May/June 2017 Newsletter HAPPY SUMMER!!!! A Message From The President With what we have seen so far, it s going to be a long and very hot summer season. That is why we need to turn our thoughts to our dogs in this very hot environment. Dog pads on hot concrete can blister, peel and easily get infected. The old timers test was to remove one of your shoes and place on the surface. If it s too hot for your foot, then the dog does not need to walk on it either. Dogs left in a hot car can die!!!!!! There is a great article on the Humane Society s web site: www.humanesocietysav.org How to help unattended pets in hot cars This is well worth reading and heeding the advice. There is not a law in Georgia that protects Good Samaritans if they damage the car to rescue the animal. Canine Flu We are being hit by a new and apparently very virulent strain of Canine Influenza We have all heard of the aftermath of the Perry Shows. Best advice is to contact your own veterinarian and jointly decide what is best for your dog(s) It is highly likely that boarding and grooming facilities may soon require that dogs be vaccinated for the Canine Flu prior to boarding or grooming the animal. Have a safe and happy summer. -Gigi NEXT MEETING Monday, June 26 6:00pm-Dinner 7:00pm-Meeting Carey Hilliard s Restaurant 11111 Abercorn Street Savannah, Georgia 31419 Meetings are held the fourth Monday of every month SKC Officers President Gigi Devitt Vice President Rachel Shatz Secretary Vickie Marriott Treasurer Jackie Tatum Board Members Eduardo Rivas Susan Walls Becky Smith Jennifer Garner Marcie Bassett
Special Recognition A special congratulations to Jackie Tatum for being recognized on the cover of Pooler Magazine for her accomplishments with Hospice Savannah s Pet Peace of Mind. It takes a wonderful, compassionate person to be able to do what she does, therefore, we at the SKC are very proud of her. Pet Peace of Mind was started in 2003, to assist families and pet during a person s final stages of life. We do anything we can to help the family take care of the patient s pets, which they usually consider a member of the family. That includes taking pets to the vet, getting them groomed, taking them for walks and keeping them stocked with food. Hospice patients want to know that their family is taken care of and that includes their pets. - Jackie Wishing Everyone A Safe, Cool, and Happy Summer! If you would like to read the entire article, I have attached it with the newsletter. 2
