2 Heidi and Julia - The Story leading to wheels4dogs Julia first noticed a problem with her German Shepherd Dog (GSD), Heidi, in 2008 when she realised that one of her back feet seemed to be catching as she walked. During a routine trip to the vets for vaccinations she mentioned this and they were given the diagnosis of Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) or Chronic Degenerative Radiculomyelopathy (CDRM) to give its full name. The vet told them that there was no treatment and that Heidi would get steadily worse until she lost all use in her back legs. Over the next 15 months her condition gradually worsened. Meanwhile internet research showed Julia that there were wheels available and they were lucky to find a second-hand set for a GSD locally. Unfortunately they found it very difficult to get her in and out of these, they were very heavy and she just stood trembling. Julia discussed this with their Vet, who had been doing her own research and that was when they found Walkin Wheels. After a period of learning for all of them, Julia and Heidi caused lots of amusement in the village when they were seen running down the road with Julia trying to keep up with a GSD determined to get down to the village green and beach. Walks were never the same again as people used to stop and talk to them and give Heidi lots of fuss. As Heidi s fitness returned and the muscles in her chest and shoulders developed they were able to go for the longer walks that she loved. When Julia and David were given the chance to import these amazing products to the UK, they didn t hesitate. After over 6 years of running Wheels4dogs the time came for Julia and David to have a go at retiring. They have now handed the reins over to me, Becky and I look forward to enriching the lives of many pets and their owners. 2

How to Measure For Dog Boots To measure the width of your dog's foot, place the foot on a piece of paper and press down on the top of the foot, mimicking how the foot spreads when the dog's walking. Mark the left and the right side of the foot on the paper and measure the distance between the marks. Compare this to the boot sizes. The width of the foot should be smaller than the boot size. You may need to support them but it is important that the measurement is taken when the foot is 'splayed' as in weight bearing. Draw around the paw, making sure to include the clawss. (A) Take a measurement of the widest part of the paw. (B) Take a measurement of the longest part of the paw. Using these measurements, compare to the measurement chart. If the measurement is exactly the same as the size on the chart, we recommend going up one size to leave room for the paw. If your dog cannot stand, you can take these measurements by placing their paw on the paper and pressing down to mimic the natural splay of the paw when standing. 21 Walkin' Front and Rear Splints The Walkin' front and rear Splints support dogs and pets with lower limb injuries that need a brace to help the healing process. These splints are modelled and inspired after human splints that support injuries of the ankle, foot, or lower leg. Splints are positioned in the back of the dog's leg and can be fully adjusted with Velcro straps placed over the front of the leg. There are two different models, the front leg splint that extends to just below the elbow and the back leg splint that extends above the hock. Both splints extend completely under the foot, giving full support to the bottom of the dog's leg. These splints are built not only for durability but for comfort. They are specifically designed to feel natural and comfortable when placed on your pet, giving them the ability to walk around freely without difficulty or discomfort. 22 How Long Should My Pet Wear the Walkin' Splint? Our splints are not designed to be left on your pet for a long period of time or for long term use. Introduce your pet to the splint by slowly fitting the splint onto your pet, and do this for the first handful of times your pet has to wear the splint. When your pet is resting or relaxed for a long period of time, keep the splint off. Always remove the splint overnight. These dog and pet splints come in a range of sizes to fit your dog or pet perfectly. The sizes range from XX-Small to X-Large, to make sure all breeds are covered. For cats, the XX-Small is usually the correct size to purchase, please view our size chart to verify. All splints come with adjustable straps to fit the splint perfectly to your pet's dimensions. Splints will not be effective if they are too loose or too tight. Here you will find information on how to determine which size splint is the right fit for your dog or cat. Please keep in mind, the Walkin' Splints are designed to support the lower part of the legs. They will not stabilize the knee on the rear leg. 25 Walkin' Hock Splint The Walkin' Hock Splint will accommodate injuries to the heel and stabilize the lower rear limb while keeping the paw free. This type of splint is ideal for Achilles Tendon problems and immobilization of the Hock joint. Note: The Hock splint will support the Hock or heel only and does not extend under the foot or paw of the animal. 26 How to use a Dog Splint Injuries to the lower limb of small animals often need to be splinted or braced. Please see your veterinarian to determine whether this is the best treatment for your pet. These splints can be used on the lower leg for stability and support and are available in a full range of sizes with different shapes to accommodate the front or rear leg comfortably. Your pet should always be supervised when using the splint. Walkin' Splints are placed on the back of the leg and held in place by padded Velcro straps. They extend about halfway up the leg. The bottom of the splint extends completely under the paw to provide weight-bearing support. This is ideal for fractures, knuckling, and other ailments. Splints are made of hard plastic with a soft foam lining and a non-skid pad on the bottom. The non-skid pad will not work well on some slippery surfaces. Before using the splint, test it on the surface to make sure it will grip adequately. Fitting Instructions Splints should be used only when recommended by a pet care professional who will determine whether the splint is appropriate, how long it should be worn, and what problems might occur that would indicate that use of the splint should be discontinued. These include chafing, muscle atrophy, or extreme distress of the animal. The First Time Occasionally, animals resist having the splint put on and may try to escape. An animal with a splint halfway on can injure himself or herself. Put the splint on in an enclosed area and secure the pet with a lead or other restraint. As you start to put on the splint, reward the pet with special treats. Start with two to three minute sessions and increase the time as your pet gets used to the splint. Putting the splint on your pet Putting a sock on the leg before applying the splint is sometimes more comfortable for the dog. Front splints should be applied on a sitting animal, rear splints on a standing animal. Start at the bottom, placing the foot flat in the bottom of the splint, making sure that the toes do not extend over the bottom edge. Snug the bottom strap first. Check for a snug fit after the animal has taken a few steps. 26

32 Custom Wheelchairs Not all disabled dogs or pets can fit into the Walkin' Wheels Dog Wheelchair, even with its full adjustability. Custom dog wheelchairs can be ordered through wheels4dogs and made by HandicappedPets.com to accommodate pets with special sizing needs. We can provide custom wheelchairs for dogs over 180lbs, four wheel quad wheelchairs and front limb wheels. These carts will require additional measurements and there will be delays while the cart is made in the USA and shipped to the UK or EU.
