` SECRETARY S REPORT JUNEGENERALMEETING Wednesday,June15,2016 NKCPicnic ChalcoHillsStateRecreationalArea/GroupShelter LaVista,NE President Tim Bourke called meeting to order at 7:35pm. 10 Members present and their guests. Motion made by Rom Weaks to approve May 2016 meeting minutes as published in The Growler. Seconded by Sheryl Bradbury and passed unanimously with no corrections or additions. Officer and CommitteeReports Report of President Postponed to later in meeting. Report of Vice President No report. Requested that Membership offer ideas or suggestions for next social programs. Report of Secretary No Report. Report of the Treasurer Presented by Barb Hill. See Treasurer s Report attached. Motion made by Sue Volkmer to approve the Treasurer s Report as presented. Seconded by Sharon Bourke. Report approved unanimously with no additions or corrections. No new membership applicants to introduce or vote upon. Moved on to Unfinished Business where respective Committees will present as applicable. Unfinished Business OBEDIENCE TRIAL Ron Weaks reported that it Trial that recently wrapped up went well, but was a TON of work. Can always use more manpower. Discussion as to whether we should offer another Obedience Trial before the 2017 NKC Show. Ron said No. Barb Hill may Chair. If so, then there is a good possibility that NKC will indeed offer another Obedience Trial before the 2017 Show. TRACKING TRIAL Shelly Rehmeier; No new news to report. Date of the Trial will be November 13, 2016. Judges will be Jane Jonas and Inge Suchnanek. BARN HUNT Waiting for Companion Dog to okay second weekend of December date before we can move ahead. ALL BREED DOG SHOW AND OBEDIENCE TRIAL 2017 Sandy Orr has call into AKC to see if are approved to hold a Show. Sandy was not present at the meeting to give update. Tim Bourke was appointed the Disaster & Emergency Response Chair for the 2017 Show at the. Sheryl Bradbury brought up that the GBGB & Miscellaneous Breed in FSS is considering holding their National in conjunction at the NKC 2017 Show. We would need to submit a proposal to them within the next couple weeks if we are interested in having them come. Sheryl B. will put something together to propose and get it to Barb Hill for consideration and action. The dilemma is that we do not yet know if AKC has approved us for a 2017 show so the proposal for the GBGB & Misc National would have to contingent on NKC being approved for the 2017 Show. 2

An article, Training comfort dogs an exercise for pups and handlers, appeared in the July 11, 2016, edition of the Omaha World-Herald about NKC member, Lucy Kerby. Here is a link to the story: http://www.omaha.com/news/nebraska/in-grand-island-training-comfort-dogs-isan-exercise-for/article_7cb55783-8780-56af-be2d-0d6d0d8b260b.html Lucy Kerby provided the following information for the NKC Growlers Gazette: Last September, Mike and Lucy Kerby were approached about instructing puppy trainers for the Lutheran Church Charities (LCC) Comfort Dog Program. After many years of training and competing with their own dogs & volunteering as instructors with different dog clubs, they both felt this was a great way to give back to the community by sharing their knowledge. In April 2016, they began teaching the first group of four Golden Retriever puppies in the Grand Island Comfort Dog training site. When the puppies start going out to church activities, visits to local stores, nursing facilities, fire departments, police stations and other locations they wear a vest indicating they are Comfort Dogs in training. With two trainers per puppy, each pair of trainers is set up with duplicate equipment and food. They share the duties of housetraining, obedience training and teaching specialized commands such as lap which is to have the pup place it s front paws over a person s lap to allow them to pet or visit with the dog. The volunteers commit to a year of training puppies and then being prepared to give them up when they graduate with the AKC Community and Urban CGC s (Canine Good Citizen) tests. Finding puppies with sound temperament, health and exceptional workability is something the LCC home office works on so there is a greater chance to succeed. The LCC has around 100 dogs in churches throughout the United States offering comfort to those in need. New puppies may be added to the training group in Grand Island at any time. There is a continual search for puppies as well as puppy trainers. If interested in being a trainer or if you have puppies available to sell you may contact either Lucy and Mike Kerby or Don Moe Moeller, the Western Coordinator for Comfort Dog training @ 308-380-9875. You can check out the puppy s FB pages or LCC website www.lutheranchurchcharities.org 5
