In summer there s more work, more time pressure and more urgency to get things done. We know that in such environments there s more chances of incidents and injuries occurring because People take shortcuts to get the job finished Pressure from others to hurry up Someone uses gear they re not trained on Gear doesn t get fixed or maintained when it should People knew something was unsafe but never said anything I ve been travelling around the regions talking to Higgins people to reinforce the importance of taking time to stop, think and act safely. No matter what s going on, no matter what you ve been told to do, if something is unsafe don t proceed. We must maintain our safety standards no compromises. Work within your teams to plan the safety of your site during these busy times and take the time during your day to be alert to changes in your workplace that could impact on you or your team s safety. If you see someone doing something unsafe, have a quiet word to them. If you can t fix something report it. We now have a small pocket sized Tell your story pad so you can record things that need fixing. Make sure you use it if the need arises. 2 building skills and knowledge A number of internally run Higgins training programs have been run over the past few months bringing people together from across the branches. The programs support people s personal and career development as well as allowing people with similar roles to get together to share ideas and job experience. PROJECT MANAGERS FORUMS Two groups of 30 Project Managers received a two day training program in Wellington which focused on safety, finance, business development and leadership. Both groups received a day of Site Safety Silver Card training and one group toured the Mill Creek Wind project where Higgins is currently involved as lead contractor. SUPERVISORS TRAINING A training program was held for Higgins Supervisors at Manfeild in Feilding in July. The Group received training on a range of topics including coaching, leadership and Site Safety Silver Card. Group Trainer Bill Evans says the program spent a lot of the time discussing the importance of their role in coaching and mentoring their teams. He says as experienced leaders in our business, they play a critical role in developing young staff and supporting them to grow within the business. It talks about some of the rules and risks that are a part of working at Higgins and is designed to remind us how dangerous our work can be and that we always need to act with care. YOUNG FELLAS CAMPS Developing on the success of the Young Fellas camp invigorated in recent years by Higgins Bay of Plenty, two additional Young Fellas camps have been run this year for young staff around other regions. The Young Fellas camps bring together staff aged less than 25 years with the aim of giving them opportunities to challenge themselves and to provide personal development. As well as many outdoor challenges, the teams also heard speakers discuss topics such as career opportunities, health and wellness, managing money and working in a team. Matt Paget - Operations Supervisor Higgins Bay of Plenty, was involved in running all abseiling AND RAFTING ARE TWO of the activities at the young fellas camps. three Young Fellas camps. He reflects that Higgins has a strong group of enthusiastic and capable young people in the business. We really want to encourage them to think about where they want to take their careers and think about what they need to do to get there. You don t have to be academic to succeed. 3 GOOD PROGRESS AT MILL CREEK Despite difficult weather conditions the Mill Creek project team are making strong progress. Now into the core foundation phase of the project, the team have to date excavated eight of the 26 wind turbine foundation bases and also installed the mobile concrete plant. Regional Manager Concrete, Scott Ferguson has been heavily involved in the installation of the concrete plant along with Jason Woods. Jason is responsible for production at the mobile concrete plant and has proven expertise in producing concrete from this plant, having worked on all Higgins led wind farm projects to date. Jason says the mobile concrete plant is capable of producing 80 cubic metres of concrete per hour. Each turbine foundation requires 350 cubic metres of concrete. CONcrete qualifications Terry Riddiford and Grant Vining achieved the BCITO Certificate in concrete production (Readymix). Terry started in the concrete industry with Oldfield s Ready Mix eight years ago as a driver and has worked his way through to running the Masterton Concrete division. Grant has been part of the concrete industry for the past 25 years. This qualification recognises the experience he has gained over the years. Higgins purchased the new Hemos machine from Europe. It s is the only one of its type in New Zealand and will be used across the business. This specialist Italian equipment makes the process of digging post holes, driving posts and installing rails a relatively simple and fast process. Higgins Nelson won the Supreme Award at the annual NZ Contractors Nelson awards for the Port Marlborough Waikawa Marine Centre - a large boat maintenance facility. The project involved the coordination of a large number of subcontractors and was completed in the 14 week timeframe on time, within budget and to a high standard during difficult weather conditions. The team also celebrated Zac Holloway s win as the Humes Trainee of the Year. It was a big night for Zac with his son delivered on the same evening. Grant Vining Higgins Concrete Plant Batcher/ DispATCHER PALMERSTON NORTH. Higgins TAUPO Higgins Taupo recently completed the Mitre 10 Mega car park involving 10527m 2 of asphalt. Project Manager Fletcher Cranfield acknowledges the effort of the Taupo team involved over the past 13 weeks. He says it wasn t all smooth sailing, at one stage a paver broke down. Kiwi ingenuity got the paver moving again being towed by a loader to ensure the job carried on without delay. A collaborative team effort ensured the project was delivered ahead of time. In July Higgins Taupo won the road maintenance contract for the Taupo District Council, an area which covers 705kms of sealed roads, and 74kms of unsealed roads. Taupo are now responsible for both this maintenance contract and the NZTA East Highway maintenance contract. TAUPO CREW WORKING AT MITRE 10 MEGA. Road marking trucks: Two new line marking trucks join the fleet. Each new vehicle comes fitted with a computer to provide relevant daily job information ie job location, time, job details and specific notes. The new computers also allow the team to measure accurately and quickly each job from start to finish aspects like paint usage, square metres of paint laid. 4 WELCOME Simon Pollard Branch Manager BOP Higgins welcomes Simon Pollard as the new Branch Manager of Higgins Bay of Plenty. Simon takes over branch responsibilities from Alex Reid who can now concentrate his energies on the development of the Central region in his role as Regional Manager. Prior to this role Simon was with Downer in Auckland as the Auckland Central Transport Contracts Manager responsible for the Auckland Transport Corridor Road Maintenance and Renewals Contracts and Auckland Councils Storm water maintenance. Simon s has a wealth of experience in pavement construction and maintenance placing him in a strong position to lead the Bay of Plenty team forward. He is well versed in the management and financial planning of maintenance programmes, an area which will be invaluable to the Bay of Plenty team. Having spent the majority of his career based in Auckland, Simon is keen to experience the best of what the Bay of Plenty has to offer. Simon has three children who are all excited about the move. Prior to Transpower, Scott s career included various IT roles including Senior Engineer, Architect at The National Bank of NZ in Wellington. Scott started his working life in the RNZAF and spent eight years as an Avionics Technician based at Ohakea. Scott commutes to from his home in Masterton where he lives with his wife Alison and two children. Aggregates industry safety award Baldwins Aggregates received the Winstone Aggregates Safety Award from the Institute of Quarrying NZ. Baldwins Aggregates has been accident and incident free for more than six years, an achievement which Manager Kerry Reilly says the team are extremely proud of. Baldwins Aggregates has been a part of the Higgins Group since November 2011 and is located in Waikato approximately 75km south of Auckland. Blast from the Past Photo from 1992 from left Dan Higgins, Sir Patrick Higgins, Bernard Higgins and Michael Higgins A big part of Higgins success from way back has been the ability of its team to work together effectively. Business founder Dan Higgins and his sons Pat, Michael and Bernard have always supported teams to ensure they have the direction, resources and autonomy to make decisions and deliver projects effectively. They also understood the importance of each member contributed their unique set of skills towards the success of the team. The Directors have always been a strong team too. Each had their own skills and talents. Kevin O Sullivan who was a Dan Higgins friend and legal adviser for many, many years said that Dan had the good fortune to have three sons with complementary skills, Pat is a very good strategic corporate thinking man, Michael is a very able corporate administrator, Bernard is an excellent works contractor, working with the men and those three each have their niches, with Pat acting as the guiding coordinator. Pat has been a very wise mediator. LINE MARKING SERVICE - PROFILE Higgins provides line marking services across the country with a specialist fleet of equipment to cover the spectrum of services from roads to carparks, playgrounds to tennis courts. This growing division delivers road marking services with products including long life thermoplastic spray marking; reflective raised pavement markers to audio tactile profiled (ATP) road marking the bumps in the side of the road that make such a noise and vibration when you drive on them. Jon Price manages the specialist Manawatu team and says the team will go anywhere to complete projects. We do a large amount of state highway ATP road marking. We are fortunate to have the latest equipment and vehicles to do our job and we have an established team which can deliver the precision and quality that the customer demands. The team have just received two more line marking trucks to add to their fleet. Congratulations Road audio tactile profiled road marking: delivers a noisy safety warning to motorists who stray onto the edge of a road. Carpark and safety marking: warehouses, schools, business, supermarkets, motels and industrial sites. Congratulations to Niki Marshall who was recognised as the top credit graduate in 2013 at the National Credit and Finance Association Conference. Niki is a Credit Administrator at group office in. Niki received a cash scholarship for this award and at the same conference Niki was presented with her certificate in Level 4 credit management.
