Acknowledgements We are indebted to the many naturalists and members of the public both past and present who have kindly allowed us to use their records; without these data the ability to develop an understanding of the distribution of mammals in Cumbria would not be possible. We are also indebted to our expert County Mammal Recorders who give up a lot of their time to check through all the hundreds or thousands of records submitted each year; checking the veracity of these data so the information that we hold is of the highest quality. Lastly, we want to thank those volunteers who have over the years given up many hundreds of hours of their time to enter records into our database; a task requiring attention to detail, skill, dedication and fortitude!

Introduction The Cumbrian Mammal Atlas aims to provide those with an interest in mammals a visual representation of the distribution of these 3 species or taxa in Cumbria. These data summarise the 8, mammal records (excluding whales and dolphins) that form part of the database of Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre (CBDC) based at Tullie House Museum, Carlisle. These records however would not exist without the enthusiasm and hard work of many biological recorders over the years, decades and indeed centuries! The earliest records are from 11 of red deer Cervus elaphus and fallow deer Dama dama and the most recent records are from 17, providing a range of over years. It is hoped this atlas will help people identify areas where there is a lack of recent records, so some survey effort can be applied to them. We at CBDC are always looking for high quality records of mammals (and other groups) irrespective of whether the species is common or rare. Notes on the maps These maps are working (draft) documents and will be updated when further records are obtained and when circumstances allow. Those grid squares on the map with at least one record of the presence of that species may be either pre-, post- (including the year ) or shown within both date ranges. The majority of squares are at tetrad (km x km) resolution whereas others are shown at hectad (km x km) level. The map showing the number of mammal species per km square is a summary which can if required, be used by comparing it with the table of hectads at the back of the atlas, for a determination of which species are present within each hectad. This atlas was inspired by Stephen Hewitt s work entitled Cumbrian Mammals; a Distribution Atlas published by Tullie House Museum, Carlisle in 06. We hope you find The Cumbrian Mammal Atlas useful. 1
