We have an exciting last quarter in store for you. As you may know, this happens to be a very important time of the year for adoptions, spays and neuters and cruelty neglect complaints. From October 2009 through January 4, 2010, we are partnering with the Iams Company for Iams Home 4 the Holidays. During this worldwide campaign, thousands of cats and dogs will find homes for the holiday season. Please help us with this initiative by either adopting a beautiful dog or cat from the Humane Society, or encouraging friends and family to consider adopting a homeless pet. In addition, you may want to consider buying an adoption certificate as a holiday gift or even a bag of cat or dog food for someone struggling to feed their loving family pet. Although cat season will come to an end in the fall and winter months ahead, we need your continued support to help to control the free roaming feral cat populations in your neighborhood or city! One way to get involved is to help us celebrate National Feral Cat Day on October 16th. You can make a difference in the cat overpopulation problem by helping us spay or neuter a feral (wild) cat. It only costs us $10 to neuter a male cat, and $25 to spay a female cat. Please consider making a small donation to our TNR (trap, neuter, release) program so that we can proactively end the euthanasia of community cats! As winter is approaching, it is hard to imagine that some of your neighbors will be keeping their dogs and cats outside. Along with the bitterly cold weather comes a enormous influx of cruelty & neglect calls. While responding to each and every call, our Humane Agents requires all kinds of specialized equipment to help rescue animals in distress. Your financial support will ensure that we are properly outfitted to rescue animals in need this season! Soggy Doggies at Splash Moraine Waterpark Tuesday, September 8th was a wonderfully wet day for the Humane Society volunteers and all who attended Splash Moraine s Soggy Doggy Day. The event, which ran from 5:00 to 7:30pm, drew approximately 300 people and almost 250 water-loving dogs. Both the children s pool and the enormous wave pool were full of happy dogs and their owners wading, swimming, splashing, and determinedly retrieving soggy tennis balls. Almost every breed and mix was well represented. Park staff were on hand to help with breakaway dogs, making this an incredibly fun and safe event for all. 2 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Brian Weltge Splash Moraine generously opens its gates to well behaved dogs and their owners twice a year, once at the beginning and once at the end of the summer pool season. The Dayton Art Institute partnered with the Humane Society of Greater Dayton to celebrate the museum s 90th Anniversary and its history with animals on the museum grounds. This partnership inspired Artful Animals, a successful fundraising event in early August. The Humane Society prepared for the event by creating Pawde Monet artwork with several adoptable animals. The artwork was framed through generous donations by Lamplighter Frames, Deck the Walls, and Patterson-Chase Co. Pet First Aid Classes at the Humane Society Pet-related emergencies can occur suddenly and without warning. Knowing what to do in the initial moments can be critical to your pet s life. We are happy to offer an opportunity for local pet owners to gain those skills and help save their pets in an emergency. The Dayton Chapter Red Cross has partnered with the Humane Society of Greater Dayton to offer Pet First Aid classes! This exciting initiative gives pet owners the confidence and skills necessary to tend to unexpected emergencies until they can get their pet to a veterinarian or emergency care center. Many people came out to enjoy a gallery hunt at the museum, two hands-on art projects for kids, adoptable pets from the Humane Society, raffle prizes, and plenty of beautiful pieces of art. Thanks to the help of many volunteers and local artist, Bo Tamaki, the Artful Animals event raised over $1,000 for both the Humane Society and the Dayton Art Institute! Each class will cover topics such as emergency preparedness, performing CPR and rescue breathing, first aid procedures, administering medications, stocking a pet first aid kit, tending to all types of injuries, and caring for sudden illnesses. The fee for the Pet First Aid class is $45 per person, which includes the Red Cross Cat or Dog First Aid Guide, DVD, and refreshments. Reference guides are also available to provide quick answers to questions about caring for family dogs and cats. Classes will begin January 2010. Fall 2009 Adoption Success Story: Joker & Sally Joker and Sally came into our shelter last November. Since that time, staff and volunteers at the Humane Society have formed a soft spot in their hearts for these two coonhounds. The pair, along with two other coonhounds, originally came from an extremely abusive, neglectful home in Indiana. Their lives were spent outdoors without adequate food, veterinary care, or love. Fortunately, all four dogs were rescued. The coonhounds were temporarily placed in an Indiana animal shelter, and finally made their way to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. From day one at the Humane Society, Joker and Sally always appreciated the care they received by staff and volunteers. Months went by, however, without being adopted. It was clear that they were losing hope for a better life. All of that has changed now, as they are both in wonderful adoptive homes for the first time in their lives! Joker, now Jake, has gone from fighting for a meal to riding in the car for a special trip through McDonald s for hamburgers. Sally, now Circ, has been practicing her swimming with her new sister coonhound in a nearby creek on hot afternoons. Sally has even taken her first vacation to the Outer Banks of North Carolina! Fortunately for the pair, their new owners are friends, so they will continue to see one another. We could not be happier for them and wish them both a terrific new life! All you have to do is purchase a gift card from HSGD and reload the card with additional value when you shop at Kroger. Wine, Washes, & Wet Noses! It was a bright and beautiful September afternoon at A Taste of Wine in Miamisburg. Crowds began to gather, not just for a delicious wine tasting and appetizers, but also to pamper their pooches! Wine, Washes, & Wet Noses was an exciting fundraising event to benefit the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. The event, in collaboration with several fabulous local businesses, was a complete success. Square One Salon and Spa supplied their professional hair stylists to wash the dogs, giving them their own personal spa day. A Taste of Wine generously offered a wine (and beer) tasting extravaganza for owners, as well as incredible raffle prizes such as an Italian wine-tasting dinner. TJ Chumps provided delectable appetizers for guests, like Fido s Fiesta Bowl of Nachos. Great Miami Outfitters, neighbor to A Taste of Wine, generously offered their patio space for the sylists to wash and dry all of the dogs. Friends of the Humane Society provided tasty treats as an after-bath snack. All guests were sent home with a bag of goodies, such as gift certificates and dog bowls. By the end of the day, stylists bathed 108 dogs, raising more than $1,600 for Humane Society programs! The appetizers and wine tasting contributed $429, for a grand total of $2097.96! Honoring & Remembering Honoring and remembering loved ones is an important way to share feelings and heal the heart. At the Humane Society, you can show your love for family and friends, people or pets, through memorial donations or by placing an engraved brick in our memorial garden. We will list all memorial contributions from July 1 to December 31 in our Winter 2010 newsletter. If you are interested in making a special donation or purchasing a memorial brick, please call (937) 262-5923. Dayton Area Rabbit Network Needs your Help Since 2007, the Dayton Area Rabbit Network (DARN), in cooperation with the Humane Society of Greater Dayton, works to ensure that all house rabbits live happy, healthy indoor lives through education and volunteer efforts. DARN is a non-profit organization. We house rabbits awaiting adoption at the HSGD facility, and we also foster rabbits in DARN members homes around the Miami Valley. As the third most surrendered/abandoned pet after cats and dogs, the rabbits rescued by HSGD and DARN have reasons to hope for better lives. In the past year the rabbits received their own room at the facility; the room was recently repainted and custom rabbit condos installed, providing more comfort for the bunnies. DARN now provides Oxbow pellets, Oxbow hay, and fresh vegetables daily, plus volunteers have taken over the daily cleaning of bunnies condos, allowing HSGD staff to focus on other animals needs. Additionally, all rabbits are spayed or neutered before they are adopted to avoid further abandoned bunnies. Of course, all of these efforts take funding. We have received generous donations from our members and new bunny parents, but if you would like to help us, please consider contributing Oxbow Bunny Basic T (pellets), Oxbow Timothy Hay, wood stove pellets (used for litter available at Lowes and Tractor Supply), Care Fresh, and exercise pens (from 24" to 36" high). WSKrs Group: For the Sake of our Cats WSKrs (We Support Kitties!) is the Humane Society of Greater Dayton s newest volunteer focus group. You may already know that the Humane Society generally houses more cats than any other species and accepts all cats. While cats don t require walks, they still have very specific needs, and they are rather complex creatures. Socialization, health issues, body language, grooming, training these are all critical to preparing kitties for successful adoptions into forever homes. WSKrs will address various cat/kitten issues and will assist HSGD as needed with first-class cat care and development of programs for cat owners. Issues may include: Socialization of healthy and sick cats and kittens Grooming of HSGD cats, especially trimming of claws and fur mats Preparation of cats for adoption cage placement Expansion of foster base (with Janie Davis, foster care coordinator) Safe Cat issues indoor/outdoor, hazards, spay/neuter Networking for discussion and advice Fundraising, as necessary, for specific cat needs play cages, etc. The WSKrs group is led by Sue Taylor and anchored by several other long-time cat volunteers. Our group will typically meet on the last Monday of every month at 6:30 PM. The next meeting will be at Marion s Piazza (Patterson and Shroyer Road) on Monday, October 19. Meetings will last about an hour. We hope for a great turnout all are welcome, whether or not you are an official HSGD volunteer at this time. Georgia Huber Boulevard Rascal Georgia Huber has finally received the attention she so rightly deserves just for being adorable. Vistors to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton are now welcomed into the drive by Georgia s name on a bright green street sign. The HSGD drive, formerly Katey Huber Way, is now Georgia Huber Boulevard. Every year at Pet Afflaire, the right to name the Humane Society drive is auctioned off to the highest bidder. This year, Georgia s mom, Teresa Huber, was the lucky winner. Georgia is very excited to represent the boxer breed this year, just as her sister Katey did last year. Congratulations to Georgia s new fame! Volunteer Spotlight: Jamie Fries The Humane Society of Greater Dayton would like to honor Jamie Fries as our volunteer of the quarter! Jamies has been volunteering with HSGD for over four months. Jamie is a dedicated volunteer, assisting with several programs. She socializes the adoptable dogs, works at the front desk during peak hours, helps at special events, assists with pet therapy and the volunteer mentor program, and fosters puppies and kittens. When Jamie isn t working as an Associate Professor at Sinclair Community College, she is generously donating her time to help the animals at the Humane Society. I signed up after I adopted my dog, Katie, at the HSGD in January, out of gratitude for what a great dog she is, and for the facility that brought her to me, Jamie said. The world is hugged by the faithful arms of volunteers. ~Everett Mámor Jamie dedicates several hours each week to helping the Humane Society. I love working with the dogs, especially the ones that need a little extra TLC, she said. I also really enjoy working at the front desk. It is a genuine pleasure to be around people who have dedicated themselves to giving animals better lives, and watching clients and animals find one another. We are looking for dedicated voluteers to commit to helping at our new Dayton Mall store. The Humane Society is in need of volunteers to assist MeowZa staff with dayto-day store operations. Tasks will include cleaning cat cages, socializing with the cats and kittens in the store, and assisting customers. This is a long-term volunteer committment, and opportunities will primarily be in the evenings or on weekends.
