2 WELCOME! Thank you for enquiring about ICAT. The following pages contain details of the courses and workshops planned so far. These are being constantly updated with extra courses being run on demand. Group numbers are kept small to ensure individuals receive a high standard of personal tuition. Please visit our website to view the most up to date information! About the Institute The Institute was set up in 2002 and has rapidly established itself as a leading centre for those wishing to learn more about complementary therapies and their benefits in the animal kingdom. ICAT is a registered training provider with UKRLP. ICAT has gained international status with students attending from all over the United Kingdom and even further afield. One keen learner attended from Moscow and is now the first equine massage therapist in Russia! As well as setting up practices in the UK, some of our graduates are based in Canada, Spain, Cyprus, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore! The Principal The principal and chief assessor is Julie Boxall-Tully who has been working with animals for over 30 years. Coming from an equestrian and agricultural background and having a love of dogs and horses, Julie developed a keen eye for conformation and movement. It was this interest in muscles and locomotion that was to develop into a lifelong career with humans and animals! A qualified adult and further education teacher and practitioner of complementary therapies on both humans and animals, Julie was initially trained by the late Pamela Hannay, who was Senior Instructor of the Ohashi Institute in New York. Julie is regarded as one of the most experienced animal massage therapists in the UK having treated a vast variety of animals over the years from dogs, cats and horses, to livestock including pigs, sheep and cattle. As an experienced horsewoman, she has a thorough understanding of the stresses and strains that various activities can place upon the equine athlete. She is very interested in the association of psycho physiologic factors that contribute to muscle tension in animals. The Team We are proud to have a professional team of experts who regularly lecture on the programmes including veterinarians, master saddlers, farriers, equine dentists and qualified ICAT graduates. Working closely with this team, the ICAT courses are regularly updated to ensure that learners are informed about any new and exciting developments in animal therapy, health and safety information or practitioner legislation.

3 Location ICAT equine workshops/courses are held at local BHS recognised stable yards in Devon. Facilities include use of undercover American style barns, indoor and outdoor schools and a comfortable classroom. The canine courses are held in warm comfortable spacious surroundings. Accommodation This is available on site or in nearby B & B s. A list of local accommodation is supplied upon receipt of booking. All horses are provided so there is no need to bring your own. Canine companions are most welcome to stay in the hotel and attend both the theory and practical sessions! Features Julie has frequently appeared on television and radio interviews including BBC Breakfast Time, Spotlight, Newsround, BBC Radio 4 Farming Today, BBC Radio 2 Terry Wogan Show, BBC Radio Devon Justin Leigh Show, as well as being featured in many national magazines. She has written and published several articles on animal massage and has regularly appeared as a guest speaker for major events such as; Paws in the Park, Your Horse Live and the Kennel Club Canine Sports Science Seminars. THE LEGAL ASPECT The treatment of animals in the UK is controlled by the Veterinary Surgeons Act This Act s main aim is to prevent lay persons from practising veterinary surgery which is defined as: a) The diagnosis of diseases in, and injuries to, animals including tests performed on animals for diagnostic purposes; b) The giving of advice based upon such a diagnosis; c) The medical or surgical treatment of animals; d) The performance of surgical operations upon animals. Massage is covered under the *Exemption Order 1962 as a manipulative therapy. We abide by a, b, c, & d and always work with veterinary approval, only address minor ailments or behavioural problems and DO NOT diagnose and treat. The House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology (Complementary and Alternative Medicine November 2000) defined Massage and Aromatherapy as complementary because they do not purport to embrace diagnostic skills. By embarking upon its courses ICAT requires all its students to respect the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 and Exemption Order 1962 by never working upon an animal without gaining prior veterinary approval. INSURANCE The exceptionally high standards of the ICAT Diploma courses have been recognised by a nationwide insurance company who are happy to provide insurance for students/graduates. They offer indemnity insurance of 2.5 million and an individual animal limit of up to 25,000. They can also include business equipment/stock and personal accident cover for additional premiums.

12 TESTIMONIAL ICAT HAS CHANGED MY LIFE I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed and the vast amount of knowledge I obtained whilst studying with ICAT on the Equine Sports Massage course. The Course is taught in an informal, friendly but effective manner, where not only do you learn the theory aspect behind equine anatomy and a horse s natural way of going, but practical handson experience too of how to spot when there is a problem and the horse is suffering from muscular discomfort. I managed to attend the residential courses, complete the case records and course work while working full time and teaching in my spare time it was hard going but so enjoyable, it didn t feel like hard work! The lectures are superb and the guest lectures and seminars equip you with a good basic knowledge of Farriery, Saddle fitting, Equine Dentistry and what a vet looks for when assessing a horse and looking at lameness. As a qualified Equine Sports Massage Therapist I see a number of horses with ill fitting saddles and tack, unbalanced feet and owners who genuinely care for their horse but know no different. ICAT prepares you for all these encounters and enables you to work with horses and ponies with a variety of problems. There is immense satisfaction when you can make a real difference to horses performance and well-being. And you never stop learning! I would recommend ICAT to anyone looking to increase their knowledge of equine anatomy, muscular health and well-being issues, or anyone that is looking to pursue a career in alternative/complementary therapies with horses. You will follow a well-run, friendly but effective, informative teaching syllabus and you too will find that learning is infectious you just won t be able to stop! Charlene Baker Dip ICAT
