1 NICK CULLEN INTERIM DIRECTOR 3951 Fruitvale Avenue Bakersfield, CA 93308 (661) 868-7100 March 5, 2015 ANIMAL SERVICES MONTHLY REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 2015 Program Highlights Volunteers donated approximately 1351.25 hours in February in the areas of animal care (including puppies, cats, general kennels and horses), administration needs, grooming, cleaning, photography, dishes and linens, and several special events. There were 95 active volunteers in February. Of the 1351.25 original hours, 752.75 hours were completed by regular KCAS volunteers, 40.50 hours were completed by one-day volunteers, 52.75 hours were completed by employment preparation volunteers, 129.50 hours were completed by regional occupational center volunteers (ROC students from the Kern High School District), and 375.75 hours were completed by work release volunteers. Total volunteer time equates to 8.5 staff members and the value given back to KCAS by current and new volunteers in all areas is $33,443.44. February was a busy month once again for media contact, inquiries and interviews for the Department. The Marketing & Promotions Associate responded to 32 media inquiries and requests providing information to the media on various topics such as field services including wildlife calls; 2 nd Annual Will You Be Mine adoption promotion;; vaccination clinics; spay/neuter resources, Flight of the Valentines rescue flight, Wings of Rescue flight, World Spay Day event and the department low-income voucher program. Of those 32 contacts, 23 resulted in interviews or postings for newspaper, television and radio media outlets via video, newsprint on the news agency websites and papers and, on Facebook pages. The Department hosted its 2 nd Will You Be Mine adoption promotion, in February, which ran from February 13 th through February 14 th. All dog adoption fees were reduced to just $20 and all cat adoption fees were reduced to just $10. A total of 42 animals were adopted during this weekend event. The Rescue Team made one trip to Northern California during the month of February, resulting in 30 animals finding new forever homes. The Rescue Team and the medical team worked tirelessly to ensure that an additional 115 dogs and 12 cats were able to fly to new homes in Washington three times and New York one time. The total animals saved by the rescue team in February were 157. Rescue partners saved an additional 78 animals, for a grand total of 235 animals saved in February. Our Foster Program continues to grow and save more lives. 12 new animals entered the foster care program during the month of February. Starting July 1, 2013, the Department implemented its first ever Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program for feral and free-roaming cats, joining thousands of other agencies across the country embracing TNR as the humane method to control the feral and freeroaming cat populations. The program has been extremely successful with 112 cats being spayed or neutered and returned to the areas where they were trapped in February. The total number of cats that have been altered since the beginning of the program is 2,804.

2 KCAS hosted three successful, low-cost vaccination, licensing and microchip clinics in Bakersfield (Rexland Acres Park) and Mojave (Mojave East Park). 183 licenses, 156 Rabies vaccinations, 130 DHPP vaccinations, 3 FVRCP vaccinations, and 104 free microchips were implanted during this vaccination clinic. The Department s new Wednesday evening vaccination, licensing and microchipping clinics at the new Fruitvale Shelter location in Bakersfield continued in February with 208 DHPP vaccinations, 23 FVRCP vaccinations, 168 Rabies vaccinations, 177 licenses and 98 microchips issued during the four Wednesday evening clinics. The Department plans to continue to offer the Wednesday evening clinics on an on-going basis to assist pet owners in keeping their pets healthy and happy. In February, the Department partnered with 2 nd District Supervisor Zack Scrivner to provide spay/neuter surgeries to residents in the Mojave area. 30 animals were spayed or neutered during this event. Special thanks to Dr. Hyman for performing the surgeries. In addition to the spay/neuter clinic held that day, the Department also provided low-cost vaccinations and other services to the Mojave area. 24 Rabies vaccinations, 29 DHPP vaccinations, 9, FVRCP vaccinations, 46 licenses and 43 microchips were administered at this clinic. The Department will continue partnering with additional agencies and the Board of Supervisor members to bring spay/neuter services to as many unincorporated residents as possible. Kern County Animal Services participated in World Spay Day 2015. World Spay Day is an annual campaign of The Humane Society of the United States and helps shine a spotlight on spaying and neutering companion animals as a way to save the lives of pets and feral/community cats. The Department began offering lower-income spay/neuter vouchers at all three shelters (Bakersfield, Lake Isabella and Mojave) as well as the Ridgecrest City shelter during each day that the shelters are open during normal business hours. The idea was to ensure that everyone that wanted to have access to spay/neuter services for their pets would have that access. In addition, lower-income vouchers were offered for $10 rather than the normal $20 on World Spay Day to encourage more pet owners to take advantage of this great program. The program was a huge success with 136 vouchers issued (27 male dogs, 74 female dogs, 19 male cats and 16 cats) to pet owners just on World Spay Day. The total number of vouchers issued during the month of February, thanks in part to the increased access to the vouchers, was 296 (94 male dogs, 136 female dogs, 31 male cats and 35 female cats). The Department looks forward to continuing to bring spay/neuter services to unincorporated residents and their pets. KCAS hosted 5 off-site adoption events in February at the PetSmart store, located on Oswell Street in Bakersfield. Staff showcased a number of adoptable dogs during the 5 events and was successfully able to adopt out a total of 20 dogs. We continue to provide free microchips for all pet owners both onsite at all three shelters and at our low-cost clinic locations. We have implanted a total of 8,272 microchips for Kern County residents since the program began on October 23, 2012. The Department s medical team was extremely busy this month performing 55 spays and 55 neuters on site for a total of 110 surgeries performed.
