Happy Fall to each of you and your canine counterparts. I can t help but feel grateful for the many club members who have stepped up this year in so many ways. Here are a few of the ways that come to mind. President s Message Kidwell for co-teaching the scentwork class quite successfully -- I was there for the final test and was sincerely impressed with the progress the dogs and handlers made in a few short weeks. Dog Daze is a publication of All Breed Obedience Club Inc., a non- profit obedience club serving San Diego County. Okay, I have to stop and say that I couldn t help thinking about Scotty Maloney as I wrote this -- she coordinated our involvement in both Pay and Plays with passion. I do miss her as I know many of you do. Sigh. We provided a booth and agility ring at the City of San Diego s Dog Dayz of Summer event at Fiesta Island, and we are doing much the same at the October 14 Howloween Dog Costume Contest at Harry Griffen park benefiting Canine Corners Dog Park. Thank you, Audrey Austin, for coordinating this one! Greg Coler offered our first Rally class in quite some time. It was more than full and really well done. Thank you Greg! We have recently added three new classes to our offering: Parkour, AKC Canine Scentwork, and combined CGC / novice tricks. The CGC / novice tricks class includes testing for AKC trick titles. There has been enthusiastic interest in all three of these activities. Thanks to Training Coordinator Louisa Golden for her interest in and openness to new dog sports and for teaching and testing the new tricks component. Audrey Austin also helped with the testing. I want to offer a lively round of applause to Joy Gilmore and Kelly 2 And many thanks to Kelly Kidwell for teaching our first Parkour class. I think this sport has the potential to broaden our horizon in terms of the types of members we attract. It seems to be a sport that will attract people who don t have an interest in competing in the other disciplines. On the new location front, JoAnne Griffin and I attended a meeting in La Mesa that addressed re-purposing the golf course and surrounding areas near MacArthur park. They are definitely planning a fenced dog park, and may or may not be open to a fenced dog training area. The challenge is getting enough La Mesa residents to speak up to say this is what they want. That, plus it can be frustrating to explain successfully the difference between a dog play park and a dog training area. It is second nature to us, but quite perplexing to those who haven t trained dogs. Some have asked but isn t that why we have dog parks? after I think I ve explained the difference beautifully. Happy Holidays, and I hope I get to see you at the ABOCI holiday party on December 1st at my home. Karen Anderson President 858.531.5230

Dog Dayz of Summer, Fiesta Island, August 26, 2017 This was an inaugural event, the brainchild of San Diego City Council Member Lorie Zapf's office. She is a dog lover and seems to recognize the prevalence of pet dogs in San Diego. There were booths for vendors, rescue groups, and various clubs and dog placement organizations. Lorie Zapf's team was extremely pleased with the turnout from the public and exhibitors; they were also quite impressed with and thankful for the participation of ABOCI and the San Diego County Obedience Club. We used the opportunity to distribute club flyers and answer questions about the club in the hopes of expanding membership. A huge thank you to Bobbie Sevier and Connie Kaplan for bringing their three and two dogs, respectively, to demo agility, tracking, and rally. Lauren Cremascoli set up the rally course on behalf of the San Diego County Obedience Club, ran her dog Brave on the course, and manned their booth. Kathrin Copley stopped by and ran Shadow through the agility course. One of the most surprising and fun things for me was the number of people who wanted to take their dogs onto the agility course and try a few things. We had none of the contact obstacles, really just some backyard agility props I bought online for Sweet Pea's practice. They did jumps, weave poles, the tire, and maybe the chute by guiding their dogs through with treats or just their hands. Bobbie jumped in and gave them tips on how to help their dogs pull it off. She was so good with them and so good with the many demos with her dogs! Connie ran both her dogs on a track laid by our member Gaye Macy (she slept with the cloths and gloves the night beforewhat a good sport you are Gaye!). It was hard to attract people to watch the tracking since we had to do it at about 100 yards from the event, plus they took the sound system down so we couldn't announce it. Lesson learned for next time: Leave the sound system up. The folks that did watch were genuinely surprised and impressed with what the dogs were able to do. Louisa Golden's husband, Charles, and Gaye Macy did a dynamite job of chatting people up as they walked by the booth. They both were MUCH better than I at drawing people over to describe what we do. Charles and my husband John came early to help set up two easy-ups and the agility and rally courses with a tape fence. 3

Dog Dayz of Summer, Fiesta Island, August 26, 2017 (continued) Turns out the ground is pretty hard and I wouldn't have been able to pound the stakes in even with the hammers we brought. They both helped with tear down and packing up my car. I could not have pulled this off without their help. And finally, Audrey Austin and Gloria Laube donated the supplies, such as easy-ups, posts and ribbon for the fence, tracking flags, and a table for the booth. Thanks to both of you. Audrey, I promise to get your stuff back to you very soon. Thank you, thank you, thank you to each of you from the bottom of my heart for giving your time, energy, and skills to make this successful! I believe they will want to do this again next year. The pictures are of: A couple guiding their dog through the weave poles. Lorie Zapf guiding her dog through the weave poles. Our very own Bobbie Sevier giving an impromptu jumping lesson to a few on-lookers. 4

All three dogs performed 15 different tricks each. They all earned their AKC Trick Dog Novice, and Trick Dog Intermediate titles! It was a very happy day for all of us, and the girls had a great time! At the Portuguese Water Dog National Specialty held in September, our Keel was honored to receive a Gold Register of Merit in recognition of her many accomplishments. To receive this medal the dog must have earned at least six titles/awards from at least three different areas of competition. Two of the titles must be PWDCA titles (I.e. water). The dog must also have earned an award plus a title from a fourth area of competition. And, finally, there must be either an additional award or advanced PWDCA Water title. 5 Keel s qualifying awards and titles: are CH: AKC Championship PWDCA: AWD Apprentice Water Dog WWD Working Water Dog CWD Courier Water Dog Obedience: CD Novice CDX Open High In Trial Tracking: TD Tracking Dog TDX Tracking Dog Excellent Although not considered in qualifying for this award, Keel has also been a wonderful mom to three lovely litters. GCH CH OTCH Sporting Field's Quantum Leap, UDX3, OM6, better known by 'Devon', has been entered at a few shows since the last Dog Daze, and I'm delighted to say that he's done rather well: On September 3rd at the German Shepherd Dog Club of San Diego Obedience Trial in Escondido, Devon was High in Trial and High Combined under Judge Betty Ribble! (No photo, as I had to leave early due to extreme heat, which was making me quite ill.) This club was super friendly and did a great job putting on their trial! Howloween Funfest at Harry Griffen Park October 14, 2017 The ABOCI booth and agility ring manned by Eleni, Lonni, Joan and Audrey were a big success at the Howloween Fest. There were more dogs and people in costumes than there were places for. I can t imagine how the judges could pick a winner! Dogs in every get-up you could think up. People as cows, dogs as lions, bees, and hot dogs. A small dog in a tub of fake bubbles, with curlers in her hair caught everyone s attention. I don t know who won, but there certainly were choices. They had a picture booth of bales of straw and vendors of all kinds. You could come home with a bag full of samples. I didn t stay for the raffle, but I hope it was a big success. Geri worked hard all day, organizing, setting up, and generally running around doing everything. She was a star. Our agility ring attracted all sizes of dogs. Weave poles, jumps, tunnel and tire were a challenge to most untrained dogs. They did seem to enjoy it. Lonni and Annie showed how it should be done. Audrey and Zazzy followed to the cheers of the crowd. Eleni with her beautiful black and white Standard Poodle, Major captured the attention of all the crowd. He is such an outstanding dog. The day turned very hot! The poor dressed-up dogs had their tongues hanging out. We stayed as cool as possible under the e-z up. I do believe we were well noticed, and if given the chance, we should do it again. \ 10

Greyhound Rescue Pay and Play Event, Dehesa, December 3, 2017 The Agility Club of San Diego has again invited us to participate in a Pay and Play event benefiting the Greyhound Adoption Center. Because quite a few of you have volunteered, we have agreed to put up an obedience ring and a rally ring. Earlier this year we participated in two Pay and Play events, raising about $245 for Greyhound rescue and getting lots of obedience and rally practice in the process. More details will be announced as the date approaches. Please contact Audrey Austin or Karen Anderson if you would like to volunteer and did not respond to the call for participation email. 11
