Carnegie breeder Peter Knott has the litter, which has three dogs and five bitches, from the 2012 Warragul Oaks winner, Especially (August 2010 Brett Lee x Special Sign), whose dam is by Exceptional x Semaphore (Placard x Honcho Whiz). Especially is from a handy litter of five named, which included Group 2 winner, Al Moran. Her contribution to the litter s success, was 73 starts for 20 wins and 16 placings. She won five times over 515 metres at Sandown (29.53), where she also won over 595 metres (3.35), three times over 525 metres at The Meadows (30.06), twice over 500 metres at Bendigo (28.10), twice over 460 metres at Warragul (26.04), where she also won over 400 metres (22.73), twice over 480 metres at Horsham (27.15) and twice over 390 metres at Shepparton (22.20). She has six named offspring on file, from her very handy first litter, which produced, Especially Shiraz, Go Commando, La Vagabond, Mercedes Red, Sulzanti Litter MERBEIN SOUTH breeder Jamie Quinlivian has our final litter for review this week, which has eleven pups by the very well bred, under-rated stud prospect, Sulzanti (September 2013 Magic Sprite x Scissor Queen). The eight dogs and three bitches, are from the well bred, successful producer, Rustic Reeta (September 2010 Pure Octane x Wolfie), whose dam is by Bombastic Shiraz x Flickering Lady (Fortified Speed* x Goddess Of Fire). She is from a litter of three named and was the only winner, with two wins and five placings from her 19 starts. She won over 390 metres at Ballarat (23.12) and 400 metres at Mt. Gambier (23.90). Success came quickly for her as a brood bitch and she now has an amazing record with her 18 named offspring, from her first two litters, producing 17 individual winners, with the only non winne, placed five times to date. Her first litter, whelped in June 2014, produced, Assaulted Pepper, Bear s Gold, Bessie Belle, Jacqui Blax, Monster Foxy, Signal Peak, Silverband Falls and Sweet Savage, all winners, who have won 109 races to date. In January 2016 she whelped her second litter, by Banjo Boy, which produced, Banjo Bonito, Banjo Boss, Black Talon, Bushini, Full Loop, Glory Fire, Jungle Jacqui, Pretoria Son, Prophetless and Serene Machine, who have already won 27 races between them and they have just turned two. Rustic Reeta appeals to me as a likely starting place if you are looking for a foundation brood bitch. Her own pedigree is very strong and she has added to it with success from her first two litters, by Cape Hawke and Banjo Boy, which have nine bitches between them, and this Sulzanti litter includes three bitches. Great place to start if you are looking to produce your own breeding line. - 9 -

Aston Trivett January 2007 x Miss Spicy Lidaro Shifty June 2006 x Primal Tears Scott No Wives October 2007 x Action Time Ticabond July 2006 x Debenture Wicker Man May 2006 x Saltram. Bond THIS week s sons at stud feature, features the beautifully bred sire Bond (May 2003 Brett Lee x Thai Magic), whose dam is by Grove Whisper* x Lauren s Desire (Brother Fox x Genuine Replica). He was from a handy litter, which included Casual Lilly, Freddy Magic, Insprationlee, Leetyla and Spalding. On the track his short but brilliant career, cut short by injury, shows him having 18 starts for 11 wins and one placing. He won five times over 520 metres at Wentworth Park (29.96), four times over 472 metres at Bulli (26.05) and twice over 515 metres at Sandown where he set a track record 29.38 in 29.38 when he won the Sandown Shootout. He then ran 29.41 winning a heat of the Melbourne Cup before finishing fifth from box two, beaten 2.25 lengths in the final won by Closing Argument and did not race again. I always thought he was under-rated as a sire, however he is still on the registered sires list, so there must be straws available, despite him having passed on prematurely, many years ago now. His current top rated offspring, according to greyhound-data.com are: Mr. Metz June 2007 x Iza Tora. Reign Over Me June 2006 x Primal Tears. Girl Leg (NZ) March 2006 x Puzzling. Topline Doovee February 2007 x Rocket Gear. Oh Watta Nite March 2009 x She s So Pretty. Mr. Bonzales February 2006 x Suzy Ganzalas. Oakfront O Seven* May 2007 x Colla Glen. Keroma On Seven (March 1007 x Khalia Keroma. Aston Trivett January 2007 x Bond. Hot Price January 2007 x Hall s Turbo. - 12 - A little history on the Shootout, from Sandown s Michael Floyd From the moment I started at Sandown Park there was one race that got the blood pumping more than any other. I started at Sandown Park in 2005. I had a bit of experience in thoroughbred racing but, if I m honest, knew little about greyhound racing other than the fact that eight dogs run fast around the track. Except for one race that is that, where four dogs run really fast around the track. The Shootout is often billed as the speed championship of Australia. The concept is simple with just four dogs in the field, there s less chance for interference which gives those dogs that lack speed at box rise time to steady, find their stride and show what they can do. Four of the fastest canines in the land racing head to head. Oh, and the winner gets the prize. All of it. It s the only race I m aware of any code where the winner takes the entire purse. The Shootout started back in 1998 as a paid entry race. If you thought you had the fastest chaser in the country and you were prepared to stump up $5000, you could prove to everyone you re right. In that first year, just three sets of connections forked out the entry fee with the brilliant WA sprinter Reggimite claiming the $40,000 prize. Whisky Assassin won the Shootout in 2004 and people around the club were still talking about the race when I started in March the following year. So naturally it was a race that I was keenly looking forward to later that year, and it didn t disappoint! The connections of Bond, a greyhound that had burst onto the scene almost 12 months earlier running scintillating times around NSW, put up the entry fee despite their charge only having the one start in the preceding four months a well beaten fifth at Wentworth Park. There was plenty of support by punters for the big 36kg black dog, and it was well founded. As is typical of the winner of the race, Bond took a few strides to balance up and then exploded to the lead, extending his advantage at every post to stop the clock in 29.38 a new track record. The buzz around the big crowd that night had me hooked. Not just on the race, but the sport. It was as exciting a moment as you d see on a race track and I m sure any newcomer to greyhound racing that was there that night left a convert to the sport. The crowd was already abuzz as the field headed to the boxes, escorted by the cow girl promotional girls to the sound track of The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. Sure it was a bit gimmicky, but it was fun, exciting, and different to anything the sport offered anywhere else. The format has also been embraced in other parts of the world. Mick Floyd

Initially, the Association has a pre-dominant Eastern States focus but gradually moved toward a true national focus, changing its name to the Australian Greyhound Racing Association in the early 1970's. The Association played a significant role in the progression of rules, spnsorship and the early coordination of PayTV Rights negotiation. Today, the Australian Greyhound Racing Association comprises in its membership each of the principal racing bodies in Australia as follows: Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club ( Albion Park, Queensland ). Darwin Greyhound Association of the Northern Territory ( Winnellie Park, Northern Territory ). Greyhound Racing SA ( Angle Park, South Australia ). Friends of Greyhound Adoption Programs (Australia) http://www.facebook.com/groups/144096608971567/ Some sounds advice from a recently joined FoGAPer with vast experience with greyhounds. (they know who they are :-) ) As a greyhound owner, trainer and breeder for over 25 years, and a newcomer to this Facebook page, I am astounded at some of the questions asked, and misinformation relayed, usually with good intent. Firstly, I am not suggesting anyone is asking stupid questions, there is no such thing as one, but some of the questions raised relating to some of the most basic things, suggests that there is either too much misinformation, or not enough correct information. Firstly, greyhounds are purpose bred. They are used and bred for what their bodies are designed for, to run and chase, fast. The length of their nose and tail, colour, size and conformation is basically irrelevant to their ability to the above purposes, hence they have a genetic soundness, and a temperament that hasn t been compromised. However, some of the things I ve been reading, I feel could potentially compromise the dog, particularly with people new to the breed. Prior to becoming a pet, your Greyhound has never been alone! This is the one key issue I believe is problematic for new adoptees, or people unfamiliar with the breed. They have been bred with and cared for by people in some cases who have 60-70 years of intimate knowledge of the breed! Greyhounds are with their mother anywhere from birth up to six weeks or three months, depending on how tolerant the broodbitch is. They are then reared with either their siblings or pups of the same age up until about 12 months old when they are broken in, even then they are still in the company of other dogs, but never alone! This continues on with spelling, pre-training and training, the dogs are never really alone. So, when they are adopted into a new home where they are in some cases the ONLY dog, so it is a totally foreign and unfamiliar environment. They are not shut down, they haven t been mistreated, they are not timid because they ve been abused, they have not been unloved, they have not been treated like robots, they have not been deprived of human contact, the have not list goes on and on and on. Add to this, they are not sad, bored etc etc etc. The lovely pictures you see of greyhounds on promotional material is exactly what a greyhound is, an adaptable, relaxed calm dog. They are like this at shows and expo s, markets etc, they are used to people and other dogs and noise and activity. Some are more outgoing than others, just like every species on earth, a quiet or timid dog does not automatically suggest it s been mistreated but the expectation it will be like this the day it is taken home is preposterous! Just because you re excited about your new pet, doesn t mean that the dog automatically feels the same way. They may not want to play with the new toy that you ve brought, they may not eat the food you give them, they may not relax for a few days, that doesn t mean they ve been deprived of playtime, or they ve been denied any excitement or fun in their life, they are adjusting. Greyhounds in the home - 25 - Zoomies aren t an exclusive trait of a retired, adopted, rehomed dog, they actually do this with their siblings, anytime from about 4 weeks old, give them time and they ll do it regularly. Greyhounds have had a life of routine, they know what happens they moment you walk in the kennel door, they know the routine backward. They know when it s emptying out time, work time, feed time, race day etc, and even when being moved into a new kennel, they settle very quickly into routine as they don t know any different, and are confident in the expectations of a racing kennel. They ve had a life of exercise, massages, hydrobaths, vet checks, trips in the car, trips to the races, being in a kennel where they feel contained and safe, first class food, rugs etc etc they want for nothing and they are content and happy. The moment they aren t indicates a potential problem that is addressed immediately by the trainer. Suddenly in a new domestic environment where every family member is in their face, taking photos, showing them around, feeling they somehow need to provide them everything that they may feel they ve lacked, can be overwhelming. Suddenly the routine is new, it can change from day to day, ie the owner has to work back late, suddenly dinner is later, the dog isn t let out as often to go to the toilet, it s by itself, maybe it seems disconnected but it s happy being by itself not fussed over, it s exercise routine being different and not as regimented, can be overwhelming. Some dogs crave attention and affection all the time, others seek it when they desire. This doesn t mean it will be like this forever, it takes time, and like people some dogs cope better with change. We need to stop putting human emotions into dogs. We need to stop feeling sorry for them and their previous life, in most cases it has been amazing. They ve been looked after around the clock and had 24/7 care, they ve done what their instinct and genetic disposition has allowed them to do. They haven t needed rescuing, all they need is someone with patience and dare I say, common sense to allow them to adjust at their speed, in their time, quietly and consistently. They need time and space to be left alone to settle, they need understanding. When the breed and the basic needs of the breed are understood, then anyone can enjoy what this wonderful breed has to offer. There is a wealth of knowledge out there, and on this page. There are people who have been in the sport for decades and are elated to know that the secret is out about how wonderful greyhounds can be, if only they are understood, and it s not that difficult, it just takes time and the correct information coming from credible sources, and this will preserve the integrity of the breed. DOGS TO FOLLOW Our weekly selection of greyhounds to follow, based on their breeding and recent performances Dogs to follow Windy Millar* UNMISTAKABLE Black dog, January 2016 Bella Infrared* x Outlandish. Owners: Step By Step Syn. Trainer: Harry Manolitis (Lysterfield South). Raced three times now for one placing but is sure to improve with experience. First start third 520 metres at Cranbourne 22 November, in maiden heat, then seventh in the semi final won by Samsonite on 29 November. Didn t race again until coming from box eight over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) 515 metres last Sunday, when fourth in the race won by Slingshot Hammer (29.79), beaten 9.29 lengths, which was a big ask. CAIRNLEA ROSIE Blk & Wh bitch, April 2015 Premier Fantasy* x Cairnlea Ellie. Owners: Lidpingers Syn. Trainer: Joseph Xerri (Merrimu). Lightly raced with just 15 starts to date for a win and seven placings. Placed three of last five starts, including 515 metres at Sandown (SAP), 18 March, when third from box four, beaten 1.31 lengths in a tight finish, behind Mepunga Kryan (30.29). Improving with experience and is nor far off another win. TAKING AIM Black dog, November 2015 High Earner x Miss Bel Air. Owner/Trainer: Glenn Rounds (Devon Meadows). Raced 11 times now for a win and five placings and has been consistent in recent starts without winning. Last start second, over 515 metres at Sandown (SAP) on 18 March, beaten 0.4 lengths in the race won by Star Of Magic (29.60). That run would have seen him win most other eligible races on the day so he was a bit stiff. Hasn t had much luck with box draws in his past five starts and is due for a change of luck.
