that and proud to call you friends. Like any good friendship, you can count on us to be there for you for the long-haul and treat you like we would any friend. Heck; the Kniebels are celebrating their 140th year ranching this year. Talk about longhaul AND CERTAINTY! Finally, we are so thankful for both our families. Long hours, tough work, special favors, and unfailing support. The Kniebel kids are all independent adults now and the Carpenters are both in college. ALL of them are integral to the operations and help out a lot. Our parents & non-ranching siblings also pitch in and help us pull this off every year. We couldn t and wouldn t do it without ALL of them. We love you all. Thank you! 2010 BIF Commercial Producer of the Year Chuck & Kim Kniebel 2008 BIF Commercial Producer of the Year Jake Wilson Matt Harrison Kevin & Mary Ann Kniebel Cassie & Clay Joe Carpneter & Barb Downey Anna & Laura Carpenter Spencer Jones 3

The Star System On all our bulls, we put a box of stars at the bottom. This lets us take multiple EPDs along with what we know about the cow families and the conditions of that production year and summarize it all for you. In other words, if they re a 4 star Calving sire, we know that the shape of that bull, his data & pedigree and his mother s history all combine to make him one we wouldn t hesitate to use on heifers. 3 stars means we d use him on heifers UNDER SUPERVISION. Does this mean one star is a cow-killer? Absolutely not. We would NEVER sell anything we would not use in our own herds. PERIOD. One star calving ease means use on mature cows without a history of problems. For females, we re taking longevity, udder structure, fertility under range conditions, mature size, fleshing ability, etc into account. That a bull gets 3 stars means he probably has a young dam or we don t have a lot of experience with his sire. & growth follow the same principles. Actual Performance, Genomics, and EPDs EPDs take into account individual performance, genomics & ancestry across different production systems, climates, herds, etc. instead of just one individual s performance in one herd in one set of circumstances in that particular year. Therefore, we consider EPDs (in general) a better indicator of that animal s genetic abilities than actual performance. In the case of Embryo Transfer, a bull s actual performance is meaningless in the calculations because you can t account for the affect of the recipient dam. We have some bulls who are older than the average by quite a bit, and some that are younger. The breed associations take that data and adjust it using many variables and come up with a standardized number so that bulls can be compared on a more even footing. For example, what would this bull have weighed at 1 year old (365 days) given that he weighed 1325 when he was 400 days old coming off test. This tends to overcompensate younger bulls and penalize older bulls, especially in a herd s comprised of earlier maturing cattle. This is why we recommend you look at over actual performance. That is also why an older bull with an 1150 lb actual yearling weight might have a 1050 lb adjusted YW yet a higher YW EPD than a younger bull with a heavier ADJUSTED YW. Clear as mud? Like Every Year: Bulls Will Sell in Catalog Order!!!! In order to make life easier for you, we are going to sell bulls in the same order they re printed in the catalog. Please do not read anything into the sale order itself. The order is dependent on who would pen with whom (and not fight!) and how the bulls fit on a page with any available pictures. It is not meant to imply that any one bull is better than another! 4 We are pleased to again broadcast the Kniebel Cattle Co. and Downey Ranch, Inc. Production Sale live over the Internet. AGAIN THIS YEAR: Proxy Bidding Available. This means you can put in your maximum bid ahead of the sale at your convenience. Then on sale day, the computer bids for you. NO ONE, not even DVAuction, knows what that your max is. If something happens to your connection or you can t be in front of the computer, your bidding still gets done for you. Example You put in a proxy for $5000 on Lot 12. An opposing bidder drops out at $3700. You own Lot 12 for $3800. First Time Users: 1. Visit the DVAuction web site at www.dvauction.com 2. Click on the Create New Account link at the top of the page. 3. Complete Registration and Apply to bid at the Kniebel and Downey Production Sale. 4. DVAuction will contact your bank to verify information. 5. DVAuction will then contact you to let you know you ve been approved to bid and buy at the sale live from your computer at home. After the sale: We will contact you to arrange payment and delivery. Alternately, you are welcome to call us. Note: You must have high speed internet access (DSL, T-1, or Broadband) to be able to bid during the sale. Any questions: Contact Tami with DVAuction at (308) 870-3661 or e-mail: tmcintosh@dvauction.com Or call DVAuction s main office at (402)316-5460. We recommend that you register by Oct. 31 for on-line bidding. Every attempt will be made to complete your application even if it is on sale day. Questions? Call us or DV Auction for more information. Not comfortable with the internet or afraid you ll be busy in the field? We have purchased many bulls for customers sight-unseen and got them for less than the prearranged limit with 100% satisfaction. We ll discuss your needs, figure out the best purchasing system and match up the bulls that will suit you best. Just visit with us before the sale and we ll work together to find the best option for you. At the end of the day, we re not happy until you re happy.

Let US handle the nasty weather. YOU stay in bed! 5

20 Month 100% 1A Red Angus Bulls EPD CHANGES The biggest single change to calculating in Red Angus History The Red Angus Association has implemented a new EPD system that combines DNA information and data from the animals using an incredible new system for much better accuracy. It is still a little bit of a work in progress, but encompasses over 5 million animals and a lot more data. There are still some adjustments being made but it should be a system that can we rely on for more accurate information in projecting a bull s progeny. The biggest change is in the base that we measure animals against. It has changed to the Simmental breed base, so therefore things like CED, HB and Stayability are DRASTICALLY different than before. For example, if you are used to using CED of 10 or higher for a heifer bull, you now have to change that number to a 16. It moved 6 basis points. The same for Stayability; the breed average was a 10 and it is now a 16. Because of these changes, the Herd Builder Index (HB) also changed drastically. Breed average last year was 97, it is now 172. Please familiarize yourself with the new breed average EPDs (see p. 33). WHAT HAS NOT CHANGED!?! The bulls! They are the same, they just have a different base. USE OUR STAR SYSTEM, it tells you what we know about both sides of the pedigree. If you are looking for a heifer bull, look for a 4 star bull in the calving box in his tile. Please call KCC if you need more information!! Moving Forward Did you know. There are multiple marketing assistance programs available, both through the Red Angus Assn and through us at Kniebel Cattle Co.? For example, we have several customers who get their heifers pregnancy checked by mid September and we pool the open heifers and feed them out! This turns a culled animal into a much more profitable venture. None of us have enough for a load individually, but together we can make it work. We also feed calves for customers or help them place calves in a trusted feedyard that will get the data on their calves. There are many options to talk about, and we would love to visit with you about them and see if one is a good fit for your operation. As China opens up, there might be opportunity for sourced calves again. This is different from the past in one very important way...they HAVE to be tagged before they leave home, there is no backtracking. The Red Angus tag program is very easy to use and a cheap and easy way to have it all covered. In fact, we will buy a bag of 25 tags for every bull you buy/per calf crop as long as you own him. (If you use them spring and fall you get 2 bags!) & Feedlot for 2018: Both ranches retain ownership. It is something both operations have done for their entire histories (KCC since the 1800s!). Since the 90s, KCC & DRI have been founding stockholders of US Premium Beef. It has been a great outlet for our commercial genetics and those seedstock genetics that don t make the cut. It s easy to be Ranch # head % Prime % in a Premium Angus Program picky about the bulls that make the sale when they have a valuable alternate use! It also keeps us well grounded in what is important to the industry for feeding genetics and forces us to seek balance when the herd produces both seedstock and finished cattle. This past year, both ranches retained ownership on their non-seedstock calves and the results were stellar. % Choice and above % YG 4s Avg. Age at Slaughter DRI 213 8.9% 78% 98.1% 2.8% 13-14 mos KCC 359 9.5% 73% 96.3% 5.9% 13-14 mos Coming in the Future: More bulls, more SimAngus (Red & Black) and expanded embryo transfer. We have been cautiously expanding our numbers of bulls through the years as we ve seen greater demand from our customers. DRI has been using ET for a couple of years now and will be bringing almost 2x the bulls next year as in the past. KCC is considering adding ET in the future. Regardless, BOTH operations will insist on only the best, PROVEN donor dams. DRI runs their ET program right with the commercial cow herd, so the donor must have calved at the very beginning of the season if she s going to work. She also must have at least 3 calves on the ground and be showing us top production and a truly functional phenotype with good feet and legs, natural fertility, sound udder, etc. Only then do we look at pedigree & EPDs. It s working too; this spring we calved 85% of last year s transfer and this year s donors performed beautifully. Our ET provider (Cross Country Genetics) was concerned our flush might not be very successful because our donors weren t fat; they looked like working cows (most ET programs rely on lots of feed). Low & behold, these donors, nursing big calves, grazing native range and certainly not fat AVERAGED 17 TRANSFERABLE EMBRYOS EACH. That s innate fertility and it will be the foundation that brings all of us greater CERTAINTY. Also coming next year are more SimAngus. DRI will have more F1 black SimAngus and in an exciting new development, KCC will have it s first ever F1 Red SimAngus bulls! We know cross-breeding brings some real benefits to the table. You can expect maternal benefits in terms of fertility & longevity along with pounds of calf production & improved calf health. We re excited for you to see what we bring in 2019! 19

Bull Development Our Philosophy Fit or Fat? The answer has more implications than you might think. All of us in the ranching community have done a done a fabulous job of changing cattle genetics the last 30 years. We have increased production and efficiency while decreasing inputs; an amazing feat and one we ll have to continue fine tuning if we re going to feed 9 billion people in the future. There are a few pitfalls to this advancement in production however, and they have to do with longevity of a replacement animal...both cows AND bulls. A feedlot animal can be pushed to their genetic potential but doing so with bulls and replacement heifers can have serious negative effects on productivity and especially longevity. Extreme performance comes with a price. Cattle lay down fat everywhere, not just under the skin. That includes the scrotum of a bull. So what? Well, when July rolls around and that insulating scrotal fat decreases your bull s ability to cool his testicles, then his fertility plummets. There may be a few extra open cows show up in the fall and you really have no explanation. Was it the drought and heat? Mineral program? Grass quality? We have all kinds of suspects but how many times do you blame a fat bull? It is a real problem and one whose effects are surely underestimated. Exercise is another important consideration.. Your bull needs to chase cows over big, rugged pastures. If his only training has been waddling to the feed bunk, you are. Well, you get the drift. And speaking of those rugged, rocky hills, if your bull has some sub-clinical damage to his feet from a high grain ration (think low level founder), then he may get too sore to go the extra mile. There are all sorts of low level, subclinical problems that come from overfeeding a bull, and you can t necessarily look at him and see them. But if he causes you a couple more open cows, that s huge. Be picky about how your bull is developed, ask questions. And a reminder; never overfeed your bull when you get him home! When we develop rations for bulls we try to think of the rumen health first, then feet and legs, while still feeding enough to see differences in genetic expression. A ration that is high roughage, has very little nonstructural carbohydrates (like grain) and more of the slowly digestible products that maintain a healthier ph in the rumen is what we re after. Remember, there are 2 types of bugs in the rumen that handle digestion: one type digests grains and the other roughages. They do not like to live in the same ph level. The higher acidity of a grain ration for long periods, causes spilling over of acids and bacteria from the rumen into the bloodstream and leads to damage such as liver abscesses, leaky rumen walls, and founder. When we take a 3-4 week long, 5 ration step-up in the feedyard to bring new cattle up to a top ration, it is not because they won t eat the top high grain ration to start with.it is because we are taking time to let the rumen organisms change from being mostly roughage digesters to predominately grain digesters. If you take them too quickly you can cause stomach upsets, diarrhea, the cattle go off feed and maybe have bloating issues. If not corrected, you get foundered animals too. Bulls should never be fed like a terminal feedlot animal. Never. Your bull needs to chase cows over rugged pasture. If his only training has been waddling to a feed bunk, you (and your cows) are in trouble. It truly is a balancing act, and bulls should never be fed like a terminal feedlot animal. The average backfat of our finished steers going to USPB this spring was.50 -.60 and we graded 99% choice and higher. The average backfat of the bulls at ultrasound scanning is.17 -.20 backfat. We ve seen plenty of bulls with finished levels of backfat at scanning time around the country. Pay attention to the fat cover on the bulls you purchase and make sure you are not buying a problem. Having said all that, fat at the right place & time is very important. In feedlot cattle, we re after marbling and it s full expression. As you all know, we still have a large commercial herd, and finish out of all our calves that are not kept as replacement heifers. We have put great emphasis on good carcass traits, but not at the expense of good females, since we need both. After 20 years of crafting our own bulls, KCC is very proud to say that 75% of this years bull offering is in the top 1/3 of the breed for carcass traits. A full 33% of them are in the top 10%!! We are continuing to collect carcass data and save replacement females from our own bulls so we have confidence in the data and the genetics we offer. 31

60 KCC & DRI Commercial Bred Heifers KCC and DRI are pleased to offer 60 bred heifers to calve next spring. They represent the top of our spring born heifer calves. To start with, we kept heifers that were neither too big nor too small, were born in the 1st 1/2 of the season, had good temperaments, were good performers, and were structurally correct, etc. From that elite group, we selected heifers from the best cows. When all was said and done, we had less than 1/2 the heifers left. We are offering you 1/2 of the best of the best! These are NOT put together heifers but rather the top of our herd with generations of AI, tough selection and proven performance on the range and the rail. Heifers are bred to calving ease Black Angus (DRI) and Red Angus (KCC). The heifers have all their shots, have been dewormed, Bangs vaccinated & tested PI negative. Complete information on each heifer will be available on a supplement sheet online and at the sale. Videos of each lot will be online before the sale too. Heifers will sell in lots of 3 to 5. They will be penned at the sale, but a video presentation will run for each lot in the ring. AGAIN THIS YEAR: THERE WILL BE A BASE BID ON ALL HEIFERS. We have always had a policy of honesty in all dealings. We remain in an extended drought that saw us downsize our herd significantly. We have hopes for improvement next year, thus, we are setting a reasonable floor because they have great value to us. These are heart of our herd heifers. There are A LOT of heifers out there again this fall. As belts tighten, known genetics become all the more valuable. We continue to offer our BEST, KNOWN, PROVEN GENETICS that keeps your foundation solid. Remember; Certainty! Therefore, the base bid on bred heifers will be $1800. Ah, summer! But summer turns to fall and fall to winter. And some winters have brought blizzards! So... Remember - We offer calve-out service with our exclusive L I VE CA L F G UA R A N T E E! See p. 5 for pricing information & compete details. 32

A Word About Cattle Feeding It s no secret that both operations are big believers in retained ownership of quality cattle. After all, if you re going to go to the trouble of stacking high-quality genetics and handling and vaccinating your cattle properly, why not reap the benefits? If you re willing to go one step further and identify those animals, the story gets even better. You need to know how your own cattle perform, even if you never anticipate retaining ownership (see our data on page 19). As seen below, money will be made on changing markets and grid premiums. Therefore, retained ownership will happen more with grid proven cattle. Let s take a look: Value of 550 lb calf @ 1.80 on Oct. 1: $990.00 Avg. feeding costs with $.70 cost of gain (700 lbs ) $490 Freight & Interest (calf) $30 Death loss (ours is lower, but we ll use 2%) $20 Total costs: $1530.00 Breakeven price for May marketing $1.22 Oct. 1 Pricing through USPB for April $123.00 With premiums WE normally garner, it s still a winner WITH OUR FEEDING HISTORY. We feel the market is oversold and things will be better this spring.aren't we optimistic?! KCC & DRI fall cattle on feed at KCC Understanding & Interpreting In general, the AAA has set things up so that the higher the number, the better it is. In other words, for calving ease direct (CED), a bull with a 9 would calve easier than a bull with a 2. A higher marbling EPD means more marbling and so forth. However, please be careful not to think that bigger is always better. A bull with an outrageously high $Beef value may give you huge frame scores and hard doing cows. Higher milk values could lead in some instances to udder problems and cows that milk themselves down too much and therefore have trouble rebreeding. The other thing to consider is how much data is behind the numbers the Association generates. We re excited about the $EN value index which attempts to get a handle on more efficient cows. However, this the Association uses Milk EPD and mature size only to calculate this number. This misses those really efficient outliers (and some hard-doing ones too!). The Red Angus Association is the only association that builds from Total Herd Reporting (THR). THR uses data from the entire calf crop - not just the calves that were good enough to register. The biggest benefit of THR is the elimination of reporting bias from data used to calculate EPDs. Perhaps even more significant is the overestimate of performance of sires whose poorer performing calves are not reported. This next thought cannot be stressed too much. YOU CAN NOT COMPARE EPD S ACROSS BREEDS!!!! Black Angus breeders consider BW +2.0 and below to be suitable for use on heifers, while Red Angus breeders will usually want a negative BW EPD. Having said that, here are the averages for parent sires in the AAA and RAA as of September of the current year: Do NOT compare EPDs across breeds. They are very different!!! Understanding & Interpreting the Performance BW Bull s birth weight as adjusted by the American Angus Association or Red Angus Association. WW Bull s weaning weight adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 205 days YW Bull s yearling weight adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 365 days Scrotal Bulls scrotal circumference in centimeters adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 365 days of age (1 year) Performance (Expected Progeny Differences) CED- Calving Ease Direct is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which an sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. BW-Expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny when compared to the progeny of an average bull in the breed. WW & YW-Expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning/yearling growth to his progeny compared to the progeny of an average bull in the breed. Milk-Also called Weaning Wt, is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. In other words, it is that part of WW attributed to mi and mothering ability. It is compared to daughters of an average bull in the breed. Scrotal-Expressed in centimeters, it is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to the progeny of an average sire in the breed. Available for BLACK ANGUS ONLY. Stayability-The expected difference in probability of daughters staying in the herd at least 6 years. Since cows are usually only culled for being open before the age of 6, the EPD is primarily a measure of sustained fertility in female offspring. Available for RED ANGUS ONLY. (Expected Progeny Differences) CW- weight, expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling-expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades. REA-expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. BF or FT expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. YG-predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score, and is expressed in USDA Yield Grade units Black Angus ONLY $ Value Indexes Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). $Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. Includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Red Angus ONLY Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) - predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. Red Angus HPG EPD offers more than an indicator trait, it selects for producers desired response: pregnant heifers. The ME EPD predicts differences in energy requirements of mature daughters of an individual and is expressed in Mega-calories per month. Differences in Maintenance Energy requirements can easily translate into differences in feed required to maintain body weight. While higher milking, higher growth (larger mature size) cattle typically have higher maintenance requirements, there are many Red Angus sire choices that defy these antagonisms - actually combining positive revenue traits (Growth and Milk) with negative Expense Traits (ME). FOR THIS INDEX, THE LOWER THE NUMBER, THE BETTER! HB & GM Herd builder and grid master are both indexes designed with the idea that you are using Red Angus bulls on half-blood Simmental cows. This does not apply to many people, but you get the basis behind it now. The Herdbuilder is for choosing replacement females first and marketing the culls on a grid. It puts strong emphasis on Stay, HPG and CE, with slight amount on marbling, YG and growth. The Gridmaster is for marketing on the grid only, using marbling, YG and growth. We used to get a lot of black Angus info from the Canadian Angus Assc, as reds and blacks are together. Since 2015 that has not been possible, so anything with black angus in the background has a zero number and has to accumulate data to move that index. We have several AI sires that we used that are from upbreeding programs and have black one generation back. Their numbers show it. They will change as more data is submitted, but we only used ones we feel were really worthwhile! Simmental ONLY All Purpose Index (API)- Evaluates sire for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Index units are in dollars per cow exposed. Terminal Index (TI)- Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Index units are in dollars per cow exposed. 30 34
