3 Global control strategies FMD Negative effects of the disease prevents development of animal husbandry sectors affects and disrupts trade in animals and animal products in FMD-free countries, can causes financial damage in FMD-endemic countries, threatens food security and livelihoods of smallholders Widespread throughout the world, particularly Asia, Africa and Middle East PPR Negative effects of the disease highly contagious disease causes high losses each year threatens food security and livelihoods of smallholders A priority disease in the 5 Year Action Plan of FAO-OIE GF-TADs One of the targeted diseases for many governments Spread of the disease Africa, Middle East and parts of Asia Should be considered a Global Public Good World Organisation for Animal Health Protecting animals, Preserving our future 3
