Overview of Antibiotics in China Animal Industry Rongsheng Qiu on Invitation of PHILEO ROME SEMINAR 2017
Situation of Antibiotic Usage in China Domestic consumption of antibiotics about 180,000 ton, of which animal consumption was 97,000 t, about 54%. Livestock and poultry application of non-therapeutic antibiotics accounted for about 71%, and up to 78% goes to broiler and swine farming. And, about 50,000 ton of antibiotics are released into the environment through animal industry. National concern over antibiotic residue, super bacteria and environmental problems these might bring forth are ever increasing... Data from Survey on 2013
Antibiotic Resistance Key facts Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and development today. Antibiotic resistance can affect anyone, of any age, in any country. Antibiotic resistance occurs naturally, but misuse of antibiotics in humans and animals is accelerating the process. A growing number of infections such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, and gonorrhea are becoming harder to treat as the antibiotics used to treat them become less effective. Antibiotic resistance leads to longer hospital stays, higher medical costs and increased mortality. Fact Sheet from WHO, 2016

General Regulations and Policies on MFA The Ministry of Agriculture Announcement No. 176 and No 168 listed all the feed additives permitted and restricted in animal feed. The additives permitted which are in the category 1 can be added into feed according to MOA s guide in the announcements. The additives restricted which are in the category 2 cannot be used in commercial feed products. They just can be used in the field for treatment with veterinarians prescription. The additives which are not in these 2 lists are strictly banned in animal feed.

Antibiotic Reduction in the Future Targets: Establish a complete system to monitor the antibiotic resistance situation all across the country. Establishing a system to supervise the usage of antibiotics, promising more than 50% of antibiotics usage will be under prescription. Completely ban the usage of antibiotics specifically for human being, as well as those easily bring about cross resistance
Motivation from Consumers and Media China Consumer Association A Semi-governmental Organization: China Consumer Association (CCA) Found in 1984, with more than 3000 units across the country Involved in the generation of laws articles, regulations related to consumers right Involved in the supervision and inspection of service and quality of commodities Release the data and information about commodities and service inpairing the right of consumpers by mass media
2017 Released Information By CCA
Environmental residue of antibiotics cause public concerns Most of the antibiotics consumed by animals were release to the environment directly or as residue in the feces (60-90%). Halling-Serensen, antibiotics and their residue were detected in China surface water. Some were in very high dangerous level. D., Wang et al, 2014, Chinese Science Bulletin
Environmental residue of antibiotics cause public concerns In Dec 2014, China Government TV Station reported that there were huge antibiotic residues in surface water in most main rivers of China.
