1 Canyon Creek Canyon Chronicle News for the Residents of Canyon Chronicle July 2008 Volume 2 Issue 7 Pet Corner Submitted by Luis Escobar, Dog Behavioral Therapist & Master Trainer Thunderstorms, Firecrackers, and Other Loud Sounds Does your dog jump at the clap of thunder? Does he bark at the bang of fireworks? Or is he calm with seemingly no reaction to the loud crashes? Dogs have varying reactions to loud noises. Some may tear up the house, others may try to hide or run from the scary sounds, while others seem just fine. If your dog appears fearful of clamoring sounds, check with your vet. Some dog s ears are so sensitive that the noisy clapping of thunder may actually hurt their ears. If a dog is somewhat deaf, these sounds may also cause adverse reactions. Your vet also can help if your pup needs a sedative to calm him during a noisy storm or explosive celebrations of the 4th of July. Also check with your vet about using Bach Rescue Remedy if a sedative is not appropriate. Since you are not always home when storms hit, you will want to set up an area for your dog in which he feels safe. Crate training your dog offers him that safe haven. He should be able to access the designated refuge whenever you are not at home. Some dogs react to an approaching storm long before it even reaches the area. It is as though that the dog is reacting to the sound of thunder from the distanced storm. The dog, however, is actually reacting to the presence of static electricity in the atmosphere (as h a p p e n s with the drop of barometric pressure prior to a storm). These dogs need to the grounded. An anti-static mat can be placed in or under the dog s kennel. The kennel should be situated in a way that the dog thinks it has entered the house. The kennel should be soundproofed with rubber-backed carpet with an extra piece of carpet across the opening to create a flap that closes after the dog enters. If the kennel is a safe place, the dog should be allowed to come and go as it wishes. Some dogs become so fearful that they may hurt themselves if the kennel is closed and they cannot escape. If the kennel is soundproofed, the bang of thunder and fireworks may be diminished and the dog may remain calm. If crating your dog is not a possibility or you do not have a crate, find a place where the sound is less intense. In a thunderstorm, the dog should be in a closed-in area that does not let in the flash of light. The best solution, however, for dogs that are fearful of noises is desensitization. This is the process of helping your dog work through his fear of storms and other loud noises. It can be a slow process, and you must take time every day to work with your dog. Do not console your dog when he is fearful. Instead, distract him with something like play. He will be so busy playing that he may not even hear the thunder. You may also want to use a soundtrack of storm noises, firecrackers, car backfiring or other sharp sounds. Play the tape at a low level and simultaneously distract him by keeping him focused on play, on you or on another activity. Over time, increase the volume of the recording. Repeat this process until your dog has become accustomed to the noises. Case Study: Rex, a Rottweiler, would begin acting anxious when a storm approached. The owner could not settle the dog, and he would hurt himself when the storm arrived. Rex would run through the house or the backyard crashing into things. One time he had escaped trying to run from the storm and was not found until after the weather calmed. The solution of using a crate with antic-static pads helped to calm Rex. The soundproofed crate diminished the sound of the thunder and the carpet prevented the flash of light inside. Rex is now calmer during a storm and much happier. The owner now has a calm dog and no longer needs to search for Rex after a storm. Copyright 2008 Peel, Inc. Canyon Chronicle - July 2008

3 Summer is here and you deserve a place to enjoy it ~ Imagine being able to step out for a romantic evening without leaving your property! Outdoor spaces are becoming the latest greatest retreat to enjoy with family and friends. Decorating outdoor rooms is just as important as the inside rooms. Creating beautiful, useful spaces outdoors is a great way to extend your home s living space. First, it is important to determine the primary function of the space. Identify how you live. Do you spend time at the table or are you more of a lounger? How many people are typically together at one time in the outdoor area? Do you want to hear the peacefulness of nature, or do you want a tv mounted high to create the perfect place to sit back and watch a game? Now it is time to create a seating plan Furnishings Outdoor furniture has changed dramatically. It used to be very plain and functional. Now you can find a wide variety of furniture made of weather resistant materials. An organic look is very popular now. Bamboo, dark metal and wood paired with beautiful woven fibers are great options. Cushions soften your outdoor furniture, making it more inviting and comfortable. Many are fade resistant, stain resistant and waterproof Outdoor Living Trends By Kirsten Hanna Canyon Chronicle perfect for the outdoors. Color Citrus tones, bright yellow, green, orange and aqua are very popular this summer, especially in accent pieces like pillows or cushions. To make your outdoor seem like an extension of your home, I recommend using the same primary color scheme you ve used in the interior, varying the intensity of the colors by using brighter, more dominant shades. Lighting Very important!! Create different levels of lighting with candles, gas lanterns, chandeliers, and table lamps. You can find a variety of designs depending of your style and the ambiance you want to create. Torches and candles will create a warm and inviting casual mood whether they are lining a path or standing sentinel around a patio. Additionally, don t be afraid to pull out your Christmas lights in the middle of the summer! Wrapping that small iridescent string of white bulbs around tree trunks and branches will bring a romantic atmosphere to your backyard or courtyard, even in July. Accessorizing Define your seating area with an outdoor area rug. Because outdoor area rugs come in so many different colors and designs, you can (Continued on Page 4) NOW ENROLLING! New materials and fibers are now being used to create colorful area rugs resistant to fading and mildew. Further, tone down the summer heat of your décor with some neutral outdoor drapes. Use them on terraces, covered patios, verandas or to create poolside cabana spaces with a luxury feel. Draperies can make your outdoor living area cozier and more private. Outdoor fountains also add a majestic soothing element to your patio. Add outdoor wall art, such as colorful metal panels, a sculpture, or an all weather art print. Plants are a must! 5 I have a new neighbor from out of state who recently asked if I could suggest some places around Texas for family vacations. As a 5th Generation Texan, I could easily think of a few suggestions for her. So if you re also new to Texas, or just looking for new places to visit, here are my family s favorite summer destinations in the Lone Star State. 1) Garner State Park Texas has some really great State Parks for camping, as well as many private campgrounds. But one stands out above the rest for being the kind of place where families return generation after generation. Garner State Park is located 90 miles west of San Antonio in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Situated down in a valley, one of Garner s main attractions is the clear, cold waters of the Frio River the same river that was immortalized in George Strait s song All My Ex s Live in Texas. In addition to swimming & tubing in the Frio River, Garner offers hiking trails, miniature golf, and even jukebox dances at an outdoor pavilion. You ll find kids of all ages 2 to 92 dancing under the stars every summer night at Garner State Park. 2) Port Aransas Anyone who s been in Texas long enough Deep in the Heart of Texas: Family Road Trips By Wendi Baird Canyon Chronicle knows that Port Aransas is a favorite destination for both fishermen and beach bums. Another fun activity in Port Aransas is eating! There are an abundance of restaurants offering enough fresh seafood to satisfy any appetite. For rainy days at the beach, Corpus Christi is just a 30-minute drive down the coast. The Texas State Aquarium in Corpus is always popular with the kids. 3) Moody Gardens, Galveston Another popular beach destination in Texas is Galveston, just south of Houston. This is the place to go when you want more than just sun-n-sand. Moody Gardens in Galveston is a Resort Hotel/Theme Park/IMAX/Beach all in one. There is enough to do there to occupy an entire weekend. Next to Moody Gardens is the newest Schlitterbahn, an indoor water park open year round. And when leaving Galveston, be sure to detour through the small town of Kemah. The Kemah Boardwalk and Marina has an old-fashioned feel to it with a giant ferris wheel and carousel, and there are several great restaurants with outdoor seating on the water. The kids love to watch the boats coming and going while waiting for their food. (Continued on Page 7) Packages start as low as $895. 7 Family Road Trips - (Continued from Page 5) 4) San Antonio This is my hometown, and definitely one of our favorite vacation destinations. There is so much to see and do there, you really need to plan on several trips to fully enjoy it all. The Downtown area with the Riverwalk is a great destination for romantic getaways. Then moving away from Downtown toward the outskirts of San Antonio, you have the Theme Parks Sea World and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. And in between are numerous restaurants serving up some of the best Mexican food in Texas. 5) Fredericksburg This quaint little German town in the Texas hill country has become world renowned as a vacation destination. Main Street offers some of the best eating and shopping in the whole state. And be sure to stop by the Admiral Nimitz Museum of the Pacific War. There are also several wineries near town that are well worth a visit to their tasting rooms. If you plan to stay overnight, you can choose from numerous Bed-n-Breakfast Inns, in addition to the national chain hotels. Or if you have a camper, then make reservations at one of the local RV parks. Like the motto says, Texas really is like a whole other country. And there is something to do for everyone. These are just a few of our favorite getaways. If you have one to add to the list, let us know! Peel, Inc.
