Victorian Greyhound Weekly Volume 1 Number 2 October 14, 2016 GRNSW Welcomes Government Decision Written by: Greyhound Racing NSW Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has today welcomed the announcement by the NSW Government to give the greyhound racing industry one final chance and permit racing to continue past 30 June 2017. The decision by the NSW Government recognises that there are many thousands of responsible participants around NSW who are actively involved in the greyhound racing industry either through training, racing or supporting the sport and who love and care for all of their greyhounds. Over the past 18 months, GRNSW has introduced robust and wide-ranging reforms to tackle abhorrent practices head-on, while making significant improvements to animal welfare and to the supervision of the industry. GRNSW has also been determined to rid the sport of people who refuse to abide by the rules of racing and are unwilling to adopt the highest of animal welfare standards. While the NSW Government s decision is welcome, GRNSW and the rest of the greyhound racing industry is under no illusion that this reform agenda needs to continue for the industry to have a future in NSW. GRNSW looks forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure NSW greyhound racing can become a more sustainable and vibrant industry that is adequately supervised and regulated and puts the welfare of the greyhound at the centre of everything it does. Greyhound Racing might have won the battle, but the war is far from over. Given the experience of the past three months, which seems to some like three years, it is not quite time for dancing in the streets yet. The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers have warned, after the announcement this week, on social media, that the ban may not be repealed until February, so it could be another four months before we know what form greyhound racing in NSW will take after the ban is overturned. Time for caution, and considered comments, there is still a long way to go. Editor - 1 -

From the Editor s Desk editor@victoriangreyhoundweekly.com.au Welcome to the second edition of Victorian Greyhound Weekly. monthly review of litters registered in South Australia, continue to have a huge following. We will be adding new features as we go along, including a Nostalgia section, starting next week with a report written almost 30 years ago on the great Irish import Grove Whisper. We welcome your comments, letters, and contributions editor@victoriangreyhoundweekly.com.au Thanks to all of the readers who left likes, and comments on our social media and facebook page, and who emailed the support to our email address. There is no doubt there is a place for a magazine like this to support the greyhound breeding industry, and the fact it is only available online, is just a sign of the times. We live in a computerised, online world, which might be a bit hard for some of us old timers to accept, But it is what it is and we have to accept it as such. Our updates on the breeding and trainers of winners for all meetings held at Sandown, The Meadows, Wentworth Park, and more recently, Angle Park have become increasingly popular. Our weekly reviews of litters registered in Victoria, and whelped in NSW, and the recently included ADVERTISING Obviously we cannot survive without advertising, however we hope you will find our rates more than reasonable, which will offer all owners, trainers, breeders and product suppliers the opportunity to communicate with the greyhound industry on a weekly basis. ADELAIDE CUP REVIEW By Shaun Mathieson Racing Manager Greyhound Racing SA Aqua Cheetah s Adelaide Cup Aqua Cheetah races away with his first Group 1 the Adelaide Cup (Photos by Walter Bulyga) LOCAL champion Worm Burner ($3) for Cameron Butcher and Weekend Binge for Kel Greenough were both sent out as the equal favourites but it was Aqua Cheetah who got the jump on his rivals as the boxes flew open. Worm Burner began better than expected from his inside box and was pushing through on the inside as a wall of four or five went to the first turn together. Aqua Cheetah accelerated and took control out the front straight however Worm Burner who looked like being positioned beautifully just behind the speed shifted out on the first turn causing trouble to most of his competitors and also cost himself many lengths. Weekend Binge dove back to the inside to chase out after the leader while Worm Burner balanced back up and set off after the leading pair. Dyna Boomer ($6.50) for Andrea Dailly who began very slowly on dispatch got a lovely run through on the first turn due to the interference and moved into fourth. Racing down the back straight Aqua Cheetah cleared out from his rivals running a blistering 16.64 of the back straight setting up a race winning break. Weekend Binge chased hard while Worm Burner out wide and Dyna Boomer on the rails both began making ground powerfully. Entering the front straight Aqua Cheetah was in no danger going on to win in a sizzling 29.41 for the 515m journey. He defeated Worm Burner by 2 lengths who flashed home for second and surely cost himself a chance at glory on the first turn while Dyna Boomer was able to charge home on the rails into third place one length away just ahead of a gallant Weekend Binge. Aqua Cheetah is a son of Cosmic Rumble and Dalta Bale and with his outstanding win Friday night takes his career earnings close to $150,000 with a record of 12 wins and 11 placings from his 30 starts. There is no doubt Aqua Cheetah looks a bright prospect in the making but one can t help but think what might have been had local star Worm Burner got around the first turn better. With more Group racing coming up on the National stage its exciting times ahead for all greyhound fans. After the placed runners the field finished in the following order 4th Weekend Boomer ($2.80), 5th Shima Song ($16), 6th Benteke ($8), 7th One For Me ($16) and 8th Mrs Bubbles ($41). Aqua Cheetah is raced by Mark Morgan and trained by Jason Thompson he is a Red Fawn dog whelped March 2014 by Cosmic Rumble from Dalta Bale (Pure Octane x Cynthia Bale). Aqua Cheetah has won 12 of his 25 starts and has been placed on 11 occasions after the first prize of $75,000 for the Adelaide Cup it took his current stake earnings to $148,113. They manufacture and source only the best quality products so that you can do your job as a trainer without the need to shop around. Our Story At Australian Greyhound Products they have been involved in the Greyhound industry for many years. Michael has been a greyhound owner for some 18 years and a greyhound trainer for 9 years and Kellie obtained her Public Trainers licence 3 years ago. In 2013 they both stepped into the breeding side of greyhounds with a litter of pups - Cora Bale x Magic Sprite which hit the tracks in 2015. They bred their next litter of pups - Cora Bale x Tonk which are due to hit the tracks in late 2016 or early in 2017. When they purchased the Australian Greyhound Muzzles business (the original business name) they decided they wanted to take it to the next level by becoming a one stop shop for greyhound owners and trainers. Since the acquisition of the business in January 2014 their product range has grown from 25 products to over 110 products and counting. After almost 12 months of planning and preparations they finally opened the Trackside Shop at Sandown Greyhounds in Springvale, Victoria in April 2015. Frank was the owner/trainer of one of the best stayers at the time, Miram Miss, and by trade was a toolmaker and plastics moulder in Moorabbin, Victoria. After his untimely death shortly after, his company was managed by a number of different people, and the muzzles had a somewhat checkered history until the business was acquired in 2005 by Azpak Marketing. Azpak Marketing was owned and run by veteran Victoria Greyhound Journalist, Roger Clark, the muzzles were moulded at Preston in Victoria, and Roger and his wife, Vicki did all the assembly work, selling and distribution for the business. Roger and Vicki who now live at Grantville near Phillip Island took an early retirement in January 2014 and Michael and Kellie took ownership of the business that is The Original Australian Nylon (Plastic) Greyhound Muzzles. At home or on the track your greyhounds will be happier wearing an Original Australian Nylon (Plastic) Muzzle. Proudly manufactured here in Australia by K B Ferguson & M L Ferguson using specially formulated nylon, which gives a tough, durable muzzle that is "kind" on your greyhound. They are light, very comfortable, yet incredibly hard wearing. The soft pliable feather weight of the Nylon means that your dogs will hardly know they have a muzzle on. The Original Australian Nylon (Plastic) Muzzle is ideal for traveling, kenneling, or on the track, and can be remoulded to fit the exact shape of any greyhound's head, simply by dipping in hot water, re-shaping and holding in cold water. The six different sizes are colour-coded and cater for all greyhounds from 22.5kg (50lbs) to 37.5kg (80lbs) and many other breeds of dogs. Phone: 0435 825 418 Email: ausgreyhoundproducts@outlook.com
