These problems will be addressed by the panel on ideas to correct the problem. The panel will have some highly qualified people on it and each provides their ideas on how to solve your problems with your K9. Continental breakfast will be served in Grand Naples Ballroom 0800 to 0950 Operational Based Explosive Dog Training and Importance of Search Intel - Paul Hammond, Vapor Wake K9 - Naples #1 Classroom This reality check will improve your explosive detection K9 program. Paul completed a two-year advanced EDD study at VWK9 s academy in which 100 plus dog teams were tested on an operational based training and intel gathering exercise. The results will surprise you. "The Smart End of the Leash" - Cameron Ford, Sr. Navy SEAL Multi Purpose Canine Instructor for Naval Special Warfare Group 1 and Researcher for Duke University Canine Cognition Center - Naples #2 Classroom Cameron will discuss the importance of canine intelligence and problem solving. Recent discoveries in canine cognition and intelligence helps trainers and handlers understand the "whys" and "what to do" when training and selecting single and dual-purpose dogs. Cameron's class will be an open discussion where he shows videos of testing dual and single purpose dogs and what has been learned to help us in picking the right dogs and how to better address training with your dog.
2 Using a Long Line to Your Tactical Advantage - Jimmie Davenport, Austin Police Department - Naples #3 Classroom The class will discuss how to incorporate a long line as a tactical tool in various scenarios. "The Science, Craft and Art of Scent Work - Mike Herstik, International K-9 - Naples #4 Classroom Science: A brief practical review of the science of scent. Presented in a common-sense manner that translates to hands on application. The elements that affect the production of scent and how it may be affected by environment and structure to 1200 Building a Successful Tracking Team - Vince Bingaman, Phoenix Police Department (Retired) - Naples #1 Classroom Vince s 20 years in Phoenix PD s K9 Unit and experience with some of the industry s most knowledgeable tracking experts has led to a culmination of tracking/trailing knowledge that is street proven. - Team selection - Training for your environment - Other training philosophies discussed - Street proven tactics while on the track - How to enhance your capture rate - Management s role in team success and limited liability - POC and high-risk suspects Dog on Dog Aggression Problem Solving - Jeff Meyer - Naples #2 Classroom Every neighborhood has them. Some that run the fence in the backyard and others that roam as strays through the alleys and streets. They are a part of the environment in which we must routinely deploy. In addition to the pets in our community, we oftentimes find ourselves needing or wanting to work K-9 search teams in close proximity or in tandem to accomplish our mission. Learn the techniques that clarify the mission for the dog and redirects his misguided intent toward a successful deployment. "High Risk Arrests Using Your K9" - Bob Day, Aurora, Colorado - Naples #3 Classroom Bob will show you how they do buy/busts and vehicle takedowns with K9 and SWAT. There will be video of actual takedowns along with dog apprehensions on the last slide. It's a history of how SWAT had K9 be 3-4 blocks away while they did the takedowns and how they worked on integrating with SWAT to work side by side.
3 Obedience to Odor - Ken Licklider, Vohne Liche Kennels - Naples #4 Classroom This class will take handlers into why detection dogs do what they do. Ken will delve into what drives are and how they are utilized. The term, obedient to odor refers to the dog understanding that odor drives the reward, not the handler to 1300 Lunch Break 1300 to 1450 On the Mark - Cameron Ford and Jeff Meyer, HITS - Naples #1 Classroom This class will discuss the common problems handlers deal with in detection dogs as well as how a small and simple change in their approach (based on science) will lessen or eliminate those issues, as well as creating reliability under the scrutiny of law. Managing Extreme Bite Behavior - Bob Eden, Eden Consulting, Delta Police Department (Retired) - Naples #2 Classroom This lecture provides officers the background and related science behind issues related to extreme bite behavior, and why it is so difficult to resolve issues of releasing the bite for some dogs. While some breeds are more prone to the issues than others, this class can provide trainers with the knowledge to help them understand what is happening psychologically with the dog and provide them with potential alternatives to traditional corrective measures. Operational Based Explosive Dog Training and Importance of Search Intel - Paul Hammond, Vapor Wake K9 - Naples #3 Classroom This reality check will improve your explosive detection K9 program. Paul completed a two-year advanced EDD study at VWK9 s academy in which 100 plus dog teams were tested on an operational based training and intel gathering exercise. The results will surprise you. "Proper E-Collar Introduction for the Police K9" Sgt Gregg Tawney, Elk Grove Police Department - Naples #4 Classroom
4 1500 to 1700 Seven Deadly Sins - Bob Wright, Superintendent Niagara Regional Police Service Ontario, Canada (Retired) - Naples #1 Classroom This class is designed to prepare Canine Handlers for real world encounters away from the training field. In addition to looking at the dangers of common errors made by all of us, it will look at the importance of realistic and operationally sound training. Although this class is particularly important for the new handler, the class also serves as a great reminder for experienced handlers, trainers and supervisors to ensure that they use their officer safety skills in the day-to-day deployments of their Police Service Dogs. Obedience to Odor - Ken Licklider, Vohne Liche Kennels - Naples #2 Classroom This class will take handlers into why detection dogs do what they do. Ken will delve into what drives are and how they are utilized. The term, obedient to odor refers to the dog understanding that odor drives the reward, not the handler.
