The OCOD Training Center is building a reputation of being a great place to compete and learn and we are often told that we have one of the best training facilities in Florida. We couldn t do it without dedicated members who volunteer their time to keep it running. Thank you. CGC Rules, Regulations, Pass / Fail Presentation by Renee Johnson President s Message, IMPORTANT REMINDER Speaking of volunteering, to pay the working member price (1/2 the full price) to attend the Christmas banquet, you must work at least 5 hours to directly help the club. Teaching or assisting classes, cleaning, set up for seminars almost anything counts. However, you must document your 5 hours (or more) in the black binder on the back wall in the TC. We ll use the binder to determine who has worked. And it is YOUR responsibility to make sure your information is correctly recorded. I want to thank those who attend our monthly meetings to participate in the discussions, hear announcements first hand, applaud the accomplishments of fellow members and listen to the speakers. I realize not everyone is able to attend, but I appreciate those of you who do. I m sure we are all dreaming of cooler weather and so are our dogs. Get ready to be doing more outside activities with your 4 legged pals in just a few weeks. Respectfully submitted, Pat Mozden

Page 5 September 2016 Chatter-Barks New feature in Chatterbarks called the Member Profile by Pat Mozden We are certainly happy to be training indoors but the one thing I miss about the parking lot is that since we all trained at the same time; we got to know each other. With classes now held day and night, several days a week, that is much more difficult to accomplish and I was looking for a way to help bridge that gap. I decided to start a new feature in Chatterbarks called the Member Profile. Every month or two I will write a short article about one or two of our members focusing on their dog training experiences. I know this is risky as with nearly 200 members I will never get to everyone and everyone will have a favorite person they feel should be featured. Despite those drawbacks, I m going to give this a try. I m starting with those who have earned an OTCH. I put those names in a basket and picked out one for this month. It was Joyce Swegle. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By my count, Joyce has owned at least 12 dogs and trained most of them to compete in companion events. Although we now associate Joyce with Golden Retrievers, her first dog, Brix, was a German shepherd who earned his CD when Joyce was just 15. When marriage and children came along so did more dogs. In 1995, Turner joined the family, became her first Champion, first UD and went to Westminster in 2002 and at the age of 11 he earned his RN. Garrett was her first UDX and also her first agility dog. Plus Garrett showed in Rally when it was first approved by AKC. Then there was Dylan, Joyce s heart dog. OTCH Magik Softwind Foreverin Fun UDX4 RE. He loved to learn, loved to train, and was just fun. He earned his CD, CDX and UD in 1 year and a year later earned his UD in one weekend. He received several Front and Finish awards and is in the in the Golden Retriever Club of America Obedience Hall of Fame. In agility, he was ranked 5 th in Goldens nationwide when he had to be retired for health reasons. Ziggy was born in 2003. He didn t enjoy showing in obedience but following a tracking seminar held by OCOD with Diane and Dutch Schultz they discovered tracking and he loved it as well as agility. Henry (2004) was her first OM and loved all training except tracking. He was loved by everyone who knew him. Micha came along in 2006 also loved tracking and agility and obedience training. Alexander is the dog she is currently showing. He loves to train in everything. He earned his TD at 13 months old and he placed 2 nd in Utility at the AKC Obedience Classic in 2014. (Continued on page 6)

Page 6 September 2016 Chatter-Barks Joyce is also currently training Phineas and Benjamin in Obedience and Tracking. With the variety of sports Joyce has worked in, Joyce is a total dog trainer, that is, her dogs are trained to do everything. Over the years, Joyce has trained at several Central Florida facilities and taken seminars and private lessons and has also taught obedience. Currently, Joyce teaches Utility and Versatility for OCOD and loves helping other handlers achieve their goals. Joyce says, dogs are like kids, each one is different and what works with one may not be the best for another. Be open to different ideas and methods. Also, make training fun for you and your dog. A dog that is having fun is a joy to watch. Turner - Ch.
