Judges Critrique Judge Mrs Pam Blay The Kennel Club of Jersey hosted a very successful Channel Islands Dog of the Year where I was very lucky to be invited to judge this prestigious competition. I had been disappointed last year when my proposed judging appointment had to be cancelled because of my accident, so was really looking forward to going back to Jersey to judge some of the best dogs on the scene at present. The Club had it very well organised with the obedience competition running in the morning and then the showdogs in the afternoon. There were four categories, Puppy of the Year, Dog of the Year, Veteran of the Year and Brace of the Year. The puppies and the adults were when split into groups and two from each group were chosen as finalists, which were then to be judged at the end of the day. First in came the Pastoral puppies and here my choices fell to Martel s Bearded Collie, Jupiter De Chester avec Majikcharms, in excellent coat & a strong topline which was held on the move with a good head carriage & tailset and he was joined by Cochrane s GSD, Windgunn Seize The Day, needed to settle but when he got into his stride you could see an excellent front extension. Next group to come in was the Hounds the two finalists were Le Brun s Walamadengie Flaunt It, a very mature Ridgeback with a good ridge & correct hindquarters, showed well & she was joined by Lawson s Whippet Alamayn Equinox Cassidy at Kipipiriking, this very elegant fawn dog was of a good size & very precise movement on lovely legs & feet. Toys were very strong in competition but finally I came up with Alsford s Pomeranian Thelbern Mr Goodman, in full coat, this dog was of a good size & very balanced, loved his head & expression and Symphorien s Regencylodge Roxelle at Rienmour, fawn with a lovely head & expression, moved out well with confidence & style. Only two in the Working puppy group but both worthy winners. Hutchinson & Lester s Leonberger, Lionscourt Fortissimo Dejerri, in full coat, this impressive dog has excellent bone & feet & a very masculine head & expression. Brouard s Alaskan Malamute, Dreamwolves J Adore, excellent example of the breed & can never be overlooked, again put down in excellent coat & condition. Terrier places went to Fletcher & Seedhouse s SBT, Granitangel Zirconia Pearl, super black baby with an excellent head & expression, correct body proportions & moved well for a youngster. She was joined by Marett s Cesky, Idefix Day Break at Gayteckels, liked his length of body, front construction & head carriage, moved well & in good coat. Another strong group was the Gundogs where my two finals places went to Sharpe s Kermouster Black Magic, workmanlike black bitch who is balanced & moved so well on well boned legs & feet. Cox s ESS, Petranella Jerseyboy at Tiroen, this quality boy is balanced & in good coat, in excellent condition & moved with a strong topline holding his well set tail correctly & a lovely head carriage. The final puppy group was the Utility with another two stars who you couldn t miss Walker s Tibetan Terrier, Araki Fuffer Tucker for Petwalk, this gold & white dog is quality, put down in excellent coat & condition, he has attitude & his movement is copybook, he made me smile which is always a good sign! Journeaux s Lhasa Apso bitch, Lady Excelsior, not a small bitch but full of quality, again excellent presentation, pretty head & a lovely front construction. After a short break, we moved on to the adult competition. The same system applied but as some of the puppies are now adults, they had also qualified in the adults too. The first group in was Pastoral my finalists were Boxall s Samoyed, Gemora Royal Rose, when she settled she was a good mover, excellent head & expression & put down in excellent coat & condition. Cullen s Jsy Ch Tonkory Xaminer, the Border Collie dog who is so typical of the breed, lovely head & expression, good ear carriage, excellent coat & condition, when he moves he holds his head correctly, keeps a strong topline & a well set & carried tail, well boned legs & feet, showed his socks off. Hounds paraded & from the first run round I was taken with Mottershaw & Officer s Afghan, Schumakays A Perfect Match for Elangeni, this black had wonderful head carriage, correct topline & more importantly a ring tail, missing from so many nowadays, lovely head & correct front construction, showed well. Marshall & Mottershaw s Saluki, Ulmarra Bollinger, this fawn was so sound in movement, excellent temperament, well shown to get the best from this quality boy, not an overlarge male, but so very balanced & from the top drawer. Toys were next to be assessed again a strong class but in the end my two finalists were Dale & Michel s Pekingese, Pekehuis Sorceror at Ksarina, fawn boy with an excellent head & expression, picks up heavy & moves with dignity yet purpose, a lovely showdog with attitude. Schofield s Rudoli Sunkissed, well balanced Pomeranian bitch of a lovely type, this quality girl has such a feminine expression with well set & carried ears, lovely coat & moved so well on good legs & feet. Working places were taken by the Rottweiler, Brouard s Botlierskop Heaven Sent, such a feminine bitch of good body proportions, excellent head & expression, well muscled & moved well. Coming back from the puppies was the Alaskan Malamute, Dreamwolves J Adore which took the other place here. Terriers was strong again with after a lot of deliberation I chose Ch/Jsy Ch Dobelands Silent Danger, b/w Smooth Fox Terrier with a split face & eye patch, this balanced dog is from lines I admire, so no wonder he appealed, plenty behind his tail which was carried well, well boned legs & feet, moved well. Kucza s Brazan Amber Pageant, excellent presentation on this Irish Terrier bitch, moved well, good body proportions, well set & carried tail, lovely head & expression.
The adult Gundogs were, as to be expected, very strong. Here it was a real tussle but it finally came down to Cox s Irish Setter, Jsy Ch Tiroen Too Hot to Handle, loved his size & shape, in excellent coat & condition, moved so well on well boned legs & feet, lovely head & expression. Ozanne s Briarlow s Asombrosa Del Lyntonridge, quality b/w who kept calling me back, now on checking I can see why! At Bath a couple of years ago she won best puppy bitch under me in breed! Grown into an excellent example of a Spanish Water Dog & has her sire s wonderful movement. Finally the Utility group Cooper s Jsy Ch Debeaux Russia Wiv Love at Forepaws, I might be wrong but I think I might have judged this Shih Tzu dog as a puppy when last over here & did him well. Gold & white with a beautiful head & expression, excellent presentation & handling, moved so soundly. Walker s Chanceinns Sir Gino avec Sifrason, again the excellent presentation I have come to expect from this kennel, moved so well & showed his socks off for he is quality & will never be overlooked. Veterans were next in. Here we had a class of 6 with the winner being Girard s cream & gold Shih Tzu, Forepaws Gift Of Gold, what an excellent bitch of nearly 9 who was as fit as a fiddle, in excellent coat but with that beautiful head & expression, moved so well covering the ground gracefully yet correctly. erve best veteran went to McFarlane s Australian Shepherd, Am Ch Briarbrooks Jack Be Quick, another I feel I judged as a youngster but wearing her age well, now 12 yet still looks a youngster, showed & moved well, in lovely coat with good body proportions. Four braces to compete for the Brace competition. Here I had no hesitation in presenting the award to Marshall & Mottershaw s well matched Salukis, presented as a beautiful pair with lovely colours which matched their handler s jacket, they are a credit to their owners. erve went to Smith & Ozanne s matching b/r Cockers, who showed & moved as one. We moved on to the Puppy Channel island Dog of the Year final with the 14 puppies coming in again, I shortlisted down & then moved these again to confirm to myself that I had the winners & without hesitation I called in two to have a final run round before awarding the purposeful English Springer Spaniel the award with the stunning Tibetan Terrier in reserve. I did the same again for The Channel Island Dog of the Year before bringing in for a further run the final two at the end of my judging stint, I just could not deny the oh so true Border Collie with the graceful Saluki in reserve. All that remains is to thank the Kennel Club of Jersey for their hospitality, the dinner & presentation ceremony in the evening certainly made it a day to remember. Thanks to all the exhibitors, whether they won or lost, for being such good sports & clapping right to the end of a long day.
