4 These requirements are designed to minimize the incidence and severity of calving difficulty and protect against potential reproductive losses. Heifers must be bred to service sires at or less than established birth weight EPD maximums, have a minimum pelvic area of 150 cm 2 prebreeding or 180 cm 2 at pregnancy examination, be a minimum body condition score of 5 on sale day, and meet established health guidelines. Bred Heifers were managed under the following calendar: Spring 2010: All heifers must be calfhood vaccinated for Brucellosis according to Missouri state regulations. Heifers are vaccinated for IBR, PI-3, BVD, BRSV, and 7-way Colstridial. Label directions concerning initial vaccination and boosters must be followed. Use of implants is discouraged. If heifers are implanted, only FDA approved products for replacement heifers are allowed according to label guidelines. Long-term use of MGA is prohibited. Use of MGA for periods up to 14 days to synchronize estrus is permitted. Internal and external parasites are controlled as needed. Heifers must be polled or de-horned and completely healed by sale day. Fall 2010: Pre-breeding reproductive examination is performed. Reproductive tract scored, pelvic measured, weighed Heifers are vaccinated for IBR, BVD, Leptospirosis, and Vibriosis between 60 and 30 days prior to beginning of breeding. All vaccinations must follow label directions. Internal and external parasites are controlled as needed. Spring 2011: Heifers are pregnancy examined to determine breeding dates. (Confirm AI pregnancy or natural service.) Heifers are treated for external and internal parasites within 30 days of sale date. Products for internal parasite control must have a label claim for all stages of the parasite life cycle. Heifers are examined on sale day by a final screening committee to eliminate blemishes (scarred eyes, frozen ears, short tails, rat tails). Heifers must be a minimum body condition score of 5 (1-9 scale) on sale day. Heifers have a final pregnancy check within 30 days of Sale. Heifers must be bred to bulls with birth weight EPDs not greater than the guidelines for the following breeds based on the current genetic evaluation at the time of breeding for the respective breed associations: Angus 7* Gelbvieh 109* Red Poll 0.0 Beefmaster -0.2 Limousin 11* Salers -0.5 Brangus +1.1 Maine Anjou +0.6 Shorthorn +2.4* Braunvieh -2.1 Polled/Horned Hereford +1.5* Simmental 9.6* Charolais -1.2 Red Angus 7* SimAngus -1.2 *Calving Ease EPD All sires used in conjunction with artificial insemination must have a minimum accuracy value of 0.6 on a scale of zero to one for the respective EPD s. Simmental is based on active sire calving ease EPD, not nonparent calving ease EPD. 4
5 That Cow Wasn t Supposed to Calve Today For most beef producers, the final days of the last trimester of pregnancy for their cow herd is here. For some early-bird producers, calves are already bucking and jumping. Winters like this one are great and temporarily lay to rest all the discussion of when to calve. Often producers question when a particular cow is due. Most producers have a handy calving table that projects the calving date of the cow based on the day she was bred. For example, the IRM Pocket Reference guide shows a cow bred May 21 is due on calve on March 1. In recent years, the North Dakota State University Dickinson Research Extension Center has targeted March 1 as the start of the calving season. Do the cows begin calving on March 1? Unfortunately, the cows do not read tables. Basically, a cow will calve when she and her calf decide the time is right. We ve all seen the old cow that gets up, lays down, gets up, lays down, walks over to the corner, walks back, lays down, twitches her tail and calves two weeks later. Or the cow with no udder that calves in what seems to be minutes and successfully producers a normal, well fed, day-old calf. A current trend is to advertise cows for sale with predicted calving dates. These dates were projected based on ultrasound measurements and are used to imply the cows or heifers should calf over a period of seven to 10 days. Establishing the age of a developing fetus with ultrasound is very accurate, but gestational age and calving date have little in common. At the center, ultrasound records help us sort cows based on 21-day reproductive cycles. No attempt is made to actually guess which day a cow is going to calve. In reviewing cow records, center research specialist Keith Helmuth complied all the cows with absolute breeding dates and sire of calf. In other words, 462 cows were artificially inseminated, and conceived to the unit of semen she was inseminated with. Because of the different breeds used, the parentage of the calf is not questionable. No DNA test or judge was needed to identify the father. Of these 462 cows, the average gestation length was days. Of the 462 cows, only 87 actually calved on the expected date. These cows were expected to calve 283 days after breeding, on March 1 st. In reality, the first live calf arrived February 11, then one on the 13 th and one on the 16 th. Three calves arrived on February 17, three on the 19 th, one on the 20th, three on the 21 st, nine on the 22 nd, eight on the 23 rd, and a rush on the 24 th produced 17 calves. The calving crew is starting to sweat. On the 25 th, 19 calves were born, 36 on the 26 th, 38 on the 27 th, 39 on the 28 th and finally on the due date of March 1, 87 calves were born. More sweat, despite the cold weather. On March 2, 53 cows calve, on the 3 rd, 25 calves, on the 4 th, 16 calves, on the 5 th, 22 calves, on the 6 th, 20 calves, on the 7 th, 15 calves, and on the 8 th, only four calves. Just as there appeared to be a let up, on the 9 th, 15 calves were born, on the 10 th, 12 calves, and on the 11 th, one calf. Finally, a slowdown, and the season finished with two calves on the 12 th, three calves on the 13 th, four calves on the 14 th, and one calf each on the 15 th, 16 th and 17 th. The last two calves were born on the 19 th of March. All 462 cows conceived on the same day, but the calving season lasted 32 days. Approximately 80 percent calved within an 11-day window, 95 percent in a 19 day window, and 98 percent within a 28-day window. If you want to bet me you know when your cow is going to calve, I ll bet you she won t calve on the day she s due. Cows don t calve in a seven to 10-day window, no matter who thinks they should. Happy calving. May you find all your ear tags! He can be reached at ) AN OVERVIEW OF FRAME, MULE, AND BODY CONDITION OS ON 5
6 FRAME O The frame size is calculated by estimating what the heifer will weigh as a mature cow when carrying 0.2 of backfat at the 12 th rib with an average gut fill. Each grade is divided into tenths, with a tenth equal to 20 lbs. Thus, a Medium 0 will weigh 900 lbs., a Medium 50 will weigh 1,000 lbs. and a Medium 100 will weigh 1,100 lbs. and so forth. Somewhat different is the Large 100 which indicates those females will weigh more than 1,300 lbs. when mature. USDA Mature FRAME Weight (lbs.) Large 1,100-1,300+ Medium 900-1,100 Small Show-Me Select heifers are graded by certified MDA/USDA graders and must meet the minimum requirements of a Medium 0 which is 900 lbs. mature weight with 0.2 of backfat at the 12 th rib. MULE O PLAENT COWS MULE O The muscle thickness is based on the kind of calf the cow would be expected to produce when bred to a bull of the same inherent muscular characteristics. There are 4 different muscle scores: 1, 2, 3, and 4. A 1 correlates to a thicker muscled animal with 4 being the thinnest muscle. Each score is broken into tenths, similar to the frame score, with a being the thickest and a 1-10 almost a number 2 muscle. Show-Me Select heifers must meet a minimum muscle score of a 2-0 applied by certified MDA/USDA graders based off of the USDA Feeder Cattle Standards. BODY CONDITION O A body condition score (BCS) basically describes the degree of fatness of an animal. A numerical range of 1 to 9 identifies varying degrees of fat cover. Live weight, because of varying gut fills and pregnancy status, is not a determing factor for body condition. In other words, animals of similar weights may differ dramatically in BCS. A score is given based on fat cover in the brisket, on the ribs, back, hooks and pins, and around the tail head. The optimum range for BCS is 5 through 7. BCS Description 1 Severely emaciated. Little evidence of fat deposits or muscling. 2 Emaciated. Little evidence of fat but some muscle in hindquarters. 3 Very thin. No fat on ribs or brisket. Backbone easily visible. 4 Thin, with ribs easily visible but shoulders and hindquarters still showing fair muscling. Backbone visible. 5 Moderate to thin. Last two or three ribs can not be seen unless animal has been shrunk. Little evidence of fat in brisket, over ribs, or around tailhead. 6 Good, smooth appearance; Some fat deposits in brisket and over tailhead. Ribs covered and back appears rounded. 7 Very good flesh, brisket full. Ribs very smooth. 8 Obese, back very square, heavy fat pockets around tailhead. Square appearance. 9 Rarely observed. Very obese. Mobility may be impaired by excessive fat. Show-Me Select heifers bred to calve in the spring must weigh a minimum of 800 lbs. and receive a minimum BCS of 5 if selling in the Fall/Winter sales. 6
