Southland Dog Training Club MARCH 2013 Newsletter President s Report This is going to be my last President s report and I d like to say is it s been interesting! I ve been president for just over two and a half years now and I think I ve achieved one of the things that the committee two and half years ago committed to doing creating some consistency following a period of considerable turmoil and turnover. I d like to think whilst president I have enabled anyone and everyone in the club to have their voice and opinion heard so that those on the committee could truly represent the whole club. The 50th Anniversary show was a real highlight for me, or should I say the significant efforts so many many members at the club put into the fundraising and sponsorship for this event and the club overall. I m afraid to name anyone for fear of missing someone out but you know who you are and what you did! It has also been great to see how committed new members can be to help to run the club and events, and we all need to keep encouraging new members in every aspect of the club. so much about dogs and agility and kept the other dogs in line. Give your furry friends a hug today you ll never know how long you ll have them and how much you ll miss them when they re gone. Caroline Please attend the AGM it is your chance to have your say in who runs the club. Nominate someone to stand on the committee, or let it be known you are happy to stand and get a friend to nominate you. (just make sure you ve paid your membership fee first!!) It doesn t take too much effort to be part of the committee and it gives everyone the chance to participate. Lastly for those of you who didn t know I had my first best friend put to sleep on the 22nd April. I d had Louis for nearly 14 years, he was born on the farm I grew up on in England and cost more to fly over here than my daughter! I miss him terribly, he was my constant shadow, taught me

Anne Cook Seminar Easter Weekend 2013 A big thanks to Joanne Rennell for organising a seminar with Anne over the Easter weekend. Many handlers and dogs attended, in group and/ or individual sessions. Here are a few comments about what they got out of the seminar. Blake with Ryley I learnt how to keep Ryley s attention and drive throughout a complete run. I need to be excited and stay positive and happy with Ryley to keep him motivated. Caroline and Mersey Training once a week if you are competing is not enough and an indoor venue over winter would be a great advantage. Karen and Ella Karen got a lot out of weave pole training, consistent contact training and lead outs and timing. Jan & Fred Having watched Anne and David run their dogs so successfully, I jumped at the opportunity of going to a seminar with Anne. I went to the Friday night informative evening and had my turn both days with Fred, but also stayed all Saturday and Sunday to soak up as much information as I could. One of things I learnt is how important timing is to get a clear round. The biggest thing I learnt is consistency for contact behaviour. I feel that it would benefit all handlers if they insisted on consistent contact behaviour training rather than just having the contact gear set up, but now I have learnt how important contact training is, I will insist on Fred doing the behaviour that I want. Rae, Bounce & Brooke It was my privilege to train under Anne as she is full of knowledge and understanding of dogs. My biggest problem is consistent contacts for both my dogs. Bounce is confused as to what behaviour I want from him as I let him away with different behaviour in competition than in training and I am now paying the price for that. Brooke is more understanding of what is required of her but once again she loses it in competitions. Consistency is the key. Anne worked with me again on start line stays as Brooke has proved to be difficult in the past. I believe we now have some understanding. Another aspect, like most of us, is the correct timing when changing direction to ensure the dog understands exactly what is required of her/him. I would like to see our Club invite Anne to take another seminar next year. Dawn, Dash & Skipper Anne taught me to be more verbal, active and timely in directing my dogs & keeping their attention. She also tightened up my contact criteria and stressed the need for consistency in this when competing as well as in training. Marriage or Relationship? If you want someone who will eat whatever you put in front of him and never say it s not quite as good as his mother s then get a dog. If you want someone always willing to go out, at any hour, for as long and wherever you want... then get a dog. If you want someone who will never touch the remote, doesn t care about football, and can sit next to you as you watch romantic movies get a dog. If you want someone who is content to get on your bed just to warm your feet and whom you can push off if he snores...then get a dog! If you want someone who never criticizes what you do, doesn t care if you are pretty or ugly, fat or thin, young or old, who acts as if every word you say is especially worthy of listening to, and loves you unconditionally, perpetually.....then get a dog. BUT, on the other hand, if you want someone who will never come when you call, ignores you totally when you come home, leaves hair all over the place, walks all over you, runs around all night and only comes home to eat and sleep, and acts as if your entire existence is solely to ensure his happiness...then get a cat. You thought I was gonna say... marry a man, didn t you? Run like you give a shit! A pertinent comment heard from the sidelines...
