5 Comprehension Tarantulas Tarantulas are made up of a group of very large and hairy spiders. They are not insects. They are arachnids. There are over 900 different types of Tarantula s found.

This means it has an outside skeleton needed to support their muscles. Like other arachnids, the Tarantula has two parts - the main body (thorax) and the abdomen. Each leg has 7 parts to it.

8 5 Comprehension Tarantulas Tarantulas are made up of a group of very large and hairy spiders. They are not insects. They are arachnids. There are over 900 different types of Tarantula s found. Most species of Tarantula s are not dangerous to humans and many are kept as pets. Like all arthropods, the Tarantula is an invertebrate. This means it has an outside skeleton needed to support their muscles. Like other arachnids, the Tarantula has two parts - the main body (thorax) and the abdomen. Each leg has 7 parts to it. Tarantulas range in size from as small as a fingernail to as large as a dinner plate when the legs are stretched right out. The body length can range from 2.5cm s to 10cm s. Some of the largest Tarantula species weigh over 85 grams! The Goliath Birdeater from Brazil has been weighed at over 150 grams and has a leg span of 30 cm s! The male Goliath s legs are longer and the female s are fatter. Most Tarantula species live in North America and some are found in the USA, Africa, Asia, and Australia. They are mostly brown in colour. Some a bright blue and some are black with white stripes. They live in grasslands, rainforests, deserts, scrubland, mountains and cloud forests. Many burrow into the ground. Palps Thorax 8 Legs Abdomen Tarantula s hunt for prey both in the trees and on the ground. They are known to drop down on their prey from above, use a silk web to trap prey and grab insects from their burrow. The largest Tarantula s can kill small animals such as mice, rats, lizards, birds and snakes. When striking, a Tarantula will fall back on its back legs and hold its front legs out. It may hiss. It will then bite down with its large fangs like an axe chopping wood. When threatened by humans, it can let go of hairs on its back that can be breathed in causing swelling of the throat and death can follow.
