Golden Retriever Club of Canada THE NAN GORDON MEMORIAL TROPHY WINNERS by Mary Shillabeer AUREO KYRIE TOUF ACTO FOLLOW CD WC Since 1983, the Golden Retriever Club of Canada has recognized the versatility of our breed at the National Specialty by offering the NAN GORDON MEMORIAL TROPHY to the dog that places in conformation, qualifies in obedience and passes a field test. In its history, the GRCC Nan Gordon Memorial Trophy (which was donated by Katherine Gordon in memory of her husband Nan ) has only been awarded fourteen times, by twelve different dogs with nine different owners. 1983 AUREO KYRIE TOUF ACTO FOLLOW CD WC Owner/Breeder: Neida Heusinkvelt 1993 WHEATFIELDS MASTER MIND Owner: Ches Smith, Breeder: Judi Edgar 1995 AUREO FOOTLOOSE'N FANCY FREE Am JH WC Owner/Breeder: Neida Heusinkvelt 1996 GOLDWEST DAKOTA BOUND TD WC Owner: Alec and Nathalie Moffat, Breeder: Carol Beaulieu 1998 WINGMASTER WINSM MORNINGSTAR Am CDX WCX SH Owners: Dennis McConnell/Ginnie Pastor, Breeder: Helene Friedwald

1999 WINGMASTER WINSM MORNINGSTAR CD WCI; Am CDX SH WCX Owners: Dennis McConnell/Ginnie Pastor, Breeder: Helene Friedwald 2001 CH JUSTMOOR BOODACIOUS JH WCI Owner: Mary Shillabeer, Breeder: Marjorie Moore 2004 MHR OTCH CH JUSTMOOR BOODACIOUS WCX MH; Am CD Owner: Mary Shillabeer, Breeder: Marjorie Moore 2007 CH AMBERWOOD WINTER WONDERLAND JH WCI; Am WC Owner: Shelly Blom, Breeder: Nancy Fieder 2008 CH CREEKSIDEFRM S WINDCHIME WC RN Owner: Jennifer Dawson, Breeder: Sheila Standish 2009 CH MOTCH HOT ROD ON A GOLDEN KISS CD MH TDX WCX DD; Am CD Owner: Lori Little, Breeder: Cecile & Jon Kiss 2011 GMH OTCH ZANIRI S CUSTOM COUPE DD WCX; Am WC Owner: Lori Little, Breeder: Linda Langford, Laureen & Joanne Kinney 2012 CH MOTCH SR ZANIRI S PIECE BY PIECE SH WCX; Am WCX Owner: Leanne Tucker, Breeders: Joanne & Laureen Kinney, Lynne Dowling 2013 STERRE BADLANDS OUTLAW JH WCI; Am JH Owner: Shelly Blom, Breeder: Shelly Blom The first Nan Gordon Memorial Trophy was awarded to "Bruiser" AUREO KYRIE TOUF ACTO FOLLOW CD WC in 1983 at Joker's Hill in Ontario. Neida Heusinkvelt kindly supplied me with the following: For the record, "Bruiser" officially was AUREO KYRIE TOUF ACTO FOLLOW Am UD JH WCX; Can UD WC. He earned the trophy that year by placing first in Bred- By Dog, first in Open A Obedience, and earning his WC. He was two years old at the time and lived well past 15 years of age - quite an outgoing ambassador personality; a multiple HIT dog - always enthusiastic about any game he played. Owner/Breeder/Handler Neida Heusinkvelt, Bruiser and unknown woman 2

It was ten long years before another Golden qualified in all three venues again. In Edmonton, Alberta in 1993, novice owner Ches Smith qualified for the Nan Golden with his fourteen- month old boy, Rusty. When Ches and WHEATFIELDS MASTER MIND WC came out of the Obedience ring after qualifying in Novice A, Rusty was immediately handed off to his breeder Judi Edgar, to be shown to a placement in the Canadian Bred Conformation class under judge Marcia Schlehr. Judi noted that Marcia came out to watch Ches and Rusty earn their WC the next day. With ten years passing since a team qualified for this trophy, it was a proud moment for breeders Judi and Bob Edgar. L to R - Bob Edgar, Judi Edgar, Ches Smith, Bob James (j. WC) At the GRCC National in the Toronto area in 1995, Neida Heusinkvelt earned the Nan Gordon for the second time, this time with her Tootsie AUREO FOOTLOOSE'N FANCY FREE Am JH WC, by placing third in Bred- By Bitch, second in Novice B and earning her WC. Quite spry in her senior years, Tootsie she earned her AGX in Canada in the summer of 2003 and was entered in July 2004 to find that last Canadian UD leg she was missing. Unfortunately she died quite suddenly mid July 2004 as a result of a stroke following a successful spleen removal - AUREO FOOTLOOSE N FANCY FREE AGX CDX WC; Am UDT MX MXJ JH WCX would have been 13 the following October. L to R Cheryl Shaw (j. Conformation), Freda Walls (j. Obedience), Owner/Breeder/Handler Neida Heusinkvelt, Bruce Russell (j. WC) 3

In June of 1996, Alec and Nathalie Moffat were honoured to have won the Nan Gordon Memorial Trophy with their Golden boy Dakota GOLDWEST DAKOTA BOUND TD WC, in Delta, BC. Nathalie wrote that she remembers that particular trophy quite well, as they were totally new to competing in dog events and they didn t quite realize at the time how special the award is. At just under two years of age, Dakota earned a leg for his CD from the Novice A class, placed second in the Canadian Bred class and qualified for his WC. In his lifetime Dakota, who was bred by Carol Beaulieu, eventually became CH GOLDWEST DAKOTA BOUND CDX JH WCI TD; Am TD. Dakota passed away around Christmas in 2003. Dakota with handler Bernie Reddick In 1998, "Winnie" WINGMASTER WINSM MORNINGSTAR Am CDX WCX SH won "The Nan" with great style, winning Reserve Winners Bitch, High In Trial and earning her WC in Saint John, New Brunswick. Through the rest of that weekend, she earned eight CKC Champion points, a BOS from the NBKC show and her CD! In 1999, WINGMASTER WINSM MORNINGSTAR CD WCI; Am CDX SH WCX returned to Canada, this time to Nepean, Ontario to earn back- to- back "Nan's". She placed second in the Open Bitch class, second in the Open A Obedience class with a score of 190 and completed the task by qualifying for her WCI. Can CH WINGMASTER WINSM MORNINGSTAR CD WCX; Am CDX MH WCX; CCA VC OD was owned by Dennis McConnell and Ginnie Pastor of Warwick, New York and was bred by Helene Friedwald. Winnie passed in 2009, at almost 14 years of age. Dennis McConnell & Winnie with their Nan Gordon Memorial Trophy 4

WINGMASTER WINSM MORNINGSTAR Am CDX WCX SH with conformation handler, Berna Welch In 2001, for the first time two dogs qualified for the Nan Gordon at the GRCC National in Surrey, British Columbia. The runner- up qualifier was Christine Kobler with FYREGLO DANCES WITH REDGOLD WC JH TD; Am CD TD JH, bred by Jane Christy and Bill Joyner. Scarlett aka Scary, placed second in Canadian Bred, qualified in Novice B Obedience with a score of 184 ½, and earned her WCI. When the tally was done, Boon SR CH JUSTMOOR BOODACIOUS JH WCX; CGC, bred by Marjorie Moore and owned by myself, Mary Shillabeer, earned more points and was awarded "The Nan" by placing second in the Field Dog class, High in Class in Novice A with a 190 ½ and earning his WCX title. Owner/Handler, Mary Shillabeer, Boon and John MacDonald, GRCC President 5

In 2004, I have to give credit where credit is due. As the Chairperson of the 2004 GRCC National in Calgary, I was extremely busy with the many tasks that kept our event running smoothly. By mid- day I was ready to pull Boon MHR OTCH CH JUSTMOOR BOODACIOUS WCX MH; Am CD from Open B, as I was just too distracted and busy. My friend Beth Barrett took him into the Open ring for me, even though she was working toward the Nan Gordon as well, with her special girl Brio. Boon worked very nicely for her...totally bewildered as to why she was in the ring with him, he qualified with a 191. Tiffany Waite handled Boon to a first placement in the Field Dog class and I ran him in the WCX. Boon s success at the 2004 National was definitely a team effort! Year after year he demonstrated his versatility. My once- in- a- lifetime dog died of prostate cancer in February 2008. He was training for his TD, right up to a few weeks before we lost him. Two points short of his MVC, Boon became MHR CH OTCH BISS GMH Justmoor Boodacious WCX AGNS; GRCC VCX VHOF, Am CDX CGC; Am Can BVISS; Pals Therapy Dog. Boon and his haul from the 2004 GRCC National At the 2007 GRCC National in Brownsburg, Quebec, the Nan Gordon Memorial Trophy was awarded to Winter and Shelly Blom. CH AMBERWOOD WINTER WONDERLAND JH WCI; Am WC won the Field Dog Class and was awarded a Judge s Award of Merit, he qualified in Novice B Obedience and passed his WCI Test. At the field test, there were three other dogs in the running for the Nan Gordon. Winter was the only dog to make it to water and to qualify in all three events. Winter s breeder is Nancy Fieder and his very proud owner, handler and trainer is Shelly Blom. Winter, the patriarch at Sterre Golden Retrievers, is now Can CH; UKC CH Amberwood Winter Wonderland SH WCX CD VCI; Am SH WCX CD CCA VC 6

Owner/Handler Shelly Blom & Winter In early 2008, the GRCC Board updated and clarified the requirements for the Nan Gordon Memorial Trophy. The writing was on the wall that there could be a year when the rules, as they were written, would not be clear enough to determine a winner in the event of multiple qualifiers. The wording was changed to clarify that a pass in the WC series, not a title, met the requirements. In conformation, JAM s were added to the list of eligible placements. Before 2008, a Judge s Award of Merit was not listed as a possible option for the conformation portion of the award. The Gordon family was consulted on the purposed updates. They were adamant that puppies were not to be eligible for the award. The 2008 GRCC National was held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Breeze, CH CREEKSIDEFRM'S WINDCHIME WC RN, qualified for the Nan Gordon Memorial trophy by winning the Best Gun Bitch, qualifying in the Novice B, winning HIC with a 185 and passing the WC test. After the Nan Gordon, Breeze went on to earn her JH and finish her CD title. Breeze wasn't destined to have puppies, as she had to be spayed due to pyometra. Her owner, Jennifer Dawson commented that the best thing about Breeze was that she was a much loved, great friend with a wonderful Golden temperament. Sadly, Jennifer lost Breeze, CH CreeksideFrm's Windchime JH WC RN CD; GRCC VC to cancer on December 19 th, 2011, at 7 ½ years of age. 7

L to R Rhonda Shewchuk (conformation handler), Marion Postgate (j. Obedience), Owner, Jennifer Weselak- Dawson, Charlotte Hewey, (obedience handler) In 2009, the National returned to Surrey, BC. For the first time, three dogs qualified for the Nan Gordon trophy, with only a narrow margin between them. Lori Little and her boy Zak, CH MOTCH HOT ROD ON A GOLDEN KISS MH TDX WCX DD; Am CD WCX were declared the winner by placing 1 st in the Field Dog Class and Best Field Dog, earning a score of 197 in Open B and passing the WCX test. Only slighted edged out, was Lori s other boy Chevy (Zak s son) ZANIRI'S CUSTOM COUPE MH DD WCX; Am WC who also qualified for the Nan Gordon trophy by placing 2 nd in the Field Dog Class, earning a 197 in Open B and passing the WCX test. This group of over achievers was rounded out by Chica ZANIRI'S CHEEKY MONKEY SH WCX, handled by owner/breeder Joanne Kinney who placed 1 st in the Canadian Bred Class, as well as 1 st in the Gun Bitch Class and Best Gun Dog, overall. Chica earned a score of 189 in Novice B and passed the WCX test. Lori Little s 2009 winner, Zak passed away in February of 2013, at 13 year of age. Considering there are many Nationals where not a single dog qualifies for the Nan Gordon trophy, having three dogs meet the criteria was extraordinary. 8

Zak In 2011, The Golden Retriever Club of British Columbia hosted the GRCC National again in Surrey, BC. Lori Little s Chevy continued in his versatile ways, and qualified for the Nan Gordon a second time, this time taking home the hardware. GMH OTCH ZANIRI'S CUSTOM COUPE DD WCX; Am WC, Chevy earned at score of 196.5 in Utility (and a 196 in Open B, for his first OTCHX leg!), a 1 st place in the Field Dog class in Conformation and passed the WCX test, to be the only qualifier for this National. Chevy and his sire Zak, are the only father/son winners of the Nan Gordon Memorial trophy. Chevy was bred by Joanne and Laureen Kinney and is now GMH MOTCH Zaniri's Custom Coupe Can TD DDX WCX; GRCC MVC; Am WC CCA j. Jane Jensen, Owner/Handler Lori Little & Chevy 9

2012 was another big year for the Western Canadian Goldens, as the GRCC National was once more held in Surrey, BC. Leanne Tucker and her special boy Puzzle CH MOTCH ZANIRI S PIECE BY PIECE SH WCX; Am WCX won the honour of having his name engraved on the Nan Gordon Memorial trophy. Puzzle was Best Gun Dog (overall), earned a 197.5 in Open B (and qualified in Utility with a 193.5 as well) and passed the WCX test! Puzzle breeders are Joanne and Laureen Kinney, and Lynn Dowling. In typical West Coast fashion...there were TWO other teams that qualified for the Nan Gordon Trophy in 2012. Following hot on Puzzle s footsteps was Susan Highton and Stella MOTCH ZANIRI SCENTER OF THE UNIVERSE SH TD WCX, who won Best Gun Bitch (1 st in class), earned a 195.5 in Utility (and a 195 in Open, for a GMOTCH leg!) and passed the WCX test. The third qualifier was Judi Dunlop and Chai TANGLEWOOD TICKET TEA BOO CGN PCD, who placed 1 st in the 12 18 Month Female class, earned a 183 in Novice a and passed the WC test. This is not the first time for multiple qualifiers in the West...the hot bed of multi- purpose Golden Retrievers! Puzzle continues to impress, and is now known as CH GMOTCH SR Zaniri's Piece By Piece MH WCX VCX; Am UD WCX ** CCA VC. j. Brenda Wilson, Owner/Handler Leanne Tucker & Puzzle 10

An example as to how the scoring works, here is a break down from 2012. "Puzzle" Best Gun Dog (Overall) 10+ Open B 197.5 WCX 40 Total 247.5 points "Stella" Best Gun Bitch (1st in Class) 10 Utility 195.5 WCX 40 Total 245.5 points "Chai" 1st, 12 18 Month Female Class 10 Novice A 183 WC pass 25 Total 218 points In 2013, on the East coast in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Shelly Blom and her homebred boy "Butch" STERRE BADLANDS OUTLAW JH WCI; Am JH won the Nan Gordon Memorial trophy. Butch earned his WCI (the only dog to qualify at the WC tests), a qualifying score in Novice Obedience and he placed first in the Bred- by class. This is the second time Shelly has won the Nan Gordon Memorial trophy with one of her dogs, the first being in Quebec in 2007 with "Winter" CH Amberwood Winter Wonderland CD SH WCX VC; Am CD SH WCX CCA. After the National, Butch added a CH and CD to his name, making him CH Sterre Badlands Outlaw CD JH WCI; Am JH. j. Henric Frykstand, Owner/Breeder/Handler Shelly Blom, Frank McArthur (President Maritime Golden Retriever Club) 11

Congratulations to everyone who works their Goldens in multiple venues and kudos to the breeders of the dogs who allow us to do so. Our Golden Retrievers are a wondrous, versatile breed. Because they were developed as hunting dogs, to work as a partner with their owners, they should be ready- made for excelling in any venue. It is their instinctual desire to please and to work as a team that allows them to be capable of so much. The Nan Gordon Memorial Trophy is awarded, to recognize those dogs that can switch from one venue to another, without missing a beat. It has been said to me that this trophy is at least as prestigious as winning BOB at the National, maybe even more so! The fact that it has only been awarded fourteen times in the last thirty years certainly confirms that it is a significant honour to be listed on the trophy. The 2014 Golden Retriever Club of Canada National Specialty is planned for July 30 th to August 3 rd at Kempville, Ontario. Get training!
