Make a cuppa to save lives It s good to share! facebook.com/antibioticresearchuk @1Antruk #GBTeaParty Antibiotic Research UK is a registered charity in England and Wales (1157884)

A message from CEO (and big fan of tea and cakes) Prof. Colin Garner Dear Tea Party Host, As part of Antibiotic Awareness Week, we are holding our annual Great British Tea Party, giving you the perfect excuse to pop the kettle on, grab your friends, family and colleagues and indulge in a delicious slice (or two) of cake. The Great British Tea Party is held every year to coincide with World Antibiotic Awareness Week and we need as many of you as possible to stop for tea and cake, and raise as much money as you can to fight the impending health catastrophe of antibiotic resistance. Tea Parties can be as large or small as you want them to be and they can be held anywhere at your workplace, in your home, in your local community hall, in your local hospital in fact anywhere there s a kettle. World Antibiotic Awareness Week is held every November so why not make a week of it! What s not to love about tea and cake?! Don t forget, you ll be doing something brilliant all funds raised will go towards fulfilling our charity s mission to: Develop new antibiotic therapies by early 2020 s Educate the public and professionals about antibiotic resistance Provide patient information and support From all of us here at Antibiotic Research UK, a great big thank you!

How to get started on your Great British Tea Party Hosting a Great British Tea Party really is simple. All you need is a kettle, a collection box and friends. Here s how to create a successful event: Invite a few people to take time out and share a cuppa and indulge in a slice of cake, or a biscuit. Get your friends to spread the word and invite a plus one. Use the invitations and posters to spread the word (visit www.antibioticresearch.org.uk for downloads) Get your whisks at the ready and bake a cake. If baking isn t your forte, you can buy some instead (we won t tell!) Always eat cake responsibly! Don t forget to offer healthy and gluten free options How to fundraise at your Great British Tea Party Use your collection box and ask for donations Have a raffle Hold a gift sale Run a competition Lovely goodies available to download from our website Posters to advertise your event Invitations 3-sided information / table card Cake labels Paper chains Bunting Share your success on social media @1Antruk #GBTeaParty facebook.com/antibioticresearchuk

What does the Great British Tea Party raise money for? The money raised from Tea Parties goes towards research into new antibiotic therapies, education and patient information and support, in the fight to eliminate superbugs. Antibiotic resistance is becoming a global threat to us all and could lead to the end of modern medicine, which is wholly reliant on effective antibiotics, as we know it. Today s patients undergoing routine treatments such as cancer treatment or organ transplantation and hip and knee replacements are routinely given antibiotics to prevent infection. With the rise in antibiotic resistance all medical treatment could become life-threatening. Sepsis is a common cause of death in the UK with over 44,000 deaths each year. More people die from sepsis than lung cancer (35,000) and bowel cancer (16,000), and many of these sepsis deaths are due to untreatable antibiotic resistant infections. Our mission is to Save Modern Medicine by developing new antibiotic therapies, and the more money we raise the faster we will be able to start saving lives. Paying in your money You can send your donation to us in the following ways: Online Visit our website and pay by BACS, credit cards or PayPal. Please reference GBTP. http://www.antibioticresearch.org.uk/donate/ By Post Please do not send cash Send a cheque made payable to Antibiotic Research UK (ref. Emily s Story Young mum Emily Morris, has lived with antibiotic-resistant bacteria for a decade. I carry a resistant strain of E. coli known as ESBL E. coli. I m only 24, and if you look at how many antibiotics I ve gone through, I m already coming close to the end ones. By the time I m 40, I still want to have antibiotics left. But if they don t find new solutions, it is inevitable that one day I will run out. Dame Sally Davies, Chief Medical Officer who gave Antibiotic Research UK s Annual Lecture in October 2017 This resistance is with us now, killing people. This is a serious issue that is causing deaths. If it was anything else, people would be up in arms about it. But because it is hidden they just let it pass. It does not really have a face because most people who die of drug-resistant infections, their families just think they died of an uncontrolled infection. It will only get worse unless we take strong action everywhere across the globe. We need some real work on the ground to make a difference or we risk the end of modern medicine. Professor Colin Garner commented If ever there was a reason to support Antibiotic Research UK then Dame Sally s call for action is it. Please help us by donating, volunteering, spreading the word and anything else you can to help prevent this medical catastrophe.

Ultimate Chocolate Cake Ingredients 175g unsalted butter, 300g sugar, 3 large eggs beaten, 75g self-raising flour, 200g plain flour, 1tsp bicarbonate of soda, 75g cocoa powder, 200ml sour cream, 50g full-fat cream cheese, 100g white chocolate Decoration 300g double cream, 150g good quality dark chocolate, 150g milk chocolate, 16 24 Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate truffles, sweets or fresh fruits. Use a 20cm springform cake tin, buttered. Ultimate Chocolate Cake By Jo Wheatley (2011 Great British Bake Off Winner) Every baking book needs that chocolate cake, the one you can pull out of the bag and know that it will impress, comfort and celebrate and this is the one. This cake looks amazing and tastes even better, and you can decorate it with whatever takes your fancy. Preheat the oven to 180 o C / 350 o F / Gas Mark 4. Beat the butter and caster sugar together until pale, light and fluffy: this is easiest using a freestanding mixer or an electric hand-held mixer. Add the beaten flour, the bicarbonate of soda and the cocoa into a large bowl. Add half of the sifted dry ingredients to the butter-and-egg mixture and fold in using a large metal spoon. In another bowl, mix together the sour cream and cream cheese until smooth and fold half into the cake mixture. Repeat this process with the remaining flour and sour cream and mix until smooth. Fold in the chopped white chocolate and spoon the cake batter into the prepared tin. Spread level using a palette knife. Bake on the middle shelf of the preheated oven for about 1 hour or until the skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack. Meanwhile, prepare your decoration. Make a chocolate ganache by bringing the cream to the boil in a pan. Remove from the heat, then add the chopped chocolates and stir until smooth and shiny. Allow to cool completely. Spread a thin layer of the ganache over the sides and top of the cake using a palette knife. Stick the chocolate bars around the cake, with the smooth sides facing out. Wrap with a thick ribbon to keep the bars in place. Fill the centre of the cake with your favourite sweets, chocolate truffles or soft fruit. Top tip! If you need to make the chocolate bars the right height in proportion to your cake, use them at room temperature and trim them down (this works particularly well with Milky Bars). This will also give the cake a more informal look.

Fast Facts Antibiotic Resistance is the biggest threat to modern medicine Drug resistant superbugs kill more than 700,000 people globally each year In the UK alone, at least 12,000 people each year die from antibiotic resistant infections Without a solution, by 2050 it is estimated that 10 million people could die worldwide each year from a drug resistant infection Resistance occurs when bacteria evolve which can stop antibiotics from being effective The pharmaceutical industry isn t developing new antibiotics because investing in developing other drugs gives a better financial return Antibiotic resistance is on the rise due to: An overuse of antibiotics in farming Over prescribing by doctors Poor hygiene practices in hospitals Poor personal hygiene Slow diagnosis of antibiotic resistant infections Antibiotic Research UK is the first UK charity formed specifically to tackle this problem What can you do? Only use antibiotics when prescribed by a health carer Don t demand antibiotics from your doctor Don t use old or out-of-date antibiotics Don t use anyone else s antibiotics Don t flush old antibiotics down the loo (take them back to your local pharmacist) Wash your hands and be hygienic Spread the word amongst your family and friends Support Antibiotic Research UK
