President s Corner Well it s been another 2 months! Time is flying for me. Kathy and I just got back from a wonderful vacation to Egypt. One of the most impressive places I ve ever been. The pups were safe at home with our dog/house sitter Paul. He wears them out! It is amazing that when we got home after 16 days away they were happy to see us but calm, relaxed, and definitely not frantic. We worry about them when we are away but its so reassuring to have someone you trust and who actually spends more time with them than we normally do (with work and all) to care for them. Makes the vacation even more enjoyable! It s been a busy time with the Goldens Only match in March, the Agility trials last weekend in April and the Awards banquet this eekend. The Independent Specialty is just around the corner! Hope everyone is doing all they want to! I ve had the challenge lately to be training an old dog and a young dog. Jo is 10 and we are working on Utility. She pretty much knows everything and has done well in the limited showing we ve done but no legs to show for it. I find myself not too motivated to show or have the title but I really enjoy working with her a few times a week. She has always been a worrier and unfortunately obedience at this level tends to be worrisome! (at least for me). There are so many ways to fail, that the pressure always seems high even if you think you are relaxed. On the other end of the spectrum is Boomer, a 3 year old male who loves each day as if it were the best ever. He has so much desire to be with me and please me (something Jo could have a little more of!!). He tries really hard but its been a challenge to find the best way to teach so that he really learns it. Jo picks stuff up so fast and then she s bored (or hungry), where Boomer has to have lots of repetition and we have to find a way to make that productive. Whoever it happens to be or whatever we re doing I sure try to be positive and upbeat. It s sometimes hard after a long day at work or if I m feeling stressed and preoccupied. I figure its best not to impose that on the dogs better to just sit and relax, give em a few pets, throw the bumper for them, or go for a walk. So I hope you all get out and enjoy your dogs, they can be a great form of therapy. Remember to be on the lookout for upcoming club functions and volunteer it s a great way to meet people and start having that feeling of being part of the club! Most of all have fun with your dogs! 2010 National Specialty Update I am pleased to tell you that we have selected trophies for this event. Stained glass artist Alison Desmarais has agreed to make all our trophies. The placement trophies for all classes in all events will be paw prints with the glass colors matching the ribbon colors for that class. The big trophies will be items like mirrors and picture frames with stained glass mosaic borders and mosaic planter holders. We think these will be unique items which will be treasured by the winners and are thrilled that Alison has agreed to undertake this assignment. We continue with fund-raising and are currently working on two major items. Kathy Bourland is heading up a photo contest; people can submit their pictures of Goldens (what else?) for a small fee per picture. These will be judged in various categories by a jury of non-mile Hi photographers. The pictures will be displayed at the national and the winner will get a full-page color ad in the Golden Retriever News. Details are still being firmed up, but you can start thinking about which pictures you d like to submit. The contest will be open nation-wide, so we should get a large selection of Goldens from across the country. For more details, please contact Kathy Bourland. The cookbook is nearing completion of the initial recipe gathering phase. Thanks to all who have already contributed recipes; it s not too late for the rest of you. You can email them to me at bbransta@lamar.colostate.edu or Susan Faulkner at hpgoldret@aol.com. In addition to people food, we re also looking for dog treats and remedies. Feel free to send as many recipes as you wish! Judging from what we ve already received, this should be a great cookbook even if you don t cook, you ll want the book for the dog treats and remedies! The 2010 National Committee can always use additional help. If you d like to be a part of this extravaganza but don t know where your talents could best be used, please contact me. We will have jobs which will be completed before the national and we will have jobs that occur only at the event itself. Whatever your time constraints are, there s a place for you. Barb Branstad General Chair 2010 GRCA National Specialty New Members Update At the March meeting we voted in several new members: Noelle Greene who owns an English Golden named Jasmine. She is interested in Junior Showmanship and obedience. Caroline and Keith Frankl are interested in conformation and agility with their dogs Liberty and Bentley. Jen and Brian Rullo are interested in all areas of dog competition. Randy and Chris Watson won Sugar Bear and Sacha (10 months old). Chris is an up and coming Junior Handler working with Clint Livingston and Diana Wilson. They are interested in conformation and obedience. Welcome! Please make a point of introducing yourselves to our new members at the next event and make them feel welcome! Puppy Referral Team Report Year End Puppy Referral Report Feb 10, 2009 to April 10, 2009 Total Inquiries Responses Sent 1 Questionnaires on File 2 Litters Listed 3 Pups Listed 4 Placed via Puppy Referral 77 53 3 5 5 1. Often several messages are exchanged with a single family. 2. Not included: those who returned questionnaires, but got pups elsewhere and/or did not follow through or return messages. 3. And ready for new homes between Feb 10 and April 10. 4. These litters were larger than 1 or 2, but most of the pups were placed privately, not through puppy referral. Inquiries and returned questionaires are picking up, so spring and summer placements look really good. However, now I have lots of people seeking pups and no pups listed. Respectfully submitted, Judie Freeland, MHGRC puppy referral MileHiJudie@aol.com

Conformation Report I would like to quickly thank Erik and Jen Strickland for a wonderful seminar in February. It received rave reviews! Also, thank you to everyone who helped at the Goldens Only Fun Match in March. It is always a blast to see everyone come out to support that event, especially the new puppies. Judge Karen Nauer had a blast as well! With the start of 2009, and some new people to conformation, I thought it might be helpful to list some conformation training/ practice locations and classes. Agility Report Well it s finally happened. AKC has approved a new program for its performance classes. Beginning April 2010 mixed breed dogs will be allowed to register with AKC ($35 fee) and compete in OB, Rally and Agility as long as the event is a standalone event and not held in conjunction with an all breed show. I m glad to see AKC make this allowance as it has many benefits. Not only will it allow people who have mixed breed dogs to now compete in another performance venue but it will also bring more entries for those clubs who had trouble making enough money to cover the cost of events that don t fill. Realizing that the AKC is a purebred club I find this new ruling to be a positive step in direction for AKC to recognize and bring benefit to dog owners of all types. MHGRC will host another 3-day agility event this July 17, 18, and 19 INDOORS at Douglas County Fairgrounds. These agility events are huge moneymakers for our club and they don t run by themselves so if you re tired of hearing our pleas for help that means you need to step up and volunteer for the club. At our March event there were only a few non-agility folks who offered their assistance and it was greatly appreciated but we need more than a few folks. For every spot we have to fill from outside the club we will be paying them to work which means less profit for the club. If you can help please contact Laura Gillice at laura.gillice@baxa.com She will find a job to fit even the most non-experienced worker. BRAGS I know there were a lot of great runs at the MHGRC trial in April but there were no brags reported. Congratulations to all who entered and had a great time playing agility with their dogs. I d like to also thank those non-agility club members who made themselves available to help with the event. Thanks to you and to our agility members it was a great event. It s important that we all do our share as club members to make MHGRC events a great success. Please remember to send your brags to me when trials are over so I can compile them into a newsletter report. Obedience Report Star Crowned Brule of Ocotilla RE CDC, earned his RE at Terry-All KC April 10th, 11th and 12th. He got 3 first places with scores of 99, 96, and 99. Brule is owned and trained by Karen Lamb. Congratulations! Good job Brule. Kathy Neville s Jezzie, Goldenbear s Ever Wild Jezebel, CD RE CGC, earned her first two RAE legs at the Coloado Kennel Club Trial, Feb 15 and 16 and finished her UKC CD with a 2nd place on March 7. She also won 1st place and her 1st ASCA Novice B leg at the Southern Colo. Australian Shepherd Club trial in Castle Rock. Congratulations to Kathy and Jezzie. Jean VonBarby s Elysian s Beano Other CDX JH RA WCX showed for her 1st time in Open B at Terry-All KC and got 2-2nd placements. Nice job Jean and Toot! We are still in need of a couple of Rally stewards for the Specialty June 1st.
