Puppysm program. The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppysm is an exciting new program designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppysm Program is an incentive program for loving dog owners who have taken the time to take their puppies through a basic training class. You'll attend a 6 week puppy/basic training class taught by an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator. Your instructor will administer the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test at the end of the course. Upon passing the test, you'll get an application to send to AKC for enrollment in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program. All dogs are welcome to participate in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program including purebreds and mixed breeds. The puppy class is for puppies 12 weeks to 5 months of age (unless a toy breed) and has had at least their second distemper/parvo combo vaccine. As the puppies get old enough, they are expected to continue to update their vaccinations, and bring proof to class. This is a six week course. Please do not bring your dog to the first class. Beginner Obedience: In the beginner s class, your dog will learn to: sit and stay on command, heel at your side when walking on leash, lay down on command, come when called on leash. The class will also help you prepare for the Canine Good Citizens test which is offered to you at no additional cost on the last night of class. Intermediate Obedience Class: In the intermediate class, your dog will learn to: polish the skills learned in beginner s class, stand for examination, heel at your side with attention on and off leash, come when you call off leash, complete the figure 8 exercise, and master the left and right finishes.
Dogs must have been through at least one BKC beginner s class to enroll in this class. If there is a question as to whether or not a student from the beginner s class should move on to the intermediate class, the decision is left to the recommendations of the beginner s class instructor. A dog may enter the intermediate class if the intermediate instructor agrees, such as a person/dog that has taken classes elsewhere, or has been trained at home. Usually the first night the instructor will evaluate the skill level. Dogs must have current vaccinations for distemper/parvo combination and rabies, plus we highly recommend the bordetella vaccination. Intermediate Obedience class lasts 9 weeks. Conformation Class: Tips and suggestions for competing in Breed Shows. No Registration, fees to be paid per session. Open Class: Beginner Open Class for those who have completed Novice-level training. This class teaches all facets of Open Class at an entry level. Suggested training for those who are considering showing at Open Level. ***To qualify for the Member rate, you must be approved at a BKC meeting prior to the offering of classes. You may join the Brainerd Kennel Club at any time by submitting the completed application form (Form can be found on website www.bkcdogs.org) along with membership dues. You will be notified when approved as a member. Note: If you take a class on occasional basis, cost is $10 per class, paid to instructor on the same day Canine Good Citizen Test Results AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program is a certification designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community.
