9 2018 Competition Judges Craig Wilson Craig Wilson has been involved in merino production and genetic evaluation for over 20 years. Craig started his own business formally known as Craig Wilson Livestock more than ten years ago. Craig has worked on several merino studs including Boonoke Deniliquin and Hazeldean Cooma in management and marketing roles. Areas of expertise include the design of merino breeding programs and combining visual and objective selection techniques. Craig Wilson uses an innovative classing system where body weighing, fleece testing and visual classing is measured simultaneously in-race on your property. Craig is the Managing Director of Craig Wilson and Associates; A Merino genetic consultancy business based in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales and services a client base across New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. Craig Wilson and Associates is focused on providing independent and ethical services to the Australian Merino Industry, both primary producers and service providers. Matthew Coddington Matthew owns and manages Roseville Park Merino Stud with his wife Cherie, 35 km South of Dubbo NSW. The farm is 3200 Ha. and runs up to 22,000 DSE in the 650mm rainfall environment. They run up to 10,000 Merino sheep of which 3200 stud ewes are artificially inseminated annually. Other enterprises include beef cattle trading, prime lambs and cropping. The Merino stud was established in 1938 by Matthew s grandfather George and currently sells 650 rams and sells up to 3,000 doses of semen each year to the client base of 650 clients across Australia, New Zealand, Uruguay, Argentina, Falkland Islands, South Africa, USA, China and Russia. Matthew, classes sheep for his commercial clients and provides other advice on genetics, nutrition, budgeting and flock husbandry. He has also been an industry representative to Sheep Genetics, Sheep CRC, AWI, Merino Link, Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Sire Evaluation Association, The Merino Lifetime Project and the NSW Stud Merino Breeders. He is the current Chairman of Dubbo National Ram sale Association, Macquarie Sire Evaluation Association (Trangie Research Station), The NSW SMBA Technical and Publicity Committees. Matthew and Cherie were also named the NSW Farmer s of the Year in 2013.
10 2017 Seasonal Conditions Unlike large parts of NSW, graziers in the Crookwell region experienced a good season where the timing of key rainfall events proved to be just as important as the amount. Excellent rainfall in March provided a solid early break to the season with Crookwell recording 114mm, all of which fell in the second half of the month. Pastures responded quickly to the moisture and warm conditions and there was a big germination of clover, especially in paddocks that had a good fertiliser history. The warm, moist conditions also favoured a rapid build-up of barber s pole worms on pasture. After a strong start to the growing season, pasture growth during winter was heavily restricted by exceptionally dry conditions (NSW recorded its 10th driest winter on record) and cold nights. This winter at Crookwell, 48 nights out of 92 fell below zero degrees, with the biggest frost (-7.5 o C) occurring on 1 July. The frequent and large number of heavy frosts hit pastures hard and by the end of winter pasture levels in general had declined and were sitting somewhere around the long-term average. On many farms, ewes became over-fat in early pregnancy and carried this condition through to lambing. As a result, a high number of producers reported losses of ewes at lambing from prolapse and exploding ewe syndrome. The relatively dry winter meant fewer ewes were affected by foot abscess or pregnancy toxaemia and the relatively benign weather conditions would have undoubtedly assisted with lamb survival. Dry conditions extended into September with annual grasses quickly putting up a seed head. Good rain in late September and early October provided valuable moisture for the perennials, however the end result was a spring that didn t produce a lot of bulk but enough rain to keep pastures green and extend out the growing season. Late spring rain was ideal for both barber s pole worms and flystrike. Barber s pole worms are now present in about 80% of flocks in the district, and rapidly climbed to critical levels in some flocks. An increasing number of flocks have barber s pole worms that are resistant to several drenches. Blowflies were particularly attracted to any wet dags, especially on lambs. Contributed by Matt Lieschke LLS Officer, using data from the field trial site on Shannon Arnall s Property Carinya Laggan.
