1 NICK CULLEN INTERIM DIRECTOR 3951 Fruitvale Avenue Bakersfield, CA 93308 (661) 868-7100 February 5, 2015 ANIMAL SERVICES MONTHLY REPORT FOR JANUARY 2015 Program Highlights Volunteers donated approximately 1294.25 hours in January in the areas of animal care (including puppies, cats, general kennels and horses), administration needs, grooming, cleaning, photography, dishes and linens, and several special events. There were 83 active volunteers in January. Of the 1294.25 original hours, 920.75 hours were completed by regular KCAS volunteers, 30 hours were completed by one-day volunteers, 12 hours were completed by employment preparation volunteers, 37.50 hours were completed by regional occupational center volunteers (ROC students from the Kern High School District), and 294 hours were completed by work release volunteers. Total volunteer time equates to 8.1 staff members and the value given back to KCAS by current and new volunteers in all areas is $32,032.69. January was a busy month once again for media contact, inquiries and interviews for the Department. The Marketing & Promotions Associate responded to 26 media inquiries and requests providing information to the media on various topics such as field services including wildlife calls; Your Pet Needs an Extra Set of Paws adoption promotion; a live remote with KBAK29 on monthly and weekly vaccination clinics, showcasing adoptable pets and a football adoption promotion; vaccination clinics; spay/neuter resources, senior pets in shelters, and a feature story on the behind-the-scenes look at the compassionate and caring animal care worker staff at the Department. Of those 26 contacts, 13 resulted in interviews or postings for newspaper, television and radio media outlets via video, newsprint on the news agency websites and papers and, on Facebook pages. The Department hosted its 2 nd Annual Your Team Needs an Extra Set of Paws adoption promotion, in January. The week-long Super Bowl themed adoption event ended with 56 animals finding new forever homes. All dog adoption fees were reduced to just $20 for dogs and $10 for cats. The Department plans to continue this unique promotion next year. The Rescue Team made one trip to Mt. Shasta and two trips to San Francisco during the month of January, resulting in 114 animals finding new forever homes. In addition to the three transports to Northern California, rescue partners saved a grand total of 254 animals in January. Our Foster Program continues to grow and save more lives. 15 new animals entered the foster care program during the month of January. Starting July 1, 2013, the Department implemented its first ever Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program for feral and free-roaming cats, joining thousands of other agencies across the country embracing TNR as the humane method to control the feral and freeroaming cat populations. The program has been extremely successful with 140 cats being spayed or neutered and returned to the areas where they were trapped in January. The total number of cats that have been altered since the beginning of the program is 2692.

KCAS hosted a successful, low-cost vaccination, licensing and microchip clinic in Bakersfield (North Beardsley Park). 92 licenses, 96 Rabies vaccinations, 77 DHPP vaccinations, 9 FVRCP vaccinations, and 67 free microchips were implanted during this vaccination clinic. The Department s new Wednesday evening vaccination, licensing and microchipping clinics at the new Fruitvale Shelter location in Bakersfield continued in January with 161 DHPP vaccinations, 16 FVRCP vaccinations, 140 Rabies vaccinations, 124 licenses and 100 microchips issued during the four Wednesday evening clinics. The Department plans to continue to offer the Wednesday evening clinics on an on-going basis to assist pet owners in keeping their pets healthy and happy. In January, the Department partnered with 4 th District Supervisor David Couch and Paramount Farms to provide spay/neuter surgeries to residents in the Lost Hills area. 28 animals were spayed or neutered during this event. Special thanks to Dr. Willis and his mobile veterinary team from San Joaquin Veterinary Hospital for performing the surgeries. The Department will continue partnering with additional agencies and the Board of Supervisor members to bring spay/neuter services to as many unincorporated residents as possible. KCAS hosted two Sunday adoption events at the PetSmart store, located on Oswell Street in Bakersfield, in January. Staff showcased a number of adoptable dogs during the events and were successfully able to adopt out a total of 6 dogs. We continue to provide free microchips for all pet owners both onsite at all three shelters and at our low-cost clinic locations. We have implanted a total of 7,984 microchips for Kern County residents since the program began on October 23, 2012. The Department s medical team was extremely busy this month performing 70 spays and 60 neuters on site for a total of 130 surgeries performed. 2
