NORCAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB Golden Notes www.norcalgrc.org Elected Officers: President Eileen Oshiro Secretary/ Treasurer Wendy Silveira 1425 Essex Wy San Jose, CA 95117 VP Performance Terry Southard VP Breed Jeanetta Gulden VP Field Debbie Tandoc Director Nancy Kelly Director Linda Lang Standing Officials Financial Secretary Patty Simmons Membership Secretary Suzanne Bria DECEMBER 2010 From GRCA Western Director Leslie Blythe Greetings from Wyoming! I trust you're enjoying the Holiday Season, as we head into the final two weeks of December. I still haven't figured out where 2010 went -- seems like just yesterday we were enjoying Colorful Colorado at the 2010 National. And now, it's nearly 2011. As a recently appointed GRCA board member (to complete Bev Brown's unexpired term when she moved into the Western VP position), I'm excited for the opportunity to serve this organization and its membership, and look forward to working with you and your club. The coming year offers both opportunities and challenges for the GRCA and its membership. Such issues as legislation that affects the sport of purebred dogs and health concerns in the breed are important for the organization to address - so we may continue to enjoy our remarkable Goldens for many generations to come. Golden Retrievers are many things to many people - and I am committed to doing my part to ensure Goldens remain outstanding family companions, sporting dogs, athletes and competitors. This involves open and honest communications about the breed, health issues and breeding programs; drawing upon the expertise and knowledge of long-time members and breeders; mentoring "newbies"; and encouraging those involved with the breed to join the GRCA. And finally, the GRCA Board meets monthly, either by conference calls or meetings. If you have topics that you'd like me to forward to the Board, my email address is: LeslieGRCAWesternDirector@gmail.com. I'm also available to discuss issues or answer questions you might have by phone, 307.235.2920 or 307.259.6904. GOLDEN NOTES Page 2 Editor s Bark Argus Rise of the Phoenix, CD, AX, AXJ Dogs are not our whole lives but they make our lives whole Roger Caras January marks the beginning of a new year and unbeknownst to many, it is also my birthday month. This year for my birthday wish, I asked my friends and family on Facebook to make a $10 contribution to the Zeke Fund for canine cancer research. Research in the cause, diagnosis, treatment, and cure of various canine diseases is vital in keeping our Golden breed healthy and prosperous. Recently NORCAL GRC received an update from the Golden Retriever Foundation and I wanted to share it with all club members. The STAND TOGETHER CHALLENGE was a great success! We are very thankful to everyone who contributed to this fund raising project and feel confident that you will all be pleased that your donations continue to support rescue, research, and education for our wonderful breed. All contributions, big and small, are greatly appreciated! We would like to acknowledge our core donors (excluding any who asked to remain anonymous) and the clubs and organizations who worked to bring in sizable donations for this project. A special thank you to: CORE DONORS: Estate of Warren Culbertson Rex Gibson Judy Rasmuson Sally Sheridan Leon and Jan Thompson Joy and Alfred Viola Anonymous Marilyn Congleton Walt and Marilyn Gearhart Rhonda Hovan Alan and Deb Hubbard Pam Kennedy Betty White Ludden Brenda and Bob Rich Charles Rogers, MD Peter and Barbara Zelechoski CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS: SmokeTree Goldens, Silent Auction Cuyahoga Valley GRC (17 clubs met the matching challenge!) GOLDEN NOTES Page 3 NORCAL GRC Ways and Means The year 2011 will be the year for escrip!!!!! So watch out those of you STILL not on. I did xmas shopping at Orvis, got exactly what I wanted & NORCAL got a few bucks. As Orvis is signed up with escrip. Very easy to do just go to escrip.com open up & give our group ID # 500007232. When you shop at DOGGONE GOOD for those great doggie goods be sure to click on NORCAL as we do get a certain % from sales. Our final # for 2010 is low but I m hoping with the holidays the sales will be up. Thank you, the shoppers of NORCAL. Yes, we are still looking into seminars for YOU but those are a lot of work for Terry & I. More later. Have a MERRY Holiday season, Mary Ann Graziano NORCAL GRC Agility Trial Update Member s Brags Congratulations to Sport and Christine Hsu! The Norcal Agility Trial on Nov. 13 & 14 was a huge success. I would like to thank my tireless helpers for the weekend, members were Linda and Dan Tidwell, LindseyCuff, Ed and Edwina Ryska, Letty Hall, Christine Hsu, and one non-member and good friend, Marion Bashista, without all of them it could not have happened. GOLDEN NOTES Page 5 Pleas join in welcoming two new members to our club. Patricia Kostakis, sponsored by Brenda Radcliff, lives in Roseville and has one golden, Ryder (Ryder Dodger Gold RN CGC). Patty has attended and participated in our specialties, flyer days, and hunt tests, and donated items to our garage sale. Patty hopes to be ready to enter Ryder in our 2011 hunt test. Sarah Wright, sponsored by Suzanne Bria, lives in Bolinas and currently has one golden of her own breeding, Bella (Flaxen Fields Bella CCA) who is by Linda Lang's Tyler out of Sarah's Tallulah. Pups from Bella's first litter (by Hyegold Midsumr Knights Dream) have earned titles in tracking and are AKC pointed. Sarah has volunteered to help at workshops and specialties as well as the CCA. Both Patty and Sarah bring a spirit of enthusiasm and a willingness to pitch in-- and have already contributed to our club. Con t from Editor s Bark (page 2) Palo Verde GRC of Tucson Wheatland GRC of Wichita The GRF has been busy with several new projects, both in the works and already approved. We are hoping to get our website updated with an area to view the projects we are currently funding. I want to again remind everyone that research projects need both funding and sample collections. While some projects need actual tissue and blood samples for specific disorders, we can all contribute to both current and future projects by getting samples to both OFA, CHIC and the BROAD Institute for storage and usage as needed. As mentioned in past updates for the GRF, Mike Lappin is no longer on the board but we are very happy that he will continue on with the GRF as our DNA Coordinator, heading up the annual blood collections at the National Specialties and helping any club that would like to host a blood collection clinic for this purpose. In fact, Mike just did a "Mass collection clinic" yesterday, in conjunction with the Yankee health clinic, collecting 62 samples which will be shipped to OFA (CHIC) and The Broad Institute. These samples are used for both current and future research projects with the benefit of having DNA readily at hand instead of needing to wait until people volunteer to send samples on affected dogs once the project is approved. Please contact Mike for information on hosting a clinic or how to contribute to these projects at: Michael A Lappin, DVM anidoc@intercape.com Phone: 508-759-4522 Cell: 617-852-5397 Fax: 508-915-4249 Concerning the very serious issue of Pigmentary Uveitis, we want Golden fanciers to know this is a topic of grave concern and discussion with the GRF. The GRF is aware that there will be grant requests for PU studies soon. We eagerly await receiving those grant requests and will act on them as quickly as possible. We hope to be able to share progress concerning this topic with everyone soon. Sincerely, Jennifer Krawsczyn, GRF Secretary, on behalf of the GRF Board, Dave Kinghorn, President Nancy Talbott, VP Linda Johnson, Treasurer
