Pedigree cat breeds are grouped for judging, and each group has it s own Registrar to document registrations, transfers, etc. Below & ALLOWABLE OUTCROSSING Page 9 GROUP 1 In the Longhair group, Exotics may be mated with Persians, to maintain and improve the Persian type characteristics in the Exotic breed and tntroduce new coat colours and patterns and all resulting kittens of these matings are pedigreed. (An Exotic, in effect, is a short-haired Persian.) Long coated kittens from such matings are Persians, but shorthairs are registered Exotics. Both breeds come in a huge variety of coat colours and patterns. Coat patterns include solid, tortoiseshell, shaded (chinchilla, shaded silver, pewter, cameo, golden, smoke, etc), pointed (colourpoints - see note about himalayan gene under group 2), tabby, patched (bi-colour, torti & white, persian van). No inter-mating between Group 1 breeds (other than the above) is approved. Information from this booklet is now reproduced on the Internet, so updates are very welcome. Interested in showing cats? ALLOWABLE OUTCROSSING Below & Page 4 GROUP 2 All Group 2 breeds are developed from Siamese. Unlike the Siamese, who have colour only at the points, Orientals are fully coloured. If the Oriental parent carries the recessive himalayan gene that restricts colour to the points, and the dominant gene for full colour, matings between Siamese and Orientals can produce fully pedigreed kittens of both of these breeds, that are eligible for full registration. By careful selective breeding, over many generations, the gene for long hair was introduced into these two breeds resulting in the longhairs Balinese (colour at points) and Oriental Longhairs or Javanese (fully coloured). Their coats are silky, needing very little attention. Occasionally variants are offered for sale by breeders of the longhairs. These are fully pedigreed kittens that are eligible for registration. They result from mating a longhair to a shorthair or variant, or variant to variant (both approved matings to improve desirable features in the long-haired breeds). If the kittens inherit the recessive gene for long hair from both parents, they will have long fur. If they inherit it from only one parent, their fur will be short and they will be known as variants. Their pedigrees and registration papers will be marked carries longhair. The gene for short hair is dominant so it cannot be carried without its effect being seen. GROUP 3 The breeds in the Foreign Shorthair Group are many and varied, and each is very distinctive from the others. Coat colours and patterns, size, shape, coat length and texture (there s even a wavy coat) and temperament differ from breed to breed. Matings between breeds is not usual, except for Abyssinian to Somali, in Somali breeding programmes. (The introduction of the longhair gene into Abyssinians follows the same genetic principle as described under Group 2 for Siamese and Balinese.)
