MONDAY: Following is a rundown of each day s proposed activities. Future Vet Kids Camp reserves the right to make changes to its programming where necessary. 8:30-9:00: The kids arrive at Camp Headquarters on their first day and are welcomed by our friendly and enthusiastic group of Camp Instructors. Each child must be signed in by the guardian dropping them off and signed copies of registration documents need to be submitted to administrative personnel at this time. Please note, for obvious security reasons, children will only be released to the guardian that dropped them off unless otherwise notified. 9:30-12:15: This morning, the Kookaburras are off on an excursion to BALMAIN ANIMAL HOSPITAL where they will get a behind the scenes tour of this dynamic hospital including its surgery theatre and cattery and learn from hospital staff about the ins and outs of small animal medicine and the running of a purpose built facility like Balmain. 12:15-1:00: Lunch time! Kids are responsible for bringing their own peanut free lunch and drink. Our Instructors will continue to supervise the children throughout the lunch period. 1:00-2:00: What can be learned from the blood and what do the various types of red and white blood cells look like under the microscope? Our Kookaburras will now be taught the BASICS OF BLOOD WORK in preparation for the many fascinating case studies ahead of them this week. 2:15-3:30: Our Kookaburras will now be treated to a visit from the GREY HOUND RESCUE organisation and get some hands on time with this gentle, handsome breed. The kids will learn all about this specific breed and the benefits of adopting from rescue groups in general. In the second half of this session, Dr. Scott Bainbridge will perform a basic K9 PHYSICAL EXAM and show the kids what to look for in this fundamentally important first diagnostic step. TUESDAY: 8:30-9:00: The kids arrive at Camp Headquarters, attendance is taken and the day s activities are explained. Please note that for security reasons, each child must be signed in by the guardian dropping them off unless we have been notified otherwise.

9:00-10:00: We have a special treat for our Kookaburras this morning; Drs. Audrey and Alison Shen are (twin!) veterinarians who operate a mobile vet service. They will arrive at Camp HQ in their AUSSIE MOBILE VET unit to show us all what it s like to be vets on wheels! 10:15-12:15: In addition to their general practice, Dr. Audrey has completed a Postgraduate Course in Ophthalmology and Dr. Alison is a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist so these vets have heaps of experience to share with our lucky Kookaburras! After a very informative session about what a day in the life of a mobile vet is like and a tour of their clinic on wheels, Dr. Alison will lead the group in a session on ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES like acupuncture and laser therapy followed by the first of many fascinating CASE STUDIES 12:15-1:00: Lunch time! As always, kids are responsible for bringing their own peanut free lunch and drink. Our Instructors will continue to supervise the kids over the lunch period. 1:00-2:00: After lunch the Kookaburras will be taught how to draw blood and practice their technique on artificial dog veins during the BLOOD DRAW WORKSHOP. 2:15-3:30: Next Dr. Scott will lead the group in yet another fascinating CASE STUDY (topic TBD) working through a simulated veterinary case from beginning to end. Starting with a role play of an actual appointment, the Kookaburras will see what information needs to be extracted from the owner, decide which tests to run, interpret those test results and come up with a diagnosis and treatment plan. WEDNESDAY: by the guardian dropping them off unless we have been notified otherwise. 9:00-12:15: First on the agenda this morning REPTILES, INSECTS & WILDLIFE as we are joined by the specialized animal handlers from AUSTRALIAN WILDLIFE DISPLAYS! This informative, hands-on session exposes the children to a vast collection of creatures. AWD s travelling menagerie of animals includes lizards, snakes, turtles, crocodiles, possums, birds and much, much more! 12:15-1:00: Lunch time! Kids are responsible for bringing their own peanut free lunch and drink. Our Instructors will continue to supervise the kids over the lunch period.

1:00-2:00: Dr. Leigh Davidson specializes in horses and we have invited her by to talk to the kids about what s involved in the practice of EQUINE MEDICINE. We ll see if we can t even get a real live horse for the demo... stay tuned! 2:15-3:30: Proper TRAINING is essential for our pets. It builds trust, makes our pets more welcome in a variety of settings and ultimately helps keep our pets happy and healthy. BONDI BEHAVIOURIST IAN SHIVERS has an in-depth understanding of dog psychology, plus over nine years of experience working with countless dog breeds, ages, sizes, temperaments and issues. His approach is to create a calm and confident relationship that makes life with our pets easier and more enjoyable. We are so pleased to have Ian and his team visit us at camp again this year to share their experience, tips and insights in the realm of training/behaviour. THURSDAY: by the guardian dropping them off unless we have been notified otherwise. 9:00-2:30: FARM ANIMALS & EXOTICS: We have a special day in store for our Kookaburras as they travel by coach to Bayview where they will spend the day getting up close and personal with the many animals that inhabit the McCallum Homestead & Hobby Farm. An accomplished horse trainer, Samantha McCallum has had horses all her life. She has a keen interest in natural horsemanship as well as hacking, dressage, hunter under saddle and western pleasure. Sam will walk our group through a training session and basic equine husbandry. We ll also tour the cattery, learn how Sam got involved with fostering Hyacinth (Blue) Macaws and the farm s local veterinarian will perform a physical exam on one of the resident alpacas. 2:30-4:00: Campers return to Headquarters where, time permitting, they are free to add today s memories and impressions to their notebooks before being signed out by their caregiver. FRIDAY: by the guardian dropping them off unless we have been previously notified.

9:00-10:00: Being able to correctly IDENTIFY BREEDS is essential for veterinarians, vet nurses, animal control officers, dog trainers, behaviourists or anyone whose job it is to know and understand canines. Following lunch, the Kookaburras will put their breed knowledge to the test during this interactive presentation on the seven recognized groups of dogs. 10:15-12:15: Future Vet Kids Camp is thrilled to have VETS BEYOND BORDERS (VBB) presenting at this year s camp! Around the world, animal welfare organisations are striving to improve the lives of animals that have no other access to veterinary attention. A main obstacle to providing such treatment is a lack of adequate veterinary health facilities and clinical personnel, resulting in widespread animal suffering. VBB is an Australianbased charity, that recruits highly experienced volunteer vets and vet nurses, deploying them into communities to work with local vets and associated staff to provide quality animal care. They also deliver clinical training to refine the skills of animal welfare workers overseas, and a community/school education program designed to increase awareness of the importance of kindness to animals, how to behave around animals and responsible pet ownership a vision we at Future Vet Kids Camp shares and wholeheartedly supports. Can t wait to hear stories from and about this wonderful Australian based initiative! 12:15-1:00: Lunch time! As always, kids are responsible for bringing their own peanut free lunch and drink. 1:00-2:30: As their name suggests, SYDNEY WILDLIFE operates in the Greater Sydney Area; extending from the Hawkesbury River in the north to Picton in the south and from the foothills of the Blue Mountains to the ocean. As well as caring for sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife, Sydney Wildlife is very involved in educating the community which is why they are coming to speak with our Kookaburras about native wildlife and its habitat. 2:45-4:00: All good things must come to an end and so now is the time to wrap up the week and say our Goodbyes! Parents are welcome to join us at Camp HQ for our graduation ceremony and a few parting words from a couple of inspirational guests. Along with their keepsake notebooks full of memories, each child will receive a certificate of participation to commemorate their experience with us at FUTURE VET KIDS CAMP. We hope your kids have enjoyed their week with us. Please check out our website for upcoming camp sessions and exciting new programming. Thanks from all of us here at FUTURE VET KIDS CAMP!
