Between the Bookends: Barbara Kingsolver s eighth work of fiction, Flight Behavior, (Large Print) takes place in southern Appalachia and is centered around one woman s struggle to understand herself, her desire to move beyond her stifling circumstances, and the life changing effects on her and her surroundings with the discovery of hordes of Monarch Butterflies coming to rest in the forests above her hometown of Feathertown, Tennessee. My Beloved World by Sonia Sotomayor is a memoir of one of our current Associates of the Supreme Court. She tells us about her difficult childhood; but supported by a resilient family, she pursues her Princeton college degree and Yale law school, graduating with honors. Mann Missive Buckley Kitchen Dish Machine You Made It Happen! 115 donors have contributed or committed gifts totaling $32,420 to the $36,000 needed to purchase and install a new energyefficient and people-friendly dish machine in our kitchen. THANK YOU! We have committed to it and expect it to be installed next week. Stop by and see it sometime. And, enjoy your sparkling table service. You continue to make Mayflower top-flight and a gift to all who live here. Energy Use Help! We have had lower costs for gas and electricity use over the last 18 months because, even though rates have increased a bunch, our utilization has remained low. That has been helped by mild weather during that period. However, we are now in the hot and humid period of the year the corn s gotta grow! Please be aware of your home thermostat setting and use of lights at home and in Mayflower common spaces. Every little bit helps. Computers, Balance, Swimming Now, Watch for Senior Driving Training. There is a good course out there to assist seniors drive more safely. Anne Sunday, Mayflower s Independent Living Activities Coordinator, is making arrangements. Watch for an announcement. Luau.40 Years of Them. Our Food Service staff did us proud again last week as they presented two nights of outstanding foods and Hawaiian-themed décor in the Buckley Dining Room. Even the feral ( wild ) pig smoked and slow-roasted was tender and tasty. I had seconds on the mango chicken and coconut shrimp. Aren t we fortunate?! It is a great way to meet-and-greet and enjoy an extravagant, but inexpensive, night out, right here on campus. What s Next? Watch for Information About Mayflower s Own State Fair. You won t want to miss this one-of-a-kind event in Grinnell again, right here on campus. Tell Your Friends and Family About Harwich Terrace Living. As the result of recent transitions, Mayflower has available four attractive Harwich Terrace homes with a possible fifth one being considered by its current occupant. Check our website (Just search Mayflower Grinnell ), drop me a message, or give me a call (641-236-6151). Senior Living and Healthcare. The July/ August, 2013 edition of Senior Living Executive cited a recent Merrill Lynch/Age Wave study that found Adults, age 45 and older, are seven times more likely to prioritize achieving peace of mind over accumulating wealth (88% and 12%, respectively) in their retirement plans. They share a strong view that retirement is not an end but a beginning, an opportunity for reinvention. What are older adults peace-of-mind concerns? Cost of health care: 37%. Serious health problems: 72%. Being a burden on family: 60%. Outliving assets: 47%. With a 63-year history of providing all these things without a burden on family and without the prospect of being asked to move out when funds are depleted, Mayflower is the best elixir for these concerns! We served our first night of Mayflower Luaus in 1973. In 1989, we expanded to two nights to accommodate the large number of diners.
