1 Crufts 2015 was an outstanding event with much for all dog people to be proud of. The group winners formed an impressive line-up for Ronnie Irving to judge and the winners of Best in Show and Reserve BIS were very popular choices if applause is anything to go by. Behind the scenes our staff worked hard to make the show a success and our thanks to all of them for doing so. It is often unjust to single any particular group out for special praise, however I will state how much we are fortunate to have Vanessa McAlpine and her very experienced team managing the organisational detail. In addition, this year in particular, we should be impressed by our media team under Caroline Kisko s leadership, especially as they had a number of challenging issues to deal with in the aftermath of the show which required long hours of work that took their contribution well beyond the call of duty. Most people underestimate the amount of work that goes into promoting the registered pedigree dog and Crufts in particular and our media team serve us very well. Channel Four and Sunset and Vine produced TV programming of high quality and audience figures every evening were very good. It is almost inevitable that the national newspapers would focus on a perceived scandal rather than reporting on the winning dogs or aid in the promotion of man s best friend. This month the Chairman praises the teams behind Crufts, from those organising the show to the media team who work tirelessly and passionately in promoting the event and dealing with the adverse publicity after the show. The Chairman also includes an update on the new Kennel Club building and the relaunch of the Kennel Gazette which will hopefully be available for members soon. 2 EVENTS FROM THE CHAIRMAN FROM THE CHAIRMAN but they would no doubt disagree. The manufacturing of news by embellishing a few facts often goes unnoticed in the news frenzy that follows. One example is the pre-crufts nonsense about UK dog exhibitors disliking the international entries but in many ways this was comparatively harmless as it allowed us to make the point that Crufts is an international event and like other typically British events (e.g. Henley and Wimbledon) there remains a strong desire to compete and win at what is perceived as the premier canine event in the world of dogs. Some of the headlines, however, which reported the tragic death of the Irish Setter from Belgium were disgraceful and inconsiderate of the dog and the owners. As I write, the details of this poisoning case are yet to be fully revealed but I doubt the eventual outcome will receive the same degree of media coverage, even if there is some perverse twist that identifies a malicious perpetrator. It is so disappointing that so much good news was totally overwhelmed by speculation and negativity, especially as Crufts itself celebrated so much about dogs and their place in society. Property search One area of work that continued behind the scenes at Crufts was the General Committee s efforts to locate and find suitable land or premises to extend our facilities to support competition and training of dogs in the widest sense and to help develop a growing interest in dog ownership. From the outset, the General Committee has been determined to find facilities suitable for the widest range of activities and is very mindful that whichever sites are considered, the geography will not satisfy everybody. It soon became clear that there was not going to be a large number of suitable possibilities. There is a lot to be done before much more can be said but if progress continues as expected our AGM in May will be the time for some very important news. It is possible to confirm we are making good progress towards securing a freehold property in Aylesbury for our operational functions (including registrations and Petlog) and this project will also be reported at the AGM. Clarges Street Anybody who has visited our London base in the last few weeks will have seen the astonishing progress of the building work surrounding our premises. In the week after Crufts, the top floor was being constructed and Laing O Rourke, who are the builders of the entire project, remain confident they will meet the anticipated date for completion of the new Kennel Club in time for a move into the new premises during September Of course, such an event cannot take place without some celebration and ceremony and members can expect to hear more on this subject quite soon. The Gazette It is fully recognised that some members expected the re-introduction of the Kennel Gazette to be progressed more rapidly than is the case. This has led some people to speculate that the General Committee is less than enthusiastic about the project. However reality is very different. This is a significant project and following the AGM we invited those who spoke openly in support of the re-introduction to help lead the work to deliver a revised format aimed at providing members with a journal that is in line with the members wishes as debated at the AGM and at an affordable cost to the club. Some internal politics and concerns about a conflict of interest, led to some resignations from the editorial group, but now they are behind us, the remaining members are continuing to work towards a re-launch of the Gazette during the spring of The group have defined the content of the first three editions and the General Committee have appointed an editor to our staff to lead the project. At the time of writing, we are in the final stages of identifying a partner to compile and print the magazine. The ambition is to deliver the first monthly edition in May or very soon thereafter. At the very least a detailed update will be available for members at the AGM. Steve Dean
