VDS: The mission of New Mexico Department of Agriculture/Veterinary Diagnostic Services is to provide accurate animal diagnostic information to our clientele (i.e., members of the agricultural industry, veterinarians, owners, and stewards of wildlife and exotic animals) in an efficient and timely manner.

20 Marek s Disease Marek s disease is one of the most ubiquitous avian infections; it is identified in chicken flocks worldwide. Every flock, except for those maintained under strict pathogen-free conditions, is presumed to be infected Usually, diagnosis is based on enlarged nerves and lymphoid tumors in various viscera. Gallid herpesvirus 2 (MDV-1), may survive for months in poultry house litter or dust Horizontal transmission No treatment Vaccination?

29 Haemonchus contortus: AKA: stomach worm, barber's pole worm, candy cane worm, and wire worm. Single largest threat to productivity and economic gain challenged only by predators in certain areas of the country. Hypobiosis (a dormant state). Females are capable of producing up to 5000 eggs daily.

38 Coxiella burnetii; widely known as Q fever Enzootic in most areas where cattle, sheep, and goats are kept Bulk tank milk sampling of USA cattle dairies has demonstrated prevalence of the organism at the farm level of 77% to >90% Canadian seroprevalence study 48.6% of sheep operations and 63.2% of goat operations had at least one positive animal Seroprevalence in veterinarians and small ruminant farmers is also high Infection in ruminants is usually subclinical but can cause anorexia and late abortion Greatest risk of transmission occurs at parturition by inhalation, ingestion, or direct contact with birth fluids or placenta Organism is also shed in milk, urine, and feces

39 Zoonotic Risk: Occurs more frequently in persons who have occupational contact with high-risk species The clinical presentation in people is highly variable Self-limiting, influenza-like illness to pneumonia Hepatitis Endocarditis Individuals who have artificial heart valves are at particular risk, as well as anyone who is significantly immunocompromised C burnetii has been associated with human abortions Highly infectious, a single organism can reportedly cause infection via the aerosol route in people. Transmission may also occur by consumption of unpasteurized milk
