TEL: (01432) 761882 PRIME LAMBS - 1238 MARKET REPORTS WEDNESDAY 10th January 2018 Auctioneer - Richard Hyde A very short entry but a correspondingly flying trade to SQQ 189.9p. Farming sheep very short in supply as lambing gets closer and the store finishers are not really on form yet. Heavies to 97 with plenty over 90. Best export to 205.6p with all good quality sheep 190p+. 7 buyers competing well on all sorts but shortage in the supply and demand equation will always lift a trade, and it certainly did. National average Monday 181.8p, Tuesday 183.9p. Today Hereford SQQ 189.9p. Every hogg sold averaged 82.24. More needed next week. STORE EWE HOGGS - 3476 Auctioneer - Greg Christopher MIXED HOGGS ( /head) RAM HOGGS ( /head) TEXEL 82.50 83.50 CHAROLLAIS 75.20 85.80 SUFFOLK 74.20 68.00 WELSH MULE 63.00 80.00 WELSH 56.50 65.50 SPECKLE 43.00 49.50 An excellent entry saw a very animated trade from start to finish with store hoggs the dearest of the season. A good show of hoggs for the time of year very much appreciated by the large crowd of purchasers with fresh men from the Midlands and south east. Sheep going to all parts of the country although a smaller Welsh contingent due to weather and ground conditions. More strength on show with these very well sold topping at 85.80. Plenty of hoggs from 75 to 83.50. Good farming hoggs taking a good lift seeing them 3-4 dearer on the week, these trading 66 to 74, several bunches from 70 to 74, with generally a lot of business from 67 to 73. Medium keeping hoggs from 60 to 64.80 with men keen for level bunches, these need to be carefully drawn to remove smaller and plainer hoggs to maximise returns. Longer keeping lambs generally similar to recent weeks and no more money, ground conditions making smaller hoggs harder to farm. Well bred types 54 to 59.50 providing the hoggs had cover and condition, long term sorts from 46 to 52 for plainer and harder bred types with frame. Again like recent weeks several smaller hill type hoggs - these slightly easier to sell but still trading generally from 30 to 45. Ram hoggs to 85.80, all strength 70 to 80. Farming types 60 to 66, hill bred sorts from 30 to 50 depending on frame and condition. Overall average 57. IN LAMB EWES - 327 Auctioneer - Rob Meadmore Another grand show of in-lamb ewes, with a generally younger show of sheep. Excellent clearance effected with a top price of 150 for a sweet pen of 2 and 3 year old Texel ewes, part of a marvellous consignment from M/s J P Sevenoaks & Sons, Greidol Farm. The same vendor sold then at 148 (twice), 146, 142, 141 etc. Welsh Mule yearling ewes to 130, 2 year olds to 137, 3 s to 130 and 4 s at 120. In the older ewes full mouth Suffolk ewes to 106, Dorsets to 102, North Country Mules to 98 (twice), aged Welsh ewes sold easily to 70 and again at 56. 3
REARING/WEANED CALVES - 36 Auctioneer - Michael Evans The larger entry included 14 strong rearing calves all under 36 days, they sold to 410 for a Blue x Fleckvieh bull with another at 400. 5 other bulls sold from 285 to 305 for Blues with an Angus at 320. Heifers met demand throughout and more could have been well sold. Top price was 350 for a Blonde x, 5 Blue x from 250 to 300, Simmental x at 340, 1 Angus x at 150. 22 weanlings sold to 570 for a good shaped 8 month Limousin x heifer. Other good conformation heifers sold well with Limousin to 505, Charolais x to 495, others from 320 to 445, steers sold to 500 with others from 305 to 500. A Friesian bull at 240. Total clearance effected. We need a constant weekly entry of calves, please let the office know if you are bringing calves by the Monday prior to the Wednesday sale. MORE CALVES CAN BE SOLD EACH WEEK. VENDORS - PLEASE LET THE OFFICE KNOW BY 5.00pm ON MONDAY PRIOR TO THE SALE IF YOU ARE BRINGING CALVES Calves born 7th December 2017 or since can be sold from farms that are TB clear without needing to be tested at our next sale on 17th January 2018. Please telephone Mike Evans 07768 601999 or Rob Meadmore on 07774 763791 CULL EWES - 2013 Auctioneer - Matthew Nicholls A sound entry of ewes with plenty of demand for those stronger types with Suffolks to 104/head and Texels to 112/head. A definite shortage of those best Texels. A large majority of those leaner and plainer hill bred ewes, Speckle and Welsh but even these were a little stronger than last week. The overall average of 54/head is more a reflection of the type of ewes forward and not the trade. Rams to 102.50/head. It is more likely that the trade will ease over the next few weeks as the scanning ewes come out. An extra buyer in attendance ensuring a buoyant trade. Average /head - 54 Continental 112 Suffolks 104 North Country Mules 94 Welsh Mules 75 Speckles 53 Welsh 60 Cull Rams 102.50 Cull Wethers 81 Cull ewe eartags - All cull ewes and rams must have FULL EID TAGS to be sold in Hereford Market ************************************************* All sections completed selling by 2.15pm today 4
NOTICE TO VENDORS OF STORE HOGGS We are having increased incidence of C.Ovis being reported by abattoirs when slaughtering hoggs. This condition in the carcase of hoggs is caused by worms from dogs which can lead to the carcass being 100% condemned. Most farm dogs are correctly wormed, but please make certain that your worming programme is up to date and be aware that most incidences of C.Ovis arise from land with public access, footpaths or common land where dogs roam. Unauthorised dog-walking on your land can cause problems - please be aware. All ram hoggs need to be declared and sold separate to bunches of mixed hoggs. Any ram hoggs found in a bunch of mixed hoggs not declared to the auctioneers will be subject to a price reduction. We have buyers for ram hoggs so please do not put them in bunches of clean mixed hoggs. Vendors please note - any hoggs not presented correct for sale and not declared to the auctioneers will risk being deducted. ALL HOGGS PRESENTED IN THE STORE SECTION NEED TO BE TAGGED WITH AN ELECTRONIC SLAUGHTER TAG AS MINIMUM. VENDORS ALSO NEED TO PROVE THEIR HOGGS ARE FARM ASSURED AS THIS HAS BECOME AN IMPORTANT FACTOR. SHEEP TAGS ** Updated 22nd March 2016 ** All sheep born on or after 1 st January 2015 have to be tagged with one electronic slaughter tag if going to slaughter or to a store market for further finishing. If intended to be kept for or sold as breeding stock they will need to be FULL EID tagged as has been the requirement since 1 st January 2010. Historic flock (the sheep born before 1 st January 2010 which have been kept as breeding stock) when these come to be moved/sold either as breeding stock or as cull ewes they will NEED TO BE RE-TAGGED WITH FULL EID (electronic and same manual number). Cull ewe eartags - All cull ewes and rams must have FULL EID TAGS to be sold in Hereford Market. Hereford Market Auctioneers will not be able to accept sheep for sale which are not tagged correctly. Always have taggers and spare tags available in your vehicle. EAR TAGS - EVERY SHEEP IN THE MARKET MUST BE ELECTRONICALLY TAGGED. IF THEY ARE NOT THEY WILL NOT BE SOLD AT HEREFORD Eartags and holding numbers - please note that it is essential that the correct holding numbers are entered onto the licence of sheep coming in to the market and also for those sheep moving out. For those with multiple holding numbers the correct ones must be used not merely the main holding number if it is not relevant to that movement. Please note that Hereford Market Auctioneers Ltd take no responsibility whatsoever for holding numbers on licences whether in or out of the market, or notifications to A.R.A.M.S. 5
