14 th Afghan National Specialty Show Judge: Jaime Ganoza Critique With thanks to AHCV and Alan Rogers for provision and permission for publication of this critique From The Afghan Hound Club of Victoria Correction to the 14th National Show results Unfortunately there has been an error in the 14th National Show results published in AffAirs and in the National Supplement. The Official result sheet and the critique show Khandhu Desert Storm as obtaining 5th place in the Junior Dog Class. It has been brought to the Club s attention, and reviewing the National Video confirms this, that Tyga Rainbow Of Jhanzi(Imp NZ) was actually placed 5th. We cannot explain how the error occurred, and the AHCV apologies for any distress this has caused. From Jaime Ganoza First of all I want to thank the organizers for inviting me to judge such an important and well put together show. I would also like to thank the exhibitors that I believe came from all over the country allowing me to see a whole picture of the Breed in Australia. As I said at the Presentation Dinner, I found quality in both sexes and for me this is important. In my overall picture of the breed I found an important number of heads with under jaws that were not that good. There were many dogs with missing teeth mainly in the puppy classes, which is something that needs to be considered. I also found good eye shape and colour in most of the dogs. Length of necks, shoulders, chests and fronts in my opinion are the strongest part of the Australian Afghans. I was very pleased when I went over the dogs in the front assembly. Movement, in my concern, is another strength in the breed. Fifty percent of the dogs I judged were not only sound and balanced but had a smooth effortless spring with very good reach and drive. The most consistent classes in this department were the Australian Bred Dogs and the Open Dogs and in bitches the Junior and Intermediate classes. I must say that I found beautiful dogs in other classes as well. I found soft top lines and sloping top lines in the stack or in action in quite a few nice dogs. I saw very few sickle hocks but a quite few weak hocks in different classes. Last but not least, I must say that I was very impressed with the friendly and sporting attitude of the exhibitors. I believe that this has been an important key to the success achieved by Australian Afghans over all these years My individual critiques of the classes are as follows: DOGS Minor Puppy Dog 1 st Furbari Inka Conqueror - Big red mask puppy, nice head, short neck, high shoulders, good top line and at this age is over angulated in the rear. Critique of Willem Buitenkamp General impressions of my judging on the 37th Specialty Show of the Afghan Hound Club of Victoria First of all a sincere thanks to the board of the Club for the invitation to judge and to all exhibitors who exhibited their Afghan Hounds on this Specialty Show. I was really pleased with the number of dogs entered. I also would like to thank Liz and Andy Smith, my ring - and assembly steward; they assured a smooth and well running judging. The big, round ring in the Cope-Williams vinery (congratulations to those who found this place!) worked very well and the dogs could be optimally shown. Although the weather gods were not quite co-operative, I believe that the Afghans did not suffer from the rather wet day. I appreciate practised show habits in the countries where I judge but nevertheless, as a standard, I ask to show the dogs with a loose line. Afghans do not need to be pulled up, they show themselves and if the head is not carried proudly, it s a lack of -the important- general appearance. However, almost all of the entries did show themselves in the correct way; I was pleased to see that! Holding the tail up when presented is not necessary for me. The standard is clear: raised when in action and in my opinion, the top line with a low tail is just as nice. It loved to see the variety in age. I really appreciated to also see older dogs in the ring. Our eastern sight hounds are late-developers and when older, they usually show a lot more dignity and true Afghan expression. From my critiques one can extract the points, I see as important in an Afghan Hound but I would like to give some general impressions as well. I realise that the standard is a frame work and that it s up to judges to make their own interpretation but here it helps when one judges or knows other sight hound breeds as well. Quite a lot of sight hound standards are written in such a way that, what one breed can have, the other (related) breed should not have and this all for obvious reasons. We can think of an Afghan Hound and a Saluki or of a Sloughi and an Azawakh. Then the phrases: not too narrow skull or forefeet very strong and large for Afghans become meaningful. I found nice, short dogs with excellent bone and correct feet. Muscles could be stronger in many cases. In Europe there is a nice mix of showing and racing or coursing with Afghans, which might be the reason for some stronger musculature over there. Front and rear angulation was in most cases correct, although I found some true over-angulation in the rear. This creates non-stability and does not support a springy gait. In static balance, a perpendicular line from hipbone to ground, should go through the middle of the back feet, so we learned long ago. That is most efficient and ideal for an Afghan Hound. Bent of stifles developed however somewhat but should not be exaggerated. What should be forgotten in my opinion is to pull the hind legs far away, resulting in a (faulty) sloping back. I really liked most of the top lines; they went very nice from the occiput, over the neck to the back, loins and croup. Two remarks: I noticed quite some shoulders, although of sufficient length, laying too much forward and breeders should also pay attention to the croups. The standard requires the back falling slightly away to the stern. I saw too many croups more than slightly falling away. The angle should be a little bit more than 30 degrees to be optimal for the springy propulsion. The heads were correct and balanced, both in the relation length of muzzle and skull and the top line ratio of muzzle versus skull. The latter is important for having the occiput not in the neck but at the top back side of the skull. The eyes were in general nicely dark, had good shape and the correct eastern expression, although I found a lot more visible third eyelids as in Europe, which takes somewhat of the expression away. Jaws were strong and correct. I was told that Afghans who are missing teeth are not really punished in Australia. I noticed indeed missing teeth during my judging. One missing P1 or P2 is not a problem for me as long as the elements are big and strong, but missing (a lot) more, as seen in several dogs, should in my opinion be subject of more attention in the breeding. Yes, an Afghan can well survive without premolars and

maybe without some molars, but here the standard is indeed just the frame. A dog, as far as I m concerned, should in principle have 42 elements; a nice full mouth though. I found most of the dogs having a smooth and springy gait with a high style of order and proud carried heads and that with loose lines. Wonderful to see the Afghans move that way. Here they clearly showed that they are the king of dogs. You might have noticed that I prefer the not too fast movement because I think that in this way the required action can be shown optimally, there is harmony and the dog has time to find the dynamic balance. I would like to conclude with saying that I enjoyed seeing so many excellent Afghan Hounds in such a wonderful scenery. I consider it as a big advantage that judges from other continents are frequently invited in Australia because that allows for great Afghan Hound discussions as I had as well with my judging colleague that weekend, Jaime Ganoza from Peru and many other people. That should, after all, result in keeping the breed level of the true Afghan Hound as high as possible. Willem Buitenkamp Belgium. DOGS Minor Puppy Dog 1. Furbari Inka Conqueror 7 months, pup with substance, nice head, correct eye, the skull could be a little more wider, good shoulder, well set on the stern, for the age a well developed brisket, good bone and feet, in movement still playful and loose, well carried tail. Puppy Dog 1. Malisco Tomake The Grade 9 months, good in proportions, correct head and neck, nice eye, chest has sufficient depth, ribs need more spring, good back and loin, tail well set, coat of good structure, goes nice through the ring but shows a juvenile, unstable movement, head well carried. 2. Aboukir High Lighter(AI) 10 months, correct built puppy dog, nice head, well laid shoulder and upper arm, good feet, ribs a little flat, correct croup, well bent stifle, good coat, weak topline, goes smooth but loose in front and rear.
