Veterinary Reporting System Donna M. Alexander, VMD Administrator, Cook County Animal and Rabies Control Dear Colleagues, Some months ago, Cook County Animal and Rabies Control announced the introduction of the Veterinary Reporting System (VRS) on our website. The Veterinary Reporting System (VRS) is a user friendly and reliable means of reporting disease trends you are noticing in your practice. Have you been noticing an increase in Parvo virus or Distemper this season? Have you noticed more Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease or Feline Upper Respiratory Disease in your practice whether attributable to a proven source or just observation on your part? Have you been finding more Giardia in fecal smears than what you would normally expect? Abnormal findings, abnormal responses to common treatment protocols, emergence of rarely seen diseases or increasing trends in common diseases (Continued on page 6)

Happy 120th Year Anniversary of the Chicago Veterinary Medical Association! Summertime is here in the Chicago area! I hope you are taking some time to enjoy the sights, sounds, and food of our great city! As we enjoy the summer season, it is important to keep up to date on the ongoing issues and topics that affect the veterinary profession specifically in the Chicago area. Highlight from the AVMA VLC 2016 At the AVMA VLC 2016, I attended a session an important topic that is currently affecting the veterinary industry: The Millennial generation and the differences among the four generations.. The speaker, Curt Steinhorst, was very personable and entertaining. He is a Millennial and described his upbringing with all the modern conveniences and technological advances that had the older attendees in the audience awed and amazed. He led the audience in answering the question about what was their first job and what did they get paid. The answers were hilarious! Some audience members had some unique first jobs that did not pay anywhere near today s wages! For the first time in history, there are four generations in the work place: the Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, and Millennials/GenY. A fair portion on your hospital clientele may already be Millennials. These facts should very important to practice owners as each generation has its own communication and work styles, mentoring and/or client satisfaction needs, salary and benefit compensation or pet care priorities. Each generation views leadership and authority in a unique way. As a business owner, it would behoove one to learn how to communicate effectively with each generation. By leveraging their good work qualities and addressing personal needs, veterinary business owners can utilize all employees effectively in the smooth running of their practice and maintain good client satisfaction with services. An interesting fact presented was that in 15 years, about 75% of veterinarians will be the Millennial generation! WOW! Look for more information on this important topic in current veterinary journals, business management books, and future CVMA CE Practice Management Seminars Updates on the CVMA and CVMF The CVMA Canine Influenza Task Force continues to work diligently with area veterinarians and organizations to gather the most current information on this highly contagious disease. Look for updates on current outbreaks and the latest CIV information on our website and social media pages. The CVMA continues to work closely with the AVMA and ISVMA on issues related to the veterinary profession. Our ISVMA Representatives attend the ISVMA Board meetings to present issues in the Chicago area. With all these organizations working together, the veterinary community will be a stronger voice to the pet owners in the Chicagoland area. The Governmental Relations Committee continues to be vigilant of pending legislative bills and resolutions concerning animal husbandry and proposed regulatory changes in veterinary care. Committee members are currently monitoring meeting activity before the summer recess and participating in last minute city meetings. Please keep an eye out for important s from the CVMA office that need you to take immediate action of support or opposition to current legislation issues as we may need to get your input on this issues before summer break. The Public Education Committee is concentrating their efforts into writing and publishing education materials for the general public on pet care. These materials are distributed at CVMA public events and available for purchase from our office. The Historical Committee is planning an event to commemorate the 120th year as a veterinary organization. They are working on the final details and will keep the membership informed on our webpage and social media pages. Please send any Vintage CVMA photographs or Bulletins to the CVMA office. Please call the office with any past organization events that you would like highlighted on the website and future Bulletins. The Membership Committee, lead by Dr. Bunn, continues to look for additional ways to attract new members to organization. The committee will be reaching out to Illinois Veterinary Students to encourage their participation in our complimentary student membership program. (Continued on page 4)

3 Escalation of Challenge Impetus for Elevation of Teamwork PAGE 3 Eric Voogd, Public Education & Media Relations Director The beginning of this summer is nothing short of a marathon, as the co-chairs of multiple Chicago Veterinary Medical Association committees have been jointly working together with President Dr. Rosemarie Niznik on a series of issues involving the Chicago City Council. The leadership of these committees has also been in communication with representatives from the American Veterinary Medical Association and Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association. John C. Maxwell aptly notes, Because as the challenge escalates, the need for teamwork elevates. Our doctors have taken this maxim to heart; they are to be thanked for their exemplary service and dedication to the profession. In the spring of 2016, the CVMA board approved the creation of a Canine Influenza Virus Taskforce led by Drs. Audrey Keller (co-chair, Public Education Committee) and Dr. Shannon Greeley (Chair, Governmental Relations Committee). H3N2 still remains a concern for dog owners, veterinary hospitals, shelters, city park districts, City of Chicago mayoral office, Cook County government, and other local municipalities within the Chicago metropolitan area. Dr. Donna Alexander, Cook County Animal Rabies Control Director, created the Veterinary Reporting System for doctors to quickly submit information for the purpose of reporting disease trends. In order to best respond to media reports, the Veterinary Profession must have proper and accurate documentation. Your participation in sharing this information with Dr. Alexander is invaluable to the efforts for GIS mapping of cases involving communicable diseases, such as the CIV outbreak. Not only is this data crucial for answering questions from the media, but also for factual information in reports and presentations including One Health for the benefit of elected members of government. Over the past several months, leadership from the CVMA Governmental Relations, Public Education, and Animal Welfare committees have been in a series of meetings with aldermen and groups in the community to deliberate on the best solutions to address problems involving responsible pet ownership, animal health, and animal welfare in the Chicago metropolitan area. When Chicago City Council aldermen and Cook County Commissioners make legislative policy decisions in the absence of facts while guided by special interests that are not subject matter experts with no medical and scientific training, there are often many unintended (and preventable) consequences. If you live or practice medicine in Chicago or Cook County and have a working relationship with your Chicago alderman and/or Cook County commissioner, please contact Dr. Greeley and me. On the 6 th of July during a Chicago White Sox baseball game at Cellular Field, Drs. Todd Florian and Claire Conrath represented the CVMA Public Education Committee and answered questions from pet owners about CIV. We are most appreciative for the partnership with the senior management of this American League baseball team. The Dog Days of Summer Bark in the Park game scheduled for Tuesday, 13 September 2016 remains on the calendar for pet owners. The CVMA CIV Taskforce will continue to be a vehicle for communication of important information with the public, not limited to only the Chicago White Sox, but also as we focus efforts in the area of One Health through a variety of outreaches with key stakeholders. The Public Education Committee is looking forward to the upcoming 2016/2017 school year with the expansion of a partnership with the Junior Achievement of Chicago. There are new opportunities for our doctors to interact with young people (middle, junior high, and high school students) in the DuPage County area. Also of note, on Friday Saturday, October 2016, the Museum of Science and Industry is hosting its 4 th Annual Science Works STEM program. Since 2013, the CVMA Public Education Committee has played an integral role with this MSI event and received tremendously positive feedback from MSI leadership and the public. On the 14 th, a Public Education Committee member will lead a 30-minute Jr. Science Café and share their personal journey into a STEM career; this is targeted to Chicago-area school groups. On the 15 th, a Public Education Committee member will present a short tabletop activity and talk about their work at an interactive Science Stop; this is targeted to families and community groups. During these two days, doctors from the Public Education Committee will meet with thousands of members of the general public and their families. If you are looking for a great way to share your love of veterinary medicine, please contact me for more details. Update. In recent communication with Special Agent Robert Simmons, FBI Chicago Field Office WMD Director, the two day course previously scheduled for November 2016 will be held at the FBI Chicago Field Office in the spring of More details are forthcoming. In the interim, informative items from the FBI HQ in Washington, DC will be shared with our Association members. The (Continued on page 6)

The June Meeting on Dermatology was very informative as skin disease is a major focus in small animal practice, especially in the summer months. The speaker, Dr Valerie Fadok, DVM, was very knowledgeable and gave the attendees many tidbits of helpful hints to take back to the office and incorporate into practice the next day. The vendors were present with a friendly greeting offering attendees product information brochures and samples, raffle drawings entry forms, and candy bars to attract visitors to their tables. If you have not attended one of these CE events, I encourage you to take a look at the CE schedule on the CVMA website and sign up for a meeting! You will have a great time learning state-of-the-art veterinary information, networking with local colleagues, speaking with several vendors all without the expensive travel expenses of destination CE meetings. Please don t hesitate to stop by the CVMA table during the lunch time and meet the Board Memb ers and office staff. We would love to meet you and get your input on the issues you face as a Chicago area veterinarian. The charitable arm of our organization, the Chicago Veterinary Medical Foundation, CVMF, is planning a few downtown fundraising events for fall season. Plan to attend one of these events for a fun afternoon or evening out! Promote these fundraising events to your clients and local businesses! Make a donation today! In July, the Executive Board, Committee Members, and office staff will be attending an all day meeting with a consultant to discuss and finalize a 3 year Strategic Plan for the CVMA and CVMF. We are looking forward to this meeting so we can direct our efforts to current veterinary issues and formulate a plan to be more proactive into the next 3 years. Look for updates about this important meeting and Strategic Plan in future issues of the CVMA Bulletin. If you would like to volunteer, please call or the CVMA office! There are many committees that need your help. This is your organization; so consider giving back and volunteer even for just a few hours before or during a CVMA or CVMF event. We are always looking for individuals interested in serving as a CVMA Board Member. A complete list of Committees and Board Positions can be found on the CVMA website. 6 (Continued from page 3) Veterinary Profession has a key role as a sentinel on the front lines addressing areas of both public health and animal health and welfare. As the CVMA continues to open new doors of with exciting opportunities, your professional growth is important to us. We are here to help you make an indelible impact in your sphere of influence. There are exceptional areas for you to join your colleagues. Now is an awesome time to become part of the dynamic Public Education Committee. I look forward to assisting you, hearing your insights, and providing engaging programs for you to interact with the public, and impart your passion and expertise in shaping the future of veterinary medicine. Carpe diem! Eric Voogd evoogd@chicagovma.org (Continued from page 1) are all reportable. The VRS is extremely easy to use. Just go to the County website at under Agencies and find Animal and Rabies Control on the top line. Once on our site, a simple click on the right side of your screen will take you to the Veterinary Reporting System. Fill it out with as much or as little information as you can provide. The only required identifiers are the Hospital Name and Zip Code for us to weed out public interference and for use in GIS mapping in case of a communicable disease spread such as our recent CIV outbreak. We have epidemiology interns to compile all of your information for us to report to you what trends are being seen in area practices. However, it cannot work if you are not submitting your information. It is very disheartening for us as professionals to have to respond to media reports without proper documentation. It is more troubling to us that we cannot provide you with the essential tool of updating you on disease trends to help you prepare and protect your patients. Let us be the vehicle to provide you with crucial information that can save patient lives and provide a public health service. Please use the Veterinary Reporting System as a voluntary means of reporting information in the same way that the CDC is a mandatory reporting system for human health professionals. The VRS works FOR YOU if you contribute information that helps us all. Donna M. 10 P A G E 10 Are you a global health warrior? If you spend your days taking care of Chicagoland dogs and cats, global health warrior may not be integral to your self-image. And yet, because you are a veterinarian, the label applies. As an Australian native who practiced veterinary medicine in Australia and England before settling in the U.S. in the 1980s, I have seen a fair bit of the world and love to travel. Having previously visited Turkey, Jordan, and Egypt for work related events, I was pleased to be invited by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia s academic accreditation commission to review Qassim University s College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine. In April 2016 (specifically, 28/4/1437 to 2/5/1437, according to the Islamic calendar), I and two others on the review panel a veterinary department head and former dean from Denmark and England, respectively completed a five-day visit. Saudi Arabia is making a substantial investment in higher education. Qassim University was established in 2004 through the merger of the branch campuses of two other Saudi universities, and it currently enrolls 70,000 students. Located in the geographic and agricultural center of the country, Qassim is home to the newer of the two Saudi veterinary programs, and it graduates about 35 veterinary students a year. Their soon-to-be-opened veterinary teaching hospital was very impressive, and their caseload quite unlike that at our college. For one thing, they see thousands of camels a year. You may be surprised to learn that Saudi Arabia is home to the world s largest vertically integrated dairy company, Almarai, which produces more than one billion liters (about 264 million gallons) of milk a year at mega-dairies in the desert. Saudi Arabia is also home to the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) or at least it is where the virus was first identified, in Since then, there have been 1,782 laboratory-confirmed cases of MERS and 634 deaths in 27 countries, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Saudi Arabia had active cases during my April visit. The WHO notes that camels are likely to be a major reservoir host for the virus and a source of MERS infection in humans, although the exact role of camels in transmission is not known. Which brings me back to the global health warrior idea. Within 24 hours after standing next to camels at the Qassim veterinary teaching hospital, I was back in the U.S. Could I have carried something more back with me than just the knowledge I gained about Saudi veterinary programs? Veterinarians the world over stand ready to address the threat of zoonotic and foreign animal diseases made imminent by international travel and trade. To prove the point that each of you is a global health warrior, I need only reference the new strain of canine influenza virus that arrived in your city from South Korea last year. Or the human monkeypox outbreak of 2003 in the midwest, which arrived in Chicago by way of pet prairie dogs that had been housed with an infected Gambian rat at a pet store. Our college is here to assist you and others with training and services needed to battle disease and promote animal and public health on a local or global scale. In June Dr. Yvette Johnson-Walker led a Zoo Ready conference to help personnel from accredited animal exhibitor institutions develop coordinated response plans for infectious disease and weather-related events. She has revised and delivered this program many times since first offering it in 2012, and has delivered similar emergency preparedness training programs to the veterinary and companion animal rescue communities. We are at the beginning of a major paradigm shift in how the U.S. plans to respond to the next large outbreak of a foreign animal disease (FAD), says Dr. Johnson-Walker. The high costs and unintended consequences of recent outbreaks have highlighted the need to move away from large-scale culling as the only means of FAD mitigation. Our Office of Public Engagement is also preparing to go global with its EVP program via an online platform to improve food animal production practices worldwide. Look for details in coming months at evp.illinois.edu. Dr. Igor Canisso, on the other hand, brings the global spotlight to Illinois: he is hosting the Seventh International Symposium on Stallion Reproduction here at the end of August. If I can shed further light on these numerous topics, please send me a note at dean@vetmed.illinois.edu.
