March 2016 New Arrivals RIP: Zohara, Snowdrop & Phoebe Dog of the month: Kazan New UK Collection Point Finding Shelter Documentary NL News CLICK TO DONATE WWW.STREETDOGRESCUE.COM FOUNDATION NO. 175647065 EMAIL: STREETDOGRESCUE@GMAIL.COM

Page 2 NEW ARRIVALS Liddy Rescued 08 March 2016 Diane and Tony were driving down the main street in a busy town and spotted Liddy following people. She was getting shooed away and was just about to try and cross a very busy road when they managed to catch her. The poor girl was full of fleas and very dehydrated. Liddy has settled well at the shelter where she loves playing with her toys. Jack Rescued 14 March 2016 This little pup was found at the side of the road all alone. Scared, cold, full of fleas and very hungry. He is about 3-4 weeks old. Jack is now at the shelter and doing very well. Sidney, Mabel, Cinder & Bee Rescued 17 March 2016 A man turned up at the shelter asking them to take these older pups. It was explained that the shelter was full and there were no spare pens but he wouldn t listen. That night these four were dumped at the shelter and were found the next morning cowering near the container. All four were growling and trying to bite.

Page 3 REST IN PEACE On the 14 February we found Zohara curled up and passed away in her pen. We don t know what caused this. A couple of days before, she was getting a fuss from Tony who mentioned how well she was looking. We are very sorry we couldn t find her a forever home, we will miss her and will always remember this lovely gentle girl. 14 March 2016 We are so very sorry to let you all know that Snowdrop has passed away. We are devastated. She had been eating so well with 3 to 4 big meals a day. She had however gone a little off her food, and on the Friday she was distressed so was taken to the vets. Snowdrop died before Tony got halfway there. We are absolutely devastated. RIP beautiful little girl. xx 15 March 2016 I am afraid we have some more sad news to share. Phoebe collapsed in the morning. Tony and the boys rushed her to the vet, where they diagnosed her with a type of blood cancer. Unfortunately, the cancer was at a very advanced stage so the vet advised it would be kinder for her to be put to sleep. Rest in Peace beautiful Phoebe. We will never forget you xx

Page 4 SHELTER RENOVATION APPEAL This year RSDR want to concentrate on getting as many adoptions as possible so they can make space to do the renovations for the three parts inside the shelter which include: gutting, plastering of walls, floors and building proper separate pens and drainage. Their other goals are for a new perimeter fence, gates and new exercise yard fencing that was damaged in the storm. We have set up a fundraiser to first go towards the perimeter fence, gates and exercise yards and we have put the first target goal as 10,000. This goal figure is not accurate as we have no quotations from the Builder at this stage. This could take months as we have to source a new builder, as the one we currently used has now moved town. But if we can start fundraising this year towards our target goals, whilst reducing the animals at the shelter by half, with adoptions, we can then start renovations. RSDR has currently over 200 animals at the shelter, and to start renovations we need to get the figure of animals down to at least half. Page 8 NEW HIPS FOR ELLA Hello, my name is Ella and I am only eight months old. After a really tough start to life, I thought my life was starting to look up and now have to face another difficult challenge. Let me tell you my story I came to Rudozem Street Dog Rescue when my mum Mama dog gave birth to me and my siblings under an empty house in summer 2015. RSDR found us when we were five weeks old and took us to their shelter where we were cared for and looked after by wonderful people, Diane & Tony Rowles. After a while, they told me I might be able find my new mum and dad by going into foster care so I got on the adoption bus in November 2015 and moved to the Netherlands. It all seemed to be going so well. My foster mum is lovely and gives me lots of cuddles and I was loving my new life. But then, she noticed that I couldn t stand on my hind leg and that I was in a lot of pain. She took me to the vet where he took some x-rays. This is what the report on the x-rays said: VD (belly-back) x-ray: on both sides, the acetabulum (hip sockets) are very shallow and flattened, the cranial (front side) is minimal and on both sides the head of the femurs barely located in the hip sockets. SD (left-right) x-ray: at the level of the lower back, the femur visibly sticks out over the pelvis and there is a clear dislocation of this joint. Conclusion: Ella has a serious form of hip dysplasia (HD) with a definite dislocation in one of the joints. There are several options: artificial hips, femur head removal or pelvic osteotomy (TPO?). Another option of course is euthanisation (!) RSDR was given the difficult decision to put me to sleep. Diane and Tony thought long and hard because there are so many dogs that they need to help, but they just could not put an end to my life without me ever having the chance to know what it is like to be pain free and part of a loving family. So I will have to have an operation. It will be painful, but I can t wait to be able to walk properly and run again. A specialist advised that I should have an operation to remove or adjust my hipbone so that there will be no more friction between my leg and hip. He said that my recovery will be 80% where I ll be walking better, 95% of a painless life and it should only take me a few months of recovery time and building up my muscles. RSDR has very limited funds and the surgery to give me two new hips to help me walk will cost approximately 1,200 euros plus 175 euros for the x-rays! I will also need meds to help with my recovery. My foster mum said she is committed to helping me recover and looking after me, as well as giving lots of cuddles. But RSDR need to find the money to pay for my surgery & recovery costs so that they can continue to help other dogs and cats that come to them for help it s not all about me you know! By the 04 March 2016, you helped us raise the 2000 for Ella s new hips and on the 21 March 2016 she went to the vets for her fist operation. The surgery went very well and if things continue to do so she is scheduled for next operation in May. You can see her full story and updates here: https://www.youcaring.com/rudozem-street-dogrescue-527528 We are so incredibly grateful for your support. Thank you to everyone for raising the funds for little Ella, giving her the chance of a pain free life. xx

Page 9 NEWS FROM RSDR NETHERLANDS Fosters Lewis has graduated! Lewis, who is currently staying in a foster family in the Netherlands, decided to not wait until he was adopted to get his very first diploma from doggy school. Sit, stay, walking nicely on the lead and more difficult tasks like not eating off the street or being distracted by other dogs were no problem for Lewis and he passed with flying colours! Lewis is absolutely ready for the next step, finding his own forever home. He is a lovely, playful boy. He loves to frolic with other dogs and he will be your most loyal companion. The only challenge he faces is that he is not the biggest fan of unfamiliar guests in the home. Whoever adopts Lewis will probably have to offer him his own space behind closed doors when guests are invited over or is willing to spend time in introducing him to new guests very slowly. Or maybe you just don t have many guests over but would like to have the worlds most loyal and not to mention smart companion! Lewis is looking for a family without children to help him face this challenge together. Are you in the Netherlands and looking to adopt? Feel free to fill in the adoption form so we can answer any possible questions. www.rsdrnederland.nl/adoptie-in-nederland-en-belgiee-1/ aanvraagformulier-hond Dipley, Kim and Tilly are adopted!! KIZZY We are happy to announce that all three lovely dogs have been adopted by wonderful families. Some dogs need somewhat longer to get used to their new environments and be prepared for a life in a family home. We would like to thank ALL the foster families for all the time and effort and love and we wish the new families years of furry fun! Sorcha Would you like to become a foster family? Please fill out the form and one of our volunteers will contact you with further information.

Page 10 NEWS FROM RSDR NETHERLANDS Beach walk The annual RSDR NL beach walk took place on 20 March and more than 70 dogs and their families joined us on this sunny day! Everyone met up in the parking lot near the beach and some of the dogs already got to meet some of their old friends. Once everyone had arrived, we walked towards the beach with a slight excitement in the air. Once in a safe area, the dogs that can walk off leash were let off and what a site it was! Dogs were playing with each other, racing along the beach and playing in the water. Even the dogs on leash were able to enjoy a strong beach breeze and get to greet and play with fellow RSDR and non-rsdr dogs. After a good walk at the beach we walked to the hotel het Wapen van Marion where we go every year to recuperate and have cup of coffee or tea and some snacks and water for the dogs. All 70 dogs and even more people in the room and the dogs behaved so incredibly well. Which event would be complete without a raffle?? Dutch team member Jenny managed to collect a stunning collection of prizes with first prize being a coffee machine and second prize being a big purple bean bag seat from Loungies! The winner of the bean bag only just managed to fit it in their car yes that s how big it was! The official part of the day was rounded off with some words from the Dutch team coordinator Ineke, followed by a presentation about the shelter. Olaf, who has travelled to the shelter several times himself, gave a very good impression of the amount of time that goes into the daily care of all the animals in the shelter KIZZY and explained the importance of having volunteers visit the shelter: Not only can people offer a helping hand but also help socialize the dogs by taking them for walks. It was an eye opening presentation and hopefully many people will consider a holiday to Bulgaria with some days to spare at the shelter in Rudozem. Sorcha Thank you to Jenny and everyone who helped in organising another successful beach walk! Feel like you missed out? Join us next year!

Page 11 NEWS FROM RSDR NETHERLANDS Loungies The Dutch company Loungies did not only donate a bean bag seat for the annual beach walk raffle but have made a very generous offer: For every bean bag seat they sell and the person mentions RSDR in their order, Loungies will donate 10euros to RSDR! So, are you looking for a high quality and comfy seat in different colours and patterns, order yours and don t forget to mention your favourite dog rescue! www.loungies.nl KIZZY Sorcha

While we were waiting for transport to pick up our adopted dogs on the 23 February 2012, we were all inside having a cup of tea inside having a cup of tea inside, to our surprise when we went out again we found 5 pups in a box by the gate. Kazan was born around the 2nd February 2012. He is a confident and outgoing boy who loves people. He gets on with most dogs but there have been a few times when he hasn't been so good with adult male dogs. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you think you could offer him the forever home he so deserves, please complete an adoption application on our website: www.streetdogrescue.com/adopt
