A Tribute to Tom Luxton Esquire The GSDCV wishes to acknowledge the passing of our esteemed Patron and Life Member, Mr Tom Luxton. Tom played a significant role in the betterment of the German Shepherd Dog both at State level and Nationally. We offer our condolences to Ginnie and his family on the passing of this much loved gentleman and friend of the German Shepherd Dog. Patron of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria There is never a good time or place to hear of the passing of a friend, yet without doubt there was never a more apt time or place than at the conclusion of the State Breed Exhibition to hear of Tom s passing, among people that loved and respected him, celebrating the breed that he loved and was innately linked with for his whole life. Tom s grandfather, Mr. H D Luxton was the first President of our club, back in 1929, with Tom himself being a member of the GSDCV for over 50 years. It is hard to put into words the contribution that Tom made to the Breed and to our Club in his lifetime, suffice to say that without his efforts in lifting the import ban on German Shepherd Dogs in the early 70 s we would not have the pets we do today, nor the Club that we currently enjoy. Tom was appointed as our Patron, an honour that we have bestowed on very few in our history, and to us he was so much more than this. He was an instructor, a role he had for over 10 years. A breeder, he founded the Kamarn Breeders foundation in the early 1970 s, which amongst other things provided GSDs into the guide dog system at that time. A mentor to many, sounding board to numerous Presidents over the years, including myself and always, always a gentleman and friend. Tom may be gone but he is certainly not forgotten. I am sure that Tom is up there somewhere looking down on us with a group of German Shepherds gathered around him waiting for his command to get to work. Our thoughts are with Ginnie, Julia and the whole family. Goodbye our dear friend. Vince Ebejer, GSDCV President. March 25, 2018 Page 7

The following is a reproduction Tom Luxton's contribution to the GSDCV as a Life Member and Club Patron, written by James Rodger in Thomas Roger Luxton Esquire Patron of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria To say that Tom has always been part of the German Shepherd world, is to state an absolute truism. His grandfather, Mr. H D Luxton was the first President of our club, back in 1929, nearly 80 years ago. Tom himself has been a club member for the past 52 years. Essentially his hectic business life prevented him from playing a prominent, upfront role for the club. Tom only held a committee position in 1963, although over the very long time he has been actively involved with German Shepherd dogs. He was an obedience instructor for more than 10 years. He has also been a huge contributor in a large variety of ways to the cause of the German Shepherd Dog, including assisting dogs and people during times of great hardship and difficulties. The club has truly recognized Tom s service with a well-deserved Life Membership. Probably his finest hour was the pivotal role he played in the lifting of the infamous import ban on German Shepherds. He recognized that the only way to achieve anything with the commonwealth/federal politicians was to produce an independent, unbiased and objective scientific opinion as to the attributes and virtues of the German Shepherd Dog, as opposed to the commonly held view that the German Shepherd/Alsatian was more trouble than it was worth and was a potential super sheep killer. He proceeded to gather worldwide scientific opinion, from a wide variety of sources, including the Royal Guide Dogs for the Blind Associations of Australia, the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association California USA, The world's first formal guide dog movement Seeing Eye Incorporated New Jersey, Professor Scott for the Centre for Research on Social Behaviour, University of Ohio, the University of Melbourne, the Australian National University, the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation USA, internationally recognized geneticists, dog trainers, etc. This resulted in a scholarly and scientifically based report that was presented to the politicians of the day, who upon reading this report were prepared to lift the ban, initially for a trial period of one year then permanently a year later. (Note: The full story, including copies of parts of the report and related correspondence can be found in the publication A Condensed History of the German Shepherd Dog in Australia published in 1990 and which can be found in the club s library, located at KCC Park as part of the VCA library.) In recognition of these efforts to lift the ban, the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia, awarded Tom, Professor Rolf Beilhartz and Dr Wright at the 1989 Main Breed Show at KCC Park, a suitably inscribed pewter mug, with a Main Breed Show Excellent Select medal (our highest show accolade) attached to the mug, epitomizing the significance of their efforts. At the same event, Tom was awarded the GSDCA Service Award for outstanding and meritorious service. Another project that was enthusiastically tackled by Tom was the creation and founding of the Kamarn Breeders Foundation in the early 1970 s, which bred approximately 800 German Shepherd puppies under the Kamarn prefix, all bred for the specific purpose of going to work in a variety of community services which included the Police, Customs, Armed Forces and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Despite its success, the federal government decided to cease funding this organization in the early 1980 s and the Foundation had to be wound up, which Tom always considered to be an expensive Government mistake. March 25, 2018 Page 8

Undoubtedly, the best success Kamarn achieved was to introduce German Shepherd dogs into the Australian guide dog scene. It was a truly monumental effort due to the totally unfair prejudices against the German Shepherd Dog at that time. This was ironic, considering that the very large number of guide dogs throughout the world are German Shepherds, a situation pioneered by the Seeing Eye Dog School at New Jersey, USA, in the late 1920 s. In conjunction with the Kamarn project and an offshoot of its testing German Shepherd dogs for their suitability for work, Tom put an enormous effort into a program called TIC Temperament, Instinct and Character which was based on the Kamarn experience and the Fortunate Field program which bred dogs for the police, army, guide dogs for the blind, search & rescue and other security forces. Despite his best efforts, along with a lot of other people, he failed to convince the GSDCA to adopt this program as part of its breed survey scheme. Tom s family was the majority shareholder of the large retail chain of hardware stores throughout Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, known as McEwans, which was founded around the turn of the 19th century. As was the custom, Tom worked his way up the ladder to be the Chief Executive Officer and ultimately Managing Director. After fighting off a couple of takeover bids, the family eventually sold out to Repco in the early 1980 s. Thus Tom s very successful business background, both in Australia and overseas, has been of great use to the German Shepherd world in many ways in assisting with club and council problems over several decades. His wise and practical counsel has been appreciated by all those who have worked with him. Importantly, he still has very widespread and invaluable political and business contacts throughout Australia. Up until recently Tom sat on the Board of the esteemed University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic and Hospital Board of Management. Tom has owned a large number of German Shepherds throughout the years, with Nestor v Musshafen, a German import being purchased for use by the Kamarn Breeders Foundation. Unfortunately, Nestor was only moderately successful as a stud dog but had a quite good show career. Some of the dogs that Tom imported for Kamarn Breeders Foundation were Gault Pedro, Tanfield Grey Lady, Isa (a VA producer) & Irena Von Kirschental, Karen Lauerhof and Afra v Haus Gero. A local purchase from South Australia, Vonwaldshoe Cass had 48 puppies in total, but of those 48 only 2 were females! Five males from her second litter went to the New South Wales Police Force and formed the basis of their first Dog Squad. Forty five males were donated to the Australian police forces and all graduated as successful police dogs, one male was donated to the Australian customs and made a number of major drug busts. A New Zealand dog Tom purchased in the late 1980 s however, proved to be both an excellent show and stud dog. This of course, was the famous Quincito Awol. Buddy as he was popularly known had an excellent show career over a number of years. He won the Open Dog class at the 1988 & 1989 National shows and was dual Australian Sieger at the 1990 & 1991 Main Breed Shows and was always graded with a high Excellent/Excellent Select at those shows. As a fitting and lasting tribute to Buddy, Tom produced an absolutely breathtaking, fantastic colour video (approximately 8 minutes) of Buddy at work and play. Terrific viewing! At about this time, Tom developed a very firm friendship with the world famous tennis player, Ivan Lendl. He provided a number of Australian bred German Shepherd Dogs to Ivan, a devoted and committed German Shepherd Dog enthusiast. Of course, Tom, in all of the above activities, has always been loyally and faithfully supported by his lovely wife Ginny, who naturally holds the German Shepherd Dog in great esteem. 10 Traditionally, the club has had a number of patrons over the years, with quite a number coming from the Victorian Police Force, as for a period of time, the Chief Commissioner automatically assumed the position as Patron of our Club. However, when Chief Commissioner Mick Miller retired some twelve years or so ago, Tom was an automatic and popular selection as Patron, a position he is very proud to hold and in which he takes the club s interests and responsibilities very seriously indeed and is probably the best Patron the club has had to date. Equally, the club is very pleased and proud to have someone as knowledgeable and capable as Tom as Patron. March 25, 2018 Page 10

PRESIDENT S REPORT - Mr Vince Ebejer On behalf of the Management Committee of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria, I would like to welcome you all to our 2017 Annual General Meeting. It is an honour and a privilege to present my 7 th and final report as your President. I have decided after 7 years as President of the GSDCV, it is time to move on, for others to take the lead. I have always been proud of our Club, for it is OUR Club. Each one of us, through the various avenues in place has an opportunity to shape the decisions and therefore the direction that we take, that the Breed takes. With our structure and numerous avenues for circulating information, with our formal committee meetings, or not so formal meetings, our Special General Meetings, our impromptu meetings amongst friends and our accessibility to each other, to the Executive and the Management Committee, each and every one of us can make a difference, can change the mood or sway the direction of a discussion or vote. It astounds and disappoints me, that I hear so many times, when did the Club do that, why doesn t the Club do this, I can t be bothered going to the meeting, the Club has to fix it. With the numerous avenues that we utilise to disseminate information, from your magazine, the Shepherd News, the Club and Branch website, social media, through the numerous committees and through the oldest form of communication, word of mouth, there is no reason why you could not be as informed as you want to be. Look in the mirror for you are the Club, as long as you ask questions and put forward your ideas, take part in meetings, then no matter the outcome, you can hold your head high and say at least I tried, if you don t well, then all you ve got is you didn t, yes it can be hard, and yes there are those that belittle your ideas, then there are others that will listen to you, will discuss with you, will encourage you: nothing worth anything is easy, if our predecessors had given up at the first hurdle, then certainly we would not be here today, arguments can arise, as long as we all have the best interest of the breed and the club at heart, not ourselves, then we can always move on and work together. I have said on numerous occasions, as have many of us, especially when attending National Council Meetings, the greatest asset of the GSDCV has always been in its membership base, our sheer size, many of our Branches bigger in members and actual dogs training each week than many of our sister Clubs and to be honest several of them combined, our structure; allowing members to be represented in decisions that affect them, our inclusiveness at meetings. This last two items above all else, I believe to be our greatest strengths. I have heard numerous times, how great a sister organisation may be, for they may have something that we don t, quite possibly they do, then again maybe they don t. Do we really know what goes on behind closed doors, do we know their trials and tribulations, do they truly have a structure that allows all of their members a voice through one avenue or another, do their leaders represent the members wishes, or do a select few decide on the direction they take? We may believe we know: truly we don t, we only know what we are told and depending on what we want to be true, we think it s a great system or not, believe them or not. Many of the things we want are based on our own preferences rather than established facts. The cliché the grass is always greener on the other-side of the fence comes to mind. While we have had controversial issues in the past, and healthy debate is good for every organisation, especially one run by volunteers, this past year has seen us face issues that threatened to tear us apart. Passion is important, its gets us up on a cold winters morning to go to training, to set up the grounds, to do that report, write that letter or make that call after being at our other job all day. Passion should never be an excuse for attacking each other or the Club, it is never an excuse for demeaning someone, misrepresenting facts or lying. I wonder sometimes, if we are so terrible, why these people remain a member of our Club. Our other great asset has been, regardless of the decision and our own beliefs, abiding by the majority decision of our members whether via a SGM or a committee meeting. Success lays in us all working together towards the same goal. We may not always agree on the path towards that goal, and that s ok, we all have different ideas on a particular issue, as long as once a decision is made, we get on the same bus. It is not only our structure and size of membership that makes us what we are, much of our strength lies in the many hours that our members volunteer, for the passion that the volunteers have. They feel as the Club is theirs, that if they fail in their task, then the Club fails, and we cannot have that. Certainly, there are some that take on a role for their own benefit, in any organisation there are always a few bad apples, thankfully they are few and far between, they quickly realise that there is an extraordinary amount of work that needs doing and are soon found out. The vast majority I am proud to say put in a huge effort, dealing with the members on the front line, at the Branch level, at Trials and Shows, it is because of your efforts, your friendliness and openness, instructors and committee alike that keeps the members coming each week and entering events. Due to this camaraderie and dedication, once again the GSDCV has continued to grow. The 2017 final numbers of 2873 individuals comprised of 1411 units spread over the 11 Branches. Our final numbers in 2016 were 2816 individuals in 1337 units. We trained an astounding 17,420 dogs, utilising 2,970 Instructor hours, growing from & 2889 respectively in While we cannot quantify the hours of administration that we partake in, no doubt it is as significant as the Instructor hours, and for that you must all be congratulated, it is truly an amazing effort. Our relationship with Royal Canin who has been our premium sponsor for many years and one we value highly continued during the 2017 year. The Clubs relationship with Royal Canin has enabled our members to purchase premium dog food at a very significant saving, provided prizes at Shows & Trials and allowed us to host educational seminars to further educate the members and Instructors. We are constantly working with Royal Canin on further ways in which our relationship can benefit the members. During 2017, Royal Canin donated a number of German Shepherd Encyclopaedias which were distributed to the Branches. These are truly an astounding volume full of information and detailed drawings. In addition to the regular March 25, 2018 Page 12

monetary component that we receive from Royal Canin, the Club also receives a bonus amount dependent on matching/increasing the sales of product from the previous year. This past year, this bonus amount was funnelled directly back to Branch s that contributed to achieving the target based on their proportional efforts. This enabled them to directly benefit the members through funding various events or purchasing equipment at a local level. We are also privileged in the sponsorship we receive from Monash Veterinary Clinic. The clinic has been well known to the members of the club for many years, with many attending for as long as they have been members. Monash Veterinary Clinic is both a major sponsor of the Club as well as friend of the breed. Not only do they provide financial consideration, the partnership and long term association has built a foundation of trust and reliability, with many members continuing to utilise their services. I am pleased to announce that Royal Canin is on board for the 2018 year which you would have realised from looking at your membership badges and is on board to sponsor the GSDCA National to be hosted by us in At the time of this report we have yet to formalise a relationship with Monash Veterinary Clinic for As occurs every year, the National Breed Commission meeting was held. At a National level, working groups were formed to deal with the various issues raised through the Breed forum the previous year. While some progress had been made, significantly the two Breed Surveyor system, Breed Surveyors contract and Judges Contract, other items were still a work in progress. In addition to the NBC meeting, this year saw an extraordinary meeting held to discuss the WUSV (World Union of German Shepherd Clubs) Harmonisation Program. While 2016 saw the GSDCV face an external threat in the Victorian proposed puppy farm legislation where we banded together, sadly 2017 saw us face an internal and therefore a much more dangerous threat in the harmonisation program put forward by the WUSV. The danger was not in the program itself, rather in the way it was put forward by the WUSV. Without regard for our history or structure, without regard for our achievements, limitations or even wishes, with the threat of disaffiliation if we didn t comply. The division that was caused, personal attacks on social media showed a viciousness that I was ashamed off. Certainly, debate is healthy in any organisation. For it to be healthy it must be accompanied by truth, transparency and healthy respect for other opinions and a belief that the way forward is for the benefit of the many not just the few. The way the program was put forward by the WUSV through the Continental Director Oceania (a position that was appointed over the objections of our National Council I might add) did not fit these criteria. As many here know, a Special General Meeting was called to discuss the program and the GSDCV voted in favour of many of the items put forward, and so did the majority of Clubs around Australia. The outcome of the vote and subsequent meeting on a National level was to put forward a submission to the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) to support and sanction the introduction of dog-sport as a legitimate event. The proposal, a rather lengthy and detailed one was rejected. This was conveyed to the WUSV, who rather than applaud our efforts conveyed to us that a separate organisation would be set up in Australia to oversee dog-sport. This I would argue is no way to treat an organisation such as the GSDCA and its affiliates that have for so long endeavoured to promote, protect and advance the breed as we have. The cliché together we stand, divided we fall comes to mind. Significantly, whether as a result of the WHP or not, the FCI has ended its agreement with the WUSV regarding the WUSV being able to certify its own judges. Where this leaves us at this stage I do not know. Regardless of the disharmony it caused, the WHP is progressing and we are working towards the various elements in-line with the proposed timelines. With the Character and Working Assessment passed in 2016, 2017 saw its implementation and a significant uptake by the membership as they became more familiar with it and the event was fully implemented. This scheme, designed to test as the titles suggests, the character and working ability of the German Shepherd, who as we all know is the swiss army knife of the canine world, able to undertake many different tasks extremely well. Where this test may lead, at this stage is unknown, hopefully it is fine tuned to provide feedback to the many members who take part and may yet be used to assess the traits that are passed on from a sire and dam. As well as providing information to the public, showcasing the breed goes a significant way to dispel any negative thoughts and highlight how well behaved the GSD can be. In addition to non-canine events like The Royal Children s Hospital Good Friday Appeal which we have taken part in for the last 34 years, Branches attending expos or a large scale event, such as the Victoria Canine Association Big Dog Day Out held at KCC Park where the GSDCV runs the only participation event for attendees by having a tunnel run for people and their dogs, we have numerous members who tackle things on a local level and do things quietly without fuss behind the scenes. Whether it is story dogs where school children read to the dogs or visits to aged care facilities, young and old alike, their day is brightened by a visit from a fury friend. The participation of the GSD in these events is integral to the promotion of the breed, I cannot thank the team and the members enough for their efforts in this area. As most of us know, the GSDCV has a long and proud history. Many will recall that I have often said that we owe where we are today to those that have come before us. This was certainly highlighted this year with a number of GSDCV Branches celebrating significant milestones in their and therefore the Clubs history. Our Skye Branch, located as we know at the centre of the dog world at KCC Park celebrated their 30 th anniversary. Not to be out done (and to some of our long term members, 30 years is not long at all) 3 of our other Branches celebrated their 40 th Anniversary. Our Eastern Branch, our Western Branch and our Ballarat Branch all celebrated an outstanding 40 years of operation. Certainly, it has not been smooth sailing the entire time, there has been ups and downs as is expected: they never gave up and have persevered and are stronger today than they have been in many years. Ballarat celebrating 40 years has further significance when you take into account that it March 25, 2018 Page 13

was our first Branch, who knows where we would be if it was never started. One of the downsides of such significant milestones is that eventually, those that have served for so very long decide that they can no longer. During the year, Fran Farley resigned as a Breed Surveyor, being one of the inaugural Surveyors, many of us have grown up with Fran, and to me it seems the end of an era. No doubt, Fran will continue to impart knowledge and wisdom gained from years of experience. James Rodger has gone one step further and has handed in his ANKC Judges licence and therefore retired as Judge as well as a Surveyor. What many may not know is that James with Louisa started the Ballarat Branch, being the inaugural Branch Manager and Secretary and we have James to thank for our structure and therefore for where we are today. While we have already honoured both James and Fran at the Champ Show and Trial held at the Working Dog Show, our debt to these people cannot be understated, and I would like to again extend our thanks for all the effort they have put in over the many years they have served the Club and the Breed, both at a State and National level. Footnote: As this annual report goes to print we are saddened to hear that James Rodger and Phil Vincent have passed away. We recognise the numerous positions in the organisation that both had undertaken with gusto. Especially taking on the prestigious role of President GSDCV. James held the position of President from 1982 to 1986, and Phil from 2003 till mid They will both be greatly missed. As I have said, our Club has a proud and long history. All that it has achieved has been through a willingness to work together, a belief that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, that no one part is more important than the other and that each contribution to the mission and vision of the GSDCV is as valuable as any other. Continuing in this way will ensure our growth, strength and reputation that I believe is the envy of the canine fraternity. VALE As happens every year, we lose a number of dear friends, whether they be members or part of the Clubs extended family. While I normally do not mention those that have passed by name to avoid any additional heart ache, this time I must make an exception. Sadly, this past year we lost our dear friend, Life Member and Patron of the GSDCV, Tom Luxton. Tom s passing came as a shock to many, with Tom & Ginny expected for lunch at our State Breed. The memorial that was arranged to honour Tom would have brought a smile to his face, with people pulling together as they do in time of need and I am sure that Tom was looking down on the honour guard of our breed lining the entrance into our Clubrooms. Thank you to the handlers and their GSDs, they looked so elegant and noble. Tom was such a big part of the Club, helping to lift the ban in the 70 s as well as mentor to many over the years, certainly to any President that took the time to talk to him. I am proud and privileged to have known Tom and to have had his support. The position of Patron is not one that will be offered to just anyone, nor in haste. Tom left some big shoes to fill. Once a suitable time has passed, we will begin the task of selecting candidates for the role. On behalf of the Management Committee, members and myself personally, I extend our condolences to the family and friends who have lost loved ones throughout the year. In addition to the pain that each loss causes us, the loss is also in the history that is missed, when we do not take the time to listen to the stories they have to tell. True this can be said of many in our society, it is especially poignant as we come to a point where many that faced the struggles that built the Club begin to leave us. The world becomes a smaller place each and every day and less and less the effort that one must undertake to achieve a result is undertaken. The acceptance of the GSD in today s society is only possible with the efforts of those that have left us and the work we undertake in their spirit. The struggle that took place to ensure we have the freedoms we enjoy today can never be forgotten, nor taken for granted. An organisation such as ours could not operate effectively without a number of key roles. I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some key individuals and extend my thanks for their efforts. Without delving to deeply into their portfolios, as I am certain they will present their report much more comprehensively then I, bringing to light the roles they hold: Vice President: Anthony (Tony) Mercieca Tony undertook the role of Vice President during 2017 and quickly showed himself to be an integral part of the Executive and Management Committee. Tony not only assisted in the various duties the Presidential roles entail, he presented a keen insight as well as taking the lead on various issues, stamping his own unique style on numerous projects. Tony s analytical mindset has continued to evolve throughout the year, providing a counterpoint to myself as well as the rest of the Executive and Branch Managers. Tony is the logical choice for President and I am certain he will do the role proud. 2 nd Vice President: Louisa Rodger Louisa continued in the role held for many years, in addition to assisting both Tony and myself in Presidential duties during 2017, Louisa took on many other tasks, always willing to lend a hand, both in a leadership and support role. Unfortunately, Louisa was unable to continue in her duties and resigned from the position of 2 nd Vice President during the year due to personal issues. We wish Louisa well. March 25, 2018 Page 14

Secretary: Mel Siktars Mel continued in the role of Club Secretary in To be Club Secretary for the GSDCV is arguably one of the most time consuming roles in the organisation. Through her own dedication and passion Mel has grown into the role, enhancing her skills and knowledge about Club operations and is making the position her own. Offering not only administrative assistance to Tony and myself, Mel is a valued member of the Executive offering counsel and advice on the numerous issues that we face. During the year, Mel unfortunately had to take a short leave of absence due to personal reasons. Mel is not continuing in the role for 2018, instead moving onto the Breed Affairs committee where she intends to take on the Secretary role. Assistant Secretary: Barbara Blythe Barbara was appointed to the role of Assistant Secretary during the year, the work of Barbara and the assistance that she provides to Melissa is invaluable Not only minute secretary for the management committee, Barbara assist in many other facets of the administration providing valuable support to Mel and many others in her numerous roles, Barbara is a true asset to the Club and the Breed. Treasurer: Fiona Henderson We are extremely thankful that Fiona continued in the role of Club Treasurer during 2017 after taking it on 2015 and As is the role of Club Secretary, the role of Club Treasurer for a Club the size of ours is time consuming. Exactly how much time is hard to tell as Fiona makes it look effortless though I am sure that it is not. Not only dealing with the overall Club finances, which we all know for a volunteer organisation are not insignificant. Fiona as part of the Executive and the leadership group brings her own special skill set and personality to the varied issues that face us. With the assistance of Dom Cafari and Pam Anderton as Assistant Treasurers, both extremely capable in their own right, Fiona is instrumental in dealing with our fiscal responsibility, meeting our legal and moral responsibilities, we have not had such a capable Treasurer in many years. It certainly puts my mind at ease and it should yours as well that Fiona is continuing in the role for Breed Affairs Administrator: Ian Urie The Breed Affairs post is varied and can be all encompassing; in many ways, nearly everything we do is a Breed related issue. Ian has again returned to the role and has continued to keep the Breed Affairs meetings inclusive and open to all points of view. Comprising the Breed Liaison Officers from each Branch as well as the resident GSDCV Breed Surveyors, there are as nearly as many opinions as there are members. The role of Breed Affairs Administrator, is one that has many complex facets, whether it be offering counsel as part of the Executive, partaking in discussion at meetings of the Management Committee or taking care of the portfolio in general, Ian is a dedicated member of the Executive and invaluable to the running of our organisation. Obedience Training Administrator: Les Rudling Taking on the role of Obedience Training Administrator during 2017 after serving as assistant for several years. With the vast majority of our members being only interested in a well-behaved GSD, the role of the Chair of OTC is a complex and extremely important role. Les has many projects underway, some a continuation of projects already started, others instigated during his first tenure as Chair. I am certain that Les will continue his good work, bringing to fruition those projects and no doubt starting others, all designed to better serve the breed and the club. Branches: The GSDCV has the largest membership base of all the German Shepherd Dog Clubs in Australia and the Branch Structure is the face of the GSDCV. To be honest, we must accept that many members see their branch as the Club, which is fine as it is the nurturing at the Branch level that develops into a commitment to the breed and a desire to help, first at a local level then hopefully in a more global aspect. The Management Committee is where the Executive and Branch Managers come together to provide leadership and direction for the future of the GSDCV and the German Shepherd Dog. It is here that we come together as ONE CLUB, with an equality of votes regardless of position. I would like to thank the Branch Managers for your commitment and dedication to the Club as a whole and to your own Branch. There are numerous people and groups of people within each Branch that I wish to thank. The Obedience and Show Instructors, without which there would be little reason for the members to turn up each week, the Branch committees that provide the framework for the Instructors and members to get together, and of course, the members themselves. While we are the German Shepherd Dog Club, we really are about people. If we did not have any members we would not have a Club. Thank you one and all. March 25, 2018 Page 15

Breed Surveyors: The Breed Survey Panel in Victoria provides valuable breed advice and guidance to our members as well as providing counsel to the organisation on the many and varied issue that arise. With the resignation of James and Fran from the Victorian Survey Panel, the challenge is on to develop future Judges and Surveyors. The process has begun somewhat with Nicky McDermott on her way to becoming a Judge and Andrew Jones on his way to becoming a surveyor. Breed knowledge and breed success are not the only attributes that are needed, a dedication to the Club and its success, a willingness to serve the greater good rather than yourself are both an integral attribute of a Breed Surveyor, attributes both Nicky and Andrew have shown. Upcoming challenges will not only be in developing future Judges and Surveyors, it will be in providing direction in a world where information is available in an instant from across the globe and everybody believes they know best, a challenge we all face. Not only do they provide direction to the members at Breed Survey, the knowledge they bestow at a Breed Affairs meeting is essential to the decision making process we follow, through their experience and the peer group they provide a connection to the Breed throughout Australia. Alistair Henderson has again led the Victorian Surveyor Panel, together with Gillian Cafari, organising the various aspect that go into making a survey day, as well as the behind the scenes work that goes into co-ordinating the survey panel. I thank him for his work and dedication. Gillian Cafari continued in the role of Breed Survey Registrar, a job held for a considerable length of time, and one that no doubt requires many hours of work behind the scenes, not just what we see on Survey Day. Thank you, Gill for the effort and dedication. Show Committee David Organ continued in the role of Show Manager in 2017, doing a great job. Together with the Show Secretary, Cristine Begbie and the assistance of numerous others, including Amanda Barr. David has managed to undertake the many shows that occurred during the year and planned for 2018 as well as beginning work on the 2019 GSDCA National Show and Trial Undoubtedly, there has been a great deal of behind the scene help offered by the likes of Vince Tantaro and Ian Urie who have held the role in the past. While there is a great deal of planning that takes place prior to an event, we cannot underemphasise the workload that occurs on the day. From setting up and pulling down the rings to the marshalling and stenography, a great deal of work occurs often by a very few and dedicated members, often with many just watching on. To those that get in and help, I say a huge thank you. We also thank Vince for hosting and playing taxi service for visiting Judges, not only offering his time but at times his home. This can be a time consuming and thankless task. So we thank Vince for his superb handling of the Judges, which makes Victoria a place that the overseas as well as interstate Judges want to visit. Trial Manager: OTC & Others With no specific member to take on the role of Trial Manager, the organisation often fell to OTC as a whole. Hopefully with the change that is proposed, there may be others that many undertake the position on a full time basis. Position Holders: The many Position Holders who take on the various tasks for the Club are extremely valuable in the roles they perform. Without these people we could not provide the services we currently do. Shepherd News and Webmaster: Jacinta Poole As we know Jacinta wears many hats within the GSDCV: Webmaster, Shepherd News Editor, Facebook Administrator, Photographer, all round technical expert as well as Branch Manager. It is hard to quantify and properly thank Jacinta for the sheer volume of effort put into the Club. We are extremely lucky to have someone of her calibre willing to assist in the many ways that she does. The publication of the Shepherd News, the Shepherd E-News, the Club Facebook page and the Club website, as well as assisting various position holders with technical help has placed the Club in an enviable position and at the forefront of the social media revolution. I also extend the Clubs thanks to Rob Filardo who continues to work on the technical issues that pop up from time to time as well as Grant and Lin Milne for providing the software to power the FAQ section of our website, a world class system and an integral aspect of the success of our website. Membership Officer: Helena Walter The Club Membership Officers role is in line with the positions of Club Secretary and Club Treasurer for the sheer volume of work encompassing a single position within the organisation. Taking on the position in 2016, Helene continued in 2017, dealing with the complexities and demands of the role, especially with the changes that resulted from the update to the Club Constitution. Helena ensures the smooth processing of membership applications and renewals as well as dealing with the numerous issues that arise, often liaising with the Branch Membership Officers to seek a quick resolution. Helena has brought her own charm and personality to the position, providing valuable information to the Management Committee, which we can use as one metric to gauge the health of the Branch. Thank you, Helena, for the great work over the year. March 25, 2018 Page 16

Rob Filardo has provided technical assistance in the background to ensure the membership database programming remains up to date. Promotion Officer: No Position Holder Without a specific member in the role, the duties fell to the Management Committee as a whole often relying on local branch s to promote the organisation. We cannot manage the promotional aspect of the GSDCV alone, the numerous members that undertake to promote the breed whenever they are in public, with their well-behaved and socialised GSDs walking down the street or taking part in structured events, these are our true ambassadors and I thank you. Demo Team Manager: No Position Holder Whilst there was no specific Demo Team Manager, some Branch s did have a demo team in place which provided canine demonstrations as needed. Thank you to you and your GSDs. Publicity: No Position Holder. During 2017, there was no specific member filling the role of Publicity Officer, and the various stories were handled by numerous members. I thank you to all that contributed. Royal Children s Good Friday Appeal: For the past 34 years the Club has supported the Royal Children s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. The 2017 collection raised $27,619.45, an outstanding effort. This has bought the overall collection to $576,167 a huge amount. As has been the case since the beginning, the members of Western Branch have made up the majority of people helping out on the day whether it be manning corners or assisting in other ways. For a number of years, many other GSDCV Branches have taken part, claiming their corners with some like Eastern Branch getting in the spirit of the event by dressing up in Bunny suits. The Appeal holds a significant place in the hearts of Victorians, the saturation coverage the event is given ensures that at some point during the day we are certain to be seen. While we appreciate the publicity, the main point of the day is the children and the funds that can be raised for their well-being. This was the focus of the instigators of our participation so many years ago: Bernie Lester and Lyn Pickering, with Dom Cafari joining in a few years later. Thanks to all three for their dedication enthusiasm and support each year for this worthwhile event. A very big thank you to the many members and their families who assist and rattle the tins. Congratulations to all members who are receiving awards today. These awards are the recognition for your hard work and dedication, sometimes spaning years. You should be proud of your achievements. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Val Moody for compiling the 2017 Annual Report. I reiterate what I have said in the past and will continue to say, thank you to the unsung hero of the GSDCV, I know you are out there. Those members who without fuss and fanfare, with no position attached to their name, at the Branches, Shows, and Trials, those members that get in and do what s needed. Not because they must, or it is their job, but because it needs to be done and they want to. To them I say a very big thank you. Thank you also to the Executive and Management Committee, for their participation and support throughout the year. To the Branches for the hospitality they have shown Lin and I when we visit. We have always been made to feel welcome, and that we are a part of their Branch. I have thoroughly enjoyed this past year and look forward to tomorrow. In my opening paragraph, I said this is my last report as President. The decision to not renominate for the position of President was not one I took lightly, as with all aspects of life, there have been good times and bad, regardless of what was occurring, it was an honour to serve and I was always proud to say I am President of the GSDCV. There were no perks, I lined up like every one of you to buy my coffee, snag or pay for training, there are only obligations. Anyone who takes on a position for the right reasons understands this in their soul. I have had support from many people over the years, a list too long to mention. If you believe that I have not done the job that should have been done, then that s on me. If you believe that I have done the position proud then there are few names I would like to highlight: Barbara Blythe and Jenny Yuen, who always encouraged me to be the better person, to lead and always be the President, regardless of what was happening, Jacinta Poole, who came through the ranks of Branch Manager with me, showed me how to see the bigger picture, always available to discuss things from a different point of view, and Frank & Val Moody, who were my mentors in my early days as a Branch Manager and then Vice President/President, someone who I can discuss things with that only a President can really understand. These people have made me the President I am. Words cannot truly express what I feel, suffice to say that I am truly grateful for their friendship and support over the years. March 25, 2018 Page 17

In closing, I would like to thank my wife Lin for the tremendous support she has provided to me over the past twelve months and all the years in my tenure as President, without Lin s backing I would not have been President in the first instance, certainly not after the first year. The role is not a nine to five job, there really is no down time. There have been times when decisions have weighed heavily, and her steady support has enabled me to get through. I thank everyone here today, and for those that have helped and supported me in the past, I ask that for the good of the Club and the breed you show Tony the same level of support and commitment. VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT - Mr Tony Mercieca The year that was 2017 as Vice President of the GSDCV started for me back in late 2016 when I decided that it was time to give back to our club and stand for the position with the view of offering a management succession plan. Looking back over the year, we as a club have come through a number of challenges, probably none bigger and more contentious than the WUSV Harmonisation Program. While there was much discussion and debate regarding a number of the proposed elements, some of it heated and some of it ill informed, I was pleased to see the membership turn out at the SGM to vote, and even more so to see the level of respect given by all sides at this meeting. My hope is that this will continue through the implementation process over the coming months and years. Locally we have had very many points on the agenda - far too many to attempt to list, with the huge majority being discussed, actioned and completed in good time while others are still in progress. For me, 2017 was an apprenticeship year being ably guided by our Club President, Executive and Management Committee as well as various members of our other essential committees such as OTC, Breed Affairs and our Show Committee. I have come to understand more than ever how fortunate the GSDCV is to have a number of extremely dedicated individuals and groups who do an amazing amount of work, all voluntary, and usually behind the scenes for nothing more than a smile and a thank you. Many of these people wear more than one hat for our Club and its members. They sometimes attend several meetings in a month, not to mention the many hours of work they take on and complete between meetings. This is on top of what they do at their local Branch, or with their own dog. Without these people, our club would be lost - THANK YOU. As Vice President in 2017 I have tried to assist our President, Vince Ebejer and to offer my thoughts and support where needed. Looking forward to 2018, we have a great deal to get on with as a Club. We have our usual caper of Shows, Trials and Public Events to manage. Planning for the 2019 GSDCA National has already started, but there is still a long way to go. Our Branches are generally in good shape, however I feel that a few will need a little extra support and encouragement in 2018 to improve on their position. As usual, we will need more of our members to put their hand up at branch level, and for some of our branch leadership to consider stepping up and offering more assistance at Club level to even out the workload. While 2018 is not exactly a blank book; there are many unwritten pages, which offer us the opportunity to be even better. It is certain that we will continue to face both old and new challenges, but these too will offer opportunities to improve. I doubt that we will get everything perfectly right the first time, every time, however these too will present opportunities. We have many able and dedicated contributors in our Club my hope is that we can all give these people our support and assistance in 2018 and beyond. 2 nd VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT - N/A As Louisa Rodger was unable to remain in the role of 2 nd Vice President during 2017, the GSDCV accepted her resignation on the 1 st June Based on this, a report will not be submitted by Louisa, however we thank her most sincerely for all the work that she entailed, wish her the very best with all future endeavours and look forward to seeing her at future events. 19 SECRETARY Mrs Mel Siktars I am pleased to submit my report as Club Secretary but this will be my final report as Secretary. I have enjoyed my time at this Club, but it is time for me to step down and dedicate my time to some family matters. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the GSDCV Management Committee, and Executive. I would like to thank my Assistant Secretary/ Minute Secretary, Barb Blythe for not only stepping in for me for the months I was off due to a knee replacement but for everything you do to assist me and this Club. You are an absolute gem. Vince & Tony, thank you for helping with the Secretary duties the past couple of months. Fiona, Ian & Les, it s been lovely working with you all. And lastly Val Moody, thank you for putting this AGM report together for us whist I was recovering from surgery. It is very much appreciated. To all those Members and their dogs, who are in the Public eye; the Service dogs, the Story Dogs, the Therapy dogs, the Delta dogs, the Hospital/ Nursing Home dogs, those who attend School Fetes, Demo Teams etc. that freely give their time to ensure the positive image of the German Shepherd Dog, we thank you! I wish the Club all the best for the future and welcome the new GSDCV Secretary for TREASURER S REPORT Mrs Fiona Henderson I am pleased to present the Financials for the 2017 year. Again, I would like to thank Jacinta Poole, Pam Anderton and Dom Cafari for their assistance in preparation of the accounts for lodgement with the auditor. The task of Treasurer is a very onerous and it would be very difficult to prepare the Financials in time without their assistance. The majority of Branch Treasurers have also performed their duties very well and in a timely manner. I also thank the Membership Officer Helena Walter for her timely reporting of the breakdowns of information and help with reconciliations. It is pleasing to report that the Club improved its financial position over the year. The majority of Branches had healthy results and Membership numbers are steady. I refer you to the auditor s report and financial statements for 2017 in the following pages. March 25, 2018 Page 19

Mrs. Julie Urie (Skye) Mrs. Chris Auwema (SSB) Mrs Michelle Mercieca (Western) Mrs Martine Burgess (Wodonga) I wish to thank all members of the Breed Affairs committee, especially my Assistant Alastair Henderson and our wonderful Secretary Barbara Blythe, as well as the Registrars, Breed Surveyors, Position Holders, Breed Liaison Officers, Tattooists, and Show Instructors for the work you have done on behalf of the Club during the year. Other dedicated committee members are Judy Eppinger who holds the positions of Puppy Listings as well as Rehoming Officer, and Karen Ballantyne, who has been our HD and ED Registrar for more than 25 years. Gillian Cafari also holds two positions, as Assistant Hip and Elbow Registrar and Breed Survey Registrar. Michelle Mercieca is retiring as Show Training Administrator, the position she has held since 2016, and Julie Urie is also retiring from the C&WA Registrar position. Thank you to all for your generous voluntary work and assistance to our Club members. At a mid-year Special General Meeting of the Council a majority decision was made by the Member Clubs to discontinue the GSDCA Tattoo Scheme. A presentation was made at the November Championship show to Michael Blunt, who has held the position of GSDCV Tattoo Registrar since Thank you also to all the retiring Tattoo Officers for your service to the club and our breeders. Special presentations were also made to James Rodger and Fran Farley, who have both retired as Breed Surveyors after many, many years of service. GSDCA Breeders Achievement - Gold, Silver and Bronze medallions were presented to 11 Victorian breeders for results in the HD and ED schemes. Thanks are also due to the Show Committee, led by David Organ and Cristine Begbie, who put on some very well run events throughout the year, starting with the March Championship show where Heather MacDonald from UK attracted an entry of 192 dogs from all over Australia. We acknowledge support again in 2017 from our major sponsors Royal Canin and Monash Vet Clinic. Thanks also to David Jones for donation of some very nice raffle prizes and trophies. A National Show and Trial Committee has been established to start planning for the 2019 National to be held in Victoria. Victorian exhibitors had success at the 44 th National Show held in Brisbane, including both Junior Handler class winners, the Dual Performance winner, and several conformation class winners and high place-getters. Nicky McDermott and Edwina Neale joined the VCA Judges Training scheme and we look forward to their future qualification and appointment as GSD specialist judges. Nicky had her first appointment at our 2017 Open Show. I thank all of the Victorian Breed Survey panel for their services during the year, especially the State Breed Survey Coordinator Alastair Henderson, and Breed Survey Registrar Gillian Cafari. We started the year with seven Surveyors and now have five since the retirement of Fran Farley and James Rodger. GSDCV conducted six Breed Surveys, two Structural Assessments and two Character and Working Assessments during the last year. The VCA Judges Training Scheme was supported again this year by GSDs attending practical nights and judges workshops led by Vince Tantaro and Jenny Yuen. I thank those members who made the effort to bring their dogs out to these evenings. Jenny also delivered the Breed Lecture for aspiring GSDCV Instructors. I represented the GSDCV at the annual GSDCA Breed Commission and Judges Committee meetings in Adelaide. Andrew Jones was accepted at the NBC meeting as an aspiring Breed Surveyor. I also attended the Special General Meeting regarding the WUSV World Harmonisation Program, where our President Vince Ebejer represented the Club. Whilst the C&WA scheme continues at present, we await with interest the implementation in stages of the WUSV Harmonisation schemes, beginning with the ZAP Puppy Test in 2019 and BH/AD in 2020, which will become pre-requisites for dogs to be Breed Surveyed in the future. March 25, 2018 Page 22

This coming year I hope to see more breeders, general members, and especially Breed Surveyors and Branch representatives attending our Breed Affairs meetings. Whilst voting is only available to Branch Liaison Officers, elected position holders and Breed Surveyors, all members are welcome to come along and join in the discussions. The GSDCV is a breed based Club, and breed issues are as important as training of dogs. Breed Affairs Position Holders Reports: Assistant Breed Affairs Administrator Mr. Alastair Henderson This year saw a lot of activity within the club at Breed Affairs level with the WUSV Harmonisation which was supported by the members Australia wide. This will involve many things within the breed that will need to be done differently so that our dogs are prepared for new requirements that come with this program. This program I feel will be of benefit to the breed in the future in the way of character improvement and better access to overseas dogs information through the stud book. I feel we should be using this program to highlight our wish to work with governments and Kennel Controls by using breeding stock with better character. Along with our breed improvement schemes we show that we are ahead of the other breeds and flowing on to an improved perception of the breed to the general public. In this position I have only attended a couple of meetings as my work has stopped me from attending and wish to thank Ian Urie and the rest of those position holders for their efforts in Hoping 2018 is a good one. Show Training Administrator Mrs Michelle Mercieca Unfortunately, no new show aspirers went through the instructor training scheme in I have spoken to a few suitable people and hopefully they will consider pursuing it in the near future. The Show Manual was updated in 2017 to reflect the recent changes to the breed schemes in regard to changes to Breed Survey classification and the removal of tattooing as a recognised scheme. Thank you to all show instructors for their work throughout the year. I will not be re standing in Show Manager s Report Mr David Organ The show year of 2017 has been a big year, starting with: The Ballarat Show in Feb judged by Greg Green The Twilight Shows also in Feb held at Bulla judged by both Susan Bruno and Ian Cooke. The Champ Show in March judged by Heather McDonald who also gave an excellent talk on GSD's. Our State Breed Exhibition held in May judged by both Ian Urie (Open Classes of LSC and SC) and Vince Tantaro (all of the younger classes). A lot of us then travelled to the National in Queensland with a lot of very good results (A long drive with dogs). Lilydale Show judged by Jo Cathie and the Breed Exhibition judged by Mel Lloyd held in August was next. The GSDCV Champ Show came next with Robyn Knuckey and John Lijffijt judging this one and the Working Dog Show held in November. Then finally our own Nicky McDermott judging her first Open show which was held in December. All shows showed very good attendance with very good numbers now staying after the shows for presentations. The National Show Committee was formed for our 2019 National with most positions filled (still looking for catering and social organisers though). The 2018 show calendar is also showing to be a very big year with the 100th Championship Show being held in November. On behalf of the GSDCV Show Committee we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year. State Breed Survey Co-ordinator Mr Alastair Henderson This year 5 surveys held were held at Show Branch and one at Western Branch. In the future I would suggest that 5 surveys should remain at Show Branch and one other be shared amongst other branches who apply to have it saw the implementation of the one classification for breed survey replacing class 1 and class 2. Another change was that the dogs are not placed in any order other than males followed by females. This format of not placing the animals in a show format of first to last appeared to encourage & increase the numbers presented. Whether it was this change in the system or just more dogs being eligible there was an increase in dogs presented and 42 dogs were surveyed. March 25, 2018 Page 23

This year it was sad to see two experienced Breed Surveyors namely Fran Farley and James Rodger deciding to call it a day as Breed Surveyors. We thank them very much for their valuable contribution. A thank you to all our surveyors this year Jenny Yuen, Greg Green, Ian Urie, Vince Tantaro and our 2 retirees Fran and James, without your input survey would not happen and I thank you all. Last but not least is our registrar Gill Cafari who does a brilliant job of taking entries for survey, checking paperwork, presenting the breeding of each animal at survey for the surveyors Thank you Gill. To the breeders and owners who have presented their dogs for survey this year we thank you and hope the number continue in Breed Survey Registrar Mrs Gillian Cafari Another year has flown by and it s time to reflect on the year that was. I would like to congratulate Alastair Henderson, our State Breed Survey Coordinator, together with all the Victorian Surveyors on another successful survey year. It is encouraging to note the total number of animals classified increased by eight compared to Congratulations also to the breeders and owners of animals that gained Classification during the year. The Classifications of Class I or Class II were discontinued mid-year in favour of one classification and from the 1 st July 2017 animals are now referred to as being Breed Survey Classified (BSC). Following is a table showing the results by classification of animals presented at Victorian surveys for the year ended December CLASSIFIED IMPORT CLASS I CLASS II CLASSIFIED FAIL TOTAL (from 01/07/2017) DOGS DOGS (LSC) BITCHES BITCH (LSC) TOTAL The number of animals assessed by each surveyor is as follows: Mr Greg Green 10 Mrs Jenny Yuen 9 Mr Ian Urie 8 Mrs Fran Farley 5 Mr Alastair Henderson 5 Mr Vince Tantaro 5 Mr James Rodger Before years end two of our long standing Surveyors Fran Farley and James Rodger - decided to retire. Both Fran and James have been a huge part of the Victorian Survey scene for so many years, sharing their breed knowledge, advice and recommendations for our blood lines and contributing to the future direction of the GSD in Victoria. Thank you for your professionalism, insight and dedication to our breed as our Surveyors. I will miss you both immensely, thank you for your support and best wishes for the future. I would like to thank Alastair, together with all the Breed Surveyors for their continued support throughout the year, for without them there would not be a survey scheme. This dedicated team ensure their knowledge and experience about the German Shepherd Dog is available to all enthusiasts. My thanks also to the Speciality Show Branch and Western Branch for hosting our Surveys and for the hospitality shown to the Surveyors and myself. I also thank all the breeders and owners who support this GSDCA Breed Improvement Scheme and wish you all a successful year in March 25, 2018 Page 24

Hip/Elbow Dysplasia Registrar Mrs Karen Ballantyne Assistant Hip/Elbow Dysplasia Registrar - Mrs Gillian Cafari: GSDCV members and breeders continue to demonstrate their commitment to breed improvement by participating in the GSDCA National Hip & Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme. During 2017, 98 HD/ED application forms (contracts) were issued to GSDCV members. Of these, 91 forms were issued for hip and elbow assessment; 4 forms were for hips only, and 3 forms were for hip only assessment due to poor positioning (tilted) in previously submitted x-rays. For comparison: In 1993, 208 forms were issued to Victorian members; In 2003, 126 HD/ED forms were issued to Victorian members. Of these, 121 forms were issued for Hip and Elbow assessment and 5 were for Elbow assessment only; In 2013, 91 forms were issued to Victorian members. Of these, 88 forms were issued for Hip and Elbow assessment and 3 were for Hip assessment only; In 2014,101 forms were issued to Victorian members. Of these, 98 forms were issued for Hip and Elbow assessment, and 3 were for Hip assessment only; and In 2015, 108 forms were issued to Victorian members. Of these, 102 forms were issued for Hip and Elbow assessment, 2 were for Hip assessment only and 1 was for Elbow assessment only: and In 2016, 94 forms were issued to Victorian members. Of these, 87 forms were issued for Hip and Elbow assessment, 7 were for Hip assessment only and 1 was for Hip and Elbow assessment due to poor positioning (tilted) in previously submitted x-rays. While the number of HD/ED forms (contracts) issued in 2017 is marginally higher than in 2016, this may be due in part to the re-assessment of x-rays for dogs where the initial positioning may have been poor or tilted. Overall, the numbers of forms issued over the last 5 years has been relatively stable. The increasing veterinary costs of x-raying continues to be a barrier, perhaps leading to less x-raying of litter-mates being undertaken for breeder and stud dog information purposes than in years past. Congratulations to the following Victorian Breeders who were presented with GSDCA National Breeders Hip and Elbow Achievement Awards (HD/ED Medallions) at the 45th National Show and Trial held at Durack, Queensland in May Gold Medallion - Kennels that have bred 50 animals that have been awarded an A stamp through the GSDCA Hip/Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme: Vanharley, D.Colson Gold Medallion - Kennels that have bred 50 animals that have been awarded a Z stamp through the GSDCA Hip/Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme: Awatea, F.Grigons Vanharley, D.Colson Silver Medallion - Kennels that have bred 25 animals that have been awarded an A stamp through the GSDCA Hip/Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme: Zandrac, A&R Jones Jayshell, N.McDermott Kooronya, C.Gayton-Newson Silver Medallion - Kennels that have bred 25 animals that have been awarded a Z stamp through the GSDCA Hip/Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme: Willmaurs, W&M Goodwin Jayshell, N.McDermott Kooronya, C.Gayton-Newson Bronze Medallion - Kennels that have bred 10 animals that have been awarded an A stamp through the GSDCA Hip/Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme: Karastro, D.Berghofer Misteishah, P.Vincent Vonisar, V.Dobson Bronze Medallion - Kennels that have bred 10 animals that have been awarded a Z stamp through the GSDCA Hip/Elbow Dysplasia Control Scheme: Hasenway, J.Haase Vonisar, V.Dobson Vonforell, K.Kotsopoulos March 25, 2018 Page 25

We would like to thank the GSDCA National Hip and Elbow Control Scheme Registrar, Doug West, and the National Treasurer, Jane Pike, for their support and friendly assistance during the year. Members really appreciate receiving their official A & Z stamp certificates so promptly after the pink slip. The direct banking of the fees we receive into the GSDCA account continues to run smoothly. There is no doubt that the strong support breeders and owners have demonstrated for the HD/ED scheme in the past is now reflected in the excellent hip/elbow results members are achieving. A high level of participation in the scheme is the only way Australian HD/ED scheme statistics can be representative of the producing abilities of individual sires. Breeders rely on representative and up-to-date statistics being available to support their selection of better hip and elbow producing sires. Good luck with your X-raying during Even if you don t intend to show or breed your GSD, by x-raying and submitting through the GSDCA Scheme you are providing valuable information to improve the soundness and health of the breed we all love. Tattoo Registrar Mr Michael Blunt: GSDCV Tattoo Registrar Michael Blunt Tattoo Officers Brank Auwema Michael Blunt Angela Bohdal Arlene Kerr Frank Moody Julie Urie NOTE: The GSDCA Member Clubs at the Special General Meeting held in July voted and agreed that the GSDCA Tattoo Scheme ceased on the 1 st July It is with sad regret that I submit my very last tattoo report as Victorian Tattoo Registrar. During the period of 1 st January 2017 to 31 st December 2017 we have tattooed a total 20 litters comprising of 132 puppies. I would like to thank all of the Tattoo Officers for all of their commitment throughout the many, many years supplying the service to the breeders of Victoria far and wide. I would also like to thank all the breeders that contributed to the scheme over the many years. Once again, I would like to thank the GSDCV and GSDCA for their continued support that I have received over the years. Puppy Listings Registrar Ms Judy Eppinger: The role of Puppy Listings continues to be very busy. The number of puppies available went down from 295 in 2015 to 161 in 2016, but holding now at 160. These figures don t reflect all puppies available as not all breeders are able to list on the GSDCV website or have other options for advertising their puppies. The more recent increases in the cost of purchasing a puppy has meant that some potentially good owners chose not to purchase a GSD not due to an inability to pay but a considered decision to not invest this amount of money in a puppy. And of course they can purchase a cheaper puppy through any of the other on-line services. This is becoming more and more common which I find very disappointing. My thanks again to webmaster Jacinta and the breeders who are so helpful in informing me when puppies are anticipated or have arrived. March 25, 2018 Page 26

ReHoming Officer Ms Judy Eppinger: Rehoming can be a very frustrating portfolio to manage either rewarding, frustrating or everything in between. But never boring. Of the 23 dogs listed for rehoming, only 11 were straightforward cases. Three of these were challenging as in each case the owner had died, one of which was very frustrating as it involved the dog being classified as part of the estate. In three further cases I was able to call on wonderful people who stepped up and rescued dogs in immediate need. Six dogs were withdrawn by their owners for a variety of reasons, two others were rehomed with the assistance of their breeders, while another owner discovered her dog could be sold! I stopped counting the number of calls received from owners wanting to rehome their dog quickly [mainly, but not all, Working line, Shepherd cross, looks like a Shepherd] as they were having a baby; moving; the dog bit a person; bit another dog; frightened the children; scared the neighbour; dug up the garden; barked a lot. Many of these calls were probably a consequence of other rehoming/rescue agencies being unable to take any more dogs. There are over 20 applications to rehome a dog unfortunately most dogs offered for rehoming have problems making them unsuitable for the majority of applicants. One new and very important change to the guidelines for rehoming a dog is that the dog must be neutered if it is to be listed with the GSDCV. Thank you to Chief Instructors who have helped along the way and to webmaster Jacinta in maintaining the Rehoming page. March 25, 2018 Page 27

OBEDIENCE TRAINING ADMINISTRATOR S REPORT Mr Les Rudling It is with pleasure that I present the Obedience Training Committee s Annual report for I would firstly like to acknowledge the dedication, commitment and professionalism of our Instructor team throughout the year; they have given freely of their knowledge and advice to our members, Thank you to all our Instructors for the important role they provide our members. My first year as the obedience Administrator, has been both busy and eventful with many trials to attend, branches to visit and functions within the club. I would like to firstly acknowledge and congratulate our Western, Eastern and Ballarat branches on celebrating their 40 th year anniversary during the year. And also to the Skye Branch on celebrating their 30 th anniversary. These are very important milestones in the history of our club and a testament to the many past and present Instructors and committee s that have positioned this club to be the professional organisation we enjoy today. It was great to see so many old photos, memorabilia and faces rom the past. Well done to everyone involved. On the trials scene we have had a very successful year running obedience, rally obedience and tracking trials. Though we did not have a trial manager several on the OTC Committee pulled together to ensure success. There have been several fantastic achievements in the trial ring and some excellent efforts with the tracking groups. During the year we ran seven trials: Championship Show & Obedience Trials in March, at KCC Park SBE Show & Trial in May at KCC Park Tracking Trial over the Queen s Birthday weekend at Haddon Rally Obedience Trial at KCC Park in July Double Obedience Trials at KCC Park in October Track & Search Trial on the 27 th & 28 th of October at KCC Park RTG5 Trial at KCC Park on the cup weekend in November. A lot of work goes into running these trials over the year such as organising judge s contracts, stewards, putting together schedules, collating entries, administration teams on trial day, catering for judges and officials, setting up rings and providing results. It was a big effort from our team working diligently behind the scenes to ensure we were able to provide such a successful calendar of events. I am indebted to our team for their assistance over the year. This year we restructured our Aspiring Instructors education course, all modules within the course are now set up in a power point presentation with lecturers for each module. Aspirers are now required to complete 3 assessments to finalise their theory lectures. The second year requires Aspirers to attend practical classes at five metropolitan branches to enable them to experience techniques from a variety of senior Instructors and to see how other branches manage larger classes. Thank you to all the branches for their role and assistance in providing this valuable experience for our Aspirers. Thank you to the lecturers that have assisted us throughout the year, and in providing us with their knowledge and expertise. I tested and passed six Aspirer Instructors for their Instructor Certificates during the year. It is pleasing to announce the following Instructors to our team. Michael Fajdiga from Malvern Michael Romanov from Eastern Ken Smith from Skye Lyn Hawksworth from Skye Veronica Filmer from Geelong Pam Anderton from Skye Congratulations to everyone and welcome to our team of qualified Instructors. During the year our committee tested and trialled a Gencon collar which is a head halter type collar to prevent a dog from continually pulling on the lead, following the trial and demonstration from the Eastern branch and discussions with Chief Instructors the Gencon collar was approved as a training tool for all branches. We introduced an electronic newsletter for our Instructor group in the later part of the year with information on upcoming trials, OTC updates, videos and general hints & information, we have had several positive comments on the two editions that have been distributed to date. All branches have maintained very good training numbers throughout the year with several branches showing a strong increase in training numbers. We continue to search for a Trial Manager; there is a comprehensive trial management manual and mentors are available to assist anyone interested in the position. Our committee has put forward a submission to management for a change to the March 25, 2018 Page 28

constitution removing the requirement that the trial manager needs to be an Instructor. This will give us the opportunity to broaden our search. While a lot of work has been completed in my first year, there is still many things to be completed or began in the year ahead. High on the agenda will be completing the revised Instructors Training Manual, finding a Trial Manager and building a team of assistants, we will also be encouraging more members to assist us in continuing the great work the club has achieved over the decades. Our committee meets monthly, alternating between our Western and Eastern branches. It is important that each branch has a representative at these meetings; if the Chief Instructor is unable to attend they can select their assistant or another Instructor to represent their branch. It is important that all branches have a role in the decision making process at OTC. In closing, I would like to thank the OTC Committee for their work and their assistance throughout the year it has been a pleasure to work so constructively with everyone on the committee, I also would like to thank the Management Committee for their support through the year and a special thank you to Carla Srb for her great work as my assistant, to Dearne Jackson for her assistance with the trials and Ken Smith for his work on the Aspirers course. I look forward to a productive Trial Managers Report written by Dearne Jackson Dearne Jackson was kind enough to compile the following information for the Trial Managers report for Please take the time to read this report as there are some very interesting statistics. The GSDCV Trials for 2017 showed a reduction in numbers trialing across all disciplines with a steady decline in obedience entries from 2014 (209 total entries) down to 108 in Rally Obedience has shown an increase in the number of entries for GSDCV trials Increase 2015 Increase 2016 Increase over 2017 Increase over Obedience trials Obedience Trial Entry by class over 2013 Obedience Trial Entry by class over 2014 Obedience Trial Entry by class 2015 Obedience Trial Entry by class 2016 Class CCD CD Open UD UDX Total Actu % CCD CD Open UD UDX Total Act % CCD CD Open UD UDX Total Act % CCD CD Open UD UDX Total Act % March Champ Show (RTB) Trial % % % % State Breed (RTB) Trial % % % % Open Double Trial (Afternoon) % % % % Open Double Trial (Evening) % % % % Nov Champ Show RTG Trial % % % % Total for Year % % % % 2014 Increase 2015 Increase 2016 Increase over 2017 Increase over Rally Trial Entries Rally Trial Entry by class over 2013 Rally Trial Entry by class over 2014 Rally Trial Entry by class 2015 Rally Trial Entry by class 2016 Class RN RAA RAB REA REB Total Act % RN RAA RAB REA REB Total Act % RN RAA RAB REA REB RM* Total Act % RN RAA RAB REA REB RM* Total Act % March Champ Show (RTB) Trial % % % % State Breed (RTB) Trial % % % % Open Rally Trial Not held % % % Total for Year % % % % Note: 2015 March data is the National Trial. The Open Rally Trial commenced in Points of interest: In 2017 there were 90 GSDs competing across RTB, all breed and RTG5 trials. There were 16 GSDs that trialed in 2016 that did not enter the ring again in In 2016 on average each GSD trialed 6 times per year. In 2017, there were five dogs that did 8 or more trials (maximum was 11 trials). While 20 dogs competed in 5 or more trials for the year, 55 dogs competed in 1 4 trials for 2017, and of these, 16 dogs only competed at the GSDCV trials (RTB or RTG5) where dual trophy/gsdca medallions were available. In 2017, the average dog trialed only 4 times per year. Across the 23 all breeds (open) events, the maximum number of GSDs being obedience/rally trialed at any non GSDCV event was the DV/OTEC November trial with 18 entries, then the Northern PM trial with 14 entries. At many open events, the number of Rally Obedience entries at trials exceeded or equaled the number of obedience entries at each event. In the Rally classes, these were (mostly) different dogs to those entered (or also) in the obedience classes and as Rally is not eligible for dual trophy purposes and is not necessarily converting handlers/dog teams over to enter obedience trials, but at least is getting the handlers to trial. Readers should note that a successful Rally team does not necessarily make a good obedience team as different skills are required in the ring. However a good obedience trial dog is always able to compete successfully in the Rally Obedience classes. March 25, 2018 Page 29

The 2016 GSDCV Restricted to Breed (RTB) trials were attracting 43 % of the possible GSD obedience entries for the March Champ Show (25 entered) and 28% for the May State Breed (16 entered) trial. In 2017 that drops to 19% and 17% respectively. Clearly less competitors are choosing to enter the GSDCV trials even though there are more GSDs trialing. In 2017, there were 29 non GSDCV open/rtg5 trials that GSDs could enter. 16 affiliates opted to run either double trials with both obedience and rally or combine an obedience trial in the morning with a rally trial in the afternoon in an effort to boost entries. Regardless of the format, the average number of entries in an all breeds/rtg5 trials is 40 entries, an affiliate trial is now considered large if it has 60+ entries. The GSD attendance at obedience trials is on average 12% of the total entry, and the Rally classes are matching or exceeding the obedience classes in popularity. The obedience handler/ dog teams always have issues of being: in season/whelping, being between levels and competing interests e.g. work & family or other disciplines such as herding, dancing with dogs and tracking. Finally injury/old age forces retirement of dogs from competition to become pet only. As these handlers may not be in a position to have another dog they are lost from the trial scene until they do so. Entry fees at GSDCV trials match all breed trial entry costs so as to counter the financial excuse. Surveying GSDCV member competitors as to why they are not entering any or all GSDCV events highlighted that those asked would prefer to see the value for their time/effort by having double events, eg: Open Rally Trial being a Double Trial or including an Obedience Trial, a Rally Trial included with the RTG5 Trial in November and perhaps shifting the Double Trial to be a daytime AM/PM Trial instead of an afternoon/night trial so those travelling long distance were not returning home late. Further changes to the format of these trials will require additional volunteers to commit to assisting on the day of the event, particularly as stewards and admin staff. Tracking Trials The GSDCV runs one of the longest continually held open to all breeds tracking trial per year on the Queen s Birthday Weekend. This is a 4 day commitment from the volunteers who organize this event as the actual competition runs for three days and a set up day is required as well for laying out of tracks. With tracking, once all available titles are completed, there is no opportunity to continue tracking. As dogs require at least 8 tracking trials to finish, so each year is likely to be different dogs competing. While the numbers remain stable, the costs to run this trial for a small % of dogs being GSD (and even less actual members of the GSDCV) are significant, the commitment in volunteers is significant and only a very small number of GSDCV members volunteer their time. The rest of the volunteers come from tracking club members and friends of the adjudicating judges. Without these additional volunteers, this trial could not function and the GSDCV thanks them for their commitment to the discipline. The GSDCV applauds the handlers who make it to this level of trialing for their dedication to undertake the challenge of these tests, as they are urban track tests around streets and parks and undertaken as day or night tracks and up to 4 hours old. The GSDCV has been the last event on the TSD calendar and consequently has found entries reducing as other clubs have started to run TSD trials earlier in the season. There are now events on the two preceding weekends of the GSDCV event. While this does not sound significant, entries for upgrades have to remain open until those events are completed, so knowing actually how many dogs will be competing at the different levels is not finalized until 4 days before the event. Further, if dogs complete their Grand Champion title in the preceding weekends before the GSDCV event they cannot compete and even if entered are eligible for a refund of entry fee because they are unable to participate. 32 Membership Officer Mrs Helena Walter The year of 2017 finished with the eleven Branches enrolling 1193 new members. This was an increase in recent year s New Member Total despite the criteria for enrolling Household units changing early in the year. BRANCH NUMBERS OF GSDCV MEMBERS ON 31 st DECEMBER 2017 Branch Name Members No. of Units (including Life Members) New Members in 2017 Ballarat Bendigo Eastern Geelong Gippsland Malvern Northern Skye Specialist Western Wodonga Others Total The GSDCV Constitution changes implemented in March 2017 restricted a Household membership to only two adults and any number of children under 18 years living within the family unit. It was with some relief that new members could no longer include extended family members, numerous adult children and unrelated housemates on their membership form unless they fitted the criteria of only two adults per Household unit. The Club was fortunate to have one of our members, Rob Filardo, willing to spend many hours using his programming skills to identify those existing member Households that included more than two adults. By using these results as well as checking hard copies of the membership lists of each Branch, approximately 150 individual s or letters were sent out to members. With program changes to the database, provision was made at the time of membership renewal for those extraneous adults to transfer to their own membership without losing their record of continuity. By the end of 2017, only four Households had elected to use this option. Most decided to relinquish the extra memberships because they had not been active members for many years. The reduced number of adults within a Household unit explains why, although the number of Membership units increased from 1323 in 2016 to 1384 in 2017, the actual number of members decreased by the end of Renewals for 2018 totalled 507 Member units by 31 st December this was one more than last year. Of those; 68.5% renewed online, 19.5% renewed by mail and 12% renewed through their respective Branches. A small increase in membership fees was implemented in October This was the first increase since 2011 and was necessary because of increased Dogs Victoria levies and the general cost of running the Club. Throughout 2017, Vince Ebejer continued to make himself available either by phone or Team Viewer to offer solutions to problems which arose in using the Membership Database. Thank you to the Branch Membership Officers, who spend every week welcoming new owners and trying to convince them that it will take more than a couple of weeks to train their puppy and the reasons why the eight year old child cannot be the handler. They assist with membership application form completion, ensure that the correct fees are paid, decipher hand writing and meet the deadlines imposed each month. March 25, 2018 Page 32

Shepherd News and Enews Editor Ms Jacinta Poole Shepherd News Editor Report The German Shepherd News is our club magazine. Our direct connection to all members for delivery of Club information and news, and we get to inform everyone about what great things our members and their dogs get up to. But in these days where facebook in particular is so prevalent as a communication media, we must continually ensure that we keep our magazine relevant. Our constitution requires that we use the Shepherd News to communicate information and meeting notices so don t miss an edition or rely on another source for official information. Teamed with our website, we can cover all options for all members. Despite the often few weeks delay in reporting news, the magazine provides a hard copy in your hands for the coffee table. We are one of the few states in Australia that still has a hard copy magazine, and will do so for the near future at least. So enjoy, and please take the time to read each edition as it arrives! There might be something important in it. Finding and creating content for each edition is always a challenge, to ensure content is interesting for all. Thank you to those who contributed articles or agreed to interviews when approached during the year. Your contribution made our magazine relevant and interesting, and more often than not highlighted what our everyday members are involved in with their dogs. I am always looking for stories about our everyday dogs, not just show or trial stars, so start writing, it would be most welcome and appreciated by our readers! The most consistent section of each edition is the Branch news. Most branches take the opportunity to showcase all their members, activities, highlights and to communicate essential information to the wider club. It s also a great example of the diversity within our club and between each branch, showing a great range of activities for all. A massive thank you to our branch publicity officers who each edition provide great reading on their branch activities, along with images. Branch publicity officers are our key contributors and your efforts are much appreciated by your fellow branch members. I am always most grateful to those who provide and share content in the form of articles and stories throughout the year. It s a great way to record our activities during the year and the highlights. Of course it would be great to have more general stories about our dogs, as we are about way more than just the show and obedience ring! Our regular contributors of information who cover news and club updates are ever reliable. Thank you to Vince Ebejer for his President s reports, Les Rudling for OTC news and Judy Eppinger for puppy listings from breeders and rehoming stories. It s great to report on some of the dogs we ve placed through our rehoming service and their new lives!. Also to Cristine Begbie and Dearne Jackson for provision of show and trial schedules. Thank you to Secretary Mel Siktars for help in her role as magazine proofreader. With a quick turnaround to print, it s a difficult but necessary task and completed in limited time. Thank you to those who have advertised in the magazine during the year, your financial contribution was most welcome, and we hope you benefitted from your promotion. Thank you also to anyone else who supported the magazine. I hope everyone has enjoyed the Shepherd News magazine and that it s provided information and interesting articles about the GSD and our club. For you as members, The Shepherd News is YOUR magazine. Any contributions, ideas for changes and improvements, suggestions or feedback are always welcome to sheped@gsdcv.org.au March 25, 2018 Page 33

Website & Electronic Media Co-Ordinator Ms Jacinta Poole Website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. For most members, they are the window to everyday life online including the GSDCV. Nearly everybody has a smart phone, pc or tablet these days, so you can keep up to date with us at the push of a button and the scroll of a feed. Our website and our online social media apps play a key role in our communication, promotions and publicity of our club and our breed. Facebook is our most rapid and direct line of contact, but it s backed up by our website where we can link to relevant documents, results, critiques, images and videos to enhance our messages. Online, we can reach, teach, educate and influence 24/7 across a broad demographic. The GSDCV Facebook page is our best pathway of rapid communication when we release news or results on the website. It s an easy and quick way to advise and provide a link to relevant information. We pride ourselves on rapidly posting show & trial results, and follow up with critiques. Those on facebook get immediate notification first and most time relevant with the news. It also keeps our club and breed at the forefront of people s minds. GSDCV Branches who use a facebook page get great access to and from their members with their activities. It s a fantastic way to stay in touch. A simple picture of a member with their dog or puppy is often shared many times over, providing simple recognition, but well worth the use of facebook. As always, there are those who don t respect others, with regards to fellow members and their dogs. That is the downside to social media. The GSDCV views this seriously and disrespect will not be tolerated. Online payments for a variety of club areas has been one of the core services of our website. We could not manage our club efficiently without this capability. Membership renewals are simple and streamlined online. Online entry capability for shows and trials has been in place for many years now. We also use our online payment system for seminars held through the year, making ticket sales simple and easy. All credit card payments are handled by a secure processing facility with the NAB bank. The club absorbs the transaction fees that are incurred. We believe this is a valuable service for our members. In 2017, ~$63,000 was transacted through our online facility. 63% being for membership, 21% for show entries, 8% for trial entries and 8% for seminar tickets. From a financial perspective, online payments are easily audited and secure and they made our membership and event secretaries lives much easier. Membership payments will remain online, so please continue to pay your memberships online where possible in the future. From 2018, our show and trial entries will move to utilise Showmanager for all online entries. This brings us inline with many other dog clubs in Victoria and our interstate affiliates. A small fee per entry and transaction fees will now be paid by the exhibitor for each event entered each time. Conversely the GSDCV will save the transaction fees previously incurred for all show and trial entries. Social media is what everyone does these days. We have our own Twitter and Instagram accounts for the GSDCV, and we need to use these tools more to broaden and complement our communication pathways. Of course, social media comes with a caveat use with care. The GSDCV will not tolerate misuse or abuse by members, about members or dogs. Follow our social media accounts: Our branches all have their own websites, and together with their branch facebook pages these make excellent options for communication and providing information to not only current members but those who might like to join the branch. Keeping the information current is the most critical aspect, and branches have direct access to manage their sites themselves. Thank you to all the branch webmasters and facebook managers for their efforts, these require constant maintenance to ensure responses are timely and informative. March 25, 2018 Page 34

Puppy Listings Officer Judy Eppinger is thanked for her posting and managing of the litters on the Puppies Available page, and the rehoming service with dogs available. Show and Trial results and critiques are also some of the most keenly awaited information we can provide. Our continued efforts to provide results quickly after events have been successful and appreciated. Thank you to Show Steno manager Barb Blythe for the provision of results and critiques so quickly and to Dearne Jackson for OTC trial results. Thank you to Amanda McAnuff for provision of the Points Score result updates. Late in 2017 we introduced Rex, our Virtual Assistant on the website. Rex is part of flexanswer Solutions Pty Ltd FAQs for our website, owned by our members Grant and Lin Milne, who provide the software to power the FAQ s area of the website. Thank You to Grant and Lin for their ongoing support with this useful software tool. flexanswer ifaq is an Intelligent FAQ service generously provided since flexanswer ifaq has answered nearly 60,000 questions and averages about 600 per month. The use of flexanswer ifaq allows us to expand the FAQs we provide based on the questions users actually type in and ask, so we hope we are helping teach GSD owners about our dogs and our club. Rex has increased the questions asked and answered, and is helping tailor our answers to be more specific and accurate as he continues to learn and accrue knowledge. FAQs are generally restricted to answers covering the GSD and the GSDCV. Early in 2018 our website will have an upgrade and facelift. Check it out. It will be fresh and modern, and fully responsive for all hand held devices. We will continue to develop, review and refresh our online presence to ensure we can provide the best and most accessible information to members and the wider public about the GSD and of course the GSDCV. All feedback and suggestions welcome at anytime to webmaster@gsdcv.org.au Training Records for 2017 Each training week, branches of the GSDCV record the number of dogs trained at their branch and the instructors available, across both obedience and show classes. The table below reflects the collated data for the 2017 year. The training data provides a valuable overview of each branch s activities, but more importantly it displays the size of the GSDCV, the breadth of training we provide and the number of GSD s and their owners who benefit directly from our training efforts, across both obedience and show classes. We can accurately report that the GSDCV had at least 17,418 dog units involved in training over the 2017 year and a total of 2,969 instructor hours were provided to train GSDCV members and their dogs. The corresponding total data for is below. This indicates that our training numbers have grown over the last 12 months, with obedience numbers increasing by 2.4% and instructor hours increasing by 3.8%. However show dog training numbers decreased by 19%. Our branches were open for training on average 45 weeks of the 2017 year. This accounts for closures due to summer break and closures for club events, public holidays, heat policy effects or other reasons determined by each branch. Branch Manager Secretary Treasurer Membership Officer Ground Manager Canteen Manager Breed Affairs Liaison Officer Publicity Officer Promotions Officer Equipment Officer Website Manager Marilyn Wrigley Matt Lee Marni Lee Doug Ellery Keryn Leggett Dean O Keefe Beth Leggett Edwina Neale Marilyn Wrigley Marilyn Wrigley Matt Lee Chris McPhan Ballarat Members taking part in the Anzac Day Parade 2016 My Report for the year 2017 is one I am proud to present to members of the GSDCV Inc. As we had problems with having a quorum for our AGM in 2017, I did not take on position of Branch Manager officially until June as I was away all of May looking after grandchildren while my daughter was overseas. Ballarat Branch has seen an increase of puppies coming to the branch especially since late November and continuing on to I wish to thank all instructors from other branches who have helped our branch out during 2017 with classes, your assistance was appreciated not only by our instructors but also our members who were in their classes. Since June we have had varied training, some off site visits where we trained then walked around the Farmers Market held at that area. Notably we trained at Lake Wendouree, did a puppy walk on a Saturday through the Bridge Mall where their Farmers Market was held. We also provided tracking for those who wished to participate and this was held before obedience training. We have also had agility equipment out during the summer good weather period for members to enjoy with their dogs and our puppy class goes for a social walk each week. Our branch also represented Animals in War in the Anzac March in Ballarat on Anzac Day and I would encourage branches to take part in this with their dogs, contact your local RSL Branch for details and make sure your dogs are able to cope with the very loud drums, bass drums and bagpipes as they may start up quite close to the dogs. We practiced marching with a local brass band which proved a success as well as playing loud music when training was held. The animals we represent when we march are dogs, pigeons, donkeys, camels and horses all of whom served and gave their lives in order to save our soldiers. We have a varied programme for 2018 which will include all of the above plus a trip to Ararat due to the fact we will have four members from the Ararat area, so we as a branch will travel and conduct our training session in Ararat at an area that is comparable to our training ground here. Our members attended our Trivia night which was a success thanks to Steve Kinsman and Dom Cafari. Another one has been organised for year We have welcomed back a number of members that were at the branch some years ago and they will be valued members of the branch. We have had a number of members with new puppies from late November through to after the New Year. Puppy class was kept going through to the New Year on a Wednesday night to see that members and their puppies kept up with their training and socialisation thankyou to Dean for taking that class each week and also taking puppy class through the year. Many thanks also to Ken for the classes he has taken through the year-well done. Our Aspirers have enjoyed their course and are a great help at the branch. They are looking forward to the practical work they are to do at metropolitan branches in We expect to put forward 3 or 4 Aspirers for 2018 course and are awaiting confirmation of the final number. We have had a number of visits by our Training Co-ordinator Les and his wife to the branch and members appreciated their visits. It also helped our Aspirers to have Les watch them taking classes at the branch so he knows how they are passing on the knowledge they have gained over the year. Thank you sincerely Les and Liz. Our Ballarat Branch looks forward to the future of the branch with the increased membership and puppy numbers that are arriving, and that is a most exciting time as we work towards getting our numbers back to what they were some years ago. I thank those who have assisted with putting equipment out on the ground especially the new members who have taken that task on board as well as assisting at catering days, attending branch functions and when we have a cleaning of the clubrooms, thanks to all. Thanks also to the show members who attend training to socialise their dogs on a regular basis getting them ready for the show ring, your attendance is vital and your information to members is essential with so many new people coming along with their GSDs. March 25, 2018 Page 37

We introduced Puppy Bags for presentation to new members with puppies who joined our branch. This was an idea by our then Secretary Liz Luxford. Liz did this to not only welcome those members to the branch but also to provide information on the breed and what one can achieve with their GSDs. Thanks Liz, a great idea which has been really appreciated by new members. We hope to add a few new items to our present equipment we have in the agility and obedience area. We may even try to get the Flyball equipment up and running so dogs and members can have some fun with that. We bought a couple of carts to take our equipment out on the ground. When our equipment cupboard is fixed and painted we will seek equipment to have at the branch, which is solid and strong and lasts well. We can also look at training toys, i.e. dumbells, kongs, and other items that will help our training programme. We will possibly have a look at Western Branch s equipment cupboard to see how they have set that up. Naturally we will not require the amount of equipment they do, but it will help us. Training Cards will be used this year, this will enable members to look at how instructors have marked their cards each week and what they can practice for the next week, which will help both members and instructors to learn the class exercises and reach the standard required to be passed up to a higher class. At this stage this will start next March We will also video classes at various times to see how the individuals are going, their weaknesses so they can work on those, give advice where necessary so they are progressing each week. Catering was held four times during 2017, however numbers of entries for the shows that the Ballarat Dog Club run in Feb, March, October and November were down in 2017, so we did not make as much in profit as we have in years past. We have looked at that and will introduce a new strategy to see if that improves sales. Thank you to the Ballarat members who worked cleaning up to get ready for the catering, helped on catering days and with the clean up after as this is a lot of work for all. Having new members who have come along to all four days has also made it easier for all. Thanks to the BBQ team, the canteen team, those who prepare the sandwiches, the home made cakes and biscuits as well as cleaning up when catering ceases around 2/3pm. A fabulous effort from all who took part as it has made it easier for those who have had to work all day when our membership was smaller. Our 40 th Anniversary held on December 9 th was most successful, with members from our branch from the past as well as our new ones attending, members of the Eastern Branch Demo Team, Les Rudling, Training Administrator, Vince Ebejer, Club President, Vince Tantaro, President of National Council our guest speaker and John Hodges who lit and blew out the candles on our Anniversary Cake. We sincerely thank all of those people above for contributing to the success of the day. Thanks to the GSDCV for the plaque presented by the President in recognition of attaining 40 years as a branch. I am sure all enjoyed the afternoon as I received many comments on the day. Thank you to all our members who helped on the day, very proud how you took on the role of hosts on behalf of our branch on the day. Projects for future attention: Bringing our honour board up to date which will mean we will have to purchase another board, replacing light globes with ones that are brighter and use less power, look at security lights and cost of fitting, refitting equipment store room so that we can store more gear easily accessible to take out and put away, finish equipment cupboard and I am sure we can find one or two other things that are not listed here. The committee believes we have made giant steps in getting the Ballarat Branch of the GSDCV Inc. back to where it was some time ago, numbers of dogs training on the ground and our concentration has been on achieving this aim. There have been some negatives, personnel and at Branch level which we as a committee have chosen to ignore to put all our efforts into moving forward, so getting members and their dogs on the ground each week as that will prove to be the major factor of once again becoming a force in the role of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria. As owners of German Shepherds who are also custodians of the breed we believe it is vitally important to educate and train members of this branch so they become responsible owners of our breed, not only at our Branch but when out and about in the public arena. 39 BENDIGO Branch Manager Tony Kekich Grounds Manager Tony Seddon Assistant Branch Manager N/A Breed Affairs Liaison Officer Edwina Neale Secretary Norma Meaney Promotions Officer Anthea Kekich Treasurer Debbie Kennedy Publicity Officer Anthea Kekich Chief Instructor Terry Kennedy Social Secretary Colleen McCarthy Membership Officer Anthea Kekich I m pleased to bring to you the Annual Report for 2017 relating to the Bendigo Branch of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Victoria. Bendigo Branch started the year with some steady attendances but to be quite honest, I would like to have seen healthier numbers each week. Since being at the Branch, it had become quite clear to me that the majority of handlers/members wish for an obedient dog and it seems that when they get to the point that they are happy with their progress, people tend to leave but gladly, most still remain members. That s totally fine with me because it means that we, as a Branch are doing everything right. Our instructors have clearly identified the needs and requirements of our local community when it comes to training, guiding and assisting people and their GSD s. Numbers during the year were generally low, struggling to break into double figures for the most part. However, we continued to see members turning up at different times throughout the year and memberships continued to roll in. Despite low numbers, our Instructors worked extremely well together and were able to provide a lot of one on one guidance to members. I continued to be pleasantly surprised by our Instructing Staff as they kept people s interest up, followed a positive mind set at all times and were always on hand to provide our membership with outstanding service. To our Chief Instructor, Terry Kennedy, thank you very much for all your efforts this year. Always going above and beyond for our Branch and our region. Our handlers loved all their classes where Terry was their instructor. Debbie Kennedy: Hey thanks heaps for your enthusiasm and commitment developing these handlers, mostly new owners of German Shepherd pups. Deb played such an important role particularly shaping first impressions of people upon arrival at the Branch. Ron Bailey: Wow, the knowledge and skill this man has about the GSD never ceases to amaze me. Our members always enjoy listening to Ron talk about the history of the GSD and enjoy his excitement and excellent training techniques. Oh and congratulations on your marriage to Peta. Norma Meaney: Congratulations on joining Bendigo Branch and welcome to Bendigo. Your expertise when it comes to instructing is a huge gain for our Branch and our members have enjoyed your support. Anthea Hamilton: Great work this year with our members. I consistently had people comment about Anthea s caring approach to instructing and tips on how to get the best out of their GSD. 40 The ever excitable Ron Bailey General Obedience Training I am ever so proud of our instructors and their efforts throughout this year. They really continue to work hard, be innovative and supportive in order to bring out the best in our members and their beautiful canine companions. So, well done to Terry, Debbie, Ron, Anthea and Norma. One of our Aspirers, Kyle Herrick ended up joining the Police Force this year so we only saw him a couple of times. So congratulations Kyle on your new career. A special thank you to Colleen McCarthy for organising our social events and fundraising during the year. Colleen s tireless efforts helped immensely and I am very proud of her commitment to the Branch. A big welcome also to Edwina Neale who has decided to join our committee as our Breed Affairs Liaison Officer. We look forward to your input at our Branch. Once again this year, we held a training session at Lake Weeroona in the centre of Bendigo which proved another great success for our Branch and the GSDCV as a whole. I say this because bringing our GSD s into the community has such a widespread and positive outcome for all associated with the German Shepherd community. As in previous years, the general public got to see how wonderful this breed performs and behaves. It was great to talk to people who would not have otherwise thought of owning a German Shepherd Dog but now see the option as a real possibility. During 2017, Bendigo Branch has prided itself in bringing the breed to the wider Bendigo Community. Our team of instructors continues to promote the GSDCV throughout our region. It is important we continue our work within the community to develop an understanding and appreciation of our beloved breed. For that I once again, thank our marvellous Bendigo Branch Instructors for their determination and overall commitment to the goals of the GSDCV. Finally, I d like to thank the members of Bendigo Branch who participated during the year. Your membership has been important to our Branch as much as your friendship. Wishing everyone a fantastic and fun filled Tony Kekich Branch Manager- Bendigo Branch. March 25, 2018 Page 40

EASTERN Branch Manager John Schulz Shepherd News Barbara Stewart Assistant Branch Manager Andrew McAnuff Merchandise Barbara Stewaart Secretary Amanda McAnuff Website Officer Kath McAnuff Treasurer Jenny Burley Breed Liaison Officer Melissa Siktars Chief Instructor Peter Wallbridge Membership Officer Trish Gough Grounds Manager Ethel Thompson Catering Officer Jenny Burley Education Rhonda Snijders Equipment Officer Kath McAnuff I am pleased to present my third report as Manager of Eastern Branch. I begin this report by expressing my sincere gratitude to all those who gave freely of their time to ensure that Eastern Branch continued to operate successfully during Our Instructors and Committee Our well organised instructor pool gave many hours of their time to train owners in the finer points of handling their dogs. In some cases this involved one on one instruction to help owners overcome challenging behaviour. Unfortunately we are seeing more of these challenges and this may lead us to look at the way that we progress dogs through class levels. This year we were able to offer classes from baby puppy through to trial preparation, Rally -Obedience, Show and attendance at our early morning tracking classes exceeded all expectations. Once again this year the commitment of our instructors and handlers saw many Titles achieved together with some pleasing results in the Specialty Show ring. It was rewarding to see newer members participate alongside some of our more experienced people and we hope to continue to build on this next year. Congratulations to all concerned for the time and effort you put in. Sincere thanks must also go to the 2017 Committee members for their support of the Branch and the wider Club, in a number of roles, throughout the year. We are very fortunate to have a full committee so that roles can be filled and decisions can be readily made and enacted. Once again without you the Club would grind to a halt. Our Members To our members who trained every week, hail, rain or shine, we and your dogs, thank you. It is very gratifying to see so many people training on a regular basis. We understand that many people have conflicting commitments on Sundays and we are pleased to see you, too, albeit less frequently. To those who were able to respond to our first survey we thank you. Your input will be valuable in planning for the future. Our Demo Team Our Demo team was busy again this year with performances at the Knox Pet Expo, our Branch Games days and at Ballarat s 40th Birthday celebrations This activity provides opportunities for the public and our members to see Shepherds in action close up. Puppy Kinder Puppy Kinder, another initiative of the Branch, was conducted again in 2017 with small groups of pups and their people learning the ropes in the clubhouse, on Monday nights. It is gratifying to see that classes are so popular as this indicates a need for this type of training. We are looking at the possibility of expanding this service to encompass older puppies in the future. Once again, our thanks go to Rosie Garbett and Mary Hawthorne, our Kinder teachers, for conducting these sessions so successfully. Our Education Program Our Education Program continued with two tracking presentations early in the year. This must have been an inspiration to many as our tracking participation increased markedly this year. We also introduced Q & A sessions for new puppy owners which we intend to build on during These sessions run toward the end of practical training sessions and give owners a chance to ask anything puppy related will also see sessions on nose work and hopefully herding as some of our members are testing their dogs interest in herding during the Christmas break. Fund-raising Fund raising, such an integral part of our operations, reduced this year with only two Sausage Sizzles at Bunnings along with our canteen operations, dog shop, weekly raffle Royal Canin sales and our Annual Shopping expedition. Monies raised continue to provide equipment for our members and to pay the ongoing cost of facilities hire and maintenance. A substantial donation was also made to Victorian Animal Aid Trust again this year. March 25, 2018 Page 41

Our volunteer helpers Finally, thank you to all of our volunteer helpers each week: in the canteen, setting up equipment and putting it away, helping at the sign-in desk and at sausage sizzles, fixing things, mowing the list goes on. Thank you also to the members who attended the Royal Show Breed booth with their dogs again this year. You and your dogs were, once again, a credit to the Club. At the same time, we increased our exposure through demonstrations at the Wallington Strawberry Fair, the RSPCA Million Paws Walk, the Wyndham Pet and Animal Expo, and the annual fundraiser, Bunnings Sausage Sizzle. An opportunity for a further meet and greet with the public as well as a bit of an adventure for dogs and handlers was provided by a walk along Geelong s popular Eastern Beach and Waterfront. Eighteen members and their dogs made their way past people and traffic and were a great hit amongst the startled and delighted spectators, with many keen to photograph as well as pat our dogs. This is an event we hope to repeat both in Geelong as well as on other routes as all thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. For our members, we introduced Christmas in July and encouraged the wearing of costumes, with Drysdale photographer, George Stawicki, photographing the occasion. These photos were available for purchase, while a number featuring our dogs were selected for inclusion in our inaugural annual calendar that were sold as a fundraiser, with the small profits going to the Branch. The occasion also featured a mixture of training and games, a sausage sizzle, a bonfire, and a raffle that included prizes generously donated by our members as well as Best Friends and Pet Circle. A sausage sizzle day as well as a family-oriented break-up day concluded the activities for the year. March 25, 2018 Page 42

With members embracing all these activities, the committee has been encouraged to continue and increase their numbers in 2018 so that members have multiple opportunities to participate and feel part of a special community of those of us who love our GSDs. Most importantly, of course, we continue to provide invaluable training to those who wish to: learn how to teach their dogs basic obedience commands, take that further into trialling; provide their dogs with an opportunity to socialise; be part of a friendly group of people all too willing to talk about our dogs. While we have had members training their dogs for various trials, 2017 saw the greatest numbers doing just that than our Branch has seen for several years. Congratulations to all those who entered trials, whether successful or not, as participation is the first and most important step. This year, ten members (one with two dogs) entered trials with a total of eight titles being awarded. We hope all will continue to trial and be joined by others interested in challenging themselves and their dogs. In order to prepare and instil the confidence required by those trialling as well as those who are wishing to foster wellmannered canine companions, the Branch is most indebted to the small number of instructors who dedicate themselves to helping and encouraging our members and their dogs to be the best they can be. A huge thank you to Kellie Spark, Jo Mee, Desma Dickeson and Veronica Filmer for your efforts and invaluable contribution. We hope that others may be inspired to join you to assist the growing number of people who are recognising the importance of training and socialising their GSDs Our instructors are, however, are part of a larger team that contributes to members achievements whether at home or in the trialling ring both off the ground as well as on the ground. Our committee members are vital to the success of our Branch, and I am thrilled that this year we have had a strong, united committee who have volunteered many hours on the grounds and at home to ensure that we are able to provide the necessary services to GSD owners in the wider region. This year, one of those members, our Treasurer and Equipment Officer, Michelle Cabel, was awarded the Janet Henley Memorial Award for Member of the Year due to her willingness to help wherever help was required. She has provided a helping hand to the setting up and packing of equipment, stepped in to assist our instructors when necessary, provided advice to members, and made practical and organisational contributions to many of our activities. Well done Michelle! Finally, I would like to thank all our members who have supported us throughout the year either by attending classes and activities, as well assisting with equipment and our fundraising endeavours. We enjoy seeing familiar faces coming back and new faces becoming familiar faces all contributing to a wonderful group of people who make the efforts of committee and instructors worthwhile. We hope to see you all again in 2018 as we travel together on our various journeys with our muchloved canine companions. In 2017 our instructors were led by Alan Purcell, I would like to thank Alan and all the Instructors for their outstanding efforts throughout the year. Alan s leadership and enthusiasm resulted in some format changes in our training which proved to be popular with the members. I would like to thank the instructors for all their time and efforts throughout the year. Training numbers continued to hover around an average of 25 dogs at training every week and at the end of year break up we had over 35 dogs at training. It was a quiet year as far as titles go with only 2 dogs achieving titles this year. However, the rest of the team was out there giving it a go in Tracking, Rally and Obedience. Hopefully their efforts will pay off as they continue into Our other non-trialling members who put in just a much time and effort with their training also deserve recognition for their dedication to the breed and ensuring their dogs are well behaving and good representatives of our wonderful breed in the community. These people don t receive ribbons at trials or medals at our club AGM but they are just March 25, 2018 Page 43

as important to the breed as every other member of this club. Unfortunately due to lack of interest, Show classes are not currently being held at Gippsland. By popular demand we held a fastest recall competition throughout the year and have started a perpetual shield for the event. This year was 50 meters starting through a tunnel. Well done to Jessica Ashmead and her new rehomed dog Jessie on winning the competition. Jessie was already going pretty fast be as soon as Jessica threw Jessie s favorite toy she got even faster. If it s confusing for you reading this having the handler and dog with the same name. Imagine what it s like for Jessica s husband at home. Following on from the success of the Moe Dog Day Out and the Traralgon Christmas parade last year, members decided to participate in both events again. With 8 dogs attending the Moe Dog Day Out and over 20 in the Christmas parade both events went off without a hitch. A big thanks to Anne Lee for coordinating both events. The Gippsland Getaway at Karingal Scout Camp was held again in April. The weather was a bit kinder to us this time and we all stayed an extra day. Although it was a social weekend away with our dogs we never miss an opportunity to do a bit of training, with the amount of space available there was a big focus on tracking training. We had planned to return again in September but due to heavy rain it was cancelled. Our thanks to Rick Bradley for allowing us to use the facility free of charge again. Around the club rooms we have made some renovations throughout the year. Following the donation of an oven our Maintenance Manger set to work with the help of Alan and Dave, expanding the kitchen. The new oven and more room to move has made our Canteen Manager very happy. In return, Nicole provided a range of different lunches for us and even a few Bacon and Egg Breakfasts before training. We are now in the planning stages for more renovations with extension of the club rooms to include and office and storage space. As always, the Gippsland committee have done an outstanding job. We had some changes in key positions with Rick Bradley taking over as Treasurer from Carol Batchelor and Dave Hynd being elected the new Breed Affairs Liaison from Julie Jordan. Due to an increased workload we also created and Assistant Membership officer to assist Anna with new arrivals. I would like to thank Katrina Binotto for stepping into the role without hesitation and wish her all the best as our Membership Officer in 2018 and beyond. Finally, congratulations to Nicole Allman for receiving the Members choice award this year. Officially Nicole is our Canteen Manager however she is usually the first one to put her hand up and take on extra jobs as they come up. 45 We ve again had a great year at Malvern. We are all about helping our members train their dogs, to the best of their ability. And some of the improvements for handlers and dogs have been most impressive and well earnt. We ve trained an average of just under 60 dogs at training each Sunday. Sometimes more and sometimes less, as we know everyone has busy lives! But classes have been productive, we ve helped some dogs and handlers who really needed assistance, and guided many others to really enjoy a morning out with their dog. Our instructors have often worked as teams in classes to ensure that all members received the required attention, with the flexibility for individual tuition if needed. We have found this works really well with our close team of instructors and this also brings great variation to the activities in class each week, something we know our members want. We ve also increased our use of agility and action stations, which members have really taken to as a challenge and as a change from routine. Along with socialisation, using equipment really tests handlers and dogs control of the basic skills, so it s really to everyone s advantage that we utilise this approach in weekly training. We hope our aim to ensure all have a friendly well behaved dog, both at home with the family and out in public was achieved. We saw many of our handlers and dogs make great improvements over the year. With our puppy and younger dog classes continuing over the December - January break, we were open for 45 weekends of the year with closures only for club and event related reasons. That s a big commitment for our committee members and instructors, and one that we know all our members appreciate. We continually try to ensure that our branch is about more than training dogs, it s a social environment for member interaction for those with a common interest, to compare notes and receive support if needed. Our regular bacon & egg and/or sausage sizzles to start the mornings continued through the year that everyone (and their dogs) have enjoyed. We also held an education seminar with renowned vet Dr Ray Ferguson from Monash Vet Clinic, who spoke about ageing dogs and what could be done with new ideas, along with the usual important vet discussions on bloat etc. We know making this information accessible and easily available in person with an expert, is important to how we all manage our dogs The competitive Dog Competition world has included many Malvern members in 2017, in both performance and conformation activities. This is the main focus of activity outside of Sunday training for those members attending trials and shows. Success this year in Track and Search for Lin Milne & Echo, in Tracking for Ken Mackay & Sarge, Anca Tilea & Phryne, and in Rally for Dearne Jackson & Polly. Dearne and Leica were active in the show ring, as were Gayle Johnston & April, who were busy in the show ring and successful at Breed Survey, along with Judy Eppinger and Marlie and Daen and Peter Howard with Venice. Great support for our Breed Improvement Schemes.Yay. Peter and Dawn Howard have had multiple successes in tracking, obedience and showing, as has Urs & Therese Rhyn whose two girls Ricki and Xena are racking up rally and obedience titles along with show points to gain a dual dual champion title. Wow!. Our trial training on Wednesday night is led by the assistance of judges Jim Begg and David Hutson, for which we are most thankful for their efforts. We hope to see more members become active in the trial ring in Malvern was out and about promoting our dogs when we attended our local Stonnington Council Pets in the Park Expo in March. Malvern represented the GSDCV to showcase our dogs and breed with activities and an information stand and tunnels for the public. The team also provided assistance at the Dogs Victoria Big Day Out For Dogs, again providing tunnel activities for the general public, which was appreciated and recognised by Dogs Victoria. We thank all our members, dogs and helpers who gave freely of their time to promote our club and breed. Thank you to Malvern CI Dearne Jackson for her coordination and management of the Malvern team that gets out and about. Our dedicated committee for 2017 must be thanked, as they continue to work tirelessly in making sure Malvern is well managed. This year has been particularly complex and demanding. Without this group of members providing the administration and organisation of our branch, we could not function. Together with our instructors, it s a great team. Our committee included Jacinta Poole, Sam Siebel, Judy Eppinger, Wayne Speck, Dearne Jackson, Gayle Johnston, Jenny Lord, Ken Mackay, Grant Milne, Lin Milne, Jim Begg, Maggie Davis and Derek Marchetti. All have made key contributions, often putting branch members before their own dogs and training. We also have many other members who routinely assist with setting up or packing up on Sundays, and providing other assistance, all of which helps. Malvern s instructors are a powerhouse of information and training knowledge that is considered so valuable by our members. Their contribution and commitment each week as they volunteer their time for the benefit of all our members is immeasurable. We thank them for their dedication, patience and persistence in making sure that all members get the most out of their dogs through training. Routinely they spend extra time and effort after class providing advice for those with difficult dogs or other problems. This is most appreciated. As a group, our instructors are the face of our branch and the link to our members which provides our branch with success for those improving with their dogs. They also teach and mentor within their own instructor group to ensure all continue to learn and develop as instructors. This year we were pleased to welcome the very experienced Mike Fajdiga as a fully accredited instructor after he passed his training assessment, and also Donna Bradley who joined the aspirer program. Donna s experience in teaching has been evident as she begins her instructing career and we wish her well in the last year of the training course. Our branch and club are always indebted to our instructors, along with our committee they are the core of our success as a branch. So a big thankyou from all at Malvern to Dearne Jackson for her leadership as Chief Instructor, Judy Eppinger as March 25, 2018 Page 45

assistant, Gayle Johnston, Jim Begg, Keith Heale, Pam Jackson, Ken Mackay, Julia Tahourdin, Marg Starow, Valerie Tan, Jacinta Poole, Grant Milne, Sam Siebel and Mike Fajdiga, along with Donna Bradley as our aspiring instructor. Stonnington Council have always been solid supporters of the Malvern branch. Our pavilion and ground facilities are first class. However, late in 2017 the Council decided that our branch will be relocated in early 2018, to satisfy a request by the local Junior Football club. Our relocated ground will be Waverley Oval in East Malvern, close to where we are currently located. Obviously we are disappointed by this outcome. There is much we could write about this decision, however it s best left unsaid. Our 40 years of tenancy, our branch activities and what we offer to the broader local community and their pets as a training and recreation service speaks for itself. We also thank our club sponsors Royal Canin for their support. Royal Canin product is very popular amongst our branch members for their dogs. Thank you to everyone who has been involved with Malvern this past year and to the GSDCV Management Committee for their support during the year. Several Malvern committee members also have very active roles with the broader GSDCV club. At times this significantly extends their individual commitments beyond what they contribute at Malvern and for that we are appreciative of their extra efforts for the broader club members and the GSD breed will be another big and also challenging year for us at Malvern, with a change of venue afoot. But we ll be all systems go in classes, don t worry about that. We know the measure of our success will be the happy dogs we see early each Sunday morning along with their handlers, working to achieve the next highlight. THANK YOU to everyone at Malvern who makes our branch a success the achievements we see and the smiles on your faces are the reason we just keep at it. So, don t give up training! Firstly to the instructors, who selflessly give up their time each week to impart their knowledge and expertise, as we know there would be no GSDCV without these people right across the breadth of the club. With Northern we have a small group, with Andrew Quinn and Steve Gunst being the elder statesmen with something like 40 odd years experience between them, sensationally supported by Melissa Bauer and Terry Skinner who have now established themselves in their respective classes and of course Jim Rose in his first full year blossoming week by week despite health issues during the year. Liza Zankoski has given us more than enough indication she will be a superb addition to our ranks as she becomes qualified early Melissa has taken a small but enthusiastic tracking group over winter and we hope to see some results in Thanks also to Wendy Seng Hpa for maintaining her rally course for those interested each week and also the hard core rallyers who have taken all before them over the last couple of years. Unfortunately after the crowds have made their way home, Geoff Dennis efforts in steering our showies both old and new, goes largely unnoticed. He has stood tall despite being physically under the pump for some time. Well done Geoff. Special thanks to Ethel Thompson from Eastern for her devotion to our Puppy B class. Without her assistance, Melissa would have had plenty on her plate each week and Peter Wallbridge also from Eastern in helping out when we were in trouble with instructors. So while the instructors are doing their thing out on the ground, the committee is running the branch in every other respect, always willing to change jobs at a moment s notice to ensure smooth running each week. My thanks to our committee this year and Mary Lanfranchi General Committee Member. March 25, 2018 Page 46

We got off to a good start when training resumed in February. Our training numbers were steady through the year so thanks must go to the instructor group that put in week after week. On the financial side of things the raffles, canteen, special efforts and seminars continue to bring in extra income which enabled us to purchase yet more new equipment for the branch. Royal Canin sales were good this year. On June 24 th we held a trivia night and October 14 th we held a seminar with Glenn Cooke as the guest speaker. Sunday the 19 th of November we had our combined break up and 30 th celebration which was enjoyed by everyone that attended. This year Santa arrived in a trailer with hay bales in the back. As usual a jumping castle was there for everyone to enjoy. A big thanks must go to all the Committee, Instructors and members that work hard to make these events possible. In closing, I would like to thank our members for their continuing support of the branch and our committee for their tireless efforts throughout the year. 48 SPECIALIST SHOW BRANCH Branch Manager Mr John Carter Chief Instructor Mrs Shirley Taylor Assistant Branch Mrs Nicky McDermott Grounds Manager Mr David Berry Manager Secretary Mrs Barbara Blythe Breed Affairs Liaison Officer Mrs. Chris Auwema Treasurer Mrs Fiona Henderson Catering Officer Mrs Julie Wade Publicity officer Miss Melissa Hammond Promotions Officer Mrs Margaret Raftopoulos I am pleased to present my annual report for part of the year I stood down for personal reasons after 8 months. I would like to thank the members for their support of me as Branch Manager during this time. I was saddened to leave the role I loved as it was a privilege and to work alongside the great people who have assisted me in my time as branch manager. Our branch is fortunate to have so many talented and experienced people who give their time unselfishly to the branch but more importantly to the breed. So a huge thanks to my committee and their support staff. Nicky McDermott as Assistant Branch Manager and for the last few months had to step up as Branch Manager after my resignation. Barbara Blythe as Secretary ensuring our members are all well informed. A lot has fallen on Barb s shoulders this year and I cannot thank her enough for the tireless work she does behind the scenes for the branch when she continues to give her time to the Victorian Club, National Council, Breed Affairs and a stenographer at our shows. Fiona Henderson as treasurer who not only looks after our branch financial position but also has continued in the treasurer role of the Victorian Club. Shirley Taylor as our chief Instructor moved to sunny Bendigo at the start of the year and this did cause a few blips and challenges at times but as a branch we pulled together to make things work. To all our instructors Alastair, Amanda, Barbara, David, Fran, Ian, Jenny, Mark, Mel, Nicky and Shirley who have also assisted throughout the year. It is their wealth of knowledge and experience that I believe makes SSB training second to none. The insight and seeking new ideas and ways will ensure our training remains interesting and best practice for handlers and dogs alike. It is no coincidence that our members continue to have success in the ring and to those that breed continue to produce high quality animals. Melissa Hammond has continued to inform the GSD fraternity and promote the success of our Branch via the Shepherd News. Judi Wade who has managed the canteen and BBQ this year. Providing a greater variety of food for all who attended our Branch. Ably assisted at various events by Margi, Chris and Brank. I thank all those who have helped with the canteen throughout the year, Chris, Fiona, Nicky, Ann, Barbara, Shirley, Jeannette, Judy and Andrea. Margaret Raftopoulos who continues to obtain gifts and donations from different sources for our raffles adding to our bank balance. Shaun Schembri for sourcing gift vouchers and gifts from David Jones to be raffled at our shows. My greatest thanks goes to my partner Jeannette who has assisted me through what has been a difficult year personally I cannot thank her enough for being by my side. As a small branch I am extremely proud how we all come together to be involved in setting up and assisting with shows throughout the year so our breed can continue to be promoted. This year has seen our constitution modernised, The Government making changes to how we breed and keep our animals and the introduction of the Harmonisation Program which will be a big challenge for all and I wish all office bearers all the best with this process. This does however highlight that we are firstly a breed club and the need to be vigilant so our breed will not suffer into the future. This unfortunately is lost on so many of our members who enjoy the breed that so few fight to protect. As Jeannette and I move onto our next chapter of life s journey I wish everyone a prosperous and happy upcoming year and look forward to catching up with many of you at the various shows throughout the year. John Carter Retired Branch Manager Specialist Show Branch. I would like to thank John for all his efforts over the past couple of years and wish him and Jeannette every success wherever their adventure takes them. I would also like to thank very much all those that John has mentioned that give so much of their time to assist us at SSB. We are only a small branch but certainly have big voices and most definitely have the breed at heart. Our passion is very evident and it s important that we continue as we represent the breed and breed affairs strongly. March 25, 2018 Page 48

Some of our members have recently made a sea change and moved away so we don t see them as much, however they are still very much part of SSB and very much appreciate how far they travel to attend training and our branch. On a very sad note we lost one of our dearest friends, Tom Luxton. Not only was Tom a wonderful mentor to so many, he was always there to help anyone with a problem. I was very proud of our members who worked very hard to clean and prepare our club room for Tom s memorial. Seeing the dogs lined up for the guard of honour was very special. It is my pleasure to write this report on behalf of the Western Branch, it has been another very busy and successful year, our numbers have continued to grow. Western members have done very well in the show ring, tracking trials, and obedience trials. All that hard work is paying off for these members who give it a go, which is awesome to see. Western finally got their lights installed on the roof of the clubrooms, and security lighting. It was a very long process to get tradies out and give us quotes, as no one wants to do work on council buildings with all rules and regulations council put on them, but they are up and work awesome. The cost was almost $8000:00 but we had a grant for $1500:00, and we paid the rest. Western also turned 40 years old last year we had a big bash and held it the same day as our presentation night 25 th November We had a lot of past members and committee turn up which was great to see, and the catering was to die for Cathy did an awesome job everyone raved about the food which just kept on coming. We also did the Good Friday Appeal again in 2017 and raised $27,619.45, with help from other branches again so our total over the 34 years we have been collecting is $603, What an awesome effort from all involved. March 25, 2018 Page 49

During the year Western held a talk by Michelle Dench from Victoria Police we had some 85 people in attendance it was a great night by all the feedback we received from the members and good to see members from other branches. Western has had some very big expenses during the year like lights and our 40 th anniversary and presentation night. We had about 130 people turn up for this event which we were very happy with. We have done some great fundraising during the year led by our Social Secretary, Dom Cafari, to raise just under $12000:00 in raffles, shopping spree, Pie drive, Trivia night, and Bunnings sausage sizzle, an absolute awesome effort. Western is still in a strong financial position, with same great hard work done by all. Western has another Bunnings sausage sizzle in January 2018, and some other fundraising ideas for the 2018 year. Western also held another Breed Survey and CWA in October with 11 dogs going through which is an awesome effort. Western also held a Structural assessment with 9 dogs going through and 1 was withdrawn so an awesome effort for those people putting their dogs through, it is great to see so many people getting involved in events held by the branch. Western still do visits to the Whittington Nursing Home with our dogs the staff and residents really get a kick out of it and a few times during the year the nursing home comes out to the branch to watch us do training, I would like to thank the members that give up even more time to give these people some happiness well they pat and cuddle our dogs. That is about all for the 2017 report we look forward to a bigger and better Steve Kinsman Branch Manager Western Branch WODONGA Branch Manager Secretary Treasurer Chief Instructor Breed Liaison Officer Assistant Breed Liaison Officer Grounds Manager Membership Officer * Canteen Manager Social Secretary Publicity/Website Officer Mr. Gordon Cole Mrs. Marlene Cole Mrs. Marie Brew Mr. Gordon Cole Mrs. Martine Burgess Mr. Jeff Burgess Mr. Gary Brew Mr. Mark Hopgood Mrs Marlene Cole Mrs. Tracey Hill Mrs. Carol Mindin Wodonga Branch continued puppy training during the Christmas break - January 2017 with the Branch commencing usual training on the 5 th February. The Branch conducts an excellent puppy course but finds it difficult to maintain a number of the younger generation to continue training their puppy or dog as it requires a considerable amount of their spare time and that competes with other outside interests. It is hard to impress on them that to continue through the classes ensures their four legged companion will become a better socialised, responsible, reliable, obedient member of the family and more importantly a credit to the breed when out in public rather than their four legged friend spending most of its time in the back yard. Over the past twelve months we have had an increase in the number of out of control backyard bred dogs joining the Branch which is taking considerable instructional time to sort out their many and varied problems, but we are happy to do this for the sake of the breed, an advantage of this is our instructors are gaining further experience in handling these dogs. Even with the above mentioned the Branch had another successful year, our training numbers were slightly down from the previous year, what did not help was the extremes in the weather conditions with many wet, windy and cold Sundays and with the end of the year approaching we experienced some very hot dry weather and it does not help when the Branch has no Club House and can only train outside. March 25, 2018 Page 50

My small team of two Obedience and Three Show Instructors have again worked tirelessly throughout the year to ensure classes are varied and challenging and that all dogs and handlers improve their skills so that they can progress through to a higher grade. The Branch is compelled to split the Branch training with Puppy, Classes 1 & 2 starting at 9am and Classes 3, 4 & 5 commencing at 10am. The only drawback with this situation is an organisational one getting people together for meetings etc. This puts a great deal of pressure on our limited number of Obedience Instructors as at times Instructors would like to attend Trials or are sick or holidaying and we may only have one Instructor to take training, not an ideal situation but we get through. I would like to sincerely thank Billie Louwrier, Martine Burgess, Jeff Burgess and Tracey Hill for their commitment, dedication, and wealth of knowledge they have gained over the years to pass onto Branch members. I must pass my thanks onto Greg Green and his wife for attending the Branch on quite a number of occasions throughout the year to help with Show Instruction and pass on their wealth of knowledge and experience to our Show members. To my Branch Committee over the past year thank you for your tireless work behind the scenes, which at times can be taken for granted, a special thank you to Marie Brew our Treasurer for her hard work and keeping me in line with the finances of the Branch. Some of our members during the year excelled in the Obedience Ring with passes in CCD, CD, Open, and gaining passes and Titles in Rally Obedience in Novice, Advanced & Masters - well done Billie and Martine. In the Show ring Yvonne Hornsey gained many results with Zorro, Amber and Zeta. Vanessa Bland with King and Shadow and Junior Handler Zach Bland placed 2 nd in Junior Handlers at the GSDL Easter Champ Show. Mark Hopgood and Bec Wanders with Odin achieved their Australian Championship. Michelle Rovetto with Zeus placed 1 st Stock Coat Puppy Dog, Reserve Challenge and Best Puppy of breed at the Royal Melbourne Show on 27 September. Tracey Hill with 2 new pups Kimba and Kitty attended their first show with both being graded Very Promising. Rita Wakley with Jed passed their first Tracking Trial at Broadford on 8 th July. Congratulations to all. The Branch held our Structural Assessment on Sunday 18 th June conducted by Greg Green and assisted by Marie Baldwin with 8 dogs taking part and a great day was had by all. The Branch held a number of Sausage Sizzles during the year, two at Bunning s and one at Total Tools, all three were quite successful and these are the only fund raising activities conducted by the Branch during the year. The Chief Instructor attended the Glen Cooke aggressive dog Seminar at KCC Park in October. Branch Manager and Chief Instructor attended the OTC AGM 24 th February at which our Chairperson, Marilyn Wrigley retired after many years of service with the Club during which time she held a number of management positions such as President, Secretary, Branch Manager and OTC Chairperson and Life Member. Marilyn will be sadly missed by the Club, however with the breed well and truly in her blood Marilyn has taken up the role as Branch Manager of Ballarat and we wish her the best in her new role. On Saturday 2 nd December the Branch held its annual end of year Christmas function at the SS&A Club Bistro, many members attended and a great social evening was had by all. Training concluded for the year on the 17 th December 2017, with a Branch Fun Day and Break-Up function with competitions and lots of prizes for all. After the games a BBQ lunch and goodies followed which was enjoyed by everyone present. The day was very successful as it is the only time that all members can get together (due to the number of Instructors the Branch has with classes having to be split with some starting at 9am and others at 10am). Puppy training will continue over the Christmas period with a couple of puppies attending Puppy Class. Puppies need the training at this early age as this minimises the bad behaviours which can develop with a break of two months. It looks as if there may be a slight change in the present Committee, but unfortunately no increase in our Instructor pool for 2018, so I would like to take this opportunity to thank my dedicated team of Instructors and Committee Members for 2017 and look forward to the challenges of In closing I would like to wish the Executive, Management Committee and all Branches the best in their endeavours for Gordon Cole Branch Manager Wodonga Branch March 25, 2018 Page 51

Neil Cousins Memorial Trophy None for 2017 Pam Lewis Memorial Trophy None for 2017 Gwen Ibbott Shield In abeyance Margot Haines Puppy of the Year: Margot Haines was a long-time member and Life Member of the GSDCV. She assisted in many positions over the years, including Club Secretary, Minute Secretary, Stenographer, Shepherd News Editor, Assistant Show Secretary, and for 25 years as our Puppy Listings Officer. She was particularly fond of puppies, and when Margot passed away in 2003, her family requested donations to a trophy fund in lieu of flowers at her funeral. These funds were donated to the Club and held in trust to award the "Margot Haines Puppy of the Year" trophy to the best performing GSDCV member s dogs in Puppy show classes each year. The Winners of the Margot Haines Trophy for 2017 year are: Male (Stock Coat): Freinhauf Hasta Lavista Baby (Vicky McGinty) Female (Stock Coat): Freinhauf Firefly Zoe (John Carter & Robyn Knuckey) Female (Stock Coat): Sannjesa Queen of Diamonds (Steve and Sue Mase) Male (Long Stock Coat): Jayshell Pirate (Lorelle & David Organ) Female (Long Stock Coat): Vonpeta Just Slip N Trip (Michelle Mercieca) Eric Orschler Annual Breeders Trophy: Erich Orschler is a respected (now retired) SV Judge who visited Victoria many times and became a friend and mentor to our Club, often giving talks on breeding and training of GSDs for our members. Erich instigated on one of his visits in 1984 a Perpetual Trophy for achievement by kennels in the fields of Show results, Obedience results, Titles, and Breed improvement schemes (hip, elbows and survey results). This is known as the Erich Orschler Annual Breeders Trophy" and is awarded to the most successful Victorian kennel on their combined point-scores each year. Winner of the Erich Orschler Trophy for 2017 is: Jayshell Kennels Nicky & Pat McDermott Schneider Trophy: The Schneider Trophy was donated to the GSDCV by Committee members Mrs E Schneider and Mrs B Ryan (then Club Secretary) in 1949 and has been awarded ever since to the most successful show dog owned by a Victorian Club member. The original trophy is still in use today and is a large, heavily plated silver cup that on today's value would be worth thousands of dollars. Winner of Schneider Trophy for 2017 is: Ch. Xaro von der Plassenburg a ED (Imp Deu) Andrew & Rachel Jones March 25, 2018 Page 60

The Walter Reimann Annual Dual Performance Trophy The Walter Reimann Dual Performance Trophy has been presented for many years at our Championship shows to the best performed dog in conformation and obedience. The trophy (featuring a distinctive pewter goblet) was made by Dick Atyeo, a long serving obedience instructor at Malvern Branch. Since Dick s passing, the last remaining Walter trophy has been made into an Annual Perpetual award, and is presented to the best overall dog that has won two or more Dual Trophies during the year. Winner of the Walter Reimann Annual Dual Performance Trophy for 2017 is: *Sensen Mann Yokon a ED (Imp Deu) CCD Henderson/Knuckey/Bobbin. Specialist Dog and Bitch of the Year The Specialist Dog and Bitch of the Year are awarded the Special Show Perpetual Trophy, a tall cup that was donated by Von Roland and Von Eichen kennels in 1978 at a time when showing in the Specialty ring became the preferred way to exhibit German Shepherd Dogs, rather than the former kennel club or all-breed style shows. It is awarded to the most successful show dog & bitch on an aggregate point-score from results at GSD specialty shows held Australia wide, including the National show.
