1 Saturday Clinics Every Saturday morning we hold an open clinic for the local community. We see a variety of animals ranging from livestock, dogs, cats and even rabbits and monkeys! The majority of our work is aimed at reducing the burdens of parasites, both internal and external and treating the ill health caused by them. Internal parasites cause, diarrhoea, emaciation, anaemia, bloated stomach, dull coat and stunted growth and also suppressed immunity, which leaves animals vulnerable to opportunistic infections. This puppy has such a severe worm infestation, that it has become anaemic. It is unlikely to survive. The puppy is also showing the other signs associated with severe worm burden. Corvids (rooks and crows) were introduced onto the island many years ago.they have decimated the local bird population which would ordinarily keep insects and especially tick populations down. Ticks can cause the following diseases, Babesiosis, Ehrlichiosis, Tick Fever, East Coast Fever and Anaplasmosis. Babesiosis Is caused by protozoa. Symptoms include anaemia, jaundice and dark urine. It can prove fatal if left untreated. It can be treated by a drug called diminazine. Ehrlichiosis Is caused by bacteria called ehrlichia canis. Symptoms include loss of weight, jaundice and central nervous

East Coast Fever Is caused by protozoa. Symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, high temperature and respiratory problems. This condition can prove fatal if not treated. Treatment is with anti protozoan drugs drugs, either bupavaqone or pavaquone. Anaplasmosis is also caused by protozoa. Symptoms include constipation, jaundice, haematuria and anaemia. It is fatal if not treated. Treatment is also with anti protozoan drugs. A Case of East Coast Fever ( ECF) This calf is not thriving.
