Welcome to Petali Martin Oppenheimer, Principal Welcome to the 23 rd Petali On Property Ram sale We are pleased to present our latest genetics for your inspection and want to discuss some of the current industry trends & news in the Petali sheep studs WOOL MARKET the new normal? The wool market has continued to move in our favour during 2017. The burning question: is this the new normal, with an EMI above 1500? Supply & Demand will answer this question with lower supply clearly in our favour currently. We know it is important to keep improving productivity, product quality & lower cost of production. Trends now are again for finer microns (especially 16 to 19), higher staple strength and better quality wools. Active wear, new fabrics & processors cash-flow demands have seen cardings and prem shorn wools easy to sell happy days. The demand for NM wool has increased with more supply, and premiums are increasing. To gain access to these premium markets this must be considered. 8 MONTH SHEARING working well We have experienced excellent demand for our 65-75mm merino ewes wool with 8 months growth. We are experimenting with different clip preparation and marketing options, at auction & direct. Clip preparation is less costly at these lengths and the sheep maintain better condition scores. BENCHMARKING This is a key part of our business success. When we enter data into Merinoselect and Lambplan it ranks our sheep with all the sheep on the Sheep Genetics databases. We also enter sires in Merino Sire Evaluation for better linkage to improve accuracy of our data. Our farm business data is also benchmarked with other grazing businesses, through Newsome Ag & Agripath. Results are below: PETALI GROSS MARGINS 2016/17 GM/DSE GM/Ha Merino ewe x White Suffolk ram (Lambs) $44 $510 (Lambs group average) $25 Merino ewe x Merino ram (Fibre) $40 $465 (Fibre group average) $27 Angus cow x Angus Bull (Beef Breeding) $37 $429 (Beef Breeding group average) $40 A key take home message from the enterprise benchmarking is: The best performing lamb flocks have a significant wool income The best performing wool fibre flocks have a significant lamb/sheep trading income GENETIC PROGRESS pushing the limits MERINOS: Greater selection for more early growth, fleece weight, more fat and muscle. WHITE SUFFOLKS: Greater selection for more early growth and muscle, with moderate fat. Our breeding philosophy is to keep it simple and focus on a few key traits. In both our Poll Merinos and White Suffolks we are using the best young sires that we can find and turning them over quickly. The genetic gains mean that sires over 3 years of age can be out of date. MORE GENOMIC TESTING Every year we are testing a bigger percentage of our ram weaners with DNA Genomic tests. The main advantages are earlier access to ASBVs, Poll tests in the merinos & EQ for all our sheep. You will see more of the blue double helix symbol on the Sheep Genetics website with Petali sheep that have been tested. USING MORE RAM LAMBS AS SIRES We are using more ram lambs as sires. This means we are keeping less older rams and selling more top rams. Many of the rams for sale in 2018 were mated in autumn 2017. By using genomic testing we are able to pick top performance rams early, mate them with confidence, then sell them. It s a winwin. Ram lambs that are able to mate at 6 to 7 months of age will breed ideal lambs with early growth for you. MORE DOUBLE POLLS PP In our Poll Merinos that were Genomics tested in 2017, over 70% were double Polls PP. EATING QUALITY EQ - flavour, juiciness, tenderness Eating Quality is one of the new mega-trends in the red meat industry and lamb is well positioned to take advantage. Lamb has had a good reputation for EQ in recent years. Long gone are the little fatty lambs as the modern, growthy, leaner lambs dominate production. But beware the example of Pork with too much emphasis on growth and lean meat yield, resulting in a dry, tough, poor eating experience. Intramuscular Fat (IMF) & Shear Force (SF5) are key traits that will deliver EQ (plus MSA grading). IMF is a measure of the chemical fat % in the loin muscle of a lamb and is often referred to as marbling. IMF has been shown to have a significant impact on the flavour, juiciness, tenderness and overall likeability of lamb meals. Rams with more positive IMF ASBVs produce lambs with higher IMF. SF5 is a measure of the force or energy required to cut through the loin muscle of lamb after 5 days of ageing. The SF5 ASBV is reported in deviations of kilograms of force. Rams with more negative SF5 ASBVs produce lambs with more tender meat. White Suffolks and Merinos can have good IMF & SF5 ASBVs, but as always, selection is critical. We know that Growth and Muscle are the big traits for $ returns, but EQ is a must watch. All the best for 2018 and thank you for your support. 2 3

Petali Poll Merinos Flock 60 1279 OJD Monitored Negative MN3 Accredited Brucellosis Free Footrot Free declared MERINOSELECT registered Full pedigree & performance recorded Annual program for Petali Poll Merinos 2018 January Wean lambs: measure stud lambs body weight, 6 in 1 vaccine B12, drench, draft ram & ewe lambs Genomic TSU sample top 100+ ram lambs 650 Poll Merino Ewes Average micron: 17.2 (Adult) 15.2 (Hogget) Mothering up & tagging lambs Aims: To breed balanced plain bodied Poll Merino genetics that produce heavy fleece weights of elite fibre plus high weaning rates of lambs with early growth at low cost of production. They do not require mulesing. Main Selection Traits: Weather proof white crimpy wool High fleece weights High weaning rates Less breech wrinkle & dag More early growth More genetic fat More genetic muscle Better Worm Resistance & Resilience Benefits: Profitable enterprise, Cash flow positive with more wool & lamb sales, can be shorn with 6, 8 or 12 months growth Naturally polled sheep for safer handling & mechanical sheep handlers/drafters Sheep with early growth require less feed, water & management Less chemical treatments used No mulesing required History: Petali Merino Stud was established in 1966 (by Martin s parents Herbert & Jillian) with one third of the Mirani Stud (est. 1932 by Martin s grandfather AS Nivison), descendants from the Ohio flock (est.1868 by Martin s great-great grandfather Abraham Nivison). Originally Tasmanian blood, introductions since have been from productive fine/medium bloodlines. Sheep Classers & Selection: During the 1980 s objective measurement using raw data was used in selection. In 1991 Petali commenced a new breeding program with Dr Jim Watts as stud classer until 1997 and Dr Paul Swan consulting from 1996 until 2001. Mr Rob Russell was stud classer from 2001 to 2013. Genetic progress since 1991 has been significant and resulted in Petali being a leading productive fine merino flock. Accelerated genetic gain since 2001 has been a result of the adoption of Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBV) technology and involvement in MLA s Merino Validation Project from 2002-2005. Now Genomic testing is aiding early selection & use of ram lambs, older sires are not required. Matesel is used to optimise genetic gains & minimise co-ancestry. Poll Merinos: Commenced in 1997, with the original merino stud 503054 now discontinued and all sheep since 2007 have been registered under Petali Poll Merino flock number 601279. Petali Poll Merino Genetic Trends Below are averages for the entire 2016 drop MORE FLEECE WEIGHT 2016 average YCFW + 8.0% MORE FAT 2016 average YFAT 0.49mm MORE STAPLE LENGTH 2016 average YSL + 5.3 mm Australian Sheep Breeding Values Definitions GROWTH & FERTILITY YWT Yearling Body WEIGHT (kg) or GROWTH Rams with higher YWT ASBVs produce progeny that grow faster & are heavier at yearling weight. YFAT Yearling FAT Depth (mm) Rams with more positive FAT ASBVs produce progeny that are fatter. Fat is positively associated with higher reproduction rates, greater lamb & weaner survival. Ewes also lose less weight when nutrition is restricted. YEMD Yearling Eye MUSCLE Depth (mm) Rams with more positive EMD ASBVs will produce progeny that have more muscle, independent of weight, plus higher lean meat yields. Muscle is positively associated with worm resistance, higher staple strength, higher body condition & more twins. FIBRE YCFW Yearling Clean FLEECE WEIGHT (%) Rams with higher YCFW ASBVs produce progeny that will produce more wool fibre. YFD Yearling FIBRE DIAMETER (um) Rams with more negative YFD ASBVs produce progeny which produce a lower fibre diameter wool fibre. YSL Yearling STAPLE LENGTH (mm) Rams with more positive YSL ASBVs produce progeny that will produce longer wool fibres. YSS - Staple Strength (N/Kt) Rams with more positive YSS ASBVs produce progeny that have higher N/kt. WELFARE & COST PWEC Worm Egg Count (%) Note PWEC is used as this is the age when tested. Rams with more negative WEC ASBVs produce progeny who have a higher genetic potential to resist worm burdens. WEC ASBV s estimate an animal s genetic ability for carrying worm burdens - a combination of being genetically less likely to pick up & host worms (resistant) & being able to cope immunologically with worm burdens (resilient). WEC ASBVs are expressed as a % relative to a mob count of 500 epg. EBWR - Early BREECH WRINKLE Estimates the breech wrinkle score for animals at lamb marking. This is an extremely important trait to access NM market segments. Other traits are measured or scored at Petali including Breech Cover & Dag. VALE HERBERT OPPENHEIMER 8.2.1930 1.5.2017 Herbert Alexander Oppenheimer passed away on 1st May 2017, aged 87 years. Born in Berlin, Germany, the only son of Dr Martin and Cacilie Alexandra Oppenheimer who emigrated to South Africa in 1936 via Holland. They were considered Stateless. Herbert s childhood was spent in Cape Town, South Africa, then attended boarding high school at Port Elizabeth. His parents divorced and his mother then married Ernest Oppenheimer (no relation). After finishing school he worked for two years as a learner farmer in the Karoo region with merinos, persian lamb, cattle, cropping and irrigation. Then to Grootfontein Agricultural College, Middleburg, where he was one of only a few English speaking students, and the classes were mostly taught in Afrikaans. In May 1952 Herbert started a two year long, sheep and wool education: Australia: A jackeroo at FS Falkiner s famous Boonoke Merino Stud, Deniliquin NSW. New Zealand: Completed a six month wool classing diploma at Massey Agricultural College (now University), Palmerston North. USA: Working with Debouillet dual purpose merinos (Delaine x Rambouillet) at AD Jones ranches at Roswell and Tatum in New Mexico. England: Classing wool in wool stores at Bradford and on the London docks. It was during a holiday break in Australia that he met the sister of a fellow Boonoke jackeroo, Peter Nivison, at Mirani. Herbert & Jillian Nivison became engaged to be married in 1954. Herbert Oppenheimer pictured in 1960, during shearing at the Mirani woolshed. Herbert returned to South Africa and started sheep classing jobs, with the intention of working full time on a large property in the Karoo, in which his family had a share-holding. This did not eventuate as the property was sold and Herbert and Jillian instead settled in Australia at Petali in 1955, following their wedding. They had four children, Alexandra, Melanie, Martin & Caroline. Herbert established the Petali Merino Stud in 1966, with wife Jillian, with one third of the Mirani Stud (Jillian s portion of her father AS Nivison s stud). Herbert and Jillian also established a Southdown meat sheep stud, and a Poll Hereford beef cattle stud in the 1960 s. Herbert was a steward at the RAS Sydney Show and Walcha Show, President of Walcha Rotary and Founding President of the Walcha Historical Society. Herbert managed Petali until 1972, when he and Jillian separated. He then owned two properties at Goulburn NSW, and then half of Coronet Peak Station at Queenstown NZ with second wife Paula, before finally settling in Hamburg, Germany, with his third wife Traute in 1982. They lived happily together until 1st May 2017. We remember Herbert as a gentle man, an unlikely farmer, who survived many challenges. He was always aware of history and proud of his family. Herbert and Jillian Oppenheimer established the Petali Merino Stud in 1966. Pictured in 1960, the year they set a world record wool price. 32
