SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE DOG CALMING STRAGEGIE by Psychologist Martina Annelie Becher Energy Psychology offers smart and elegant solutions to any kind of problem. Problems you may have with yourself as well as problems you may encounter in the daily life with your dog. The basis of those ingenious solutions is in the fact that our energy system is interconnected with our feelings and actions. Once we find a way to access our energy system we have found a way to change our emotions in any given situation. Using meridian point tapping techniques such as EFT is a simple and quick way out of stress and back into happiness. In order to help you calm your dog (and yourself) in distressing situations I have created this unique tool. You can use it in situations where your dog gets upset, be it out of fear or any other unwanted emotion. Please note that this is no medical treatment nor does it replace such a treatment. Remember that dogs are animals and can be unpredictable when under stress. DO not rely solely on these tapping points when it comes to an aggressive dog. Applying self-help tools in such a case can be dangerous so you need to seek professional help.

1 CALM YOUR DOG AND YOURSELF IN ANY GIVEN SITUATION Look at this dog here. She is obviously defending her bone. Her aggression grows from one second to the next. Picture number 4 shows you what a dog looks like who really means business. How does looking at this dog make you feel? It is a bit creepy, don't you think? To be on the safe side you need to stay away from a dog who is looking like this one. If your own dog behaves like her you really need to get some help. Don't worry, the tapping works for frightened dogs as well - I just couldn't find a pic of a fearful dog so I used the aggressive dog as my intro image. What can you do to calm your dog when he is getting upset or aggressive? There are two mayor meridian points I would like to show you. If you tap on those points you will feel more relaxed and less tense. The same happens for your dog. I use at least one of them whenever I find that my dogs or horses start to get tense or nervous. The result is always the same: My animals relax and calm down.

2 Here is the first point: It is the Triple Warmer point. It is on the back of the hand between the little finger and the ring finger. This Triple Warmer point is a very potent point for de-stressing yourself and your dog. So when your dogs starts to wind himself up, you immediately start tapping on this point. Whilst tapping you repeat the following sentences: You are safe and secure. You are safe. All is well. You are safe. You are calm. You are peaceful. Make sure to pronounce the words "safe and secure, safe, well, calm, peaceful" in a deliberately slow fashion as if you intended to hypnotize your dog.

3 This simple but very powerful exercise works threefold: 1. It reduces your own anxiety 2. It calms your dog 3. It calms everyone else around. 4. In case of a conflict between two dogs tapping on this point helps to avoid a fight Why is it so important to reduce your own anxiety? Your dog is able to feel your emotions just as you are able to feel his. Not only that but your dog senses your energy flow. So he knows all about you in a given situation. It is only natural to be upset when your dog gets aggressive and there is nothing you can do about it. The problem with this is that your dog misinterprets your anxiety. He does not know that he is causing your distress but relates it to the other dog or person. What this means is that he "thinks" you feel threatened by the other individual. This either increases his own fear or his wish to protect you. Either way his aggressiveness will grow which in turn will upset you even more and on it goes. In order to calm your dog in an upsetting situation you need to calm yourself first. Once you have calmed down your energy field changes and your dog receives a different message from you. You will project your own calmness onto him which allows him to slow down as well. Whilst you tap on yourself you also act as a surrogate for your dog. When he is upset his body is overflowed by adrenalin and other stress related neurotransmitters and his energy system is in a state of turmoil. A dog in an upset state is a dog under severe stress. His system is in "flight or fight" mode with the sympathetic nervous system running the show. As you log into his energy system by focussing your attention on his state of upset you can tap his stress away.

4 Here is a second point to tap on which will also be very useful: The Amygdala Tapping Point This powerful point is on the side of your knee. To find it just run your finger down the outside of your leg. Just below your knee you will find a little bump. That's where the point is. The Amygdala can be called the "fire alarm bell" of the nervous system. Once it is fully activated it shuts down parts of the brain which are responsible for rational thought. This brain structure is part of our survival system. Our body changes instantaneously into fight or flee mode when this alarm bell rings. So when your dog is in a state of aggression his amygdala is activated and he is not open to listening to his normal commands. Here is what you can do to prepare yourself for your next emergency. 1. Find the two points on your body. 2. Remember them. 3. Tap on them to get a feeling for them. 4. Notice what happens. Chances are you will feel more relaxed just by tapping on the Triple Warmer and on the Amygdala tapping point.
